EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The School of Nuclear and Allied Sciences 2014 Annual Report provides an overview of the activities performed within the year. It also acknowledges the contributions provided by the various Departments namely, Department of Medical Physics, Department of Nuclear Agriculture and Radiation Processing, Department of Nuclear Engineering, Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications, Department of Nuclear Safety and Security, and the Office of International Programmes.

The School exists for preservation, maintenance and enhancement of nuclear knowledge in Ghana and Africa through the provision of high quality teaching, research, entrepreneurship training, service and development of postgraduate programmes in the nuclear sciences and technology.

The programmes are harmoninized to meet international standards by International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to provide the essential academic components of the professional

training to ensure the contribution of nuclear and radiation science and technology to human welfare and socio economic development and their impact on human health, industry, agriculture and environment.

Ghana indicated its intention to establish a Graduate School of Nuclear and Allied Sciences in a statement presented at 117th IAEA Board of Governors meeting in 2005.

Hence the establishment of the School of Nuclear and Allied Sciences (SNAS) was jointly done by the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC) and the University of Ghana (UG) in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in 2006 to train high caliber human resource in the field of nuclear science and technology. The School was established in response to the increasing threat of nuclear knowledge loss in Ghana and Africa. Considering the importance of well-trained personnel with the relevant skills for successful implementation of the Ghana's Nuclear Power Programme (NPP), the establishment of the SNAS was timely.

Within this limited time of the SNAS existence, it has been certified by IAEA as an African Regional Designated Centre (RDC) for Professional and Higher Education in Nuclear Science and Technology in September 2009 and Radiation Protection in October 2011. The

SNAS was also approved by IAEA as a Medical Physics Training Centre in the sub region. The School is also an IAEA regional hub for the Africa regions for AFRA Network for Education in Nuclear Science and Technology (AFRA-NEST). This initiative is being implemented through the installation and operation of an e-learning platform (Cyber Platfrom) for the purpose of enhancing Human Resource Development (HRD) and Nuclear Knowledge Management (NKM) to meet the needs of African Countries in the area of nuclear Science and Technology.

The School is environmentally friendly and very serene, located within the premises of GAEC, Atomic Kwabenya. It has a well laid out landscaped manicured green lawns which promotes a good atmosphere for teaching and learning.

oOut of commitment to the core values of the School, it has developed and mounted 1 nuclear-oriented and related academic programmes which are organised under 5 departments, leading to the award of Master of Philosophy (M.PhiH and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees of the University of Ghana. The School also runs the IAEA Post-graduate Educational Course (PGEC) on Radiation and the Safety of Radiation Sources. Since its inception, over 317 M.Phil students (including 11 international students) and 11 Ph.D. students have graduated from the various programmes of the School. Two batches of a total of 59 students, of which 53 are international students, have also successfully completed the PGEC programme. Presently, there arc 274 M.Phil and 45 Ph.D. national and international students, including 21 IAEA- sponsored, international students are at various levels of their study. Also, there are 41 PGEC students (including 35 international students) are currently enrolled in PGEC programme.

To ensure a high calibre of quality of the human resource produced, the School, uses highly trained faculty from GAEC and UG. and other universities, scientific and research institutions in Ghana, including Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), University of Cape Coast (UCC). University of Development Studies (UDS), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Geological Survey Department (GSD) and Cocoa Research Institute of Ghana (CRIG). Adjunct professors (local and foreign), lecturers and scholars arc recruited from partnership institutions (both teaching and research) and the IAEA Member States to lecture and co-supervise Ph.D. Sandwich programmes of the School.

The SNAS utilizes the state of the art facilities of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission as well as the technical support through the IAEA Technical Cooperation programme to provide high quality training through research. Faculty members are also given ultra modern training and exposure in their field of pursuit to augment teaching learning. This has resulted in numerous publications in International peer reviewed journals as well as technical documents.

Enrolment in the School cuts across Ghana and the sub-region namely, Ghana. Angola. Benin. Botswana, Burkina Faso, Cameroon. Chad, DR Congo, Egypt, Eretria, Ivory Coast, Jamaica, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Tanzania, South Africa, Uganda and Zambia with many more applying to be admitted from other African countries.

A total of 49 M.Phil students, including 8 females graduated from the School. A total number of 56 students were enrolled at SNAS for the 2014/2015 academic year to pursue Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees. Out of these, 5 were international students and 4 students were admitted to the Doctor of Philosophy programmes

The School of Nuclear and Allied Sciences (SNAS) is currently under the College of Basic and Applied Sciences, University of Ghana which took effect from the 2014/2015 Academic year

6.0 APPOINTMENTS AND TRANSFER

6.1 APPOINTMENTS

6.1.1 On 1st December 2014, Dr. Dennis Adotey was appointed as Head for*

International Programmes to replace Rev. (Dr.) Samuel Akoto Bamford whose tenure of office expired.

6.1.2 Dr. Emmanuel Ampomah-Amoako was made the Head for the Nuclear_ ^

Engineering Department with effect from ls‘ December 2014, to replace Dr. K.A. Danso whose tenure of office expired.

6.1.3 On 11th August 2014, Mr. Samuel Yaw Ganyaglo was appointed as theCoordinator for Nuclear Earth Science programme at SNAS to replace Prof. Shiloh Osae who was made Director of National Nuclear Research Institute.

6.1.4 On 11th August 2014, Dr. Joseph B. Tandoh took over fromProf. I.J.K Aboh as Programme Coordinator for the Nuclear Earth Science programme who was appointed as Deputy Director of Ghana Atomic Energy Commission.

6.2 TRANSFER

Mr. Anthony Gyan Osae, a Senior Administrative Assistant was transferred from the Nuclear Sciences and Applications Department to Nuclear Agriculture and Radiation Processing Department on 16th September 2014.

Ms. Gifty Douglas a Senior Clerk at Nuclear Agriculture and Radiation Processing Department of SNAS was granted a three - year study leave to pursue a programme in Administration at Wisconsin International University College (WIUC)

9.0 TRAINING PROGRAMMES, WORKSHOPS, SEMINAR AND VISITSo

SNAS as a Regional Designated Centre held various training programmes, workshops, and seminars and also hosted dignitaries in the year under review which are as follows:

9.1 ACTIVITIES BY SNAS

9.1.1 Working visit by Parliamentary Select Committee on Environment,Science, Technology and Innovation (MEST1) to the Commission and the SNAS on 20th February, 2014.

9.1.2 Visit of Dr. Margaret Mashinkila an IAEA Programme ManagementOfficer for Ghana visited the school to interact with the IAEA Sponsored Students on 13th September, 2014.

9.1.3 The Provost of the College of Basic and Applied Sciences, Universityof Ghana in the person of Prof. E. O. Owusu paid a working visit to the SNAS on 13n November, 2014.

9.1.4 The Students Representative Council of SNAS organized a seminartitled “Nuclear Energy Mix: A Solution to the Energy Crisis”? on 18th November, 2014.

9.1.5 International Atomic Energy Agency Regional Post-GraduateEducation_Course (PGEC) on Radiation Protection and Safety of Radiation Sources, Accra-Ghana started on 6th October, 2014 and willend on 27th February, 2015

9.2 ACTIVITIES BY OTHER INSTITUTES/SOCIETIES HOSTED AT SNAS

The following activities were hosted by other Institutes or Societies at the School:

9.2.1 Ghana Institute of Physics (GIP) held a National Conference on Inspiring the Teaching and Learning of Physics for National Development from 26th to 28th November, 2014.

9.2.2 The Radiological and Medical Science Research Institute (RAMSRI) organized a Meeting on Ethical Review Committee of the Radiological and Medical Sciences Research Institute from 14th to 18th January 2014.

9.2.3 Ghana Space Science and Technology Institute (GSSTI) hosted a group of people from MENASAT Company, U.K. on a three day training programme to discuss the Status of Satellite Data Usage and Establishment of Satellite Data Centre in Ghana on 17th December. 2014.

9.2.4 An Ebola Workshop was organized by Ghana Atomic Energy Commission Clinic in collaboration with the Ghana Health Service on 18th December, 2014

9.2.5 Ghana Society for Medical Physics (GSMP) celebrated the International Day of Medical Physics on the theme “Looking into the body- Advancement in imaging through Medical Physics” on 7lh November 2014.

10.0 SPECIAL EVENTS

10.1 Outreach Programme

The School as part of its programme to reach out to the public and to increase Student enrolment embarked on an outreached programme to the University of Cape Coast on 13th November 2014.

10.2 Best Workers Award

Three workers received awards for their hard work in the year under review. Thev are:

11.0 ADMISSION

Forty nine (49) students admitted in the 2013/2014 Academic year have passed theirMaster of Philosophy (M.Phil.) I examinations and have began their research projects.

A total number of fifty six (56) students were enrolled at SNAS for the 2014/15 Academic year to pursue Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) degrees. The total number of Ph.D students were four (4) and five (5) were foreign students.

12.0 GRADUATION

Forty seven (47) M.Phil. Students who have satisfied all requirements by the University of Ghana graduated in the year 2014. Out of this number thirty nine (39) were males and eight (8) were females.

13.0 STAFF STRENGTH

The total staff of SNAS was Forty five (45). Three (3) National Service Personnel were received from the Commission. The details are attached to this report.

14.0 CONCLUSION

The year 2014 was generally a peaceful year.

1. OVERVIEW

This report comprise of activities undertaken in the Medical Physics Department for the year 2014 (Second Semester, 2013/2014 Academic Year - First Semester, 2014/2015 Academic Year). The Department had 11 teaching staff and 4 administrative staff. The teaching staff lectured in their respective courses, while some doubled as project supervisors for final year students. Some of the teaching staff also provided medical physics support to the two centres for Radiotherapy and Nuclear Medicine in Korle Bu and Komfo Anokye hospitals, Number of students who registered for the 2014/2015 academic year is twelve (12) first year students and eleven (11) second year students respectively. Mr Jesse Klubi did not register for the second year. Mr Elio Mallema an IAEA fellow from Mozambique withdrew from the program for poor performance in the first year examinations.

The departm ent is on course in consolidating the training o f medical physicists in Ghana and A frica. The departm ent has received endorsem ent from IAEA and has becom e a regional training ground in medical physics.

The D epartm ent o f N uclear A griculture and Radiation Processing is one o f the Departm ents o f the School o f nuclear and A llied Sciences (SNAS). established by the G hana Atomic Energy C om m ission and the U niversity o f G hana (UG) in collaboration w ith the International A tom ic Energy A gency (IAEA) in Austria, V ienna.

8 CONSTRAINTS

Once again, the Department encountered some constraints in procuring field and laboratory supplies for student projects. The most common was lack of water.

9 CONCLUSION

Despite the constraints, both students and supervisors worked extra hard to ensure that five (5) out of seven (7) students (i. e. 71.43%) who enrolled in the Department in August 2012 successfully completed their programmes by July 2014. This is a downgrade upon the 100% achieved in 2013. Efforts shall be made to improve upon this achievement.

DEPARTMENT OF NUCLEAR ENGINEERING

1. OVERVIEWThe Nuclear Engineering Department runs three M.Phil programmes in Nuclear Engineering. Computational Nuclear Sciences and Engineering and Nuclear Technology Applications in Petroleum and Mining Industries, and one PhD programme in Nuclear Engineering at the School o f Nuclear and Allied Sciences.As at the end of 31st December, 2014 the total number of staff including Part Time Lecturers and students at the Department were eighteen (18) and thirty-four respectively.The main research areas are in the various aspects o f nuclear engineering, neutron and reactor physics, nuclear materials, non-destructive evaluation, computational fluid dynamics, radiotracer applications in industry and radiation damage.Seven (7) publications were made in various journals.The main future aspirations of the Department are to intensify research, improve on computational capacity o f the Department's computer laboratories, provide Departmental Library to augment that already in use and carry out effective teaching.

DEPARTMENT OF NUCLEAR SCIENCES AND APPLICATIONS

1.0 OVERVIEW

The Department o f Nuclear Science and Applications (NSAP), School o f Nuclear and Allied Sciences (SNAS), University of Ghana offers postgraduate studies in four specialized programmes (Applied Nuclear Physics (ANPH), Nuclear and Environmental Protection (ENVP), Nuclear and Radiochemistry (NURC) and Nuclear Earth Science (NUES), leading to the award of M.Phil and Ph.D degrees of the University of Ghana. This document reports on the scientific research and other activities conducted from January to December 2014 in the department. Specific activities undertaken during the year under review have been described under various sub - headings.

During the year under review, the department continued to pursue its core functions o f teaching and research in order to play a key role in nurturing human capital in the field o f nuclear science and technology for the socio-economic development of Ghana. Our students and lecturers continued to utilize the laboratory facilities at the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC) and other research institutions throughout the country for teaching and research. Teaching and supervision of students’ projects were successfully carried out in the department.

Five PhD candidates successfully completed their program and three out o f the number graduated while the other two candidates successfully defended their thesis. Fifteen M.Phil candidates successfully completed their program.

DEPARTMENT OF NUCLEAR SAFETY AND SECURITY

The Department o f Nuclear Safety and Security is one o f the Departments o f the School of Nuclear and Allied Science (SNAS) established by the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission in collaboration with the University o f Ghana. The Department offers MPhil and PhD Degree programmes in Radiation Protection and also an IAEA sponsored Postgraduate Diploma inRadiation Protection and Safety o f Radiation Sources.

Postgraduate Diploma in Radiation Protection and Safety o f Radiation Sources (PGEC)

The fourth edition of the PGEC started on the 6th October, 2014 and will end on the 27th February 2015. A total o f 18 fellows is participating in the course comprising 2 local fellows (Ghanaians) and 16 international fellows. There were 7 female and 11 males in all. The details are shown in Table 2.

OFFICE OF INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMMES

OVERVIEW

The Office o f International Programmes of the School o f Nuclear and Allied Sciences (SNAS) coordinates the activities o f the IAEA sponsored, international programme, Nuclear Science and Technology Programme (NSTP). The programme, which was started in March 2010, is run under the Department of Medical Physics.

It is recommended that the list o f external examiners that will be available for assessment of theses o f students in the Nuclear Science and Technology Programme for all the options be expanded.

ADMINISTRATION

The programme is coordinated by Rev. Dr. S.A.Bamford but runs under the Department of Medical Physics. The administrative and clerical duties are performed by Mr. Samuel Swanzy Blay.

ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES

Nuclear Science and Technology Programme has the following options:

1. Radiation Protection

2. Nuclear Techniques

3. Nuclear Engineering

ADMISSIONS

In 2012/2013 academic year, there was no admission for the NST Programme due to delays in the selection of candidates for the programme.

4th BATCH 2013/2014 ACADEMIC YEAR

Five (5) students comprising 4 males and 1 female have been admitted and this number represents the current enrolment o f NSTP Students at SNAS. They came from the following African countries: Ethiopia, Burkina Faso. Kenya, Uganda, Zambia, and Malawi.

The students went through various departmental seminars with respect to their programme options.

EDUCATIONAL EVENT

First Semester Examinations was started on 11th December 2014 and ended on 22nd December 2014. All the students went through the exams successfully without any malpractices.

GRADUATION

All the first and second batches of students have graduated. The third batch Students are currently working on their thesis.
