Melanie’s Thoughts Melanie Wait Principal Bridge Report SPORTING SUCCESS Congratulations to our primary sporting stars. Our primary students were equal handicap winners at the District Athletics carnival; overall winners at the Nyah District Carnival; winners of the Shuttle relay and we also had a number of age champions and students selected to represent our school at the State Athletics Carnival. Ryan Grace, Murray Ogle, Ryan Domaille and Cooper Andrews were Age Champions at the Nyah District Carnival. YEAR 12 As the end draws closer for our Year 12 students it is important that they realise that these last few weeks leading up to their exams are the most important. These weeks should be used to consolidate and enhance their knowledge and practice exam techniques to maximize their results. All students from Year 12 are expected to be at school until Friday 2 nd of October ABSENCES Just a reminder that students are required to attend school every day, with the exception of illness. Students who had less that 85% should have recently received a letter outlining the concern. Less than 85% attendance is not acceptable and if these absences continue further discussions about this issue will occur. Congratulations to all those students who have over 95% attendance. These students all received a merit award. Don’t forget if your child is away a note must be provided as explanation. BER Our National Pride works has already begun in the school with painting and the replacement of downpipes currently taking place. Last week Laing Rourke, the contractors for our ‘School’s for the 21 st Century’ works met at the school to discuss the installation of the new library. This meeting was quite a success, the old library will remain and a new library will be located in the Pizza Oven area. We feel extremely lucky that we are able to keep this building. The installation of the new library should begin January 2010. NAPLAN Our school has received our students’ results for their national tests and parents should have received their results in the mail. There are some very pleasing results and some students should be very happy with the progress. Most students have shown significant improvement since their last testing (BST, ELLA or SNAP) and this is extremely important. However there are also some areas that need improvement. Please remember if you were unable to attend the literacy and mathematics information session due to other commitments, please contact the school if you are interested in accessing the resources which were distributed. A big thank you to the front office staff who have been busily putting these resources together. These packs offer some fun, simple, quick and enjoyable activities that parents and friends can participate in with their children. Please take this opportunity to gain access to these homework packs as by both parents and teachers working together great learning outcomes will continue to be achieved. Students at the 30 minute presentation Environmental Focus Last Wednesday, 9th September Donna Wardlow from Wakool Shire Council came to talk to students and staff about promoting and further developing the recycling program which is occurring within our school setting. Some great additional information and hands on resources were gained. A special mention and congratulations must once again go to Miss Smith and Yr 3/ 4 for their ongoing efforts and commitment to establishing an excellent recycling programme within Tooleybuc Central School. Our school has already achieved a Bronze Certificate for our recycling efforts – well done everyone! Let’s now set our sights on the Silver and Gold Awards! “Little Big Shots” Primary Excursion On Wednesday, 16th September students from Kindergarten to Year 4 had the wonderful opportunity of attending a production of various short films in Swan Hill that were made by young children. Our students thoroughly enjoyed the performance. Our students’ behaviour was fantastic and they all once again represented Tooleybuc Central School proudly. Well done to all and a special thank you to Miss Smith for organising such a great excursion. 2010 Kindergarten Orientation On Thursday, 10th September and Thursday, 17th September Tooleybuc Central School has once again been continuing their 2010 Kindergarten Orientation programme. Last week, with wonderful assistance from the Yr 5s, we made some beautifully decorated boxes and delicious chocolates to place in these boxes. Hopefully they shared these goodies with you all!! Our 2009 Kinders and Pre-schoolers also created their own jigsaw puzzles using water paints. What impressive skills using the interactive whiteboard they are developing - popping balloons galore and the eraser tool!

This week we read, “The Musicians of Bremen” and had a wonderful time creating our own guitars and playdoh animal creatures. The Kinders and Pre-schoolers even made their own playdoh! (Hopefully the cleaners are still talking to me!!) The pizza oven was also put to good use with some scrumptious pizzas being eagerly eaten by our ‘ravenous’ Kinders and Pre-schoolers. After all it had been a very busy morning so all definitely deserved a good feast. Once again a big thank you to Larissa, Lee and Marita for their ongoing support and enthusiasm in making our Orientation days so successful. A full day for 2010 Tooleybuc Kindergarten children will be held early next term. A note will be sent out soon with more details. Primary Assembly Today the Primary Assembly was held in the MPC. What a wonderful play presented by Yr 3/ 4 – we definitely have some budding actors and actresses who are destined for the bright lights! Great job Yr 3/ 4 and Miss Smith. Also super singing from Yr 1 /2 and Miss Hay – don’t be surprised if you see them on the new series of “Battle of the Choirs”! Congratulations to our Young Leaders who ran the assembly and were once again supreme role models and excellent public speakers. Up and Coming Events Regional Spelling Bee Finals On 22nd Prudence McKindlay, Casey Harvey and Callum McNab will be travelling to Griffith to participate in the Riverina Spelling Bee Finals. We wish them all the very best and eagerly wait to hear about their excellent performances. Fire Brigade Talk To be held on the 18th September for all students from Kindergarten to Year 4. Whole School Assembly Monday, Week 10, 27th September Kindergarten What a busy and exciting few weeks we have had! A big congratulations must go to all the Kindergartens for their wonderful help during the 2010 Kindergarten Orientation Programme. They have continually been showing what responsible and mature ‘big’ people they now are. Kindergarten have recently been participating in some new and improved Smart Board activities aimed at further enhancing their literacy and numeracy skills through highly interactive and engaging activities. It is amazing to witness how

Term 3 – Week 8 Friday, 18th September 2009

6

quickly they have picked up numerous technology skills – keep up the wonderfully efforts Kindergarten! In modelled and guided reading activities students are becoming very clever at recognising questions marks and exclamation marks and are now working hard on learning about speech marks. We are also continuing to develop our skills in identifying whether books are factual or fictional. Over the next few weeks Kindergarten will be working hard on producing recounts in their writing activities. Recounts very simply tell, ‘what has happened’ and are very much like retelling events that have occurred. During maths children are becoming very proficient at quickly identifying number patterns using our 100s frame and are taking great pride in themselves when they are using ‘grown-up and sophisticated’ terms such as odd and even numbers and on and off decade counting! Their speed of recalling before and after numbers continues to improve and many are developing very good strategies for working out simple addition and subtraction problems to 20. Once again Kindergarten well done and keep up the hard work! A special mention must go to our star “Nyah Sports Day” athletes, namely Cooper Andrews and Ryan Domaille who both had brilliant stand out performances. Congratulations boys! Year One/Two Year 1/2 students have been involved in a variety of extra-curricula activities in the past few weeks including Nyah Sports Day, where students learnt a variety of skills in different areas of sport, Fruit and Vegie Week, where we discussed the importance of eating lots of fruit and vegetables, Environment Talk with Donna Woodward where students learnt how to care for our environment by recycling and Wheel Sports Talk where the students had the opportunity to discuss how to stay safe in sport. Student behaviour was exceptional and I congratulate Year 1 and 2 on their efforts. We have nearly finished our 3rd Accelerated Literacy book for the year and students’ reading and writing skills have improved greatly since we started in Term 2. Students seem to be enjoying our new text ‘Snap! went Chester’ and students have developed their narrative writing structure since studying the text. Well done to everyone who is reading every night. It doesn’t take long to read a page or two every night so thank you to all students who are trying hard to do this. Guided Reading Groups have started again along with Accelerated Literacy. We have Emily and Maryanne in our class 3 times a week to listen to

the students read which is very important. We are also working with the students in groups to assist them with their area of need. This is working very well and we will hopefully continue this into Term 4. Thank you to Maryanne and Emily for your help with these groups. Students have been making some brilliant artworks again this term. There are some very creative students in year 1/2 and these art works have been chosen to go into the Swan Hill show this year. They include a still life chalk pastel drawing and self portrait paintings. Please come in and see the variety and creativity we have on display in our classroom. They are looking fantastic! Our vegetables are growing strong and are nearly ready to transport them into the field at the Ag Plot. We have some very healthy looking radish, rockmelon, pumpkin, carrot and zucchini seedlings. Cooking will not be far away I am sure. I am very proud of Year 1/2 and the effort they have been putting into their school work and their general behaviour. I am always proud of the work they produce and it shows that they are happy with their work as well. Congratulations Year 1/2. Year Three/Four In HSIE the students have been working with a partner to research one of the Australian identities on our current monetary notes. They are in the process of creating a presentation based on their research. In Science the students have been researching different bridge types. Miss Rutherford has registered the 3/4's for EngQuest 2009. If you would like any further information about this please contact Miss Rutherford. As a part of the EngQuest the students will be researching, designing, constructing and testing bridges. Once they have worked through this process they will receive a participation certificate from EngQuest. Congratulation to the Grade 3/4's for being the only class (in all stages, in the Nation) to be awarded a ‘Class Commendation’ for this years National Trust Schools Competition. There is a press release on the National Trust website about the award winners for this year, which includes us. You can view this at http://www.nsw.nationaltrust.org.au/ under the ‘latest news’ section. Year 3/4 welcomed Mr Battanali from the Wakool Council into our classroom this week with the intent of joining forces as future ‘Weed Warriors’. This

Term 3 – Week 8 Friday, 18th September 2009

7

program is designed to educate students about the weeds growing on their properties and methods of eradication. Furthermore, Mr Battanali is able to demonstrate a natural process of decreasing the spread of such plants using pest control. This year we are nurturing Horehound Plume Moth from caterpillar form inside a plastic box filled with the noxious weed Horehound. This is a very interesting and challenging experiment for students to enjoy. We are coming to a close on our Accelerated Literacy text Refugees which has provided the students with a fantastic new way of applying specific writing techniques and demonstrated various grammatical processes. We will be completing our own published versions of this text using our new knowledge and familiarity of author David Miller’s writing style. We have been practicing very hard for our Drama performance and hope that everyone watching enjoys the acting and storyline. Props were planned and put together by the students and as a group they have worked well together. The excursion to see ‘Little Big Shots’ should enhance and foster and budding actors amongst us! This week during Visual Arts the students were encouraged to put together the skills and knowledge learnt this term to create a drawing of their own. This piece will be entered into the Swan Hill Show along with other works they have completed. Certificates from Special Forever have arrived for our students with Lane Hodgson and Laura Domaille receiving their own special Certificate of Merit. Year Five/Six Students are continuing their study of “George’s Marvellous Medicine”. They try to determine the origin of selected words and are constantly amazed with many of their origins. Students are spending time discussing with each other how sentences may or may not have independent and/or dependent clauses. This has been a slow process to get their heads around but have risen to the challenge. They have also been challenged and encouraged to highlight in their copy of the study passage all nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs.

There are many discussions about how particular words are used in the sentences. Our Science lesson last week was reduced in length due to the “Wheel Talk” presentation. Students were in awe of Jason’s skill at handling a wheelchair. They found it very challenging to manoeuvre a wheelchair while playing a game of basketball. They had so much fun. For Science this week, students examined a timeline and overhead transparencies which highlighted the movements of the tectonic plates over millions of years.

A “Recycling” presentation last Wednesday afternoon meant that we were not able to do our art. Although disappointed, students were looking forward to this week’s activity – block printing, but first they had to make the blocks which was a bit messy! Students have completed their items for the Swan Hill Show. These will be delivered to the show office early next week once they have been labelled with entry tags. Students participated very well on Nyah Sports day. It was great to see the enthusiasm and enjoyment. Rain unfortunately hampered last week’s PE lesson. This week we resumed our dance theme. Remember, if you have any questions regarding your child’s learning, please come in and have a talk. Green Action Group (GAG) News Thanks to the Green Action Group we were lucky enough to have a visit from Donna Wardlow who works for the Wakool Council last Wednesday. Part of Donna's job includes coordinating the Waste Wise Program in this area. Primary, Secondary and the Staff participated in a presentation directed toward recycling and ways to improve our school, home and community environments. Donna presented some of our students with the Bronze Award for being Waste Wise and has now further set the challenge to achieve the first Silver Award in this area. Environmental awareness is a whole school and community project and we thank everyone for their support and contributions.

Secondary Report Year 11/12 Study Day Balranald Students from Years 11 and 12 have taken part in a study day at Balranald Central School. The aim of the day was to help our students gain the necessary skills to effectively study and prepare for their up coming exams. All students who participated gained some valuable skills that they will be able to implement into their current study programs. Year 11 Crossroads Program The Crossroads program is a mandatory program that all students in years 11 and 12 must complete as part of the HSC program of study. The program aims to reinforce issues studied in the year 7-10 PDHPE program on drug and relationship issues. Our year 11 students attended a health day at the club to help address requirements of this course. All students were a credit to the school and have

gained some valuable insights into drug use and health. Wheel Talk Program Students from K-10 were able to experience for half an hour the challenges faced by people in wheelchairs. The school was fortunate enough to have a representative from Wheel Sports come to the school and give students an insight into his life. Students were reminded of the dangers of life and how precious our health is to us. The students were then able to have some fun and play some wheelchair basketball. While we all had fun I’m sure the reality that we were able to get up and walk away from the chair will make us all think before we challenge ourselves to become involved in dangerous activities. 7/8 Play Update Students in years 7 and 8 have been busily preparing a production of Sleeping Beauty. We have some very talented actors who are really making sure their performances are something that will be remembered for years. So far some standout performances are been given by John Hull in his role as King Bertrand and Cody Wilkins whose impression of middle aged nurse will be one not to be missed! Borambola Students from years 9, 10 and 11 will be embarking on an excursion to Borambola sport and recreation camp next week. The aim of the camp is to support the work being done in both the crossroads program and in PE. After the road trip to Wagga the students are looking forward to hanging from some high ropes, canoeing and hanging out on the flying fox. Good luck to all campers – we hope you enjoy our trip. Make way for Pompeii! Years 7 and 8 students are busily preparing for their excursion next term to visit the travelling exhibition of Pompeii at the Melbourne Museum. Miss Hunt assures all students that the experience will be thoroughly enjoyed by all and every student will be begging their parents to take them to Italy to see the real thing. More updates will follow as we move closer to departure date. School Band Mr Allanson has enlisted the help of some of our students to begin our very own school band. With the help of Stu Holt from Musos stuff in Swan Hill, students will be involved in a workshop to help maximise their skills on the 29th of September.

Connected Classroom Training Last week teachers from both Primary and Secondary were involved in training in the connected classroom. With this training under their belts all teachers involved are keen to implement new and exciting ways of using the interactive whiteboard in their classrooms. COIL sport COIL sport is well underway with the teachers' team trouncing the students in the latest softball match. Special mention must go out to Mr Daniel “competitive” Wait who was a leader of the team and lifted the teachers game to ensure a victory. Students I’m sure will be looking to avenge this result. Formal The School Formal will be at the Tooleybuc Sporting Club on the 1st October for Year 10, 11 and 12 Students and Staff. Cost will be $22. Invitations will be out soon for more information. Year Seven/Eight Year 7/8 have almost finished their poetry unit and have added words like onomatopoeia, alliteration, simile and metaphor to their expanding vocabularies. We have had some excellent writing experiences as the students have converted stories into poems and poems into stories, Noah’s Ark has never been so chaotic. The class have created some great Acrostic Poems (pictured) and are now using their vast knowledge of Aboriginal History to analyse symbols in Aboriginal Poetry. In LOTE, Year 7/8 are currently presenting their PowerPoint assignments that they worked so hard on last term. So far we have been to Naples, Campania, Lazio and Lombardi, and it didn’t cost a cent. As part of our Italian studies and experience we also made authentic Italian pizza this week. Bon Appetite! Year10 have finally been rescued from the deserted island that they spent most of Term 3 surviving. The messages in the bottles must have finally reached help. They are now enjoying their 15 minutes of fame and are designing their own advertisements for the products of which they are the spokesperson. Their products include: torches; waterproof phones; jet skis; fruit juice; and sunscreen – bet they would have been handy on the island guys! Year 11 have finished reading their novel, which for some was the first book that they ever finished. Congratulations! We are now exploring the literary

world of characters, settings and themes. Their analysing and writing skills are being fine tuned for their HSC studies which commence next term. With the Trials behind them Year 12 English are now heading full steam ahead into study mode for their HSC. The next month will see them revising the 4 modules that they will be writing on in their last high school exam EVER! The visual elements in Henry Lawson’s short stories, the themes and techniques utilised in Wilfred Owen’s war poetry, the sense of Belonging in The Crucible, and last but not least, they will be meeting up with the Kerrigan’s from, The Castle. Congratulations to those students who presented their global village on time this week, great work! Acrostic Poems Year 7/8 English Poster by Paul Richardson Cat by Harriet McKindlay

CAREER NEWS Once again another busy two weeks, particularly for Year 12 students who are almost finished. All Year 12 students should be updating their resumes and actively be considering their future pathway. Remember I am available to help with this and we have a wealth of information in the careers room. Year Eleven Some Year eleven students have seen me regarding their subject changes for year twelve. It is important that all year eleven students see me if they wish to drop subjects as together we will check that this will not impact their future choices for when they leave school. In addition students need to speak with Miss Wait or Miss Hunt about this. Students undertaking a SBA can elect to drop one or two subjects, however again this needs to be discussed with Mrs Morton. Year Twelve All students have been given a booklet “Year 12 What Next?” It is hoped both students and parents are currently making use of these. In the careers room we also have the latest edition of ‘Next’ a magazine about life after school and the latest Smart Start. Students will be given an opportunity to read these at school and they may be borrowed to take home. All Year 12 students should now be updating their resume, actively looking for jobs and understand the process involved. I stress the importance in making use of my knowledge and the careers room for this information while you are at school. Questions about enrolment into TAFE or other courses should also be considered. Year 11 students- If possible begin to consider all options including courses (Uni and TAFE),

employment or a gap year. Many of the universities including Melbourne, Deakin and ACU are now allowing deferral for up to 2 years. Open Days Coming Soon Tue 22 and 28 Sept - Discover Deakin. This

holiday program gives the chance to get an inside look into Deakin and what it has to offer. To book, visit www.deakin.edu.au/discover

Fri 25 Sept, 2-4pm- Swinburne Walk ‘n’ Talk. Hear about students study experiences and courses. Targets students interested in ICT, mechatronics and robotics. See www.future.swinburne.edu.au/events

Work Experience / Work Placement All students who have completed this to date have done a wonderful job representing the school and gaining as mush as they can from their time out of school. I was pleased to see Year 10’s displaying increased maturity and feeling very proud of their efforts. Year 11 and 12’s have continued with work placement with some students going out in week 9. All students should be considering their next work experience or work placement at this stage.

Geoff at BR and C Tim at Swan Hill Chemicals La Trobe Uni Visit Last Thursday we were lucky enough to have had a visit by LaTrobe Uni, Mildura Campus. Students in Year 10 to 12 were given a short presentation by Rebecca, who is in the marketing/promotion sector of LaTrobe, and students were then able to gain information from a trailer which accompanied Rebecca. Overall this was a wonderful opportunity for students to access information to possibly use in the future. Future Career Activities Early next term the Army will be in the school to promote their trades. Students must be 16 years of age to attend an information talk and participate in

the activities. Further details of this shall come out early next term. Career Information In Information in recently includes brochures on Sports Therapy courses, Agriculture courses plus the current Uni handbooks. Please see me in the careers room if you wish to gain more information.

TOOLEYBUC LOCAL HEALTH ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETS

The Tooleybuc Health Service Advisory Committee met on Monday, 24 August 2009. Among the items for discussion were Podiatry and Physiotherapy services to the town and surrounding areas. The Committee was particularly interested to hear from the Wakool Shire’s new Community Development Officer, Joy Mason, about what her new role will involve. The Committee also heard from Jackie Forster, who is the Senior Programs Services Manager with the Mallee Division of GP. Part of Ms Forster’s role is putting much needed services into small rural communities. The Tooleybuc Health Service Advisory Committee will meet again on Monday, 12 October 2009 (changed to the 2nd Monday of the month). Members of the community should feel free to contact members of the Committee if they have any issues that they wish to be considered. Members of the Committee are: List members of the Committee;

P & C News

Just a short note to say thank you to all those who donated their time and baking skills to our recent BBQ / morning tea stalls at both the PSSA and Nyah Sports days. Special mention to the ladies who helped make the hamburgers (all 350 of them) and to Julie and Greg for cooking them. Both days were a great fundraising success for the P&C and without all the volunteer help would not be possible. Our new Bain Marie was put to the test and has proved to be a fantastic asset to our catering ventures. Well done everyone. The P&C has recently provided funds for a new PA system for the school as well as some great playground markings (e.g.: hopscotch) under and near the shaded outdoor area. Our chocolate fundraiser still has some families yet to return their money, please get this back to school ASAP so we can finalize this. Thank you Terri Ogle P&C President.
