Good evening everyone, and welcome back to The Elmbridge Xcel Sports Hub for tonight’s Emirates FA Cup, 1st Qualifying Round Replay. Tonight we extend a warm welcome to all the players, officials and supporters of our visitors Beaconsfield Town FC, and of course to the three match officials. The two clubs play again this evening following the 2-2 draw at Chalfont St. Peter last Saturday. Our opponents play in the Southern League, Premier Division South, the same as our co-tenants Walton Casuals, which is at Step 3. As these notes were written before Monday’s draw for the 2nd Qualifying Round was made, we do not know who the winners of tonight’s match will play next. Should the scores still be level after 90 minutes this evening there will be 30 minutes of extra-time, followed by penalty-kicks, should that be necessary. We are here this evening because a last-minute goal on Saturday at Chalfont St. Peter secured us a draw after two quick goals put us 2-1 down just before the hour. This was after we had taken the lead just before the break. Those two goals by the home side triggered a dominant spell by them, but we came back strong late in the game, and deserved our chance to play again. We had gone into the match missing three key players. Darryl Siaw and Reece Brewster were both serving one-match, competition-specific bans, while Alex Kelly had not recovered from an injury sustained against Cobham in mid-week, but those coming in did not let the side down. We almost fell behind straight from the kick-off when The Rams struck a post, but we recovered well, and a pretty even first-half was three minutes from coming to an end when Zach Dainkeh and Jordan Henry combined to set up Harry Mills to score from the right of the box. The home side equalised after 49 minutes following a mix-up in our defence, and 8 minutes later they took the

lead with a break away from the centre-circle. We had to battle to keep the score at 2-1 for a while, but we came back well, and credit goes to the side for a battling display that culminated in the last-ditch equaliser. A special mention must go to Jacob Munting and Zach, who were excellent in midfield, both having arguably their best games for the club, and young Louis Collins at left-back, but everyone played their part. The equaliser came when Harry sent in a terrific cross from the left for substitute Onur Bakici to glance in a close-range header. A week ago we picked up another three league points by defeating Cobham here by the only goal of the game. For all our fine attacking play, it took a scrambled goal after 78 minutes for us to begin to see off the challenge posed by determined, no-holds barred opponents and officiating that could charitably be described as lenient. Having gone behind Cobham came out of their defensive shell and began to threaten our goal, but we held firm to come away with a deserved win. Harry Mills looked to have been identified as our main threat, and was subjected to some stiff tackles straight from the kick-off. We dominated the play in the first-half, but could not capitalise on the chances we did create against an uncompromising defence. Palace Francis looked to have won a penalty when some excellent play took him into the box, where he was clearly brought down, but the referee, not for the first-time in the match, took a different view. We continued to dominate and create chances in the second-half, but it began to look like we would come away without the win, until that changed after 78 minutes when we were awarded a free-kick out on the left touchline. Reece Brewster’s excellent delivery into the box led to rare hesitation in the visitors’ defence, and the ball finally went inside the left-post, with substitute Onur Bakici, who had only been on five minutes, credited with getting the final touch. Having finally conceded, Cobham began to push forward more, and had three dead-ball opportunities in the dying minutes, but they came to nothing. Next Saturday we return to the business of the Combined Counties League, Premier Division South, playing AFC Croydon Athletic here, with a 3.00 pm kick-off. In the meantime we hope everyone enjoys this evening’s match and has a safe journey home afterwards.

A History of Beaconsfield Town FC

Though formed as recently as the summer of 2017 the roots of Beaconsfield Town FC stem from Beaconsfield SYCOB which was founded in 1994 following a merger between Beaconsfield United and Slough Youth Centre Old Boys (hence the “SYCOB” in the Clubs name).

United dated back to 1921 and were themselves a coming together of two local teams whilst Slough Youth Centre formed their first football team in 1938. With Slough Youth Centre Old Boys unable to progress due to a lack of ground provisions and United themselves struggling on and off the field at the time the decision was taken to amalgamate the two clubs and so Beaconsfield SYCOB was born.

Initially playing in the London Spartan Premier Division, and with Fred Deanus as Chairman, Beaconsfield SYCOB chalked up a series of Top Five finishes before finally winning the league in 2000 / 01 under the guidance of Simon Delahunty. However they were refused promotion to the Isthmian League due to some harsh technicalities over the terms of their lease. A further three seasons were spent in the Spartan South Midlands Premier Division before Beaconsfield SYCOB again won the league in 2003 / 04 and this time gained promotion to the Southern Football League (Division One East).

The Rams made solid progress in their early years at Step 4 and over three seasons played in three different leagues – Division 1 East, Division 1 West and finally Division 1 South & West from where they were relegated in 2006 / 07. However the appointment of ex-player Jamie Jarvis, ably assisted by Peter Scott, saw The Rams not only win the Spartan South Midlands Premier Division at the first attempt but also win the Berks & Bucks FA Senior Trophy and the Premier Division League Cup, a fantastic treble of silverware.

Promoted to Division 1 South & West, the club finished a highly creditable fourth place and made the Play Offs before losing out to AFC Totton. Moving to the Southern League Midland Division for 2009 / 10, Beaconsfield SYCOB then went through a succession of managers, players, highs and lows until finishing in bottom place in 2010 / 11. Only a reprieve and a league restructure saved The Rams from the drop but since then they have gone on to over achieve for a club of its size. Under the guidance of Byron Walton they finished fifth in the 2011-12 season and lost out in the Play-Off Final to Bedworth United. The following season and with James Pritchard at the helm they again finished fifth but lost out to Rugby Town in a Play Off Semi-Final though the season did end with some silverware following a fine win over Chesham United in the Berks & Bucks FA Senior Cup.

2013-14 saw Gary Meakin take over as manager just five days before the start of the season and with only five players on the clubs books – to finish 8th and reach the Quarter Finals of the League Cup was a fine achievement as was a runner up spot in the Berks & Bucks FA Senior Cup, Chesham United gaining revenge for defeat twelve months earlier. The 2014-15 season saw a partnership with the FAB Academy who provided the

bulk of the teams’ players under the stewardship of Andy Hurley and Nas Bashir. That partnership continued into 2015-16 season with Geoff Warner as manager as The Rams finished in a respectable ninth place whilst the 2016-17 season saw them under joint managers Andy Hurley and Leigh Wooldridge and ended with a 16th place league finish though a run to the Fourth Qualifying Round of the F.A. Cup was a “Best Ever” for SYCOB.

The 2017-18 season saw the return of Gary Meakin as the first manager of the newly named Beaconsfield Town, with Chris Coyle as Chairman. The Rams had virtually a whole new team and, helped by an amazing away record, they kept in touch with the League pacesetters to finally gain top spot on the last day of the season and claim the Evo-Stik League South, East title. Competing at Level 3 for the first time in their history in the newly formed Evo-Stik League South Premier South division, The Rams achieved a highly credible 12th place finish as well as reaching the First Round of the F.A. Trophy for the first time in their history, losing out to eventual finalists Leyton Orient.

The truncated 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons saw plenty going on off the field as the club expanded with the establishing of an Academy as well as Under 23 / 18 / 17 and 16 teams and plans in place to add further age group sides as well as a Ladies team. A brand new 3G playing surface was commissioned over the summer of 2021 as The Rams look to build for the future both on and off the pitch.

Interview – Joe Hicks

We caught up with the skipper ahead of today’s FA Cup

replay to get his thoughts on his time at Walton & Hersham

so far, as well as his feelings on the Swans chances this

season.

It’s been 12 months since your comeback from a lengthy

injury, how has your first year in a Swans shirt been?

It’s been a good year overall, perhaps the only

disappointing things being knocked out of the FA Vase in

April and not being able to finish the league campaign

last season. But with that said, we did get promoted

earlier in the summer, so I can only say that overall it’s

been very positive so far in what has been quite a

strange 12 months.

What’s been your best moment in a Swans shirt so far?

I’m not sure anything has really stood out to me as a single best moment yet to be honest,

although the Guildford FA Cup tie a few weeks back is certainly up there. Hopefully at the

end of this season I’ll have one…

What is your relationship with Scott like and how demanding is he of the team as a whole?

Truthfully, I couldn’t have a better relationship with Scott. He’s managed me so well with

coming back from the injury I had as well as a load of other situations. When it comes to

the team, he’s demanding in the right areas and always at the right times – no doubt his

demanding nature is one of the reasons for how we perform on the pitch.

2-1 down on Saturday in the 90th minute but we fought back to claim a draw, what does

that say about the fight in the team?

Well we’ve definitely got a lot more ‘fight’ in us this year and I think that was shown in

abundance in this game, particularly playing against a team who are two leagues above us

where we held ourselves really well. It was great to see the boys stick together until the

very end and that kind of performance bodes so well for the rest of the season.

How far do you think we can go this season?

I’m really positive for this season, a lot more so than last season - we’ve got our targets but

I don’t really like to talk about that stuff too much so hopefully we can have a good

interview at the end of the season…

A final word…

Where we are now in comparison with the start of the last season is amazing and I’m

confident it can only get better. The fans that are increasingly coming in week after week in

their droves has been brilliant and I can only thank them for their support and hope that it

continues, it really does make a huge difference to us. Up the Swans!

Walton & Hersham F.C. – “The Swans”

Walton-on-Thames F.C. was formed in 1895, and in 1945, following World War II, amalgamated with Hersham F.C. to form Walton & Hersham F.C., the present club. The united club immediately joined the newly formed Corinthian League and followed a poor first season with a hat-trick of Championships and a runners-up position. They also won the Surrey Senior Cup for the first time in 1947-48, beating Isthmian League neighbours Kingstonian 2-1 at Crystal Palace. Election to the Athenian League soon followed and in their first season, 1950-51, Swans finished runners-up and again won the Surrey Senior Cup at Palace, defeating the much vaunted Dulwich Hamlet 2-1. Great days, big crowds These were golden days for the Stompond Lane side and the FA Amateur Cup Semi-Final was reached in successive seasons, 1951-52 and 1952-53, only for Swans to go out to Walthamstow Avenue and Harwich & Parkeston respectively. During this period the club enjoyed a tremendous following, and a record crowd of 10,000 were at the Lane in 1952 when the famous Crook Town were the visitors for an Amateur Cup tie. Stars of this era included Swans’ most famous player, England and Great Britain Olympic defender C.R. ‘Jack’ Neale, and the prolific Reg Sentance, still the club’s all-time top scorer. Some lean years followed, although the FA Cup First Round was reached for the first time in 1957-58, Southampton winning 6-1 before 6,000 people at Stompond Lane. Don Stoker’s popular sides of the early 1960’s brought cup fever back to the Lane and there were fine runs again in the FA Amateur Cup. Two late goals by the prolific and popular Brian Jenkins beat the star-studded Wimbledon side in the Surrey Senior Cup Final of 1960-61, and the trophy was retained against Sutton United the following season. After several years of mid-table respectability, Allen Batsford’s appointment as manager in 1967 heralded the start of the most successful period in the club’s history. At the end of his first season, a superb victory over a powerful Wimbledon side in the two legged Final secured the Premier Midweek Floodlit League title, the first of three, followed a year later by the winning of the Athenian League championship for the first time. The FA Cup First Round Proper was again reached in the following two seasons, only for Swans to lose to Barnet 1-0 in 1969-70 and Telford United 5-2 in 1970-71, both games being played at the Lane. The runners-up spot in the League was achieved in both those campaigns and the Surrey Senior Cup came back to Stompond Lane in 1970-71, Woking being defeated 3-0 in the Final. Election to the Isthmian ranks followed, with third place attained in the first season, 1971-72. Wembley at last Then followed the most memorable season in the club’s history, 1972-73. The FA Cup First Round barrier was overcome for the first time with Exeter City being defeated 2-1 amid tremendous excitement at the Lane, only for visitors Margate to win by the only goal in the Second Round. Kingstonian were beaten 2-0 in the Surrey Senior Cup Final and the runners-up spot achieved in the League.

Then on the 14th of April 1973 the ultimate prize was gained at Wembley when 41,000 people saw a last-minute Roger Connell goal against Slough Town bring the FA Amateur Cup to Stompond Lane, the trophy being won without a goal being conceded, a record never to be equaled. Dave Bassett, Willie Smith and Connell also had the honour of playing for the England Amateur side. The following season Brian Clough’s Brighton & Hove Albion side were held 0-0 at The Lane in the FA Cup First Round, Swans pulling off a sensational result in the replay at The Goldstone Ground, a Clive Foskett hat-trick included in a 4-0 win. Sadly, when Batsford left for Wimbledon the following season the fine team broke up, the crowds drifted away, and relegation soon followed in 1975. The FA Cup First Round was surprisingly reached in 1975-76, and a young side put on a battling performance at Selhurst Park against Malcolm Allison’s Crystal Palace, only going down 1-0 to a late goal. Barren years followed, with the club several times being close to extinction. In the mid 1980’s the club was proud to have Sir Stanley Matthews as President, but sides flattered to deceive and only a draw in the final game of the 1986-87 season prevented relegation to Division Two. Promotion After 20 years out of the top-flight, a young side under Neil Price at last gained promotion in 1993-94, and the following season the First Round Proper of the FA Cup was again reached, Swansea City winning 2-0 at the Lane. However Swans’ Centenary celebrations were spoilt by relegation after only two seasons back in the Premier, but under the management of Laurie Craker the team ensured the stay in Division One was as brief as possible, promotion being gained on the last day of the campaign. After a creditable first season back in the Premier Division it again proved to be a struggle to remain there, and at the end of the 1999-2000 season Swans finished in bottom spot and relegation again became a reality. Swans had to wait until the 2004-05 season before more success came to Stompond Lane after long-serving player Alan Dowson took over as manager in October. After defeat in his first match in charge, Dowson led the team to a record breaking 13 match winning sequence, fine runs in the FA Trophy and League Cup, and promotion as runners-up in the Ryman League Division One. The Surrey Senior Cup Final was reached for the first time in 31 years, the Swans only losing a thrilling game against AFC Wimbledon 2-1 after extra-time before close to 4,000 people at Woking. After a creditable first season back in the Premier Division a poor start to 2006-07 led to Dowson’s early resignation and eventual relegation yet again. Since then Swans remained in Division One, facing relegation fights on several occasions, until 2015-16, when a third from bottom finish finally saw them go down ending a 45 year unbroken stay in the Isthmian League. At the end of September 2017 Swans were forced to leave their home of 8 decades, Stompond Lane, when it was sold for development, the club moving to a new home at a purpouse-built Sports Hub in Waterside Drive. After two good seasons in the Combined Counties League Premier Division, a poor 2018-19 led to a bottom place finish and relegation to Division One. In June 2019, the Club was taken over by a consortium of university students, who claim to be the ‘Youngest Football Club Owners in the World’. The Swans then in April of 2021 gained promotion on a PPG (points per game) system, and will now play this season in the new and restructured Combined Counties League Premier Div. South.
