Inspired by the VISION concept tyreintroduced in 2017, an airless, connected, rechargeable and entirelysustainable solution, the Michelin Groupis committed to making its tyres 100%sustainable by 2050.Today, nearly 30%* of the components

used in the manufacture of tyresproduced by the Michelin Group arealready made from natural, recycled orotherwise sustainable raw materials.A Michelin tyre is a high-tech product

comprising more than 200 ingredients. The main one is natural rubber, but themany ingredients also include syntheticrubber, metal, fibres and components thatstrengthen a tyre’s structure, like carbonblack, silica and plasticizers (resins, etc.).Incorporated in perfect proportions, thesematerials interact to deliver an optimalbalance of performance, driveability andsafety, while steadily reducing the tyre’senvironmental impact.* In 2020, 28% of the materials used in

manufacturing Michelin Group tyres weresustainable. An objective being met with powerfulR&D capabilities…. Michelin’s maturity in materials

technology stems from the strength of itsR&D capabilities, which are supportedby 6,000 people working in sevenresearch and development centresaround the world and mastering350 areas of expertise. Thecommitment of theseengineers, researchers, chemists and developershas led to the filing of10,000 patents coveringtyre design andmanufacturing. Theywork hard every day tofind the recipes that willimprove tyre safety, durability, ride and otherperformance features, while helping to makethem 100% sustainableby 2050.….and bold partnershipswith innovative companiesMichelin is also aware that

the speed and nature ofinnovation requires new forms ofcooperation, which is why it hasforged partnerships with innovative start-ups whose advances offer unlimitedprospects. The developed technologies

go well beyond the world of tyres andcould be used in other industries, enabling them to benefit as well fromrecovered raw materials that are infinitelyreusable. These technologies will alsomake it possible to recycle polystyreneand recover carbon black or pyrolysis oilfrom used tyres.Axens and IFP Energies Nouvelles,

the two companies that are spearheadingthe BioButterfly project, have beenworking with Michelin since 2019 onproducing bio-sourced butadiene** toreplace petroleum-based butadiene.Using the biomass from wood, rice husks, leaves, corn stalks and other plant waste,4.2 million tonnes of wood chips could beincorporated into Michelin tyres everyyear.Signed in November 2020, the

partnership between Michelin andCanada-based Pyrowave can producerecycled styrene from plastics found inpackaging, like yogurt pots and foodtrays, or in insulating panels. Styrene isan important monomer used tomanufacture not only polystyrene but also

synthetic rubber for tyres and a widevariety of consumer goods. Eventually, tens of thousands of tonnes ofpolystyrene waste could be recycled backinto its original products as well as intoMichelin tyres every year. The revolutionary process developed

by French start-up Carbios, which will bebased on a Michelin site from Autumn2021, uses enzymes to deconstructPET*** plastic waste into its original puremonomers, which can be infinitelyrecovered and reused to make new PETplastics. One of these recovered plasticsjust happens to be the polyester yarnused in tyre manufacturing. Some fourbillion plastic bottles could potentially berecycled into Michelin tyres every year.Lastly, Michelin announced in

February 2021 that it will launch theconstruction of its first tyre recycling plantin the world with Enviro. This Swedishcompany has developed a patentedtechnology to recover carbon black, pyrolysis oil, steel, gas and other new,high-quality reusable materials from end-of-life tyres. It will enable everything inthese tyres to be recovered and reused inseveral types of rubber-based productionprocesses.

Michelin also supports the circulareconomy, as attested by itsparticipation in the EuropeanBlackCycle consortium. Thisproject, which is coordinatedby the Group and financedby the European Union, brings together 13 public-and private-sectorpartners to designprocesses to producenew tyres from end-of-life tyres.

**Butadiene is a one ofthe components in thesynthetic rubber usedto make tyres.*** Polyethyleneterephthalate (PET) is aplastic that is currently oil

based, with its twomonomers, ethylene glycoland terephthalic acid, beingderived from petroleum. It is

used to make one of the mainpolyester fibres used in tyre

reinforcements.

Michelin Tyres will be 100% Sustainable By 2050

This increase reflects that of theraw materials used by this sector.

The Retreading Systems divisionof Marangoni will upwardly adjust thesales price for rubber materials usedto retread tyres in all countries of theeuropean area. The magnitude of theincrease will be at a level of 0.2 €/kg.

This increase reflects that of theraw materials used by this sector, whose rapid evolution is caused bythe increasing demand at a globallevel as well as a reduction inavailable quantities.

The price increase of rawmaterials has already forced variousmanufacturers of new tyres and/ormaterials for retreading to declareprice increases or programme themfor the coming weeks. Marangonibelieves that these increases will nothave a negative effect on thecompetitiveness of the retreadingindustry. Actually, the retreaded tyre, since it uses less raw materialscompared to the new product, willbenefit from this trend.

For the first time, Pirelli now equips, asstandard, a tyre with sensors that can

talk to a car. This world premiere when itcomes to original equipment is thanks toPirelli’s Cyber Tyre system, made up of asensor in each tyre that gathers vital datafor safe driving, linked to softwareintegrated into the car’s onboard computer. The car in question is the McLaren Artura, complete with sensor-equipped tyres: ahybrid supercar packed with technology foran even safer and more involved drivingexperience. Cyber Tyre technology offers aplethora of information to the car anddriver: the tyre’s ‘passport’ – the type oftyre, whether it’s a winter or summerversion, prescribed pressure, load indexand speed rating also as current runninginformation, temperature and pressure.Pirelli’s Cyber Tyre

This information – including temperatureand pressure, constantly monitored andtransmitted in real time – is vital when itcomes to safety. The information is alsodelivered, with greater precision comparedto traditional sensors on the valve, as thePirelli transmitting sensors are in directcontact with the actual tyres rather than thewheel rims. The data supplied from thesensors is processed by software createdby Pirelli that is integrated into the car’selectronics. Some information can be seenon the dashboard and the central display;other information is used by the car’selectronics to calibrate the driver alertsystems based on the exact characteristics

of the tyres and their status.Safety First On The Road

A car equipped withPirelli’s Cyber Tyre systemcan alert a driver that theyneed to check tyre pressuresin order to continue drivingsafely. Alternatively, when it’stime to change the type oftyres – which often carry adifferent speed rating fromsummer to winter – the caralerts the driver when themaximum speed for that tyrehas been reached. Thespecific functionality of Cyber tyres ischosen and defined by the manufacturersadopting them for each model.A Virtual Race Engineer On Board

In the case of the McLaren, some ofthese functions have been specificallyselected for use on a race track. Forexample, Pirelli Cyber Tyre allows thedriver to adapt tyre pressures to obtainbetter performance on track based on theirindividual driving style. As a result, thealerts that each driver receives are alteredtoo. Drivers can also be notified aboutwhen the tyres have reached optimaltemperature, allowing them to access thecorrect window to extract the maximumpossible performance out of the car-tyrepackage. Drivers can additionally be toldwhen to cool their tyres again. Just as ifthere were a proper race engineer in thepassenger seat.

Tailor-Made Tyres With SensorsPirelli’s engineers have developed

bespoke P Zero tyres for the McLarenArtura in 235/35Z R19 size at the front and295/35 R20 size at the back together withMcLaren’s own engineers. The tyres havean asymmetric tread pattern, which givesexcellent braking performance toguarantee control of the car under allconditions, particularly when it’s wet. PZero Corsa tyres, developed specificallyfor use on the track as well as the road, are also available, featuring a compoundderived from Pirelli’s motorsportexperience. Michelin is launching construction onits first tyre recycling plant in

collaboration with Enviro, a Swedishcompany that has developed a patentedtechnology to recover carbon black, oil, steel and gas from end-of-life tyres. Based in Chile’s Antofagasta region,

the plant will be able to recycle 30,000tons of earthmover tyres a year, ornearly 60% of such tyres scrapped everyyear nationwide. Work will begin in 2021, with

production scheduled to get underway in2023. More than $30 million will beinvested in building Michelin’s first new-generation end-of-life tyre processingplant. A comprehensive recycling solutionthat recovers everything in a tyre forreuse The new-generation recycling plant

will support the circular economy withinnovative recycling processes. Scraptyres will be collected directly fromcustomer premises, then transported tothe plant to be cut up and recycled. Enviro’s technology, which produces

new, high-quality reusable materials likecarbon black, pyrolysis oil, gas and steel, will enable everything in an end-of-lifetyre to be recovered for reuse.

Current plans call for 90% of therecovered materials to be reused in avariety of rubber-based products, suchas tyres, conveyor belts and anti-vibration products. The remaining 10%will be reused directly by the plant togenerate its own-use heat andpower. This initial recycling plant willenable Michelin to offer a comprehensiverecycling solution, from collecting end-of-life tyres to reusing the recovered rawmaterials in the manufacture of newproducts.“Thanks to this joint venture with

Enviro, we are very proud to announcethe construction of the Michelin Group'sfirst recycling plant,” said SanderVermeulen, Vice President, Marketing &Business Development, Strategy andNew Business for the High-TechMaterials business line. “This is a majormilestone that will enable us to offercustomers a new-generation recyclingsolution, while developing new businessfor the Group. We are currently in talkswith several Chilean mining customers tosign long-term contracts. By scaling up

Enviro’s technology, we are offering thema solution that will support theirenvironmental objectives and enablesthe development of a circular economy.” A further illustration of the Group’sexpansion in sustainable materialsThe future tyre recycling plant is fully

aligned with the Group's commitment toincorporating an increasing amount ofsustainable materials in its tyres, asillustrated by the VISION Concept.Aware that the speed and nature of

innovation in this area require new formsof cooperation, Michelin has positioneditself as a unifying force for developinginnovative partnerships across a diverserange of technological disciplines. This manifestation of the partnership

with Enviro follows on from otherinitiatives and partnerships forged withtrailblazers in the area of recycling andsustainable materials. Falken Tyre’s parent company,Sumitomo Rubber Industries (SRI)

has developed new tyre wear detectiontechnology to improve safety andcontribute to the realisation of newmobility trends that are transforming theautomotive industry.

This latest breakthrough advancesSRI’s proprietary Sensing Coretechnology. Thanks to SRI’s extensiveresearch into the dynamic behaviour oftyres, this innovative technology candetect various conditions related to thetyre, including pressure, load, and roadconditions, and now adds tyre wear to itscapabilities.

Specialised digital filtering technologyanalyses and interprets wheel speedsignals as the tyres rotate, combiningthis with engine data and other vehicleinformation to calculate tread rigidity anddetermine wear levels. The technologynot only alerts drivers to the wearcondition of their tyres, but also enablesthe centralised management of tyre

conditions over the cloud.Setting the technology apart, Sensing

Core uses the tyres as sensors andrequires no additional detectors, makingit completely maintenance free. With thecapability of sharing wheel speed signaldata and other pertinent information overthe cloud, Sensing Core also allows forcloud-based detection of potentialissues.

Along with additional advancementsto come, Sensing Core holds enormouspotential for future applications amongmobility and transport service providers, ensuring the overall safety of operationswhile significantly reducing maintenancecosts. It is a key technology contributingto SRI’s Smart Tyre Concept, which aimsto accelerate the development of tyresand peripheral services to meet thedemands of CASE (Connected,Autonomous, Shared, Electric), MaaS(Mobility as a Service) and other newmobility innovations that are shaping thefuture of the automotive industry.

Just over three years after its return tothe bicycle sector, Pirelli has rightfullybecome one of the big players in highprofile professional cycling. Today Pirelli isthe choice of prestigious professionalWorld Tour teams as well as elite andamateur teams in various cyclingdisciplines.Having reconfirmed for 2021 the

agreements with the top category UCIteams, Trek-Segafredo and TeamBikeExchange, Pirelli now announces apartnership with a third World Tour team:France’s AG2R CITROËN.The agreement, signed with Swiss bike

brand BMC, will see the World Tour team,as well as the Under 23 team, rideTeammachine SLR01 and TimemachineRoad 01 bikes equipped with Pirelli's toproad tyre technology: the brand-new PZero in both TLR (tubeless-ready) andtubular versions. For training, AG2R CITROËN Team will

also have at its disposal the Cinturatotyres, the super-strong TLR road tyre, ideal for achieving many kilometres incomplete safety and maximumperformance, over long distances and ona variety of road surfaces.

For Pirelli, the partnership with theteam is also, and above all, to support theevolution of the product, for a constantexchange of feedback on the tyres and acontinuous improvement in their

performance, thanks to the suggestions ofthe athletes.Olympic champion Greg Van Avermaet,

who had the opportunity to try Pirelli’s newP Zero Race TLR tyres during the team'straining camp on the Costa Blanca, commented: "Pirelli bring their greatexperience to cycling which is a hugebenefit so I’m happy to have Pirelli tyresnot only on my car but also on my bike.I’m super happy with the first impressions:rolling resistance and grip are good on wetroads which is very important in terms ofperformance and safety. I’m lookingforward to testing the tyres at higherspeed, at the races”.Vincent Lavenu, general manager of

the team, said: “As you know, we areopening a new chapter in our historybecoming AG2R CITROËN TEAM. Weare proud to work with the in-ternationallyrenowned brand that is Pirelli, which willoffer security, reliability, innovation andexperience to our riders. Anew hybrid tractor tyre fromContinental is now available in the

UK and Ireland to help with thedemanding road to field transitions ofsilage work. The very high flexion (VF)tyre is fitted with a pressure monitoringsensor and has a tread pattern that offerscomfort and durability on the road, whilstprotecting the sward in the field. “Hybrid tyres are safer, more efficient

and offer better comfort to the operator.Pressure sensor technology is the futureof tyre functionality because tyres can runat the optimum pressure on the road andin the field.” says Continental’sagricultural tyre specialist, RichardHutchins. The Continental VF TractorMaster

Hybrid tyre tread is designed to becomfortable on the road and offerexcellent grip in the field. The sensor inthe tyre communicates pressure andtemperature to a terminal in the cabwhich helps the operator decide on theoptimum running pressure. Whencoupled with onboard inflation

technology, tyre pressure can also beadjusted without leaving the tractor. “Underinflated tyres on the road

increase fuel consumption, whilstoverinflated tyres in the field lead toincreased soil compaction. TheContiPressureCheck™ sensor in thehybrid tyre helps the operator to monitorand choose the correct pressure to makethe vehicle kinder to the soil and moreefficient on the road,” says Mr Hutchins. The tyre was developed using

computer modelling in the research anddevelopment department at Continental’sagricultural manufacturing facility inLousado, Portugal. “This tyre has beenspecifically designed for users frequentlytransitioning from field to road. It isperfect for silage making and tractorstravelling long distances on the road,” hesays.Heavier, more powerful tractors are

increasingly being used on the road. Theneed to reduce wear through road usehas inspired the design of the new hybridtyre. “Heat build-up through heavy road

use causes conventional tyre rubber tosoften and wear more quickly. However, the tread design of our new

hybrid tyre helps to reduce thetemperature of the tyre which reduces thewear rate,” he says.VF tyres can carry forty percent more

load than a standard tyre at the samepressure. Alternatively, in the field, thepressure can be lowered by forty percent, even when carrying the same load. Thestructure of the VF tyre carcass is moreresistant than standard tyres so the tyrecan operate at lower pressures in thefield and at higher speeds on the road.

The Yokohama Rubber Co., Ltd.,announced that in December 2020 it

succeeded in developing a proprietarysystem that utilises AI to predict the physicalproperties of rubber compounds. Thesystem is already being used to designrubber compounds for Yokohama tyres.Yokohama Rubber expects the system’sability to conduct a large number of virtualexperiments will enable it to acceleratecompound development, reducedevelopment costs, and develop betterperforming products. The system also willmake it easier for less-experiencedengineers to create new compounds. The system was developed under

Yokohama Rubber’s new AI utilisationconcept, HAICoLab*, which was launchedin October 2020. The system uses AI topredict a rubber compound’s physicalproperties based on the rubber compounddesign parameters input by an engineer. Inaddition, to facilitate engineers' ability toconfirm predicted results, the systemincludes a function that displays the

certainty of predictedphysical properties andone that searches for acompound compositionthat will achieve physicalproperties closest to the targeted ones. Thenew system enables collaborationsbetween humans and AI that will lead to theacquisition of new knowledge. Goingforward, Yokohama Rubber will expand theuse of this new system for developingrubber compounds for use in tyres to a widerange of the company’s other products, including hoses and conveyor belts. * An acronym for “Humans and AI Collaborate” for digital innovation. It also has the meaning of a laboratory forjoint research by humans and AI.HAICoLab is a new concept aimed at

APT Tyre Distributors Ltd joins NTDAWell known tyre distributor APT Tyre Distributors Ltd, based in Goole in Yorkshire, has become the latest company to join both the Association and the TyreLink scheme in a year where already a record number of new members have been attracted.

APT was established in 1993 by Alan Payling, who has over 40 years experience in the tyre trade. As ‘total tyre specialists’, APT offers the complete tyre service for cars, commercial truck, industrial and agricultural vehicles together with quality service and expertise, including a fast and efficient 24-hour breakdown service within a 25-mile radius of Goole.

Through the Bridgestone Partner, Tyrenet and Hankook Truck Masters networks, all of which are also supplier members of the NTDA, APT offers customers both National and European breakdown coverage for tyres. APT also works closely with NTDA supplier members Michelin and Continental.

Speaking about the membership, Alan Payling said: “We are a small company that are able to speak to our customers personally, ensuring that they receive relevant and up to the minute information regarding their enquiry and then excellent follow up service. I believe joining the NTDA is a must for all professional tyre distributors, as the Association brings together all of the member’s expertise, knowledge and information under one banner and represents and protects their interests on a daily basis.”

Commenting on the growth in membership, the NTDA Membership Secretary Alison Keitch said: “Clearly we are thrilled to have APT Tyre Distributors Ltd join the NTDA and we are delighted to be able to say that in the first two months of 2021, we have welcomed 20 new tyre distributors from across the UK and 2 excellent supplier members into membership. Our network of professionals is growing and becoming stronger, day by day, and we are now hoping that we will get to meet many of these new members in person at the various events we are intending to both attend and hold this year, providing we get out of lockdown!”

For further information about membership of the NTDA, contact Membership Secretary Alison Keitch via T: 01296 482128 or E: [email protected]

NTDA members show optimism regarding 2021 eventsWith COVID-19 infection levels and related deaths thankfully falling across the UK and record numbers of people now receiving their first vaccinations, the NTDA is seeing that members are starting to be optimistic about the opportunities to network with their industry peers this year.

Already close to 70 people have booked to attend the NTDA Tyre Industry Golf Day and Dinner planned for the 1st June at the Oxfordshire Golf Hotel and Spa in Thame with one member recently commenting: “I am delighted that you are trying to get the event going under such difficult circumstances!”

The team at Aylesbury has also seen a recent flurry of booking activity for the 7th NTDA Tyre Industry Conference sponsored by GB Tyres Ltd and Linglong Tire and the 92nd NTDA Annual Dinner sponsored by Maritime Cargo Services and the Tyre Industry Awards sponsored by Sailun.

In addition to the many sponsors, several further companies have now booked tables for the annual dinner and the Association has also received a number of stand bookings from aftermarket suppliers wishing to exhibit at the conference.

Commenting on this interest, NTDA Chief Executive Stefan Hay said: “Obviously we are being sensibly cautious, as it is still far too early to say what will happen later in the year and when we will get back to some semblance of normality, but members definitely appear to be more confident that events will be happening and we also want to be positive. Whatever happens, we will have a conference and an awards ceremony in 2021, as it is important that we recognise the achievements of our members and their employees, especially now, but what remains to be seen is whether those events will be actual, virtual or a combination of both!”

An innovator in wheel refurbishment isheralding its latest ‘cutting-edge’

machinery for the automotiveaftermarket, which not only saves hoursof time in repair work, but also opens upa significant new revenue stream worthhundreds of pounds per day.

Diamond Cut Refinishing (DCR) hasdeveloped a range of solutions to provideOEM quality refinishing to diamondturned alloy wheels, which haveovertaken traditional painted alloys as themost common product on the market.

Designed and manufactured in theUK from its Portsmouth headquarters,DCR has created a world first solution tomeet the changing trend, which canrestore diamond cut wheels in as little as20 minutes.

The technology that is supplementedby comprehensive product training isaimed at automotive depots and fast fitnetworks which would otherwise have toreallocate the work to a third party, resulting in time delays and a missedrevenue opportunity.

In addition to the machinery, DCR isalso offering other models to suit thebudgets and staffing constraints ofdifferent customers, such as a business-in-a-box concept.

DCR can count on Aston Martin andBMW MINI as customers and ManagingDirector, Steve Barrett said “businesshad never been more buoyant in 2020,despite the challenges imposed by

COVID-19 and the ongoing lockdownrestrictions”.

Its DCR-PRO Diamond CutRefinishing Machine requires just astandard 13amp supply and can be usedas a mobile solution or anywhere in aworkshop where a power socket isavailable. In addition, DCR hasdeveloped a patented ‘Wheel Pod’ wheelrepair centre which is a standalonesolution that can be dropped into a carpark and be entirely managed and run byDCR on a company’s behalf, ifnecessary.

Key features of the machine areenhanced productivity (a 20inch wheelcan be restored in under 30 minutes), arevolutionary compact design to fit in avan and the ability to cut wheels from14inch to 24inch without the need toremove the tyre.

Steve said: “One reason for our rapidgrowth is the fact that new car sales areon the decline and people are opting tomaintain the vehicles that they have andincrease in used car sales.“Secondly, customers are looking at

other revenue streams and opportunitiesto upsell, which is what our solutionsprovide. Despite the obvious challengeswe’re all facing, many sensiblebusinesses are investing governmentloan support into their products andequipment for the future.”

DCR can help with leasing themachine for as little as £29.50 a day.Customers can make more than £350 inprofit when re-cutting four wheels in aday.

And because DCR already counts on

a number of insurance companies, fleetmanagement companies and car rentalfirms as contacts, demand may havealready been established in many partsof the country.

Steve has worked in the automotiveaftermarket for 30 years and employsnine members of staff from DCR’s 25,000sq.ft. Portsmouth base.

He added: “We offer training fortechnicians and can provide a solution tosuit the bespoke needs of each business. To be able to restore diamond cut wheelalloys represents a huge revenueopportunity and with more motoriststaking pride in maintaining their existingvehicles, we know that the demand forthe nature of this work is already there.”For more information:www.dcr.world.com

the new 315/80 R22.5 X Multi Energyhas demonstrated a fuel saving of up to0.7 litres per 100 km compared to aregular X Multi tyre in the same size, whilst still delivering excellent longevity.Tests also highlighted a reduction inCO2 emissions of 1.8 kg per 100 km.Chris Smith, Managing Director of

Michelin UK, says: “Traditionally, low

rolling resistance ‘Energy’ tyres havebeen aimed at long-distance fleetswhere the bulk of the work is on trunkroads at sustained high averagespeeds. However, the growing X MultiEnergy range means we can now offera fuel-saving tyre to even more regionalhauliers. They are perfect for firmswhich want the benefits of low rollingresistance, but also have to cope withroundabouts and stop / startoperations.“The government has set a target of

reducing greenhouse gas emissionsfrom HGVs by 15 per cent by 2025 –and these new tyres will directly helpfleets to be more sustainable.”The X Multi Energy tyres’ ultra-

efficient performance is the result ofhaving a higher silicon content thanstandard tyres, but with clever mixingtechniques to ensure a high mileagepotential is maintained. They also benefit from four of

Michelin’s latest technologies includingInfiniCoil, a continuous steel wire up to400 metres long, wrapped around thetyre to provide greater tread stability, enhancing fuel savings and longevity;plus Regenion, which helps maintaingrip throughout the tyre’s life viaregenerating tread blocks which evolveas the tyre wears. The casing is further enhanced with

Ever since Kane Group adoptedContinental’s tyre pressure

monitoring system,ContiPressureCheck, across its fleet oftipper trucks, the contractor andaggregate supplier has never lookedback. As a leading player in one of themost demanding sectors for commercialvehicles and equipment, the teamneeded a way to reduce their escalatingtyre costs, whilst boosting reliability andoverall safety. The implementation ofContiPressureCheck across its fleet hasproven to be the perfect fix for thecompany’s challenging needs.

Operating across the South-East ofEngland since 1983, a deep level ofknowledge, understanding andprofessionalism has seen Kane Groupdevelop from a loose muck-away andaggregates business into a multifacetedearthworks, construction, demolition andwaste removal firm. Based in St Albans,Hertfordshire, the group incorporatesfive separate companies and holds acombined fleet totalling more than£7million.

“In the harsh, tough environmentsthat our trucks are working in every day,it’s inevitable that the tyres are going totake a kicking,” explains TransportManager, Jordan Kane. “To meet theneeds of our customers, we frequentlydrive off-road on tracks littered withsharp rocks with a heavy payload. Thisputs a huge strain on the performanceof the tyre that, without carefulmanagement, can rapidly develop anissue. In the worst-case scenario, thatcould leave a vehicle stranded, acustomer disappointed and require us tofit a costly replacement.”

Prior to fitting Continental’sContiPressureCheck, Kane Groupstruggled to maximise the working life ofits tyres. Damage was common andtyres were being removed from serviceprematurely. “Tyres, or more specificallydealing with tyre failures, is anexpensive cost to the business and it’san outgoing that traditionally has beenhard to control,” Jordan admits. “In thisline of work, it’s very easy to run anunder-pressure tyre, butContiPressureCheck has undoubtedlyhelped to remedy this issue.”

The ContiPressureCheck digital tyremonitoring system offers drivers precise,real-time status information about the

condition of a vehicle’s tyres. Throughthe continuous monitoring of internal airpressure and temperature via sensors, the system will warn the driver ofchanges before the situation becomescritical. Adaptable for the needs andrequirements of most commercial fleets, the system can be effectively utilisedboth on-and-off road and can beefficiently scaled dependant on demand.

“When we discoveredContiPressureCheck, we were reallyimpressed with both its capability andpotential to deliver a real benefit to ourbusiness,” says Jordan. “It was clear tosee that once we began implementing iton our trucks, we were able to reducethe number of tyre failures. We do stillget punctures now and again, but whenthis happens, they are typicallyrepairable, where previously the tyrewas more likely to be written offaltogether. Put simply,ContiPressureCheck has saved us a lotof time, a lot of grief and a lot of money. It’s certainly paid for itself very quickly insavings and it’s meant that we can offeran even more reliable service to ourcustomers, which is fantastic.”

Following an initial trial, KaneGroup’s relationship with Continentalhas grown, with the company nowutilising ContiPressureCheck on morethan 30 vehicles. “The service wereceive from Continental is second tonone,” Jordan recounts. “I’d love to saythat they go above and beyond to helpus out, but they don’t need to, as they’vealways got everything under control.”

The company was introduced to thesystem by Ian Jackson, Digital Solutionsand Technical Systems Manager atContinental Tyres. “We’re always on

hand to support our clients throughoutthe ContiPressureCheck ownershipexperience,” explains Ian. “I waspleased to guide the team through theproduct and help them find a solution tofit their needs. Kane Group has a trulyknowledgeable in-house service andmaintenance division, so they were ableto fit the product to the fleet themselves. We’re delighted that the system hashelped them to not only increase thelongevity of their tyres but also allowedthem to reap the benefits on aspectssuch as safety too.”

Safety is crucial in the Kane Group’soperations, and Jordan is keen tohighlight that the mitigation of risk is asimportant to the firm as cost-saving. “Wehave a duty not only to our staff, but toour customers and other road users thatour trucks are in a safe, roadworthycondition at all times. Roadsidebreakdowns are always dealt withquickly and safely, but it is, of course, much safer for a truck not to be in thatposition. ContiPressureCheck meansour drivers can act before it’s too late, either allowing them to identify apotential problem before their shift evenstarts or informing them that they canfind a safe place to stop if already enroute.

Thanks to ContiPressureCheck,Kane Group has transformed itsapproach to tyre management, keepingits trucks out on the roads for longerwhilst also bringing safety and servicebenefits too. “The ContiPressureChecksystem remains, in our opinion at least, the best commercial TPMS on themarket today,” Jordan concludes. “We’redelighted at the results and we can’t seethat changing any time soon”.

Tyre dealers are used to the customerdemand for products which are as

efficient as possible, to maximise valueand improve bottom line margins.Retreads are one of the most effectiveways to drive down costs, while alsolessening environmental impact.

For Continental Tyres, retreads are animportant part of its commercial vehicleoffering, via both its ContiRe andBandvulc branded product line up. Benefits of retreads

As well as being a moreenvironmentally sound option, a correctlyused retread is more cost-effective in thelong term – answering both customerpurchase drivers. For example, a retreadcosts around 70-75% of the price of abrand-new tyre, offering excellent valuefor money and significantly reducingrunning costs in a competitive market.

Low-cost, single-life tyres may offer acheaper option at purchase, but they arenot always suitable for retreading andtherefore cost more to scrap and replace.Premium tyres, such as thosemanufactured by Continental, aredesigned and built with the ability to beretreaded in the future.

Tony Stapleton Head of Group FleetSales, at Continental Tyres notes, “Tyredealers can assure their customers thatretreaded tyres still offer outstandingperformance and endurance. Bandvulc isthe UK’s leading commercial retreader, with 50 years’ experience in retreadingand casing management for high-qualityretreads in both Continental’s ContiReand Bandvulc brands. All ContiRe andBandvulc tyres adhere to ECE Reg 109 –a compulsory standard for producingretreaded tyres, which ensures that theyfulfil similar safety and quality controlrequirements for new tyres.

At the Bandvulc UK-based facility inIvybridge, each casing is subject to up to20 different quality assurance checks, before releasing it for road use. Specialcompounds created by our own rubbermixing facility, Bandvulc Mixing, offerbenefits for longer life, low rollingresistance and damage reduction. For

these reasons, the claim ratio for ourretreaded tyres is as low as it is for ournew tyres.”Sustainable tyres born fromsustainable manufacturing

A retreaded tyre saves 80% of thematerials required to manufacture a newtyre, therefore significantly reducing theimpact on the environment. This meanswe are able to save 30kg of rubbercompound, up to 20kg of steel and 60kgof CO2 on every retread tyre we producecompared to a new tyre.

In addition, retreading tyres reducesscrapping, exportation and incineration ofworn-out tyres which, over the course ofa year, can release over 160,000 tonnesof CO2 into the air.

The advanced energy monitoringsystem we have at our Ivybridgemanufacturing facility, keeps close trackof the energy levels and output of everypiece of equipment across the wholefactory, ensuring environmentalsustainability and efficiency at everystage of the process. The factory hasalso introduced a zero-to-landfill policy, which ensures that no production wastegoes to landfill and, as a result, 100% ofthe factory’s waste is recycled. Evenrubber dust, buffed off during thepreparation process, is recycled back intonew tyres.Get on the case

If fleets wish to truly reap the benefitsthat retreading can bring, they shouldalso ensure they understand how goodtyre casing management can help.

Tony Stapleton says, “For bestpossible cost efficiency, the fleet needs toensure that they are maximising thenumber of casings that are suitable forretreading. Good tyre husbandry, such asensuring tyre pressure maintenance, regular inspections for damage etc. canalso help to ensure a high level of casingacceptance, which is crucial for retreads.

A key area to ensure the casing will beaccepted for processing is the conditionof the belt package. It’s for this reason

the correct regrooving methodology isused, for example, the blade is at thecorrect depth, and the tyre manufacturersrecommended pattern guidelines areadhered to.

It’s important to check the generalcondition of the tread and monitor it forexcessive stone retention, which canmigrate through the groove base andcompromise the integrity of the beltpackage. Casing management

After Continental collect a fleet’s tyresand returns them to its plant in Ivybridge, the casings are professionally inspectedby the in-house team. They determinewhether the casing can be retreaded. This process can also shed light on anyapplication or usage concerns, whichresult in the tyre being removedprematurely or the casing beingunsuitable for retreading.

For example, the checks can identify ifthe tyre has been placed on the wrongaxle, if the wheel is misaligned, or thetyre has been run under- or over-inflated.In any of these scenarios, the inspectionteam can often determine the cause ofdamage from the state of the tread andcan provide constructive advice back tothe fleet operator / service provider toaddress any application or usage issuesand improve fleet performance, efficiencyand safety.

Tony Stapleton adds, “Some casingsunfortunately will not be suitable forretreading and so have to be responsiblydisposed of. We are a member of theTyre Recovery Association and havenumerous contracts with certified wastecollection providers to ensure that ourscrap casings are collected, reprocessedor reused in an environmentally friendlymanner. Many scrap tyres are used as analternative fuel such as in cement kilns, rubber granules are re-used inrecreational surfaces such asplaygrounds or artificial sports pitchesand steel cords are supplied to ironfoundries to be re-melted and re-used.

From Petrol toElectric - The DX440 DriversGet the Job Done

New van sales may have fallen in2020 but light commercial vans have

been vital in keeping economiesfunctioning during the pandemic.New van sales fell by 20% in the UK

last year, but demand for deliveries roserapidly, with demand from online retailrising 36% and a growing need formedical supplies.

And as the global van fleet begins thetransition to electric, tyre manufacturersneed to be prepared to ensure that allvehicles can safely operate to maintainhealthcare and retail supply chains andget tradesmen back to work safely assoon as the economies begin to open upsafely.

Davanti Tyres is leading the way withits versatile and tough DX440.Engineered to keep the traditional vanfleet on the road with longer intervalsbetween replacements, the DX440remains responsive even under heavyload. It is the ideal tyre to keep vandrivers moving.

As van drivers and fleets move togreener technology, they can continue torely on the DX440 after it was granted100% OE specification for the LEVC VN5electric van.

“What van drivers need has notchanged,” said Sean Maddocks, DavantiTyres’ Sales Director for the UK andIreland.

“They want tyres that operate safely, that are cost-effective and that canwithstand both punishing terrain andsignificant loads. At a time when peopleare relying on the fleet, whether formedical supplies, home deliveries oremergency repairs - reliability is criticaland that is what the DX440 delivers.

“When those drivers, tradesmen and

fleet managers decide to make the switchto greener electric power, they will stillexpect the same performance from theirtyres despite the different characteristicsof an electric vehicle compared to an ICEvan.“With Davanti they have that

consistency, because the DX440specified on the VN5 is the same tyrethey currently fit. It delivers the sameoutstanding control, comfort andlongevity.“New van sales will pick up but the

DX440 is designed for all van drivers. When you need to keep going, Davanti isthere with you.”Discover Davanti at:www.davanti-tyres.com.

The K225 has been designed byKRAIBURG for long-distance andregional road traffic. The distinctivefeature of this block-type design withopen shoulders is the high number ofribs which provide optimum traction andgrip in wintry conditions and an excellenthard-wearing surface. The design withthe premium K_plus compound ensuresan “experienceable” added value:Depending on the application, it canachieve a mileage of more than 155,000miles.

The highly transverse K228 block-type design for mixed use on the roadand on the construction site featuresopen tread shoulders and allows very

good transmission of the traction forces. Its great tread depth makes it aneffective all-season tread. The purposelyopen tread design with block-typeinterlacing ensures good self-cleaning inall weathers and on all surfaces. Inaddition, the K228 scores highly withanother special feature: As it is a nondirectional pattern it can be used flexibly.K_plus patterns convince with gripand mileage"Our premium line K_plus

General Tire: A Van Tyre for Every Season

General Tire, the tradition-rich tyrebrand with its American heritage,

continues its product offensive with arange of summer, winter and all-seasonvan tyres. With an increase in onlinedeliveries, choosing the right tyres is animportant decision to preventunnecessary downtime and ensureefficient service. General Tire’s vanrange provide a tyre for every weathercondition.

Eurovan 2The Eurovan 2 is a robust performer

for vans and transporters. Durability androbustness are key for van drivers, andthe Eurovan 2 provides this with anextra veneer of rubber on the sidewall. This ensures that any kerb contactencountered by vans does not harm thetyre. In wet-weather driving, its widethree circumferential drainage groovestake up large amounts of water anddirect it away from the contact patchthrough broad grooves in the outer treadblocks. The opposing grooves betweenthe outer tread blocks are staggered, keeping tyre and road noise low andincreasing driving comfort. Precisedirectional stability and short brakingdistances are assured by the wide, sturdy rows of tread blocks in the centreof the tyre that make for effectivetransmission of circumferential andlateral forces to the road.

The Eurovan 2 is available in 23different sizes for 14 to 16-inch rims.

Eurovan A/S 365The Eurovan A/S 365 offers light

commercial vehicles and vans excellentperformance in all weathers, for all year-round safety. The Eurovan A/S 365provides safe handling properties on wetand dry roads, as well as good dynamicstability on wintry roads.

To deliver this performance it relieson a tread pattern with zigzag sipes forsecure interlocking with wet roadsurfaces and wide tread grooves thatdisperse water fast. The numerousedges interlock effectively with snow, while specially designed “pockets” retainthe snow to deliver snow/snow friction. When driving on dry roads, wide ribs inthe centre of the tread make for highstability, while special handling ribsprovide effective tread support oncornering. The Eurovan A/S 365 bearsthe M+S mark and the three-peakmountain snowflake symbol to signifysafe handling on snow-coveredsurfaces.

The Eurovan A/S 365 is available in15 sizes, for rims between 15 and 16inches.

Eurovan Winter 2The Eurovan Winter 2 provides a

safe passage even in extreme weather

conditions. The Eurovan Winter 2 isequipped with a tread design thatcreates an ‘ice-scraper’ effect. Thisallows for exceptional traction andhandling on snow due to the largenumber of sipes and edges. Additionalsnow pockets in the tread significantlyimprove the grip as a result of theincreased snow on snow traction. Widedrainage channels ensure rapid waterdispersal, providing better protectionagainst aquaplaning and increasedbraking performance on wet roads. Animproved pattern design allows for safeand precise cornering. The EurovanWinter 2 bears the M+S mark and thethree-peak mountain snowflake symbolto signify safe handling on snow-covered surfaces.

It is encouraging to see the lightcommercial vehicle sector performingexceptionally well in January, with a 2%increase in registrations, thanks to dealers’ability to meet demand through click &collect services and deliveries, despite thecurrent constraints affecting physicaldealerships”, said Sue Robinson, ChiefExecutive of the National FranchisedDealers Association (NFDA) whichrepresents franchised commercial vehicledealers in the UK, commenting on thelatest SMMT’s light van market figures.

The overall increase was driven by thedemand for larger vans weighing morethan 2.5-3.5 tonnes (up 25.4%) that areoften used for goods distribution and

online deliveries. These vehicles aregenerally purchased by larger operatorswho do not need showrooms to be openand plan their vehicle needs well inadvance.

The strong demand in the heavy sectoroffset the significant declines in sales oflighter vans and pick-ups that are usuallybought by smaller businesses, self-employed and semi-retail customers whowould often transact in a showroom.

The biggest decline came from thesmall van sector under 2.0 tonnes, down50.1%. These vehicles tend to be used asservice vans and may indicate a possibledecline in demand for service engineersand technicians that usually operate oncall at residential properties.

Pick-ups suffered a 25.8% decline;many of these vehicles are acquired forthe dual business and leisure purpose bythe self-employed and are often orderedon dealer premises as customers requiremore detailed specifications.

The clear winner in volume terms inJanuary was Ford, with a 35.7% marketshare as its Transit Custom and HeavyTransit took the first and second positionin registrations. The third best seller wasVauxhall with a 12.3% market share, thanks to the success of its new Vivarothat offers a wide range of modelsincluding an electric version.

Sue Robinson added: “It is alsopositive that recently introduced batteryand plug-in electric vans have started toget some traction, with an overall 3.6%market share in a sector that has in thepast been dominated by diesel poweredvehicles.

“These figures indicate a healthyeconomy and dealers are optimistic aboutthe 2021 LCV market, however there areconcerns around consumer confidence, the length of the lockdown and vehiclesupply constraints that may hold themarket back in the first quarter of thisyear”.

We striveto help our customers as much as wecan and will continue to offer thisminimum order as long as it is neededand as long as we can support the extracosts involved.”

As well as the above, free promotionalmaterial has been sent out for exclusiveproducts to help customers sell andpromote their own businesses andproducts. This material has includedbanners, leaflets, mugs, and pens forbusinesses to offer to end users andpromote sales. International Tyres areworking hard to ensure customers feelsupported by the business and arestriving to make customer relationshipsmore than just transactional. Companyfounder and MD Paul Jackson hasworked closely with many of their

customers to develop and grow thecustomers businesses and build lastingworking relationships. The effects of thisare seen in the fantastic growth of thecompany, which has been built on thisadded value and customer relationships.

The basic selling point for InternationalTyres is that they offer a comprehensivestock range and can deliver quickly, andefficiently, to customers all over the UK.This alone is good but, according tointernational tyres, the bare minimum ofwhat they want to feel customers can getwhen buying from them. InternationalTyres will be continuing to offer more tolet customers appreciate how valued theyare and how collaboration has been theirkey to success. Marketing ManagerJenny Edwards quotes: “We implore anycustomer to come to us if they feel theyneed extra support for their business, wehave resources and knowledge that issometimes hard to come by in ourindustry; including web building, socialmedia, promotional material etc. Our aimgoes further than selling tyres, we want toencourage customers to grow becausethe better they do then the better we do.”

Commercial customers are becomingincreasingly interested in extending

the life cycle of their tyres throughtechnologies such as retreading and thebenefits this can bring for their fleets.Goodyear’s Multiple Life concept, whichsees many truck tyres regrooved andretreaded in order to extend theirservice lifetime of a tyre. Thissignificantly reduces the number of tyresthat need to be recycled, one of thecompany’s sustainability developments.Kate Norton (Sales General ManagerCommercial UK&I) answers questionssurrounding how retreading can benefitfleets.

What are the benefits of the Multiple Life Concept? There are multiple benefits to using a

retreaded tyre. Firstly, they deliver up to25% more mileage, whilst lowering thetyre costs by up to 30%. They also usesignificantly less oil, chemicals andother raw materials compared to a new

tyre, and their production causes feweremissions. All of this delivers aconsiderably more sustainable model ofproduction. In general, we seeretreading as an essential part ofmaximising a fleet’s economy by helpingto reduce its total cost of ownership, andCO2 emissions per km. Professionaltyre management, including retreadingand regrooving, helps fleet operatorsreduce total cost of ownership.

How much longer can retreadingextend a tyres life?Opting for a premium brand such as

Goodyear and regrooving/retreading canextend the lifetime of a tyre by 2.5 timeson average. Our retread products aremanufactured following the same high-quality standards, offering similarperformance and benefits as newproducts. Retreading is done in-houseat Goodyear retread facilities acrossEurope.

What do Goodyear offer in thisinitiative?Retread offers economies of scale as

less raw materials and resources areused in comparison to a new tyre.

Goodyear offers fleet operators threemold cure retread purchase options -Casing Exchange, Customer OwnedCasing or Casing Purchase. WithCasing Exchange, the worn tyre is sentto Goodyear and a new retread tyre issupplied in exchange. Customer OwnedCasing involves the customer’s own tyrebeing retreaded by Goodyear andreturned as a new retread product of ourbrands– the retreading process is theonly cost, as the performance offered bythe retreaded product is similar to thenew tyre. With Casing Purchase, theworn tyre is purchased by Goodyear, retreaded and sold to any customer. For us it is important to offer the fullrange of different retreading options tomeet the different needs of ourcustomers.

What retread options do youcurrently offer for customers? We offer two retread options to fleet

customers: TreadMax for Goodyear andDunlop casings (latest generations) anda generic offer with NextTread forcompetitor’s casing along withGoodyear and Dunlop previousgenerations of casings.

Extensive Range of ‘Around The Wheel’ Products

Garage Equipment SpecialistsHofmann Megaplan have one of the

largest choices of alignment and balancingproducts the industry has to offer.

Last year the company invested in afurther 20,000 sqft of warehousing in orderto be able to accommodate an expansionof their range; an expansion that saw themadd several new alignment products, andalso increase the availability of the productthat made them famous and is still to thisday their best-selling line – wheelbalancers.

One of the most significantintroductions in 2020 was the new Logik 6CCD aligner, which has the ability to workon a 2 post lift or short platform scissor lift,a feature that has opened up theopportunity of wheel alignment to a wholenew market.

“Many customers simply don’t haveroom for a 4 post lift or large scissor lift”,comments Hofmann Megaplan’s head ofproduct development James Boon. “Theability to carry out alignment on a 2 postlift, thanks to significant software andhardware developments, was therefore areal game changer”.

All of Hofmann Megaplans alignmentequipment is managed by 5 dedicatedgeometry experts, further supported byanother 55 regional technicians across theUK handling the full range of productincluding tyre equipment, lifts, MOT anddiagnostic products.

However, despite a huge emphasis onalignment in recent years, HofmannMegaplan still maintain that their biggestfocus remains on wheel balancers, wherean enviable history has seen thembecome a clear market leader.

By far the most popular is themegaspin 420, which is a highperformance balancer with what thecompany claim to be the fastest floor-to-floor balancing time in the industry. This isachieved through their patented OWB(One Weight Balance) software, wherebythe balancer can achieve both a static anddynamic balance with the application ofjust one single weight.

To speed up the balancing processeven further, the megaspin 420 has a ‘NoCheckspin’ function, so the traditionalcheckspin to check for zero/zero simplyisn’t required. For further information on theHofmann Megaplan range visit:www.hofmann-megaplan.co.uk

WHEEL BALANCING & ALIGNMENT

Porsche dealers across the UK will nowbe able to diagnose and solve

customers’ wheel vibration issues at amuch faster rate as the vehiclemanufacturer has approved the use of theHunter Road Force Elite (RFE) diagnosticwheel balancer in its workshops acrossthe country.

The sophisticated wheel balancingsystem is the perfect match for the eliteengineering at the heart of the Porschebrand, allowing dealers to solve even themost difficult wheel balance issues andensure vehicle owners continue enjoyingthe elite driving experience their Porscheprovides.

“We are delighted to welcome Porscheas the latest premium vehiclemanufacturer to approve the use of the

Hunter Road Force Elite in its dealersacross the UK,” comments CliveSeabrook, CEO, Pro-Align. “The RFE isan innovative system that helps dealers toprovide quick diagnostics and a solutionthat is much faster than the traditionalwheel balancers available on the market.”

Hunter’s Road Force Elite differs fromstandard balancers as it measures forcesknown as Road Force Vibration (RFV) andLateral Force (LF), conducting a fulldiagnostic of the wheel and tyre assembly. To achieve this, the RFE scans the wheelrim and applies a load roller to simulate aroad test.

Indeed, traditional wheel balancersstruggle to solve the most challengingwheel vibration issues, which can oftenresult in customers having to makemultiple trips to workshops to resolvethese issues. However, the RFE canprovide a fast, first-time fix to these issuesand allow dealers to save costs throughtime efficiencies and improved levels ofcustomer satisfaction.

What’s more, wheel vibration issuesare becoming an increasing challenge forworkshops as more electric vehiclesappear on the roads. Without the typicalvibrations commonly associated with aninternal combustion engine, drivers of

electric vehicles are now much moreaware of any vibrations generated by thewheel and tyre combination.

The latest RFE supersedes the popularsystem previously approved, reducingbalance and repair times by 35 percent toless than two minutes per assembly.

“The exceptional quality and prestigethat is embedded within the foundations ofa Porsche mean the equipment used tomaintain such excellence has to be ofequal status, which is why a premiumsystem, such as the Hunter Road ForceElite can provide a level of service thatPorsche owners deserve,” concludesSeabrook.

Porsche has chosen the RFE to beused exclusively on the all-electric Taycan, the first electric car to be rolled out by theluxury vehicle manufacturer, and furtheruse can be expected on any future modelsadded to the brands high-end fleet.

driver assistance system (ADAS)equipped vehicles, has been a priority ofHella Gutmann Solutions (HGS) sincetheir introduction, which is why wepioneered an aftermarket solution withthe development of our Camera andSensor Calibration or CSC-Tool in 2012,”explains Neil Hilton, Head of HGS UK.“Despite an increase in alternative

options, the majority of workshopsrecognise our developmental credentialsand pedigree, acknowledging that we stilllead the market in this technology. Beingin this position also means we are able torespond to their needs and add to andmodify our tools to address them quickly.“With this thought in mind, we are

delighted to announce the introduction ofthe HGS CSC-Tool SE (second edition),the first major upgrade to the existingsystem, which further increases its scopeand usability across a wider range ofvehicles to include the largest SUVs andmore light commercial vehicles. We havealso launched the HGS Wheel AlignmentKit, to provide workshops with an all-in-one solution.

“Technicians carrying out calibration ofcamera, radar and lidar-based assistancesystems have to understand that it reliesupon the vehicle’s correct wheelalignment, especially the thrust axis (rearaxle), so without establishing this startingpoint, the process cannot be verified asaccurate.“Responding to the needs of

workshops without their own wheelalignment equipment, we have thereforeintroduced the HGS Wheel AlignmentKit, which enables them to quickly andaccurately establish the correct wheelalignment and thrust angle benchmarks,to undertake the ADAS calibrationprocess with complete confidence.“The Wheel Alignment Kit can be

used independently of the CSC-Tool toenable workshops to expand their rangeof services to include wheel and chassisalignment and allows them to determine, and if necessary to adjust, toe, camber, caster, KPI and rear thrust angle, as wellas steering wheel alignment on vehicleswith a wheel diameter up to 22 inches.“When it comes to the CSC-Tool SE,

the modifications that have beenadopted have extended its already

impressive capabilities and furtherrefined the system, which togetherincrease its ability to cater for a widerrange of applications. This is particularlyuseful for vehicles with radar sensorsthat are mounted higher up, like largerSUVs and lower down, such asperformance orientated vehicles.Other refinements include greater

protection of the mirrors that areintegrated into the horizontal adjustmentbar, which itself is also redesigned tomake it adjustable by a single technicianand with an extra 10cm to increase therange of vehicles that can be calibrated.Another practical measure is the use oflarger diameter castors that improve thetools manoeuvrability. We haveintroduced line lasers on the wheelclamp modules, enabling faster setuptimes.“Finally, as both systems, the CSC-

Tool SE, as well as the Wheel AlignmentKit, are modular the combination allowsworkshops to provide a solution thatsuits individual requirements, but alsowith a level of accuracy that providestheir customers with a level of service onwhich they can truly rely upon.”

TyreWatch, the smart technology tyremonitoring experts are using the

latest JOSAM Cam-aligner wheelalignment system to diagnose andcorrect mis-aligned vehicles which thecompany says, represents 33% of the UKlogistics industry.Supplied by JOSAM’s UK distributor

Automotive Equipment Solutions UK(AES UK) the JOSAM Cam -aligner is acompact, mobile system which usespatented camera technology togetherwith the ‘centreline principle’ to determinethe position of axles and individualwheels in relation to the square of thevehicle.TyreWatch Field Service Technician,Gary Jerrim, explains:“This system lines up to the whole

vehicle frame and with just a half turn ofthe wheel, all readings are sent to thelaptop, including steering box, camber,out-of-square and toe, to allow instantdiagnosis and subsequent adjustmentwhere possible. Less advanced wheel

alignment systems typically just checkfrom the drive axle or hang off the wheelitself but because many of these can beout of alignment, or in the case of wheels(damaged), it’s impossible to get accuratereadings and complete alignment of allthe vehicle’s independent working parts.”According to TyreWatch, just one

degree out of alignment between thewheels and/or the vehicle centre willcause a 10% deficiency in tyre wear, resulting in a reduction in fuelconsumption, additional engine strain andpotential blow-outs from overheating. Also, says Gary, the ongoing

mechanical stress caused to the driveaxles and steering system willcompromise the vehicle’s performance, while from an environmental standpoint, continual tyre abrasion greatlycontributes to air pollution as microparticulates are dispersed into theatmosphere. To guard against unnecessary cost,

safety issues and harmful emissions,

TyreWatch use their unique smart-connected technology, harnessingreal-time telematics communication, tomonitor special wheel-mounted sensorsand download all relevant dataconcerning the status of each tyre. From this information any cases of

excessive wear are automaticallyidentified and relayed to the vehicleoperator, who can then take thenecessary steps to diagnose alignmentissues and adjust as necessary.“This is where the Cam-aligner comes

in – sort of full circle,” adds Gary Jerrim“the added advantage is that owing to thelightweight mobility of the system, we cango straight to the vehicle to carry out allrequisite checks and corrections and theoperator saves on the downtime and costof having to send the vehicle back to thedealer.” In this regard, Gary points outthat the system is approved by OEMssuch as Mercedes-Benz Truck, Bus &Van, Scania, Volvo and Renault Truckand Van.

WHEEL BALANCING & ALIGNMENT

Exclusively Available Through EverardAs the sole UK provider of Beissbarth

equipment, Everard were proud tointroduce the newest Beissbarthinnovation to their extensive equipmentrange earlier this year. The Q.Lign is theworld’s first web-based wheel aligner.Independent garage equipment

supplier Everard, is continually workingwith their partners to develop andinnovate their portfolio of garageequipment. Together, with Beissbarth, they’d taken into consideration both painpoints and best features of existingalignment equipment to come up withthe design and functionality of theQ.Lign.

The completely new hardware andsoftware puts speed and connectivity atthe very front of the alignment process, without compromising on accuracy andrepeatability. Completely wireless thanksto high-performance Li-ion batteries, it’sfast to install and flexible to use asmeasuring can take place at any liftposition.

A common pain point of conventionalalignment systems is the classic PCcabinet setup. Traditional PCs canstruggle with vibrations, humidity, temperature fluctuations and dust within

the workshop environment. The Q.Lign’scompact web-based system has notraditional PC, reducing the risk of failureand allowing a more tailored and flexibleapproach. The Stream-to-X technologymirrors the Q.Lign’s software, so tabletsand other wireless devices can be usedinstead during the checking process andwhen showing results to customers. Byreplacing the need for a classic cabinetsetup, the increasingly valuable space atthe front of the vehicle can instead beused for adjusting intelligent headlightsand calibrating the variety of ADASsystems fitted on modern vehicles. Theentire process is now made versatile andadaptable to the workshop’s setup.

Part of Q.Lign is also the newlyreleased Q.Grip - the quickest way toattach targets to the wheel without anycontact to the rim. The smart grippingsystem allows adjustment betweendifferent wheel sizes in less than asecond. And its 3-arm design ensures asafe hold for accurate results, withoutany possible slippage or damage to therims.

Traditional wheel alignment targetsare designed to only work on specificwheels or when attached to their

assigned wheel, however the auto IDfunction eliminates these constraints byallowing the use of any target on anywheel. With a redesigned target concept, the auto ID also allows the system torecognise the saved target boards tothen pull the correct calibration data forthe measurements, reducing downtimeand the need for service visits. Andthanks to the AlignScreens, live toe andcamber results are displayed on theOLED screens while adjustment work isbeing carried out below the vehicle, increasing turnaround time and accuracytoo.“The Q.Lign from Beissbarth

represents the greatest leap forward insoftware, clamping solutions and ease ofuse in modern times. I’m delighted tointroduce the fantastic features to ourever-evolving marketplace. Nextgeneration technology available today!”says Jamie Taylor, Everard DivisionalManager and alignment expert.Designed to fit into the fast-paced

workshop environment, the Q.Lign willrevolutionise wheel alignment. For more information or a virtualdemonstration, please visit:everard.co.uk.

Tecalemit Garage Equipment recognisethat when it comes to dealing with

commercial vehicle tyres, the challenge isa whole lot bigger than passenger car.

Whilst the needs of the commercialvehicle operators often involve changingtyres at the side of the road, a significantquantity of tyres are changed incommercial vehicle workshops where thevolume throughput requires specialistequipment in order to maximise theefficiency and health and safety of theworkshop technicians.

The Sicam range of commercial vehicletyre changing equipment from TecalemitGarage Equipment is designed to makethe task both quicker and safer. With arange of five commercial vehicle tyrechanges, two wheel balancers, a tyreinflation cage and laser wheel alignmentsystem, the tasks performed by thecommercial vehicle technician can beundertaken with reduced effort andimproved safety.Commercial vehicle operators can

choose from a range of wheel rim sizecapability ranging from 14” to 60”, wheeldiameters of 1600mm to 2900mm and tyrewidths of 795mm to 1460mm. Themaximum wheel weight ranges from1500kg to 2800kg and the operator canspecify either a 4 jaw clamping system orthe Sicam patented 6 jaw system. Withsingle or dual rotation speed, Tecalemit’srange caters for the needs of allcommercial vehicle workshops. TheTCS26 is ideal for smaller workshopswhere space may be a constraint. Thelarger TCS52 unit will also handle lightagricultural vehicles. The top of the rangeTCS62 will cope with heavy agriculturaland off road vehicles. The Sicam modelsfeature the latest design universal pivotingtool with a bead breaker disc thatincreases bead breaking force up to 4.1tonnes whist protecting the tyre bead.

Wheel rim protection kits are availablefor use on alloy wheels and the adjustablehydraulic pressure settings that providefull control over the tool trolley, lifting arm

and the bi-directional chuck system. Awired mobile remote control unit furtherincrease operator safety.Once the tyre is fitted to the rim, some

thought needs to be given to inflationsafety. A burst tyre can cause significantoperator injury. The Tecalemit tyre inflationcage provides an effective solution. It canaccommodate all types of commercialvehicle wheels, but can also be used forcar and light commercial van tyres. Thetyre inflation cage features a special typeof perforated mesh enclosing structurewhich minimises the shock wave whichmight be generated due to tyre burstsituation.Operator safety can be further

improved with the optional electronicinflating system. This enables the operatorto deploy a standalone inflation process. The required inflation pressure is set, enabling the pressure gauge to control theoperation unassisted, leaving the operatorfree to carry out other tasks.Visit: www.tecalemit.co.uk

Absolute Alignment has been at theforefront of wheel alignment

technology for a decade, with constantinnovation as new car developmentscome on stream. The latest technologiesare not about reacting to vehicle changesbut promoting reliable and quick practicesin the workshop to improve accuracy. The technology starts at the door, with

the Drive Over Tyre Condition Profilersilently assessing the condition of avehicle’s tyres as the customer drives intothe workshop. By the time they get to theservice desk, a printout will show thestate of all four tyres and a skilledtechnician will be able to interpret theinformation.

Not only the state of the tyres can bestudied, but the report gives an indicationas to whether wheel alignment needs tobe checked. It’s important to note that thereport does not replace physicalinspection, but it can be used to gain thecustomer’s consent before spending theirmoney.Once on the alignment ramp, accuracy

is all-important. Instead of thumbingthrough books or scrolling through manydifferent versions of the same caronscreen, Absolute Alignment’s range ofwheel aligners can be specified with anumber plate recognition extension pack.Simply snap the registration of the carwith your tablet or smart phone, and let

our system do therest – thiseliminatesconfusion andspeeds up theprocess in one go. One of the

bottlenecks tospeedy wheelalignment is oftenthe time it takesfor the technicianto come out fromunder the vehicle

to check the figures on the central unit. This is now a thing of the past withrepeater screens available on tablets andsmart phones that operate wirelesslyfrom the base. Those workshops reallystruggling for space can use the WiFiPro, which does away with the cabinetaltogether. All reports are sent wirelesslyto the office printer and can be double-checked for accuracy by senior staffbefore handing the car and report back tothe customer.New for 2021, Absolute Alignment is

fitting a FREE remote diagnostic moduleinto every wheel aligner that it sells. If theequipment is connected to the internet,Absolute Alignment’s technicians can login and quickly fix software bugs whichmay occur, meaning less downtime andless face-to-face interaction. These are challenging times for

MOTORSPORT

As exclusive tyre supplier to thespectacular new Extreme E race

series, Continental and their CrossContacttyres support drivers through extremeacceleration, masses of torque, highspeeds even through tight corners, driftsand jumps. Continental’s CrossContactUltra High Performance SUV tyres areprobably facing the toughest challenge thatmotorsport has ever conjured up for a setof tyres. Providing the headline act inExtreme E is the ODYSSEY 21 electricSUV. From April 3rd 2021, this eye-catching machine will be takingprofessional motor racing to the remotestcorners of the globe. At 440 cm long, 230cm wide and standing 186 cm tall, it is notall that different from a conventional SUV.A 300 cm wheelbase sounds perfectlynormal too, but that’s where the similarityends. With a peak output of 550 hp, thisSpark Racing Technology-built vehicle is agenuine powerhouse – particularly as ittips the scales at just 1,650 kilograms. Byway of comparison, the average DakarRally car will deliver around 300 hp andweigh upwards of 2,000 kilograms. So, theimpressive acceleration figures shouldcome as no surprise. Powered by its twoelectric motors, the Extreme E racersprints from 0-62mph in just 4.5 seconds.Added to which, this e-SUV can take 55-degree inclines smoothly in its stride. Toput down that much power reliably onto allmanner of surfaces, in different climatezones, all the teams in the new off-roadseries are placing their trust in the

CrossContact Extreme E tyre, speciallydeveloped for these races by Extreme EFounding Partner Continental.

This competitiontyre deliversmaximum stabilityand resilience underthe very toughestconditions – likethose in the Amazonrainforest or on theglaciers ofPatagonia – andgoes beyond anypassenger tyre thatContinental hasmanufactured in thepast. It all beginswith an impressivephysical presence: On the sidewall it says37 X 12.5 R 17, which means the tyre is 37inches in diameter, 12.5 inches wide, andfor a 17-inch wheel. “The tread pattern hasbeen optimised to enable the tyre toprovide top performance on all kinds ofterrain,” explains Anuj Jain, tyredevelopment engineer with Continental.“With this tyre we arrived at a very goodcompromise – a product that takes intoaccount the various surfaces and local andclimate-related requirements, thenecessary reliability under race conditions, and the key topic of sustainability. It’s anexceptionally capable, one-size-fits-allsolution.”

Among other things, that meantdeveloping a special tread compound,

while the pattern features theideal combination of tractionribs and pockets to providemaximum grip over any terrain.“Additionally, this tyre has anall-new off-shoulder design thatforms a robust link between thetread and sidewall,” says AnujJain. “And to complete thepicture, we also reinforced thecasing.” The eye-catchingcoloured sidewall design isproduced in a furtherdeveloped post-cure process.

Given that there are nosuitable challenges for theexceptional performancedelivered by the CrossContactExtreme E tyre in everydaymotoring, Continental is rulingout any possibility of theseextreme sports products

becoming available from dealers. Butanyone hoping for future technologytransfer from track to road, will be pleased

to know that the counterpart to this racingtyre is already available. As Anuj Jainexplains: “For the development of theExtreme E tyre, we first analysed themaximum performance and resilience of anumber of our proven high-performanceproducts. before deciding to use theContinental CrossContact series as a pointof reference as we took the processforward. The challenge from a technicalangle was then to adapt the tread pattern, sidewall and construction to thechallenging demands of the very differentExtreme E locations.”

And indeed, the sporty CrossContactfamily in its various guises, for on and off-road use in summer and winter, bringstogether all Continental’s exceptionalexpertise in the SUV segment. With itsdifferent on/off-road ratios, what thevarious models all have in common is atechnical focus on superb dry and wetbraking, as well delivering outstandinghandling, even under maximum load andat extremely high speeds. CrossContacttyres are available for up to 23-inch rims, inwidths of up to 315 millimetres, andapproved for speeds of up to 186mph.

MOTORSPORT

Entries have officially opened for the2021 RallyX Nordic presented by

Cooper Tires campaign, as Finlandrejoins the schedule with a double-header weekend at OuluZone.

Despite the disruption of the globalpandemic, RallyX Nordic very muchbucked the trend in 2020 with atremendously successful season. Notonly did the series stage the first majorinternational rallycross event of the yearlast summer – Höljes’ high-profile ‘All-Star Magic Weekend’, attracting the likesof Johan Kristoffersson, NiclasGrönholm, Timmy Hansen, OliverSolberg and Thierry Neuville – but itcomprehensively shifted the goalposts interms of what the discipline can deliverfrom a broadcast perspective.

Over the course of the campaign,NEP Sweden produced more than 43hours of cutting-edge, live high-octaneaction, state-of-the-art drone footage andprivileged behind-the-scenes insights (allof which can now be viewed for freehere), taking viewers right to the veryheart of the events during a period whentrackside attendance was strictly off-limits.

In addition to keeping fans royallyentertained – with pulsating title fights inevery class rooting them to their seatsseason-long – it also ensuredcompetitors enjoyed unprecedentedlevels of exposure and their sponsorsbenefitted from unparalleled return oninvestment, at a time when value formoney was arguably more important thanever.

Far from content to rest upon theirlaurels, however, RallyX Nordicorganisers and the creative brains atNEP have spent the off-season hard atwork to ensure the broadcast package forthe forthcoming campaign raises the bareven further, with details to be revealedin due course.

With five classes on the agenda – thepre-existing Supercar, Supercar Lites,CrossCar/Crosskart and CrossCar Juniorcategories joined by Open 2WD in 2021– and interest already running at recordlevels, everything is set for anotherspectacular season of RallyX Nordiccompetition as bumper grids areanticipated across the board.

The campaign will rev into life with aDanish double-header at Nysum – scene

of last year’s title-decider – on 1-2 May,while Sweden’s iconic Höljes circuit playshost to rounds three and four a fortnightlater (13-16 May). Finland makes awelcome return to the calendar on 5-6June with the double-header contest atOuluZone in the north of the country, before Arvika in southern Sweden bringsthe curtain down on proceedings with asingle-header showdown on 13-15August.

“We are delighted to confirm Finland’sreturn,” commented Jan-Erik Steen, CEOof RallyX Nordic promoter, RXPromotion. “We have always maintaineda good relationship with the Finnish eventorganisers, and it was a shame we werenot able to go there last year due toscheduling difficulties.

“As we said at the time, it was verymuch our intention to reinstate Finland toits rightful place on the RallyX Nordiccalendar, and to have reached anagreement to race at OuluZone isfantastic news for all concerned.Together with Nysum, Höljes and Arvika,we are confident we now have all theingredients for an exciting, varied andthrillingly unpredictable season ahead.”
