as well as help in the soup kitchens, the Volunteer Club continued withtheir quest to collect coats and blankets for those less fortunate. All dona-tions that have been collected will be distributed in both Lebanon Countyand New York City. This year has been especially hard on everyone…financially, mentally and physically; however, the need is greater thanever to help others in need and that’s where NL always seems to step inand show their compassion to others! We have collected coats, blankets, hats and scarves to give to those in need and with your help we madethis year as successful as the years in the past. The Volunteer Club would like to thank each one of you for your con-

MIDDLE SCHOOL

The 6th grade ELA students were given anopportunity to help with a huge, altruistic projectcreated by former Jonestown Elementary teacher,Rita White and her family. Rita’s son, Kevin, wassent to Kuwait with the PA guards for a nine-month deployment and she wanted to sendChristmas stockings to him and his troop forChristmas. She didn’t know at the time that shewould have to send 1,300 stockings to completeher project. Rita and her family accepted thechallenge and bought supplies and goodies to fillthe 1,300 stockings. Then with help from familyand friends; made all the stockings out of recy-cled Christmas cards. She then reached out tovarious teachers to have their students write outindex cards with special messages to the troops. That’s where 6th grade came in. Along with the3rd, 4th, and 5th graders at Jonestown, 6thgraders wrote over 140 positive and supportivemessages for thetroops. They wereextremely honoredand excited to bepart of such anamazing project!

First Graders at FB Get Ready for the Holidays!

All Votes Count at Fredericksburg Elementary! On Tuesday, November 3rd, while the entire country voted for the next president of theUnited States, students at Fredericksburg Elementary School also had a chance to maketheir vote count. Although no student is eligible to vote in the real election, we decided tohave students learn about the importance of voting by participating in a mock presiden-tial election. Students created their own voter registration card to bring to vote, they were required to sign in whenreporting to the polling station, students were then directed to a private booth to cast their ballot, and after castingtheir vote they received an “I voted” sticker to proudly wear all day long. Votes were tallied and by the end of the daythe students heard who Fredericksburg Elementary School elected as the next president of the United States. Thisactivity got the students aware of the election and voting process and peaked their interest to then go home and hearif the candidate who won at school, also won America’s vote. The goal of this day was to make the students aware ofhow important it is to vote and have your voice heard!

FREDERICKSBURG FOCUS

On December 3rd, All first graders participated in a Fredericksburg tradition: painting giant ornaments to hang fromthe ceiling in the hallway. Students used their creativity and art skills to decorate the different ornaments any waythey chose. As they shared watercolor paint sets, they talked about how the holidays make them feel, what they aremost excited for, and traditions their families carry out. They even sang along to some holiday tunes!”

Needless to say, the year 2020 has been nothing but abnormal for all of us.Whether it is wearing a mask, working from home, visiting family and friendsvia Zoom only, or simply scheduling a time slot a week in advance to take apicture with Santa who is nine feet away and behind plexiglass; things are justnot life as we knew it. In the midst of the pandemic, we have had people whohave experienced great loss, along with the struggle to economically survive.

As we enter the 2020 holiday season, it seems like joy and comfort need to bespread more than ever this year. There are people out there who believe muchthe same, even in the most unlikely of places.

This past fall, it was a routine trip to a mechanic’s garage for an oil change thatset the wheels in motion (no pun intended) to help aidfamilies in need. Because this mechanic volunteeredhis time to help a nonprofit groupkeep their vehicles on the road, the nonprofit group shared withthe mechanic that they had toysto distribute to deserving children. From there, the mechanic had asimple conversation with aNorthern Lebanon staff memberwho then linked the nonprofitgroup with nurses in the NorthernLebanon elementary schools. Thenurses provided the ages of stu-dents from families in need. Thenonprofit group then donated atoy to be given to each of thesechildren in addition to those gra-ciously donated by NorthernLebanon elementary faculty andstaff members each holiday season.

So, as we find ourselves trudging through the rest of 2020, remember, some of the joy andcomfort that people need during this holiday season can come from the most unlikely ofplaces, at any given time, or any given place. You could be the one that just happened to bein the right place at the right time to make a positive impact.

We wish you the happiest of holidays and the best 2021 that anyone could ever have!
