Activities and Education

Carolyn’s Corner Book Club

The Book Club is currently reading and will meet and discuss Maud’s Line by Margaret Verble on July 6 and 20 at 10 a.m. in the conference room on the second floor. The book club meets on the first and third Thursday of each month and is open to all. The August reading will be The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot and will be discussed on August 3 and 17.

Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She is known to present-day scientists for her cells from cervical cancer. She was a poor Southern tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave ancestors, yet her cells were taken without her knowledge and still live decades after her death. Cells descended from her may weigh more than 50M metric tons.

HeLa cells were vital for developing the polio vaccine; uncovered secrets of cancer, viruses, and the atom bomb’s effects; helped lead to important advances like in vitro fertilization, cloning, and gene mapping; and have been bought and sold by the billions. Yet Henrietta Lacks was buried in an unmarked grave.

The journey starts in the “colored” ward of Johns Hopkins Hospital in the 1950s, her small, dying hometown of Clover, Virginia — wooden slave quarters, faith healings, and voodoo. Today there are stark white laboratories with freezers full of HeLa cells, East Baltimore children and grandchildren live in obscurity, see no profits, and feel violated. The dark history of experimentation on African Americans helped lead to the birth of bioethics, and legal battles over whether we control the stuff we are made of.

The Human Brain Results from cognitive tests show 30% of

80-year-olds perform as well as young

adults.

Your brain is about 2% of your total body

weight but uses 20% of your body's energy.

The energy used by the brain is enough to

light a 25 watt bulb.

More electrical impulses are generated in

one day by a single human brain than by all

the telephones in the world.

How much does the human brain think?

70,000 is the number of thoughts that it is

estimated the human brain produces on an

average day.

After age 30, the brain shrinks a quarter of

a percent (0.25%) in mass each year.

Albert Einstein’s brain weighed 1,230

grams (2.71 lbs.), significantly less then the

human average of 1,300g to 1,400g (3 lbs.).

MOVIE Matinee Tuesday, July 25

12:30 p.m. Multi-purpose room

Nutrition site Summer greetings everyone! Are you awake? I don’t mean literally, I mean figuratively. Are you really aware of what is going on around you, how events, your surroundings and other people impact or influence you and how you think or feel about it? Are you stuck in a rut or routine and just going through the motions of life without much consideration or regard for the outcomes? Or, do you ponder what is happening around you, through you, about you and for you AND others? Remember that age is just a number. I’ve known many young adults who were wise beyond their years and older adults who still have a lot to learn. Your behavior begins with a thought, a feeling, an attitude, then a belief that results in behavior. The manner in which we conduct ourselves is a result of all our past and present experiences and beliefs. My challenge to you this July is to awaken to what you think, how you feel, what you believe and how you behave. Before we can understand, appreciate and connect with others on a meaningful level, we must first know ourselves. Take time to ‘dig a little deeper’ into the soil of who you are and discover what truths lie below the surface. Blessings!!! Emily
