Thirty years ago Porntip “Bui” Nakhirunkanok became the second Thai to be crowned Miss Universe. Today, the philanthropist and mother of five, now known as Bui Simon, gives flight to the ambitions of underprivileged children through her Angel Wings Foundation.

Philippine Tatler marks its 17th anniversary issue with three covers: the stylish confectionery queen Bonnae Gokson, heiress and beauty entrepreneur Aerin Lauder, and doting first-time parents Adrien and Isabelle Daza-Semblat.

Fashion icons and socialites Leslie Sun and Christina Lu share the cover of the Fashion Issue. The two mavens, who are also close friends, were asked to choose an outfit from their own wardrobes and have the other wear it for the cover shoot.

Having experienced the consequences of natural disasters, cover star Dee Poon is on a mission to promote sustainability. She tells of her efforts to make her family business, Esquel, eco-friendly. Architect Kengo Kuma and artist Mona Hatoum are also profiled.

The Style Issue showcases colourful characters whose lives embody that crazy rich Asian spirit, with Calista Cuaca, Dick Lee and Peggy Jeffs dissecting what fashion means to them. There’s also a roundup of the best looks from the fall/winter runways.

Bruce Nauman is one of the most famous—and often most shocking—artists of his generation. The 76-year-old American has made everything from sculptures incorporating taxidermy moulds to neon works depicting almost pornographic scenes. This show is split between the two New York institutions and covers Nauman’s entire career, which began in the 1960s. moma.org; momaps1.org

The 450th anniversary of the death of Pieter Bruegel the Elder, one of the 16th century’s greatest Netherlandish painters, takes place in 2019. Only about 40 of his complex, multilayered paintings survive. To mark the occasion, the museum is bringing panels from other collections to join the 12 it owns for a stunning overview of Bruegel’s oeuvre. khm.at

This unusual exhibition examines how artists have responded to tragedies around the world, such as the 9/11 terrorist attack in 2001, the global financial crisis of 2008, and the tsunami-triggered Fukushima nuclear disaster of 2011. Featured artists include international stars such as Gillian Wearing, Isaac Julien and Mona Hatoum, as well as prominent Japanese counterparts Yoko Ono, Tatsuo Miyajima and the Chim Pom art collective, among many others. mori.art.museum

n these days when every other international news headline seems to scream about divisive politicians of all stripes; national, regional and international conflicts; and discord among blocs that should be uniting rather than opening up

rifts, it’s helpful—if not downright healthy—to focus on what draws us together rather than what separates us. In this month’s Editor’s Note, I’d like to focus on three stories we’re featuring in Indonesia Tatler’s packed October edition that perfectly illustrate this. The first is struggle through adversity as exemplified by our cancer survivors’ stories. When you’ve lost someone close to you to this dreadful disease, as I and many of my friends have, such battles come into sharp focus, and with October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it seems fitting that we talk to Magda Hutagalung, Raline Shah, and Wanda Ponika, all of whom are survivors or whose families have battled cancer and won (“Think Pink”). Our three heroines reveal what being diagnosed with cancer meant to them and their families, and how they shaped their strategies for overcoming it—and ultimately what really sealed their fate as survivors: treating cancer like the cowardly foe it is with a positive mindset.

The second is unity through a common cause. This issue, in advance of the upcoming elections,

we talk to several prominent celebrities who have chosen to follow a nobler path—that of politics. While they may represent different parties and approaches, they all have one thing in common: a desire to serve the people and the country. We also chat with Diaz Hendropriyono, a politician who highlights the fact that it’s the younger generation who will, fittingly it seems to me, decide the fate of this great nation.

Lastly, we talk to four ambassadors about the ties that bind their nations with ours. From South Korea, Hungary, the UK, and Singapore, we delve not only into their lives as career diplomats, but also what drives them personally. It makes for fascinating reading and again highlights common causes rather than clashes and chaos. If we could all focus more on what unites us as citizens of the world rather than what divides us, global progress would advance in leaps and bounds.

What else to say about October? From fab fashion to divine dishes and a whole lot in between, I wish you a peaceful and prosperous month and, as always, happy reading!

It is love, food, and music that have made Italian the world’s fourth-most-studied language. Do you agree with this statement?

It is inevitable to agree,

but it is only part of the

story—it is necessary

to also add several

important notes to

these stereotypes. Italy

is actually the cradle of

Western civilisation. A

What is the objective of the XVIII Week of the Italian Language in the World?

It focuses on a theme

How far has the programme achieved its objectives in Indonesia? In 2013, the theme

In a bid to break a Guinness World Record, more than 65,000 people lined an 8km stretch of road from the National Monument along Jl. MH Thamrin and Jenderal Sudirman on the car-free day of August 5. At 6:46am, a siren blew following the push of a button by First Lady Iriana Joko Widodo, and the music kicked off for the crowd to poco-poco together to smash the world record.

Originating in North Sulawesi poco-poco is the country’s most popular community craze of the moment. Easily danced to the beat of cha-cha, calypso, or other 4/4 tempos, poco-poco gained popularity at the turn of the new millennium. The new century apparently intrigued people to try the dance form due to its energetic steps and movements borrowed from the military’s rhythmic gymnastics.

he long journey of the Garuda Wisnu Kencana statue to Bukit Ungasan in Bali has officially finished. After 28 years, the 121m-high masterpiece was finally complete and

officially inaugurated as the new icon of Bali. Highlighted by a grand performance of a traditional Balinese ballet entitled Swadharma Ning Pertiwi, the ceremony involved a string of dancers like I Ketut

Rina and singers such as Dira Sugandi. The choreography by Eko Supriyanto re-enacts the meeting between Lord Vishnu the Preserver and the mythical Garuda bird, signifying that the masterpiece is indeed a splendid offering for the archipelago. To Minister of Tourism Arief Yahya, Bali is more complete with Garuda Wishnu Kencana. “Now, Bali relies not only on nature- and culture-based tourism, but also tourism based on human creativity. It is a new icon for Bali and the new icon of Indonesia.”

iaz hendropriyono is well known as a young politician who is innovative, creative, and always full of optimism in his views of the future of Indonesia.

At only 39, Diaz has been appointed as the Chairman of the Indonesian Justice and Unity Party (PKPI) for the 2018 to 2024 period. “As part of the community and nation, I feel called to contribute my thoughts, struggles, and dedication to my beloved society and country,” Diaz explains to Indonesia Tatler.

Diaz, the third child of Indonesian military intelligence figure Former TNI General (Retired) A.M. Hendropriyono, is a young man who is diligent, has a love of learning, and a thirst for achievement. He shows by example how responsible he is to his family, the community, and the environment around him.

Diaz has a Master of Public Administration degree from Virginia Tech in the US and is also a doctoral candidate with a state administration major at the Virginia Tech Center for Public Administration and Policy. He has also received a number of academic awards, such as Gamma Beta Phi (2007), Phi Kappa Phi (2007), Delta Mu Delta (2002), and Dean’s List (2002).

Diaz’s beginning in politics was due to his admiration for President Joko Widodo, with whom he has been familiar since his days as mayor of Solo. Not surprisingly, in July 2012, when Jokowi was running for the DKI Jakarta Governor election, Diaz became one of his supporting volunteers.

Likewise, during the campaign period before the presidential election in 2014, Diaz founded an organisation while serving as General Chairman of Jokowi Buddy (Kawan Jokowi), which supported and helped establish Jokowi as president of the Republic of Indonesia from 2014 to 2019. Currently, as the Chairman of PKPI, Diaz, together with his party members and sympathisers, has established and supported Jokowi as president. “Therefore, it is fit to say that my commitment, direction, and political vision are always in line with and support Jokowi,” Diaz says.

For this father of three, Jokowi is an exemplary national leader. The track record, actions, capabilities, and integrity that Jokowi has shown so far have been able to create unity and bring Indonesia to a path of prosperity and justice.

According to music-mad Diaz, Jokowi is a humble figure, who is young at heart and has emotional ties with the millennial youth who are spearheading the nation’s future. This is reflected in the focus of the government’s efforts to reduce the unemployment rate and successfully increase growth and increase employment opportunities. The president is also ever-active in gathering and motivating, sharing his experience and business tips with young people, as well as small and medium enterprises and start-ups in Indonesia.

The vision of Jokowi’s leadership is in line with the current trend, which rests on the idea of creative and productive thinking and puts forward the principles of work, work, work. Diaz says that the government’s productivity can already be seen in the wider community.

Looking ForwardDiaz Hendropriyono is young, fresh, and full of optimism. His vision and thoughts focus on the importance of the role of young people for the progress of Indonesia. Novranto Huntua writes

For example, infrastructure development does not only happen in big cities in Java, but also in the rural areas of Papua. Furthermore, the determination of a one-fuel price policy in Indonesia, a decrease in cement prices in Papua, the provision of the Indonesia Smart Card (KIP) and the Indonesia Healthy Card (KIS), ease in handling land certificates, and more. The overall steps of these strategic programmes are not only able to improve the welfare of Indonesia as a whole, but also to strengthen unity and avoid the threat of national disintegration.

Speaking on the role of youth in the context of the history of Indonesia, in Diaz’s perspective the younger generation has always been a driving force and a determinant of

unity and progress of the nation. In 1908, the modern movement called Budi Utomo was pioneered by young people. Next, the 1928 Youth Pledge became a milestone in Indonesian unity, all of which culminated with the proclamation of Indonesia’s independence on August 17, 1945. There was also Indonesia’s reform movement in 1998.

“In the 2019 legislative and presidential elections, voters from the younger generation—which are estimated to be more than 50 per cent—will again play an important role as well as being the determinants of Indonesia’s progress in the future,” Diaz explains.

Therefore, Diaz hopes that the younger generation makes the right choices in voting for Indonesian leaders in the future. “Vote for leaders who are always in the same side with the people and who respect diversity, mutual respect, and tolerance, as well those able to unite the nation in the same ideals and dreams for the advancement of Indonesia,” Diaz says, closing the conversation.

Diaz hopes that the younger generation makes the right choices in voting for Indonesian leaders in the future.

t’s no easy task, but someone has to do it. Actress-turned-businesswoman Louise Hsiao deeply cares for animals. Most recently, she has become a champion for protecting stray dogs in Jakarta. Indeed, Louise

has always been fond of animals, ever since her childhood days. “I used to find strays and sneak them back home, and then I got in trouble with my parents,” Louise tells Indonesia Tatler.

At one point in her life, when she was living in the Maldives, she had many animal companions. Imagine Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in a beach setting. Louise is close to almost all types of animal: mandarin ducks, cranes, rabbits, cats—even a couple of hermit crabs. Over the course of her life, she has tried to rescue a mandarin crane, a squirrel, cats, and countless dogs. Currently, she has two dogs of her own: a Shiba and a Pomeranian.

Since March, Louise has been actively participating in rescuing and adopting dogs. The story started about two-and-a-half years ago, when she first moved to Jakarta and noticed the strays around her neighbourhood. She was curious—so she asked a neighbour about the animals. The person replied that they belonged to a man who might be a dog hunter and told Louise not to get involved.

Louise then proceeded to share her sentimental experience. Back then, she drove

out to a remote area and was shocked to find many stray dogs and cats. There, she also met Mr Suntoro, a homeless man who lived in a makeshift tent. Mr Suntoro had been living on the premises for 15 years without water and electricity. Her heart melted—this was the moment when Louise knew she had to do something. Over time, Louise gained his trust; she gave him an allowance, and cooked and brought him healthy food. This tiresome routine got to her, though—Louise failed to get enough sleep, and she eventually lost her hair and weight.

After Mr Suntoro’s approval, Louise finally found a suitable house with a spacious garden and they moved the animals first. Mr Suntoro, however, changed his mind and refused to move. It was a stressful time for Louise as she had to go back and forth between both places. When he is ready, Louise will try to move him to a better and cleaner environment.

For Louise, the biggest challenges in this venture are trust and language barriers. “It seems to me that there are a lot of people who wants to help just for the sake of their personal gain,” Louise tells us. There is also commitment issue, because the animals need long-term care, and she has to gain their trust.

“Once, I had a dog that was scared of humans and trusted no one. I tried to bathe him, but he would attempt to bite everyone,” Louise says. “Now, he is very close to me, so I changed his name from Bully to Buddy. I find joy when I spend time with my animals.

Over the course of her life, she has tried to rescue a mandarin crane, a squirrel, cats, and countless dogs.

Getting a big welcome from my fur babies puts a smile on my face. Finding a home for them is always a bittersweet feeling, though.”

To the adopter, she always states that if they cannot handle the fur babies, she would welcome them back. Once, a puppy was sent back because she was ill and needed immediate medical attention. The dog had to receive a blood transfusion and is now happy and healthy under Louise’s care.

Moreover, Louise has the utmost respect fellow animal-lover Fie Fie Jo, who has helped her through many difficult times, plus two animal-shelter owners, Mrs Ting Ping Ping, the owner of Rumah Singgah, and Mrs Ismawanty Mima, the owner of Melati. “I have tremendous respect for them. They are truly animal lovers and I admire their hard work and how they put the animals first,” Louise says.

Louise hopes that she can continue to care even more for the animals. “It is not enough to only provide food—they need to be vaccinated and neutered. They need tenderness and love. In the end, I hope I can find home for all the animals currently in my care,” Louise concludes.

ew people have the strength to power through all of life’s obstacles, let alone consistently come out on top. Yet here to claim her success is the businesswoman

who found her way into the nation’s hearts, Nurhayati Subakat. Though most know her as the founder of Wardah, Nurhayati’s Paragon Technology and Innovation group is anything but a one-hit wonder. With Make Over, Emina, and Innovative Xalon in the palm of her hands, Nurhayati’s perseverance has proved to be fruitful in the journey to building her beauty empire.

“Before I founded this company in 1985, I had just quit my previous job because it took away too much of my time with my family,” says the living legend. “As someone with a pharmaceuticals background, I suddenly realised that making make-up shouldn’t be that different from making medicine. That was when I ventured into making my own haircare line, Putri.”

Gaining its feet through direct selling in just five years, Putri found its home in salons all over Tangerang. But, of course, whatever endeavours one pursues in life, few paths are as smooth as the stories make them out to be. It was during the same year that the company finally started to relish the results of its sales

efforts that it faced its biggest obstacle yet—when its home industry caught on fire.

“I was faced with two choices: give up or persist,” she claims, revealing that she chose the latter to salvage her employees’ livelihoods. With support from family, friends, and other parties, Nurhayati rebuilt Paragon Innovation and Technology and launched the line that would propel it into the fame it claims today: Wardah. It’s no coincidence that Wardah is the leading halal make-up line in Indonesia. Since its launch in 1995, the company has mastered the art of balancing quality and economically friendly prices. “I started at a time when there were no halal beauty products,” says Nurhayati. “We couldn’t compete with existing make-up brands, so instead we took a leap into the dark and made an affordable niche line.”

Similar to Putri, Wardah’s success wasn’t earned overnight. The entrepreneur even claimed that its first launch was a total failure until it adopted multi-level marketing once again. With a sliver of hope coming its way, everything started to work out. Then when Indonesia faced the unemployment crisis of 1998, people turned to Paragon Innovation and Technology for a job, which, in turn, further expanded the company.

With a flock of young people and fresh graduates arming its home industry, Paragon Innovation and Technology has a stream of

creativity that knows no limits. After Wardah was relaunched to cater to a new generation in 2009, trepidation turned into pride as the brand received great feedback among the ever-growing hijaber market.

“Since then, our company achieved 200 per cent growth and for nine years and counting, it continues to amaze us. This gave us the confidence to diversify our brands, which led to the launch of Make Over in 2010 and Emina in 2015,” says Nurhayati.

What lies beyond this beauty empire is a warm community that celebrates five core principles: divinity, exemplars, responsibility, attentiveness to customers, and innovation. This charming leader knows that for the team to build great synergy, she has to be a great role model—and that, she is.

With more than 10,000 employees, one would expect Paragon Innovation and Technology to be just another big corporation. Yet holding those under her wings at close proximity, Nurhayati doesn’t neglect the needs and wants of her staff. Not only does the company give scholarships to factory employees, it also provides dormitories and funds employees’ Umroh trips. With such an attentive and positive working environment, what more could one ask of a leader?Read more on www.IndonesiaTatler.com.

“I am excited about this coming month,” she tells us. “Alleira will be celebrating Batik Day on October 2, its 13th anniversary on October 6, as well as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We have so many projects and collaborations going on.”

Alleira is collaborating with Yayasan Kanker Payudara Indonesia (YKPI) in creating a limited-edition batik scarf and special pink-ribbon packaging for GAIA Tea and Cakes, and up to 15 per cent of the sales will be donated to YKPI. “I have the utmost respect for Mrs Linda Gumelar and all the other breast cancer survivors out there,” Lisa adds.

Meanwhile, along with YKPI and Rumah Pesona Kain, Alleira is planning to host a show on October 25 with a concept similar to the “Batik for the World” exhibition held at the UNESCO HQ in Paris last June.

And speaking of the City of Lights, Alleira also participated in Paris Fashion Week 2018 on March 3. Its collection was worn by Madeline Stuart, a

professional model with Down syndrome who hails from Australia—and Alleira hopes to collaborate again with her. “Madeline is a very nice and confident girl. I am proud of her,” Lisa says. Furthermore, to honour World Down Syndrome Day on March 21, Alleira invited three adorable kids with Down syndrome to strut their stuff during the Alleira spring/summer 2018 “Amorous” show at Plaza Indonesia Fashion Week 2018.

In addition, this year, to commemorate National Children’s Day on July 23 and to celebrate Accor Indonesia’s 25th anniversary, Alleira collaborated with Yayasan Daya Pelita Kasih in the “25 Magic Painting Exhibition” featuring 12 talented children with autism at the Pullman Jakarta Indonesia hotel. At the opening ceremony, the incredible children all sported Alleira.

Further back in 2014, to commemorate World Autism Awareness Day on April 2 at Fashion Nation Senayan City, Alleira collaborated with Yayasan Masyarakat Peduli Autis Indonesia (MPATI) in which nine children with autism showcased the Alleira Kids collection. In addition, for the past 10 years, Alleira has been contributing 10 per cent of the profits from Alleira Kids

to Yayasan Pembinaan Anak Cacat (YPAC) Jakarta. “These disabled and special-needs children are remarkable. They really amaze me,” Lisa says enthusiastically.

Other collaborators on similar programmes include the Tunggadewi Foundation and the Mien Rachman Uno Foundation.

The bright businesswoman is indeed passionate about her philanthropic ventures. “Through Alleira, I want to take batik to the next level, but my mission goes beyond that. I want to give back to society,” Lisa continues. “I support these foundations continuously because this is what I want. My intention is sincere and I do it wholeheartedly.”

Lisa also teaches her own three children—Tiffany, Carys, and Edwyn—about humanitarianism. Every year, on their birthdays, Lisa would take the children to visit orphanages, nursing homes, refugee camps, disabled children’s homes, and even to underprivileged areas such as slums, landfills, and railway tracks. “I feel so blessed,” she reveals. “If we are healthy, we need to help those who are less fortunate. She has also collaborated with local cosmetics brand Mineral Botanica in creating a special batik motif packaging for the lipsticks. “I am not a fan of make-up, but when I see Mineral Botanica, I know this brand is set to be great. It uses halal and natural ingredients, delivering high-quality, premium products at reasonable prices,” she says.

Design-wise, Alleira, which is known for its signature colour gradation motif and hand-painting techniques, is going to release “Merak Ngibing”, or the dancing peacock motif, a motif from Priangan in West Java. “Our design is original and we have special in-house artisans,” Lisa explains,“Furthermore, each original piece of Alleirais embedded with our logo, the unique kawung or four-leaf clover on its fabric.”

The occasion took place in the evening at the stunning Cliff Lawn, a spacious open-air area on the cliff in front of the ballroom, perched high above the resort with bird’s eye views of the sparkling Indian Ocean far below. A soft velvety lawn fringed by exquisite landscaped gardens meant for the most magical of settings. As the pair made a wonderful entrance through a fresh flower walkway, Franky looked dashing in a white tuxedo suit with black contrasting lapels and black trousers, while Michele, carrying a customised fragrant bouquet, opted for a classic white Mandarin-collar gown with V neckline. Festive fireworks ended the intimate party.

The Bold and the BeautifulThe Macallan presents the best of its whiskies matured in

first-fill sherry-seasoned casks

ou are heading to one of Jakarta’s finest restaurants for an incredible meal. There will be fine cuts of meat, fresh seafood, and fantastic company.

Your attire is sharp, and your shoes are on point. There is only one crucial ingredient to make this dinner a truly unforgettable one: whisky.

You will want a premium single malt whisky from a distiller with a storied legacy and an obsessive level of mastery that ranges from the barrels to the decanters and finally the glass in your hand. Leaning back on the large leather chair, the choice becomes quite clear: The Macallan.

The Macallan 1824 Masters Series is a collection created to showcase the magnificent range of natural colours that The Macallan’s whiskies come in. Each colour becomes increasingly darker and more complex as one goes through the range. The Macallan Reflexion represents the foremost influence of the first-fill sherry-seasoned oak casks.

The design of The Macallan Reflexion’s decanter is inspired by the iconic triangle of The Macallan. Its exquisite angular facets each reflect light to showcase the deep red mahogany hue of the whisky within.

The Macallan Reflexion’s striking colour and flavours are drawn from the maturation in 250l hogshead casks. The spirit is matured

predominately in the smaller Spanish and American hogshead casks. It is then allowed a greater surface area of wood to interact with in order to deliver more accentuated aromas and flavours. The result is a whisky that is bold and full bodied, with floral and vanilla notes, punctuated with fresh apples and apricots.

The aroma of The Macallan Reflexion begins with whiffs of orange and citrus fruits opening up on sunny day, their zest fresh and the fruit firm. A slight waxy note then fades to fresh green apples. The sweet stall brings about fragrances of chocolate, thick fudge, boiled sweets, aniseed, and caramel toffees. Hidden beneath all that one finds white chocolate truffles. Just as you are ready to taste, a delivery of fresh bananas and sweet oak arrives.

The initial light citrus zest with new oak quickly gives way to a juicier sweetness, thick and succulent, brought about by lemon and orange. Subtle notes of raisin, sultana, and apple—with a hint of cinnamon and ginger—are next to arrive. Boiled sweets balance the combination to give a glimpse of toasted oak, ending in a medium and soft finish.

Stuart MacPherson, The Macallan’s Master of Wood, emphasises the vital role of the casks in the production of these superb whiskies: “Our commitment to sherry-seasoned oak casks is unquestionable and the Masters Series showcases The Macallan at its very best.”

ver wondered how your favourite online influencers and beauty gurus get their make-up so on point? Ever envied your celebrity idols with their impeccably perfect

make-up? It is time to step up your game with this revolutionary device: the FLRMIST (Flair Mist) Make Up Airbrush. And the best part is: you can do it all within the comfort of your own home. Launched in 2017 as Flair, this year, the brand is making a mark in the industry as FLRMIST.

Founded in 2014 by professional make-up artist Nadia Sadeli, FLRMIST is here to change your make-up routine in the best way possible. Nadia’s immense talent revolves around the use of an airbrush to apply the make-up. Her years of experience have given her knowledge

about the inner workings of an airbrush, and how to best adapt it for use with the traditional make-up you may have at home.

Understanding that each consumer is unique and will want a range of different looks, Nadia knew from the beginning that the airbrush was going to have to be versatile. In addition, it would have to be able to work with traditional make-up and act as a complement rather than a replacement.

The result is a light, innovative airbrush and compressor set that would look at home next to any make-up kit. The various settings of the compressor are adjusted using a simple rotary dial. The compressor is able to provide pressure of 7 psi to 21 psi, covering a range of desired outcomes. Coming it at only half a kilogramme, along with its quiet and vibration-free operation, the FLRMIST airbrush also offers great portability.

The FLRMIST airbrush is the perfect unison of technology and cosmetics, giving users the best of both worlds. In addition to being revolutionary, the FLRMIST airbrush is also very user-friendly. Transitioning to airbrush make-up will be a breeze, even for those with minimal experience.

“Once you start airbrushing, it’s hard to go back 100 per cent to traditional make-up. When you want your look to be perfect from every angle, airbrush is the way to go,” explained Nadia. “By combining these two systems, I can achieve a soft flawless look, effortlessly. They truly complement each other.”

In her constant pursuit of cosmetic excellence, Nadia has also come up with a range of specialist products that work best with an airbrush. From primers to foundation, powders and effects palettes to lip gloss, the FLRMIST (Flair Mist) collection has it all.

he definition of Saint Laurent? Parisian elegance with a new-age rock-and-roll edge. Iconic leather accessories are tweaked and reworked to fit the brand’s image. For fall/

winter 2018, Saint Laurent offers a range of eye-catching accessories for both men and women. Women’s bags take a playful turn in their shapes, while the men’s range comes in a classic reinvention of the oversized Sac de Jour shape and goes sporty for gym bags and shoes.

The main highlight is the Pyramid Box bag—a new, one-of-a-kind minaudière recognisable by its original and pyramidal shape. Ultra-fashionable and playful, it comes in three different colours: black, red, and yellow. This unique purse is made for the woman who is looking for a statement look that is perfect for cocktail events and special occasions. The material is lambskin leather with signature YSL engraving, magnetic closure, a hand strap, and three brass bottom feet. The bag has a single compartment, with an easy one-tap discrete opening.

For daily wear, you could carry the Betty satchel bag. Crafted in Italy, the Betty logo-engraved satchel bag, available in black, red, and mocha leather features an adjustable shoulder strap, a fold-over top with a push-lock closure, gold-tone hardware, and an internal slip pocket. For a little more indulgence in the evening, wear the latest Cassandra chain bag, which features an envelope-shaped flap, with the flap edges highlighted in a stitched V line. The overall appearance is timeless and classic due to the iconic YSL logo crafted just below the flap.

Meanwhile, men can opt for a classic Duffle 72h Sac de Jour, supple in black shiny grained leather, or go bright in a Gym Bag City in black glitter and black leather. For men’s sneakers, it’s all about colour blocks: Jay Runner in white and red leather and gold Saint Laurent and hot-stamp stars—also available in black, green, blue, and red. Feeling old school? The Bedford Patch mid-top sneaker in multicolour glitter and white leather may very well be just right for you.

Hermès’ iconic Chaine d’Ancre takes a new and eclectic turn

style | spotlight

Lavishly Punk Pierre Hardy begs to differ. Eclectic, fresh, and rather unconventional, the safety pins used in the Chaine d’Ancre Punk embody the rebellious youthful spirit that defined the 70s.

Decades of mastery have led the legendary fashion house to design its punk-themed line in the most sophisticated of ways. With the way the white gold and rose gold have been moulded into nimble strands, such as the rose-gold teardrop-like earrings, the safety pin has certainly been elevated into a luxury symbol. Perhaps the most discreet yet intricate piece is the Chaine d’Ancre Punk’s bangle and the way its thinnest end is tucked under the diamond-embedded centrepiece, like secured safety pins. But the belle of the ball is certainly the radiating rose gold fringe necklace with more than 1,500 diamonds intricately woven to sit on one’s décolletage.

Fit for both the bold and the refined Hermès darlings, the Chaine d’Ancre Punk effortlessly amps up any look. With the launch of this eclectic masterpiece, Pierre Hardy is bringing a breath of fresh air to the already legendary fashion house.

plendidly svelte and supremely sophisticated, Hermès’ latest collection of Chaine d’Ancre truly embodies the fashion house’s persona. Since its birth in 1938, the line

has continued to evolve and has become an object of adoration for fashion enthusiasts all over the globe. Only upon further inspection will one notice that this time, the legendary fashion house has adopted a freshly punk concept by adding a unique twist to the otherwise elegant jewellery items.

One would never have thought that the words “punk” and “Hermès” would fit together in the same sentence, but Creative Director

Taking The Lead

Working to build a joint legacy, the watch master set to work and unveiled the limited-edition Excalibur Aventador S and its five patents in June in Japan. Intrigued by Japan’s oxymoronic culture of upholding age-old traditions while still being a prime producer of cutting-edge discoveries, Roger Dubuis marked these limited-edition watches with calligraphic Japanese symbols of its elemental namesake on the calibre’s hexagonal carbon plate.

Fitted with double sprung balances with differentials, Roger Dubuis’ Excalibur Aventador S watch is a riveting masterpiece with a 40-hour power reserve. Encased in a 45mm C-SMC carbon case, this time embellished with abstract patterns, is a sublime skeleton that comprises a shot-blasted and circular grained plate and bridges topped with 48 standout jewels. Mimicking the Lamborghini Squadra Corse’s upholstery, Roger Dubuis’ latest inventions are held together by Nero Ade black leather and black Nero Cosmus Alcantara. To finish it off, the “Y” symbol for bamboo in Japanese marks its presence on the straps, leaving a trail of fused cultures bound to intrigue and entice.

Without a doubt, the limited-edition Excalibur Aventador S is an amalgamation of the Lamborghini Squadra Corse and Japan’s phenomenal culture. To both motorsport enthusiasts and watch enthusiasts, riveting Roger Dubuis again takes the lead in the world of haute horlogerie.

giant stride and an equalisation later, and off the divemaster goes under the turquoise tide to explore the marine kingdom. From the descent to the ascent and in between the picturesque

diving spots, be it Phuket, Thailand, or Valparaíso, Chile, knowing the time spent and the amount of oxygen left are just a few crucial pieces of information that a watch can keep track of. Taking into account the extreme and tough conditions that experienced divers have to endure, TAG Heuer answers them all

with the Aquaracer collection as it pushes the boundary to enable diving to depths of 300 metres.

Each watch is equipped with six defining diving features, starting with water resistance and a screw-in crown that works together to keep the watch dry even at the high pressures found in deeper waters—plus the double-safety clasp guarantees that no watch will come loose. Then there is the unidirectional rotating bezel to measure time spent admiring oceanic biota, which is equipped with six studs all around for a good grip underwater with gloved hands. Reading the time is made even easier with the hands and indices covered in glow-in-the-dark SuperLuminova material.

in 43mm, or 35mm for the ladies. While the 43mm version uses anodised aluminium in red, black, or blue for the bezel, the 35mm piece is made both from blue or black ceramic and also silver steel. To protect the quartz heart within, both cases are made from steel with scratch-resistant and anti-reflective sapphire crystal on the front, a screwed-down caseback behind, and polished-steel crown on the side.

Especially for the Aquaracer Lady, TAG Heuer created another version with an Automatic Calibre 9 beating inside a 32mm steel casing, and the steel unidirectional rotating bezel comes with a 60-minute scale. Both have variations on which diamonds dot the indices, but the Automatic takes it further by setting the gems against a black or white and striated mother-of-pearl dial. Moreover, the date function gets a magnifier for optimum

visibility and legibility, a small difference to the same function on the Aquaracer Lady and the 300M, and the second hand is an arrow.

Where these three watches sit on the classic side of TAG Heuer’s Aquaracer collection, the youngest addition, Carbon Aquaracer, rests more on the modern edge. The 41mm case made from black PVD-coated titanium makes for a light yet durable and scratch-resistant watch coupled with a caseback made from the same grade-five titanium and the sapphire crystal. Either one of these handsome hints extends to the faceted indices and central hand, plus hour and minute hands polished in rose gold, or plated with black gold, and are all coated with grey SuperLuminova, which makes them glow bright in the darkness of an underwater

cave. The Carbon also possess a carbon-based unidirectional rotating bezel just like the Aquaracer Lady and its Calibre 9 Automatic, and the Aquaracer 300M, which makes the whole Aquaracer collection stand true to TAG Heuer’s diving codes and excellent craftsmanship—first envisioned by Edouard Heuer and the patented water-resistant cases for pocket watches in 1895.

Coming of AgeOver his three decades as a wine critic, James Suckling has encountered a number of talented winemakers driving the industry forward. Their innovative experimentation

includes trying new ways to age wines, from keeping them in obscure locations, such as mountain mines and underwater, to playing music in cellars. Try these 10 unique

wines to experience how innovations have enhanced the ageing process

Niepoort porto VV Very old tawNy port The base for this blend is a very fine port from 1863, of the highest quality, aged in casks until 1972 and then “bottled” in demijohns. A tawny port with coffee, nuts, chocolate, sultana, toffee and dried lemon rind. Full, very sweet and intense, with so much flavour and depth. Goes on for minutes. Bottled in November 2012. An exceptionally rare edition of this 155-year-old vintage port sealed in a signed 1863 Lalique decanter will be auctioned in Hong Kong on November 3. 100 points

SeppeltSfield BaroSSa 100 year old para tawNy A blend of 12 vintages spanning 1886 to 1970, this one-off blend with an average age of 100 years has

been released as a special bottling in 150 crystal decanters crafted by Lalique. The complexity is indescribable and almost incomprehensible. Roasted nuts and very sweet, caramelised, rancio character. Concentrated, raisined fruit. Molasses, sweet old wood, polished leather and a wealth of sweet spices. The palate has deep-reaching, essence-like dried plum, raisin, saffron and a wealth of dark chocolate, then toasted nuts, burnt orange, dark

woody notes and concentrated fruit. But the texture is the thing:

It sits with purposeful weight and really possesses the

palate in a way that no other wine does. Muscular, expansive espresso finish that lingers fresh and

captivating. Drink now. 100 points

aloiS lageder ChardoNNay alto adige löweNgaNg 30 NV This Italian estate plays music in the cellar during the ageing process. The music is connected to a windmill, which allows nature to decide when the music is played. The nose oozes elegance and panache. Aromas of dried citrus rind, chalk, light stone fruit, clove and spices, vanilla, cream and guava peel. Full body, driving, vibrant acidity, layer upon layer of fruit and an expansive, phenolic and long finish. A blend of 2013, ’14, ’15 Löwengang chardonnay with limited bâtonnage in the first six months. Bottled in May 2017 and released in September 2017. Drink now.

98 points

Château poNtet-CaNet pauillaC 2015 This Bordeaux estate ages its wines in egg-shaped concrete vessels made with soil from its vineyards. So much floral and dark-fruit character to this wine, with almond and walnut shell. Full body and ultra-fine tannins. Powerful. Classic style with harmony and energy. Goes on for minutes. A superb wine with great fruit. Try in 2025. 98 points

CaNtiNa terlaNo alto adige terlaNer rarity 1991After fermentation and 10 months on the full lees, the wine was left to mature on the fine lees in a 2,500-litre stainless steel vat for another 24 years. How can this wine be more than 25 years old when it is still so vital and even a little closed? The complex aromas of dried flowers and herbs are like no other dry white, the palate is super linear with the kind of energy you expect from young wines, and the finish is salty-mineral and very long. Great ageing potential and needs at least a couple of years in the bottle to give its best. 96 points

forjáS del SalNeS ríaS BaixaS SketCh 2011 Spain’s Raúl Pérez is one of the first winemakers to experiment with underwater cellars to age wines. These rare bottles of albariño are grown in Rías Baixas vineyards of Galicia 150 metres from the ocean where they were aged for four years. A weird and wonderful wine. Gold colour with aromas of dried apple, honey and hints of pie crust. Full body, candied fruit and lemon peel. Cooked apple sweets and a fresh finish. Only 300 bottles made. 93 points

CaNtiNa tramiN gewürztramiNer alto adige epokale 2009 A rare Italian white made from 100% gewürztraminer that has been aged for seven years in bottle in a mountain mine 2,000 metres above sea level. Dense and powerful, with dried apple, apricot and pineapple character, and an oily texture underneath the layer of bright acidity and ripe fruit. Full-bodied, medium-sweet, and layered, with so much going on. Very spicy, with lemon peel and dried fruit on the finish. Drink now.

VeuVe CliCquot poNSardiN ChampagNe Brut Carte jauNe NV A diving team discovered 47 bottles of Veuve Clicquot Champagne in 2010 in a shipwreck near Finland’s Åland archipelago. The producer was impressed with the wine and created its own cellar in the sea for ageing. One of the most appealing all-rounders in the NV stakes, this one has plenty of toasty warmth on the nose, with grilled berries and peach, as well as citrus and gentle woody spices. The palate delivers bold citrus flavours with light berry notes to finish. Drink now.

92 points

aNdreaS SChmitgeS rieSliNg moSel prälat troCkeN 2016 A long-time German producer famed for its rieslings, Andreas Schmitges ages its whites in lagars, where the grapes are crushed. This one is still a bit closed, but there’s very attractive nectarine fruit on the palate, where the wine has some real depth and great harmony. Drink any time until 2025. 92 points

BalthaSar reSS rieSliNg rheiNgau hallgarteN 2015 This German producer not only grows its vines by the Rhine, it also ages them in the river. The aromas of white fruit (mostly nutty apple and Asian pear) are intense and subtle. On the palate it’s got the classic Rheingau balance of crisp acidity, fruit and herbal flavours. Better still, the long finish is silky for this moderately priced category, and although labelled “feinharb” (medium-dry), it’s dry. 91 points

Yet in busy Kemang Village is exactly that: a brightly lit semi-outdoor eatery that serves as a much-needed escape from the hustle bustle of the city—Lurik Coffee & Kitchen.

It is in Lurik Coffee & Kitchen that we find owners Ussy Suilstiawaty and Andhika Pratama showing their delectable delights. Taking inspiration from Indonesia’s lurik fabric, the couple’s vision of their establishment is to create a melting pot between the traditional and the contemporary. “We wanted to put a modern twist to both the place and the dishes, while still maintaining that traditional Indonesian nuance,” says Ussy, pointing at the lurik accents and rattan chairs in the otherwise modern eatery.

who confessed he had set his sights on her for quite some time: “It took a while for me to muster up the courage to ask her out, but when I did, things just fell into place,” says the dapper romantic. Fast forward to 2012 and the couple got married and started a family of their own.

In addition to building a family, Ussy and Andhika have been building business upon business together. Not only do they head up Lurik Coffee & Kitchen, the lovebirds have also founded several food brands, a make-up brand, and even a real estate company. When asked whether separating work and personal life is hard, they said that, on the contrary, it comes rather naturally. “The most challenging part is actually to find quality time together as a family,” says Ussy, referring to Andhika’s hectic schedule as an actor and presenter. But be that as it may, the two were all giggles in between takes, proving that romance doesn’t fade with time.

Whether the chef caught on that love was in the air or not, the sweetness the couple shares has undoubtedly been translated in the form of their delicacies, one being Lurik Coffee & Kitchen’s Sate Maranggi. As

a side dish, these grilled beef skewers offer a succulent bite-sized heaven served with a side of chili and soy sauce. To balance the sweet aftertaste, the restaurant offers a wide range of coffees, even those fit for coffee connoisseurs. While it has stayed true to its name with its coffee selection, the restaurant’s trademark drinks are actually the refreshing fruit-based Es Mumuw and Es Pupuw, the names of which have histories of their own. With such intricate details and a story with every dish, Lurik Coffee & Kitchen is truly Ussy and Andhika’s labour of love.

offee has become a hugepart of our lives and many of us drink it multiple times daily. While it is not difficult to get coffee—with new coffee stalls seemingly popping up

every day—finding good coffee is no mean feat. With hectic and busy schedules, sometimes all we have time for is a cup of bland instant coffee. Lucky for us, one company is set to revolutionise the world of instant coffee.

Luwak Coffee Global Indonesia, part of Luwak Coffee Global, is going to change the game with its brand of instant civet coffee, popularly known as kopi luwak: the world’s most expensive coffee. The brand combines the strengths and characteristics of traditional Asian white coffee with those of Western specialist coffees.

A common perception of instant mixes is that they can never be as good as a properly brewed cup of ground beans. Luwak Coffee Global promises to elevate instant coffee to new levels while preserving its convenience and versatility. The founders of the company have long appreciated the white coffee culture of Southeast Asia. When one of them moved to Australia, she was then completely enthralled by the intense passion of country’s modern specialist coffees. The advanced techniques in creating the coffee were also entirely different from what she had seen back home.

It was the two radically different coffee cultures that inspired the founders to look for a way to bring together the best of both worlds. With an Indonesian partner who owns a coffee plantation, it was only a matter of time before they had their breakthrough.

Interestingly enough, the plantation was also home to civets. One day, the founders realised that they could greatly enhance traditional white coffee by incorporating civet coffee. The civet coffee would bring new aroma, flavor, and complexity. The rest, as they say, is history.

The first-ever civet coffee instant blend was

indulgent with an alluring aroma. The flavour was intense and complex, but with a smooth consistency. A large contributing factor is the amount of care and attention taken to cultivate the coffee. The civets are well taken care of, while the plantation is managed using traditional methods. The brand also does not use any artificial preservatives or additives so as to preserve the original aroma and taste of the coffee.

Today, Luwak Coffee Global offers a range of instant coffees: non-sweet, mixed nuts, and original. The non-sweet variety is great for those looking for a healthier alternative. Colostrum and skimmed milk take the place of sugar. This blend offers a rich aroma with subtle hints of cocoa and a creamy feel. The original blend is full-bodied yet gentle on the palate, balancing the bitterness of the coffee with sweet caramel notes from cane sugar. The brand also offers an assorted box of all flavours for those looking to experience the whole range.

Whether it is to kick off your day or for a mid-afternoon pick-me-up, and whether you like your coffee hot or iced, Luwak Coffee Global has something for everyone. Great-tasting fresh coffee any time, any place? There are now no more reasons to suffer a bad cup of coffee.

spent 10 years of my life by the sides of my brother and husband who were diagnosed with lymphatic cancer and nasopharyngeal cancer,” says Wanda Ponika, owner of Wanda House of Jewels. Wanda was determined that both her brother and husband would emerge from their struggles gracefully.

“I never treated them as though they were cancer patients. We all went about our daily activities as much as we could and with enough determination to allow us to get through this period together,” she says. Wanda also believes that one’s spirit and positivity, along with the support of family and friends, are what lead to the road to recovery.

With career-oriented women leading busier and busier lives juggling work and families, many tend to neglect the importance of conducting annual mammograms. Wanda believes that women must make more of an effort on a yearly basis to prevent or detect early symptoms of breast cancer.

“A mammogram takes up only one hour of our lives in one year and the results can be life-saving,” she says. In Indonesia, Yayasan Kanker Payudara Indonesia conducts free mammograms for underprivileged women across the country. Wanda believes that breast cancer, indeed any type of cancer, is curable as long as one’s mindset leads in that direction.

Magda Hutagalung, meanwhile, is the embodiment of a breast cancer survivor who had nothing but one goal in her mind: God will heal me. Last year, Magda was diagnosed

with aggressive stage one breast cancer. However, six chemotherapy sessions, one operation, and 28 radiotherapy sessions later, she is now in remission and has never looked and felt better.

“Other than treating myself medically, I was positive that I would be healed and knew God would use me as an example to show his greatness,” shares Magda. The unending support and love she received from her family and close friends also made an impact in the process of her recovery and helped her heal more quickly than expected.

“To all women out there: have your mammograms and ultrasounds at least once a year, develop healthy lifestyles, and, most importantly, be happy!”

A close friend of Magda’s, Raline Shah, is also a breast cancer supporter who has had family members and close friends battle the disease. She echoes what Magda says in believing that a healthy lifestyle, spiritual connections, and undergoing annual mammograms are the ways to prevent or detect the initial stages of the disease.

“There are some known facts about our lifestyles that directly correlate with breast cancer,” says Raline. “Studies show clear connections between alcohol consumption and breast cancer, so a suggestion would be for all women to limit their intake.

Knowing one’s family history of breast and ovarian cancer also aid the process of awareness and detection. A diet filled with fruits and vegetables helps increase levels of antioxidants, which decrease the risk of cancer, she adds. After all, at the end of the day, we are what we eat. Raline also

However, a positive outlook and faith also play a big role in getting through the battle. “Having faith that everything—good and bad—is permissible by the Creator himself makes us better human beings.”

Her international efforts include supporting The Pink Agenda, a non-profit organisation committed to raising funds for breast cancer and which is a branch of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation in New York founded by her close Nicole, whose mother, Rosemary Seagriff is a survivor.

“What I’ve learned from being a part of such life-changing organisations and having to see dear people of mine go through such tough times is that there is always a silver lining, or, in this case, a pink lining!” she concludes.

HE JUDIT PACH Ambassador of Hungary to Indonesia

indonesia tatler . october 2018 1 37

In which areas are Hungary and Indonesia focusing their ongoing and upcoming bilateral programmes? HE Judit Pach: Hungary and Indonesia first established their diplomatic relations in 1955, and we have had an excellent relationship ever since. Our bilateral relationship is marked by high-level visits, such as Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s official visit to Indonesia in 2016, and constant interactions at the ministerial level.

In terms of economic cooperation, we share the same vision to develop bilateral trade and investments that have made some remarkable progress in the past few years—several Hungarian flagship projects in water management and IT are just a few rapidly developing business relationships, among many other fields. We also pay special attention to higher education, with Hungary offering 50 scholarships to Indonesian students every year, and there are Hungarians studying in Indonesia, too. Ahead, I hope that our bilateral relations get even better based on a solid common commitment of mutual trust and mutual interest.

In your opinion, what can Indonesia learn from your country and vice versa? JP: Most Europeans who come to Indonesia have a hard time coping with the cultural differences, but I don’t think that you should change in any way. This is how Indonesia is and this is how we love it. However, I think we could learn some patience and cheerfulness from you.

What are the things to do and places to visit in Hungary?JP: As the Ambassador of Hungary, I obviously speak for my country, but I can tell you why Hungary is one of the best destinations nowadays: it’s beautiful, it’s rich in culture, and it’s affordable. The main attraction is our capital, Budapest, with its marvelous architectural landmarks, urban atmosphere, and vibrant nightlife, but the countryside is also filled with natural beauty and cultural heritage.

Deliciously spicy Hungarian foods and excellent Hungarian wines always make our guests happy. Meanwhile, our thermal baths are some of the world’s finest and we have Central Europe’s largest lake, Balaton, all supported by world-class tourism infrastructure and Hungarian hospitality. The culture is rich and steeped in tradition, folk arts, and age-old crafts that are still produced to this day—the many thousands of Indonesians who visit Hungary every year would surely agree with me.

What do you like about staying in Indonesia? JP: Since my very first day in Indonesia, I have been impressed by the friendliness and politeness of Indonesians. I also like the diversity of Indonesian culture and admire the deep cultural roots of my Indonesian friends. The food is just as diverse as the culture, and some of the local dishes, like tempe or gado-gado, are my favourites and perfectly complement my vegan diet. I come from a Central European country, so I enjoy the pleasant climate, the endless sunshine, and the beautiful natural environment.

What do you do during your spare time?JP: Although a lifetime doesn’t seem to be enough, I try to explore Indonesia as much as I can, especially the more remote areas. I love to escape from the city and travel around the country where I can see the wonderful and untouched nature of Indonesia. Besides that, reading is another hobby of mine, and my daily yoga helps me to stay balanced.

HE TAN HUNG SENG Permanent Representative of the Republic of Singapore to ASEAN

Within ASEAN, where are the focus areas today and in the future? HE Tan Hung Seng: ASEAN has thrived in its 50th year with 10 member states maintaining a pivotal role in regional peace and security by promoting the 4 “Cs”: cohesion, credibility, centrality, and connectivity. As ASEAN chairman for 2018, Singapore chose resilience and innovation as the themes to anchor our term. The point is to future-proof ASEAN to face the changes brought on by an ever-evolving geo-strategic environment. In terms of resilience, Singapore is promoting greater cooperation among members to tackle threats such as terrorism, cyber-threats, and natural disasters. By focusing on innovation, my country hopes to catalyse ASEAN to strategically respond to the digital revolution.

In your opinion, what can Indonesia and other ASEAN countries learn from each other? THS: Since ASEAN’s inception in 1967, Indonesia has and will continue to play an important role as the largest economy within the region with more than a third of its population. Moreover, ASEAN has succeeded because all 10 member states recognise that we are better off together. As a highly diverse group, collaboration does not come easily or naturally to ASEAN, which is why various meetings each year enable members to understand each other better and to develop a culture of cooperation.

The ASEAN Smart Cities Network (ASCN) of 26 pioneer cities is a good example of how each member can bring its own experiences, expertise, and value to link up with each other. Indonesia, with its four of the region’s seven unicorns, has excelled and will be helpful to other states in terms of technopreneurship. Singapore’s Finance Minister Heng Swee Keat once aptly likened the region to a hawker centre where stall owners cooperate and compete, yet each offers something special that makes the whole place a lot more attractive.

What are the things to do and places to visit in Singapore? THS: For Indonesians, Singapore offers a unique proposition as a destination of familiarity and comfort that is less than one-and-a-half hours away. It also provides the conveniences of a small city-state with compact and diverse offerings that we work hard on reinventing and developing for you to have novelty with each visit. As the ASEAN chair, Singapore will host this year’s edition of the Best of ASEAN Performing Arts in November to showcase the region’s music talents. Then there’s the seventh Singapore Art Week in January 2019, a nine-day celebration of the visual arts that will take place across Singapore’s art spaces.

What do you like about staying in Indonesia and what will you miss about it now that you are about to move post?THS: My family and I have thoroughly enjoyed our five years of living in Jakarta because of its vibrancy and excitement. We have also enjoyed Bali and Toraja, Borobodur and Prambanan, and the Komodo Island and Bunaken. I will also miss the excellent golfing experience in Jakarta because the mild weather and beautiful golf courses in Sentul and Bogor are easily accessible. Last but not least, we will always remember the warmth and good humour of Indonesians who make us feel welcome wherever we go.

What do you do during your spare time?THS: I am interested in Southeast Asian art, and Jakarta has many galleries, auction houses, and private collections that give me the chance to expand my horizons and enrich my grasp of the Indonesian arts. I swim regularly and spend time with my family, especially my two daughters who are growing up too quickly.

HE KIM CHANG-BEOM Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Indonesia

indonesia tatler . october 2018 141

In which areas are the Republic of Korea and Indonesia focusing their ongoing and upcoming bilateral programmes?HE Kim Chang-Beom: There are so many ongoing activities and plans at the moment to expand bilateral cooperation between Korea and Indonesia because we are not just ordinary partners but “Special Strategic Partners”, which means our relations cover a broad range of cooperation from politics to security, economic factors, and many others.

I just came here in February, and already met with several ministers to discuss economic and trade cooperation, with the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce (KADIN) leaders, with representatives of South Korean and Indonesian companies, and with Korean scholars keen on strengthening ties with Indonesian academia. The highlight was President Joko Widodo and First Lady Iriana’s state visit to Seoul, Korea, this September. President Jokowi were warmly welcomed with a variety of substantial bilateral projects agreed by the two governments, including infrastructure, health and lifestyle sectors, and digital economy.

In your opinion, what can Indonesia learn from South Korea and vice versa?KC-B: We have enjoyed strong diplomatic relations since 1963 based on mutual trust and shared values, and similar histories of pursuing economic growth and maturing democracy. Both our peoples have made remarkable progresses in all these areas over the years. So, the question should be: what could we do together?

We can be partners and friends in bringing steady prosperity for our people. In November 2017, during the summit between President Jokowi and President Moon Jae-In, we agreed to expand trade and to promote people-centred economies and inclusive growth. Many common elements in our respective foreign policies also point to a brighter future in our partnership.

What are the things to do and places to visit in South Korea?KC-B: I am happy to see about a 12 per cent growth in Indonesian tourists visiting Korea in the first half of 2018. Korea has many things to offer for everyone in any generation because it’s a country in which tradition and modernity coexist in harmony. It’s a cradle of high technology and cool electronic gadgets, and the birthplace of glamorous K-pop and fashion, yet also attaches a lot of importance to preserving traditional values and cultures from cuisine to art, and much more. Many similarities exist between our traditional cultures that will make travel to South Korea a comfortable and memorable experience.

What do you like about staying in Indonesia? KC-B: My wife and I fell in love with Indonesia and its people, which is why we returned to our “second home” after the 13 years since I was first posted at the Korean Embassy in Jakarta in 2003. I am always greeted with sweet smiles, a warm-hearted welcome, and the hospitality of Indonesians—great assets that you should be proud of. We are also impressed by the great, wild nature and potential for eco-tourism in Indonesia from North Sumatra to Kalimantan when we visited the national parks and watched rare tropical birds and orangutan families.

What do you do during your spare time?KC-B: My wife and I are trying to spend as much time as possible visiting galleries and art exhibitions, and we also play golf together with friends, and with members of JAGA (Jakarta Ambassadors Golf Association).

In which areas are the United Kingdom and Indonesia focusing their ongoing and upcoming bilateral programmes?HE Moazzam Malik: Besides hundreds of years of shared history, the UK and Indonesia are celebrating 70 years of diplomatic relations next year to mark our wide-ranging partnership. Even in the span of four years under President Joko Widodo, a total of eight memorandums of understanding have been signed with the latest focusing on cyber security—the UK is the first country to have signed such an MOU with Indonesia.

Trade and investment sit at the heart of our relationship with many British businesses present here and a growing number of of Indonesian investors in the UK. We also work together on many other areas from policing to space activity, to sports, which resulted in collaboration at the Asian Games 2018, and so on.

In your opinion, what can Indonesia learn from the UK and vice versa?MM: As the UK grows more diverse, we can learn about diversity from Indonesia. Most countries are homogenous with their populations more or less the same; in the modern world, as people easily move around and migrate, we are learning to live with a growing diversity. Indonesia, however, was born diverse with many different cultures united in one country. To get the story of Indonesia better known in the UK and to get British-Muslim and Indonesian-Muslim communities talking to each other are important themes of my work here.

Indonesia has the potential to be an example to others as a plural, economically dynamic, and democratic country in the global, modern age. The UK, in turn, is a very organised country with strong rule of law, free and open press, a thriving democratic system, and a very strong commitment to internationalism and multiculturalism. We can work together to show that democracy, openess and multilateralism deliver good outcomes for all people.

What are the things to do and places to visit in the UK?MM: We are a diverse country that has many different things to show the world as proven by London’s rank as the second-most-visited city, in terms of international arrivals, with its great history, culture, art, food, and more. Outside of the capital, you can go to Oxford for its heritage buildings; to the north of England for scenic countryside in the Yorkshire Dales; to Scotland for its Highlands; in Wales, there’s Pembrokeshire; and Northern Ireland is made famous thanks to Game of Thrones. As such, the number of Indonesians going to the UK is increasing each year by about 25 per cent.

What do you like about staying in Indonesia? MM: I love the smiles and friendliness of the people here, plus the weather is warm and the culture is marvelous. Jogjakarta, for example, I love it as the heart of Javanese culture and also as a melting pot and an educational capital. Other places I’ve enjoyed include Flores, Lombok, Manado, Ternate, and Halmahera with their beautiful nature and wildlife—a very exciting, modern, diverse, and robust country in summary.

What do you do during your spare time?MM: I listen to a lot of music from many genres, read many novels, go to the cinemas often, love to play tennis, enjoy walking around Jakarta, and I am a big fan of Liverpool FC.

Three celebrities share with Anastasia Wibowo and Novranto Huntua their lifelong dreams of setting foot in the country’s political scene

True Calling

“It has been a long time coming,” says Krisdayanti, opening the conversation with Indonesia Tatler about her political ambitions. The humble and adorable pop diva has been a successful singer for some 25 years now, so what has driven her to join the political world? “First of all, it is because of my love for Indonesia,” she says. “Politics have always been a part of my life. So I have asked my husband’s permission and the support of my family, and I feel like this is the right time for me to contribute for this country.”

For the 2019 legislative election, the beautiful songstress is running as the legislative candidate with the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) for the electoral district of East Java V in Malang Raya. Although now based in Jakarta, she still supports her hometown of Batu, a city near Malang. Her vision and mission are in line with PDI-P, which is to actualise welfare for the Indonesian people and advance female political participation. “Women’s participation in politics is still less than 30 per cent,” says the mother of four.

“One of the reasons I joined PDI-P is because it has its own political candidate training, including for the campaign team,” Krisdayanti explains. Would she be worried if people doubt her competency in politics? “I don’t mind. But they need to know that I take this very seriously,” she adds. “If I get elected, I will opt to sit in either Commission VIII or X, as my mission is to improve children’s education and promote female empowerment,” says Krisdayanti with a charming smile.

Presenter and actor Muhammad Farhan is a fine example of one of the nation’s top celebrities who decided to take the plunge into politics. Joining the National Democrat (NasDem) party, Farhan, who was born in Bogor on February 25, 1970, advances as legislative candidate number 1 for the Electoral District 1 of West Java, which includes cities of Bandung and Cimahi.

For Farhan, an admirer of national hero and proclamator Mohammad Hatta, his strong desire to enter politics is because he wants to be a part of a national movement pushing for positive change and progress for the beloved country of Indonesia.

As a legislative candidate, Farhan is determined to make the West Java region—especially the cities of Bandung and Cimahi—more advanced and modern, with a healthy population and a clean and beautiful landscape.

However, in striving to realise his goal as a member of the House of Representatives (DPR) of the Republic of Indonesia, Farhan wants to achieve success far away from money politics and avoiding “black” campaigns. Farhan, who is an alumnus of the faculty of economics of Padjajaran University, explains: “I want to participate in clean politics. The practice of money politics is unwise—and it does not benefit the public.” Farhan believes that money should not be an incentive to vote for someone. The most important thing is to be consistent, he says, and to stay in touch, directly absorb, and at the same time provide solutions for every problem faced by the community.

If God sees his efforts to become a member of DPR RI through to fruition, Farhan is ready to serve and be placed on any commission, but his choice is the DPR RI Commission VII, which focuses on energy and mineral resources, research and technology, as well as the environment.

Since a hiatus from her music, Chicha Koeswoyo, the former child singer who was widely popular back in 1976, is now involved in politics through the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P). For the 2019 legislative election, she has become one of the legislative candidates for membership of the People’s Representative Council (DPR) of the Republic of Indonesia in the electoral district of DKI Jakarta I in the East Jakarta administrative area.

“My decision to dive into politics is solely to dedicate my service to the wider community,” Chicha explains to Indonesia Tatler. With her tagline “Once a child singer, now caring for children”, Chicha, who is the first daughter of Indonesia’s famed musician Nomo Koeswoyo, has a vision to stand up for the rights of women and children to be physically and mentally healthy, smart and prosperous. Should she be blessed to be elected as a member of DPR, Chicha wants to sit on Commission VIII, which focuses on women’s empowerment and child protection.

To realise this goal, Chicha, who is a fan of the proclamator and first Indonesian President Ir. Soekarno, is determined to be consistent in her approach and be ready to mingle directly with the wider community to absorb and fight for their aspirations and provide solutions.

“Politics is a new world for me,” she says. “However, with the support of family, friends, and volunteers, none of this will be an obstacle for me to serve and provide protection for children and to improve women’s welfare on a national scale,” says the mother of two, ending our conversation.

Dilla is an animal lover and is the youngest of three sisters—she grew up with dogs in her house. During our talk, she affectionately calls her 5-year-old female golden retriever, which she takes with her to Anantya: “Bella, come here!” Dilla waves her hands. In her childhood, her father, who is also an animal lover, often took Dilla to watch horse racing.

Her love of horses dates back since a young age, but she actively started riding in 1999—and hasn’t quit ever since. She regularly rides twice a week, enjoying it as both a leisure and a sport activity. Asked about her preference, she is fine with riding either male or female horses. “Some people say that female horses are moodier, but it’s different in my experience. Both are fine,” she tells us. Her tip for beginners? Don’t be afraid.

Aside from her horse-riding hobby, Dilla is also a photographer. Last year, she released a black-and-white photo book entitled A Trunk and Other Tails, which tells the story of relationships and bonds between suffering animals and their caretakers. The series of photographs featured a number of animals such as orangutans in Kalimantan and elephants in Thailand. Aside from Jakarta, in the past Dilla also held exhibitions in China and Finland.

Next month, Dilla, along with three other female photographers, COMO Foundation and Leica Singapore, is going to hold an exhibition in Singapore. A loyal Leica Camera user, Dilla was also appointed as ambassador for the brand from 2016 to 2017.

Delightful DifferencesIt is a fine Saturday afternoon when we meet Renitasari and Ryan Adrian at the Raffles Jakarta hotel. The couple decided to go all-black for this special shoot—the gorgeous Renitasari clad in a black sleeveless jumpsuit with a big belt accent and her hair in sleekly snatched ponytail, while Ryan wears a black shirt and trousers. They have been married for five years now. Interestingly enough, before they decided to tie the knot, the couple were long-time friends. “We met via email—I wrote a complaint letter to her because our sponsorship deal went wrong at the time,” Ryan laughs. “From then on, we became friends.”

This is the second marriage for both of them. Although they got along well, they admitted it was not easy to merge two families, especially the children. “It took a while to adjust,” Ryan says. Together, the couple have five daughters: Nadya Natasha, Adiva Kayla Adrian, Azzura Jasmine Adrian, Raisha Zahra, and Adeyla Shaina Adrian. What draws them to each other? “Ryan is smart—he is like my human Wikipedia. He is also protective, caring, and open for discussion,” Renita says. “I had deep trauma in my previous relationship, but I see Ryan as a responsible man with a clear vision in life.” Ryan continues: “Renita is a well-rounded and sincere woman. She shows her true self, and that’s why I trust her.”

Close ConnectionThey first met during a gathering between friends at an Italian restaurant now closed. But Eliana Putri Antonio and Syarif Bastaman grew even closer and are still married happily to each other. “It was a happy second chance for both of us,” says Eliana. “You need luck to find your soulmate, sincerity to base the relationship on, and blessing from the One above to help keep it together—especially when your partner had a serious relationship previously.”

Syarif then adds that a marriage is ideally until death doth part, but sometimes there are problems that leave divorce a better choice than lifelong incompatibility and strife. “When it does come to that point, do not be afraid to seek an amicable divorce,” he

says. “We need to be honest and to prepare ourselves by learning from past experiences upon coming into a second marriage, which will help achieve a happier union.” As such, amid Syarif ’s busy time running his company and Eliana’s packed schedule in creating jewellery for EPAJEWEL, the two share many sweet moments of togetherness, from a shared hobby of travelling to small daily intimate moments.

“I love our pillow-talk time the most because those moments keep us connected to each other,” Eliana says. “Yes, I’m the type of person who likes to give daily reports,” Syarif chimes in. “I can’t go a day without sharing about the day’s happenings—the whole 100 per cent of all the details and even 101 per cent with all the trimmings.”

Basic instinct culinary Classic and classy are the words to describe the French offerings at this eatery in the SCBD area, right from its sleek entrance on to the vast, wood-panelled dining room with plush seats in monochromes. Start the meal with Basic Instinct’s Kale Salad, which is anything but basic with its blueberry dressing and sunflower seeds, followed by juicy pan-seared duck breast with fruity chutney, or a humongous portion of Australian wagyu tomahawk steak—sharing optional.

umamya sushiAll things sushi and sashimi in assortments of perfect rolls and cuts are the main stars in this North Jakarta establishment that puts quality at the forefront. Take the shibo sakenigiri, for example, which is the pure fatty part of a salmon and which is only available in up to eight precious pieces a day. Enjoy this rare moment of relaxation with friends and family while seated on the swing chairs, or on the mat-lined floor.

Onni hOuseIn the west of Jakarta, ONNI Flower Studio blooms into ONNI House, which serves food and also sells household goodies and accessories. With such a camera-loving décor replete with blossoms and rustic charms, each artfully arranged plate of Eastern-Western fusion earn an extra brownie point besides its delicious taste—the fresh gado-gado salad, for example. Bolder flavours are available in dishes such as Javanese-style stir-fry noodle, and bulgogi fried rice topped with a poached egg.

Enjoy life to its fullest at these new restaurants, which serve only the best cuisine in picturesque settings

Wan treasuresWan Treasures in Pantai Indah Kapuk begins a decadent journey from its royal-blue-streaked dining area down to its specialties of handmade noodle and dim sum. Go straight for the Hong Kong-style noodle with soy-cooked pork and fish-roe wonton topped with fragrant and plenty truffle paste. Then, try some trendy siewmai with either spicy mozzarella or foie gras toppings, and har gao that turns plump with prawn and fish roe wrapped in gold-dusted black skin.

Kam’s rOast After quite the wait, Kam’s Roast has arrived in Pantai Indah Kapuk from Hong Kong although still without the famed roast goose due to avian import regulations. Zooming in straight to the quality meats after admiring the colourful murals and assorted lanterns, there’s the noteworthy roast duck with crispy skin made even better with the plum sauce. For a juicier choice, the premium pork belly is heavenly with plenty alternating layers of fat and meat.
