We were very lucky with the weather last week for our primary and secondary swimming carnivals. The rain held off and both days were quite mild. As usual students were reminded to slip, slop and slap throughout the day. Both days ran very smoothly thanks to the organisation of Miss Moore and Mr Gallagher. Invitation to parents The P&C held its first meeting for the year on Wednesday night. At the meeting funds were allocated to the new sports academy being established by Mr Johnston, and the purchase of portable shade structures for students. The P&C encourage all parents old and new to attend. Meetings are held the first Wednesday of the month at the RSL Club. In the press I am often wary of the metropolitan press when it comes to reporting on school issues, however last week I was interviewed by a journalist from the Newcastle Herald. An excerpt from the article has been reproduced in the Ringer.
Parent get-together Last year the teaching staff, primary and secondary initiated an informal get-together with parents at the start of the school year. It is an opportunity to meet in a relaxed setting away from school. Please pop in for a sausage sandwich, or game of putt putt at the Sports Club 6.00-7.30pm next Thursday February 18.
Time for a check-up A new school year comes with welcome and un-welcome surprises. Some parents have reported signs of head lice or “nits”. The facts are that about 23% of primary students have head lice at any one time. Are you starting to scratch yet? Check out the information for treatment in the primary news. All parents are encouraged to consult their Doctor and have all children above six months old vaccinated for swine flu. Vaccinations are now readily available and free of charge from your local GP.
Local talent Anne and Tony Bishop have written and illustrated a series of children’s books “Tales From a Country Garden”. Their daughters Kate and Sarah attended Merriwa Central School and have fond memories of their time with us. The Bishop’s have kindly donated the collection to our Library. University entry Last week I reported that Emily Wightman and Micah Kiely had accepted offers to commence university study this year. More good news this week, that Tarryn Fredewell is also heading off to undergraduate study in fine arts teaching at the University of Newcastle. A fantastic effort for a small school with 50% of it’s graduates gaining university entry. Congratulations Emily, Micah and Tarryn.

MERRIWA CENTRAL SCHOOL
Deputy Principal I would like to take this opportunity to welcome everyone back to Merriwa Central for 2010. We are now in our third week of first term and I have been very impressed by the attitudes and efforts of our whole school community.
In order to maintain this excellent start to the year, and for the benefit of new students and parents, I would like to highlight three of our school policies.
Mobile Phones Mobile phones are not permitted at school. While some students may require their phones in transit to and from school they are to hand their phones in at the office as soon as they arrive and collect them at the end of the day.
If a student is caught with a phone it will be confiscated and handed to the office. The phone will be kept in the office for the duration of five business days.
If you need to contact your child while they are at school please phone the office and the message will be delivered as soon as possible.
Uniform Most students are presenting in perfect school uniform and they look fantastic! There are a few important points to remember: • Fully enclosed leather shoes are an OH&S
necessity. If a student is not wearing appropriate footwear they may be excluded from lessons.
• Fluorescent and coloured laces are NOT acceptable uniform. Laces are to be black for black shoes and white for white shoes.
• Skate hats are NOT acceptable uniform. School caps are required for participation in outdoor activities including sport.
• Uniform notes will only cover students for one day. Each day that a student is out of uniform will require a new note.
You Can Do It Our school is launching the You Can Do It program this year which aims to educate students from Kindergarten to Year 12 about Five Foundations for Achievement, Well Being and Positive Relationships.
The Five Foundations are Confidence, Persistence, Organisation, Getting Along and Resilience. Students will undergo the program in year groups throughout 2010 and into the future. This is an exciting and rewarding program that our whole school community will benefit from.
Adam Johnston
Deputy Principal
The Herald Saturday 6 February 2010
Merriwa Central School principal Darren Noonan did his
schooling at Merriwa, worked as a teacher around the state, and returned to Merriwa last year. He loves the town and he loves the school. If you look up the MySchool results for Merriwa they will show what governments have known for years-that 63% of its students come from homes with low incomes and parents whose formal education finished early. Literacy and numeracy levels are lower than national and statistically similar school averages. But there has been an education revolution at Merriwa Central, and it’s done much more than boost the school. This year the school received $237,000 of federal National Partnerships funds to employ a specialist literacy and numeracy deputy principal. Students will receive individual assistance, teachers will receive more training and parents will receive support to help children at home. That level of funding will continue for the next three years. Last year Merriwa received $104,000 in stimulus package funds for “desperately” needed maintenance work like painting and new carpets. There’s $1.2 million for a new primary administration building to replace a 20-year-old demountable. Most significantly for the town itself, the school is about to start work on a $2.2 million trade training centre, which will not only allow students to learn trades such as metalwork, engineering and hospitality at TAFE level, but will be available for community members to learn TAFE trades as well. “The boost to the school in terms of this funding is a welcome relief for the whole community” Noonan said. “The people of Merriwa want to see the children at our school successful and supported. It’s restored confidence in the future of the town to see that just because children don’t live in the bigger centres, doesn’t mean that they don’t get the best opportunities we can give them. “It’s certainly a time of renewal for us. To have that amount of money being spent after such a long time is a very good thing.”

Comments from the Kids at Merriwa Central School Primary Swimming Carnival
I’d like to give a big thanks Matthew Wightman, Kevin Barry, Simon and Lachlan Walmsley for helping in the morning to put up the tents and setup for the day. Thank you to all the parents and friends, who helped with timekeeping, ran the canteen and sausage sizzle. Without your help on this important day it would be less successful. THANKYOU!

• We all had a fun time. I went in the 25 m freestyle race and the relay. Hanna B (L)

Primary News
Years three to six will be having swimming for sport each Wednesday at 10.00am. Pool entry will be $1.70 per child, unless they obtain a season ticket. This will commence on 17 February and continue for the rest of Term 1 depending on weather conditions.
Swimming Carnival On Friday 5 February the Primary swimming carnival was held even though the weather didn’t look promising. The day ran rather smoothly and all children who competed tried their hardest. Some children had to compete in many events. The overall winner was Wentworth, closely followed by Blaxland, Lawson and Oxley having a tie for third. Thank you to all the parent helpers on the day. Without your help the carnival would not take place.

Tax File Numbers It’s time for the Year 9 students to apply for their Tax File Numbers. Merriwa Central School has an arrangement with the ATO to submit the application forms on behalf of the students. These forms are available at school and will be sent home with students in week 4. Students need to complete the form and supply a copy of their birth certificates including the number, state of issue and year of registration to the school and the TFN will be posted from the ATO to the home address. If you have forgotten your Tax File Number, you will need to telephone the ATO directly. University Road Show at Scone High School
Year 11 & 12 students are invited to attend the University Road Show held in conjunction with Scone High School. The bus will leave MCS at 8.45am and return at 2pm. Cost for the bus to be advised in the letter sent home this week. It is a good opportunity for stu-dents to talk to University Staff about further Education and Career options.

Head Lice The Facts Head lice infestations are a common occurrence, particularly in primary schools.
• about 23% of primary students have head lice at any one time
• anyone can catch head lice regardless of their age, sex, or how clean their hair is
• head lice move from one person's head to another via hair
• head lice do not survive long when they are off a human head
• head lice do not live on furniture, hats, bedding or carpet
• head lice have built up some resistance to head lice treatments Treatment • daily combing of white hair conditioner using a fine tooth comb is effective in getting rid of head lice and eggs (nits). School communities may need to hold 'check and treat' or Nitbuster days where everyone learns about and starts treatment on the same day. Tips for parents in reducing the spread of head lice As infestations are particularly common in primary schools, it is best to choose a treatment that can be used over time. There is no single solution to eradication, only persistence.
• regularly check your children's hair
• teach older children to check their own hair
• tie back and braid long hair
• keep a fine tooth head lice comb in the bathroom and encourage all family members to use it when they wash their hair.

Merriwa Central School Secondary
Swimming Carnival 2010 On Wednesday 3 February, the secondary students from Merriwa Central School headed out in their assortment of red, blue, yellow and green colours to represent their house at their annual swimming carnival. The team house captains took over and showed great leadership skills as they organised their houses for the relays, age races, mascot races, war cries and ensured all members were being sun smart. Merriwa Central School students made their school proud with their perfect enthusiasm and behaviour throughout the day. I would like to congratulate Blaxland on their outstanding win, they were no match for any other house. These results just show that persistence equals success. Results:
Blaxland 682 points Oxley 396 points Lawson 362 points (watch out for us on dry land!!!) Wentworth 210 points Age champions of 2010

CASSILIS PUBLIC SCHOOL
What a fantastic afternoon was had by all at the Samba Show at school on Wednesday afternoon. As can be seen in the small selection of photos below, everybody was involved throughout the whole show, and each of us thoroughly enjoyed ourselves while learning much about rhythm, different instruments, working together as a group, and, interaction across and between groups. A busy afternoon, but very worthwhile.

All on the beat here! There were many more photos available to view, too many to include here.
Thank you to all the parents who were able to attend our P&C Meeting last Monday evening. It was great to have so many in attendance, and I believe was a very fruitful meeting in our discussions and decisions. Please remember our next meeting which will be on Monday 1 March at 7pm, which will have the Annual General Meeting (AGM) at its commencement. It is so helpful for the school that we have nearly all families able to be in attendance at each meeting.
Once again this year, we would appreciate the assistance of any parent who could spare half an hour or so to listen to students read to them. Thank you to Mrs Joleane Morton who is able to once again assist us of a Wednesday, and Mrs Hilary Parker who is able to help us of a Thursday morning. If you feel you would like to assist, please contact me and we will organise a time to suit.
Our unit about the Winter Olympics in Vancouver has started for this term, although the lack of access to the internet on most computers has hampered it to some extent. This problem has hopefully been resolved today. Any assistance you may be able to give to your child / children in doing some research at home would be greatly appreciated. We will be especially working on it of a Tuesday and Thursday afternoon.

CASSILIS PUBLIC SCHOOL Swimming lessons start next Monday. A permission note is attached to this Newsletter. Please complete it and return with the payment ($10 per child for the week – pool entry) as soon as possible. Once again, we are able to cover the costs of travel through our CAP funds. We do hope that we have a week of good weather for a change. Due to the available times of instructors, our lessons are between 1pm and 2pm daily. This enables us to get back by home time each day.
Just a couple of reminders: If you have to collect children early, or arrive late, please complete the book in the office, as the roll has to be marked showing attendance as at 9am until 3pm. Please notify the school as early as possible if someone else will be picking your child(ren) up from school. I know that things often happen, and family / friends sometimes are called on to collect children, but, for your child’s safety, we appreciate being notified. These are to ensure the safety of our students with cars moving in and out of the playground. We appreciate that these normally do occur, but feel it appropriate to just put out a reminder at the beginning of the year, especially for new families. Thank you for your assistance.
Our last Veg Watch Session was held Wednesday, starting after Recess. This was our last session, and was the Summer aspect. Mrs Clout joined us for the day, and Lorna Adlem (our Veg Watch Coordinator).
Our P&C are starting a new major raffle on behalf of our school and request donations of items to go into our wine barrel for it. Donations can be put in the office, with a note to identify that they are for the raffle.
Also attached to our Newsletter this week is i n f or m ati on r eg ar di n g S wi n e F l u recommending that all be vaccinated (vaccine is free) as it is anticipated that this virus is going to become prevalent again in the near future.
Please join us on Friday morning for our first Assembly for 2010. We look forward to having families joining us to celebrate in children’s great efforts.
Have a fantastic week! Ross Craven JP
Principal Dates to remember: 10 Feb Veg Watch – Summer Session – 11:30am 12 Feb School Assembly – 9am 15 – 19 Feb Swimming Lessons Week 01 Mar P&C Meeting / AGM – 7pm
K-2 News This week Kinder will be learning the letter ‘Aa’, Year 1 will be learning the ‘ch’ sound while Year 2 will be learning the ‘au’ sound. Year 1 Tricky Words are ‘he’ and ‘she’ and Year 2 Tricky Words are ‘after’ and ‘every’. Kinder’s colour of the week is Pink and the Big Book of the Week is “The Ginger Bread Man”.
What great fun we all had at the Samba Show last Wednesday afternoon. It was wonderful to see everyone participate with such enthusiasm. This week in music we continued to practise some of the rhythms learnt and played them on some of the percussion instruments we have available to us at school. I really enjoyed this very much!
This year, once again, in the little room we have a new Good Behaviour, Homework and Reader system. When the students bring back their homework each day they are rewarded by getting a ticket place into a box. If they also display good behaviour or are working well during the day they can also receive a ticket in the behaviour box. The more often you can get a ticket in the box the better chance you have of winning an award. On Fridays we draw two tickets, one from each box, to see who our winners of the week are.
Thank you to everyone who remembered to bring in their library bag for library borrowing last week. This week as it was ‘Veg Watch’ we did not have Library but please remember to bring your books back the following week.
I hope you all have a fantastic week. Take Care.

ST JOSEPH’S PRIMARY SCHOOL
Year 5/6 at St Joseph’s in 2010 are back at school and ready to work! In our class this year we have 8 students in Year 5 and 6 students in Year 6. Our class is made up of Peita, James, Luke, Hamish, Bailey, Isabelle, Callum, Brydie, Austin, Georgia, Anastasia, Jacob, Jack, John and Mrs Frampton. School Leaders This year we have adopted a new model of leadership at St Joseph’s. Year 6 presented their leadership speeches to a large audience at our assembly on Thursday. Year 5 presented their leadership speeches to the rest of the school before the assembly. This year we have a mini governmental system operating where children are responsible for their own portfolio. We have the following portfolios operating in our school – Sport and Recreation Playground, Health and Safety Religion Social Welfare Public Relations and Communication Environment The Year 6 leaders have a noticeboard for important notices relating to their ministry and they report to the school community at assemblies and via the newsletter if they have any significant news for our school community. Each leader also has a number of responsibilities they will uphold throughout the year. We are pleased to announce the following Ministers have been elected – Minister for Religion – Anastasia Martin Minister for Sport and Recreation – Jacob
Medd Minister for Playground, Health and Safety –
Jack Inder Minister for Social Welfare – John Cronin Minister for Public Relations and
Communication – Georgia Cameron Minister for Environment – Isabelle Burge Year 5 leaders have also been elected as Assistant Ministers for their classmates. They will help to ensure all the responsibilities are maintained and they will step up to the role of Ministers when their Year 6 colleague is away. The following Year 5 children are Assistant Ministers for the portfolios. Sport and Recreation – Bailey McNaught and
Austin Constable Playground, Health and Safety – Callum Telfer
and Hamish Cameron Religion – Brydie Moore Social Welfare – James Hagley Public Relations and Communication – Peita Cassar Environment – Luke Cronin Year 6 Ministers were presented with their leadership badges at our Opening School Mass on Monday.
First Aid Last Thursday Year 4/5/6 were visited by Dee from the Australian Lifesaving Academy. She instructed the class in a Junior First Aid course. We learnt how to do CPR – Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation – and we have included some photos for you to see how we did this. We learnt where to push and how to push using your whole body. We also learnt how to stop bleeding, what to do if something is stuck in your body, what you need to tell the operator during an emergency call and how to deal with a snake bite. We discovered that you really should have your property number clearly displayed near the entrance to your property. This will assist Emergency Services to find your property more easily. We have noticed that there are many properties around Merriwa who do not have a property number clearly displayed. Displaying this number correctly could save your life or the life of someone you love - so you might want to do it soon! We also found out that every pool in Australia
needs to have a Resuscitation Chart displayed near
their pool. It would be a great idea to put it on the
fence so you can see it from the pool.

MERRIWA ACTIVITY CENTRE After School and Vacation Care
Catering for 5 – 12 year olds
MAC is well and truly back into the swing of things. It is so lovely to listen to the children as they tell us of their school day. Some have just started so it is all very new to them and others have returned to start a higher class with a new teacher. The children look so nice in their crisp, new uniforms and shiny shoes.
Vacancies We are pleased to report our numbers are excellent for this time of the year however we still have places left each day. Please remember our service is not just for working parents, it is for anyone. Quite a few of our children come to MAC purely for the social aspect as it is a great place to catch up with friends and do fun things.
What is MAC all about? For those that may be new to the area or to the whole school scene let us tell you a little about what MAC has to offer your child. We are a service that caters for 5 to 12 year old school children. The aim is to provide a place that is safe and enjoyable for your children to come to after the school day is over.
During the term the centre is open from 3 to 6pm (After School Care). Children that are booked in are met at the school by staff and escorted back to the centre via the school crossing. If children from St Josephs are to attend MAC they arrive at the central school via the Idaville bus and are also met outside the central school and walked to the centre. We follow a fairly loose routine each afternoon which starts off with about 20 minutes of homework. Those that do not have homework are asked to do a quiet activity such as reading, drawing, puzzles or a quiet game. What happens during the afternoon does depend a lot on the mood of the children for example; sometimes they are tired after sports day so we don’t even consider doing anything too active. The weather has also been a big factor in our plans for the afternoon, too hot or wet and we can’t play outside or go on our mini excursions.
At afternoon tea time we wash our hands and gather at the table. Fruit and water is served first and this is always followed by something delicious. Some of the yummy foods served to the children include homemade pizza, frankfurts in blankets and if we are really lucky a staff member makes delights such as mini quiche or bacon and corn fritters (thanks Jill). Sometimes this is followed by some slice or biscuits made by the children. The children then have some free time to do an activity of their choice. These activities can be construction, board games, crafts, in fact there is a wide selection of toys and activities to choose from. Generally around 5pm the children start to pack up so they can participate in some group activities, these are sometimes in the form of physical games such as ship to shore, murder wink, twister etc or perhaps we play card games or board games. When parents arrive the children are asked to help pack up and then put on their shoes, collect their arts and crafts and gather all their gear together. Regular children have a labelled pocket above the bag hooks in which notes, artwork and such is placed. Parents are asked to check their pocket regularly. Parents then sign their children out making note of departure time. If you are still unsure about certain aspects of MAC please don’t hesitate to talk to staff about it. Better still, have a chat to parents that use the service, I am sure you will hear lots of good things. Scone Grammar Students We are in the process of trying to organise for the Scone Grammar school bus to extend its route by approx. 600m. This would allow students who want to attend MAC to be dropped off in front of the centre. As it stands now, the bus drops all town children off in Vennacher Street (near the police station). This means any former or new MAC children must cross the main highway and walk

unsupervised to the centre. Of course this is not an ideal situation so Bronwyn Redgate and Jill have forwarded a letter to Osborne’s bus company outlining our request and emphasising how much of a safety risk the current situation is for our children. Osborne’s will then forward the letter to the Minister of Transport who will ultimately have the final say. So fingers crossed, we are hoping to see our friends back at MAC soon. First Aid Course Some of our staff are due to renew their first aid certificate. Could you please give us a call if you know of any courses coming up. We are hoping to attend one in Merriwa. Childcare Rebate Some parents have had concerns regarding their childcare rebate. If you require further information please do not hesitate to call our clerical staff Thursdays between 9am and 3pm. Michelle will be more than happy to answer your questions or point you in the right direction. Activity Centre CRN (Afterschool Care) is 55501702K and Vacation Care is 55501408J. There is also the potential for working mothers to receive up to 50% of the fees outlaid back in their tax returns. Did you know your child can attend MAC for as little as $3 per session? WORK BEGINS AT GUMMUN PLACE
Upper Hunter Shire Council has commenced the construction of the Activities Room for Gummun Place Hostel, Merriwa. The Residents and Staff of Gummun Place watched with excitement as the contractors began work on Friday 29 January 2010. “The Merriwa Aged Hostel Committee has been planning and expecting this day for a number of years. The committee has been fundraising during this time with annual market days and several street stalls and all the hard work has paid off.” said Cr Peebles. Cr Peebles is a member of the Hostel Committee and understands the benefit that this extension will bring to the hostel. “Local contractor Scott Witton Building from Cassilis was successful in obtaining the tender for the construction, several local sub contractors will also be used to complete the works, which is great for our local economy. The works are expected to be completed by the middle of 2010” Cr Watts said. The activities room will contain a consultation room for visiting medical professionals, as well as a kitchenette that will be used by the residents for cooking activities. The room will provide a great area for the residents to participate in planned activities, hold staff and resident meetings, social events for families and friends, church services or sing-alongs. Currently the activities are squeezed into the living area which causes a lot of disruption to the residents.

WOOLBROOK INDUSTRIES
While talking about our possible agricultural future, I said that the proportion of those involved in agriculture had been steadily declining over the years while that of those in cities had increased, one result being that the bush has lost much of the political power it once had. The matter of Peter Spencer, the man who has now abandoned his hunger strike, is a good example. While working overseas he had gradually accumulated some thousands of hectares to form one property near Cooma. Most of this had been cleared of timber in the past, however in his absence much of it had become partly covered with new growth. When he retired he discovered that legislation had been brought in to prevent him clearing any of this, and thus not only were his retirement plans shattered but the value of his property had been substantially reduced. This legislation, which effected not only Spencer but also all landholders, including this district, had been of great advantage to the Federal Government which, while it had not signed the Kyoto agreement, had committed itself to a reduction in carbon emissions. It failed to do this under what you or I might consider to be correct accounting, in fact over the period concerned Australia’s carbon emissions actually rose. However our Government none the less claimed it had met its target in reducing total emissions, though not from reduced emissions from power stations, or whatever, but from carbon reduction due to cessation of land clearing; that is, they claimed as a credit the carbon emissions which would have resulted from land clearing had it not been arbitrarily prohibited. If it been the Federal Government which enacted this legislation it would, under the Australian Constitution, have been bound to pay Peter Spencer compensation, however the land clearing legislation was a State matter where there is no such obligation, so neither the weasel Federal politicians (the Coalition at the time) nor the Sates had to pay anything and the following weasels in the Labor Government, when it came to power, were little more interested in righting this wrong than the Coalitition. Eventually Spencer was offered compensation but only at the post
legislation value, not the pre legislation one. That is, having destroyed the value of his property, he was offered its value after they had destroyed that value and he declined it. It is interesting that it was mostly written up in the media as though Spencer was protesting against land clearing. In fact he was not, he was protesting against lack of full compensation because he had been prohibited from clearing his land. Obviously the gain to both Federal Governments from this legislation, as opposed to upsetting a small proportion of voters, was such that politicians thought it worthwhile to enact this vicious legislation (Coalition) and do nothing to right the injustice when they came to power (Labor). Another example where politicians balance the political advantages is in heritage declarations on properties in both country and city. This will often eliminate much of the value of the property, but the possible loss of a few votes here against the possible gain of many votes from the Greens and conservationists is often considered to be of net political advantage. Those who feel it is all of no concern to them should remember that one day, in some way, it may be they too who will suffer. To change the subject a little, it has seemed to me that, while this district has done it tough weatherwise over much of the last ten years or so, we have led almost a charmed life compared to much of south east Australia and particularly the South West of NSW, northern Victoria and parts of South Australia. I have also observed, as in previous droughts, that whereas the Merriwa range country normally receives much greater rainfall compared to lower down, over that ten years it has often been less than ours, sometimes markedly so. I once remarked on this to Jim Edwards and he commented that his father had also noted it in the past and had always felt that whilever that situation prevailed, we were still in drought. The proponents of climate change, and those who prepare computer models based on the assumption that climate change will happen (is happening?), say some models suggest that some Australian areas will suffer reduced rainfall including much of Victoria and South Australia and the southern areas of NSW due to high pressure weather systems moving further north than in the past, i.e. from the

Great Southern Ocean north onto the southern Australian land mass. Are we already seeing signs of this? On the other hand, some models suggest other Australian areas will benefit and I have seen two reports lately (one by a Government Department, the other by the Department of Meteorology) indicating the Hunter Valley could be one of those benefiting. Are we already seeing signs of this too? Will being a coastal community help us? Of course it is too early by a long way to even decide whether what is happening at present is a sign of climate change or just normal variations in weather patterns, and indeed to be absolutely certain if climate change even exists and, if it does, whether it is responsible for these effects. I offer these thoughts not as predictions or anything like that, but simply as observations which you may find interesting.

MERRIWA PHARMACY Cold sores – the romance killers The true origins of Valentine’s Day seem to have been lost to antiquity. Numerous early Christian martyrs were called Valentine, but apparently no romantic elements were at-tached to their lives. There are claims that the first association be-tween Valentine’s Day and romance was refer-enced by Chaucer writing in the 14th century. In any event, there was a certain element of romance by the time Shakespeare wrote Ham-let in 1600. Paper Valentines, the beginnings of the Valen-tine Day cards, became popular in the early 1800s; so popular it was written that “St Val-entine’s Day” had virtually become a “national holy day” in the USA. Whilst around the time of Valentine’s Day 2010 our thoughts may still turn to romance, those romantic thoughts may not be so likely if you’re afflicted with an annoying cold sore. Your friends and family probably won’t find cold sores all that appealing either; a fact con-firmed by a survey conducted a few years ago by one of the pharmaceutical companies in-volved with the marketing of a cold sore relief cream. Cold sores were shown to be more off-putting than tinea, dandruff or even bad breath! In this warm summer weather, cold sores will be more common. Dry, burnt lips present the ideal conditions for a cold sore to break out. Nevertheless, there are effective products to treat cold sores and some excellent informa-tion from your local pharmacy on how to pre-vent them from occurring. Pharmacies which provide the Pharmaceutical Society’s Self Care health information have a recently updated “fact card” on cold sores. It tells you all you need to know, and more,
about these annoying little skin infections - what cold sores are, how they occur, what medicines help and how best to use them. Cold sores are caused by one of the viruses from the herpes family, known as herpes sim-plex (HSV). There are two types of HSV infec-tions. HSV-1 usually causes infections on the face, such as cold sores around the lips and nose, whereas HSV-2 usually causes genital herpes. Unfortunately, cold sores come back time after time because, as with all the herpes infections, the virus “hides” in the nerve cells in the skin at or near the original site. A range of triggers can then reactivate the virus to cause another cold sore – as well as sunburn, other triggers can include cold weather, fever, illness, and fatigue; in fact just about anything that puts our immune system under some stress. There are formulations containing so-called immune system boosters: ascorbic acid, zinc and the amino acid lysine; but there is little evidence to support the use of other herbal or vitamin products in the prevention and treat-ment of cold sores. Mild and occasional cases of cold sores can be treated with anaesthetic and analgesic oint-ments, creams and lotions. Topical antiviral preparations containing acyclovir or penciclovir will help if applied frequently and from the first sign of the lesion – that is when the itch or tingle is first noticed. Severe or recurrent cold sores respond well to oral antiviral medi-cations which are currently available as pre-scription products. Cold sores are easily transferred from person to person, and they can be particularly dan-gerous if caught by babies or people taking medicine that affects their immune system. Cold sores are not the kind of condition that you can kiss better – kissing’s a sure fire way of spreading them around. In fact kissing’s probably very much off the agenda anyway. With cold sores you’re almost certain to get the cold shoulder as well. There may be no permanent cure for cold sores, at least not yet (not even St Valentine has the answer); but you need to know how best to prevent them and how best to treat them when they do occur – Cold Sore fact cards are available at Merriwa Pharmacy.

MERRIWA SHOW NEWS Tuesday February 23 - don’t miss it!
Merriwa Springtime Show committee is calling its first 2010 meeting, for Tuesday February 23, 6.30pm at Merriwa RSL Club.
All members and interested parties are invited to come along and have a say - if you have a good idea then let’s hear it! We want to keep the momentum of last year’s great Show going strong.
Do you think we should have a chook section? Would you like to see pigs on show? You’re welcome to bring your ideas to the meeting.
Section leaders are particularly asked to be present, as early planning is essential.
Our Merriwa Young Farmers competition was brilliant in its first year and in 2010 organisers hope to extend it to include surrounding districts. This is putting Merriwa on the map. All credit goes to Mike Gilder and his team for a very professionally presented event.
Upgraded cattle yards at the Showground are essential if the Show is to reach its potential. This will also come up for action.
We will look at exciting new attractions and events (e.g. a Demolition Derby), and organising the 2010 Show Ball and Miss
Showgirl competition.
Unfortunately, we have to bid farewell to Iain and Kate Sommerlad who are leaving Merriwa. Iain is the vice-president of the Executive so this position will become vacant, and Kate’s role on the entertainment committee will also need to be filled. They have both given the Show extensive support during their time in Merriwa and will be greatly missed.
Remember, it’s your Show, Merriwa’s grassroots festival since 1908. Let’s give it a great start to 2010!

TRINITY MARKETS
Hello everyone, greetings from Trinity Markets - and hasn’t the rain been great? If only we could stop the weeds from growing . . . Our Summer Sale is now on! Fill a bag with clothing for just $5.00!! Ladies, gents, boys and girls, teens, toddlers, babies - find summer clothes for everyone, at bargain basement prices. Our motto is “Dress for Less”. Believe you me, it’s amazing what a plastic shopping bag will hold. One happy customer last week managed to fit 21 tops into her bag . . .admittedly some of them were small, but at $5.00 she went away delighted and came back the next day for sec-onds! That’s our aim - to turn over the stock fast, and make way for winter wear. So don’t leave it too long to make your move, or all the goodies will be gone. Many thanks to all those generous people who have donated goods over the past few weeks. Now’s the time to check out your winter ward-robe and make sure everything is still as wear-able as it was in 2009. If you don’t want that jumper, tracksuit or coat anymore, we can find them a new home. Why not drop them into the donations bin at the back of Trinity Markets shop, or bring them in in person? Or if you would rather they went out of town, leave them in the Samaritans bin near Holy Trinity church. Everything goes to a good cause. Trinity Markets is now open 9am to 12.30pm, Tuesdays to Saturdays.
At our meeting on February 2, we decided to hold working bees at the shop to change over summer to winter stock. The working bees are scheduled for Monday March 1, and again on March 8, starting at around 9.00am. Many hands make light work, so volunteers are asked, please leave your name at the shop with the day you would like to take part, or phone Enid on 6548 2948 or 0417 482 940. We have tidied up the roster system, to make life easier for our valuable volunteers. Please call in to the shop and collect your copy of the new arrangements, or if you wish we can email or post it to you, just let Enid know. They will also be on display on the notice-board in the back of the shop. The changes are to improve communications (we hope!) and avoid “double booking”. Finally, congratulations and thanks to one of our founding volunteers, Beryl Llewelyn, for her 20 years of service to Trinity Markets and the Merriwa community. Beryl, we’ll miss your cheerful presence in the shop and we wish you and Keith all the very best for the future.

MERRIWA TOURIST WELCOMING CENTRE Fundraising for Asthma Foundation Street Stall Friday 5 March Question: How many of us know what Asthma is and how serious a condition it can be?? I didn't! I always thought "OH Well, it is only Asthma! Nothing serious, just use a puffer and the problem will go away!" WRONG! People with asthma have sensitive airways in their lungs. When exposed to certain triggers their airways narrow, making it hard for them to breathe. Three main factors cause to airways to become narrow: 1. The inside lining of the airways becomes red and swollen (inflammation) 2. Extra mucas (sticky fluid) may be produced 3.The muscle around the airways tightens (bronchoconstriction) The Asthma foundation NSW is the consumer voice and advocate for those with asthma, and their families, it funds medical research to learn more about the causes, treatment and seek a potential cure of asthma. The Foundation is the largest independent funder of asthma research in Australia. It undertakes training and education programmes to improve the health of those with asthma and those at risk, and their families. It also develops and implements programmes to meet the needs of children. Older Australians, pregnant women and occupational asthma workers. The Asthma Foundation awarded Research Grants in 2009 totalling $236,000. All contributions and donations for this street stall will be gratefully accepted! Thank you.

Ladies Golf News Welcome back everyone. I am pleased to report that the lady golfers have been playing the summer competition with much enthusiasm over the last couple of months. The 8am hit off allowed us to get finished before the heat of the day on most occasions but a few 9 hole rounds were played on the hottest days over the summer. Congratulations to the girls who have been playing well, the presentation of the golf balls to all the successful players will happen at the conclusion of the summer competition. The official programme gets underway on the 3rd of March with our first meeting of the year to be held after golf. A reminder to everyone that we are still on 8am hit off for the month of March. We are looking forward to a great year of golf in 2010. There are plans a foot to attend as many Open Days in our region as we can in an effort to raise our profile. We have included some more events on our programme and we intend to continue to be the smallest but most active and enthusiastic lady golfers in the region. Good golfing everyone!

We travelled to Denman to play Denman 1. After losing the toss we were sent into the field. Nev and Brad opened the bowling. Nev finishing with 2/18 off 8 overs and Brad 3/20 off 8 overs Reg 3/12 off 8 overs and Will Osmond with one and a half overs. Bowling Denman 1 for 61 runs in 26 overs. Catches went to Murray Wright with two. A good throw from the out field by Jon Osmond to his brother Will who underarmed the ball hitting the top of the stumps completing a wonderful run out. G Tommer up (Rabbit) and Brad Strahan went into bat scoring the runs needed to help us to a 10 wicket win. We passed the score in 11 overs scoring 68 runs without losing any wickets. Rabbit was not out for 38 runs and Brad not out for 26 runs. Man of the match was Brad Strahan for his 3/20 and his 26 not out. Man of the match is sponsored by Osmonds Pump and Water solutions. Our next game is in Muswellbrook at Weidman Oval against South’s 1 on the 13/2/10. Thank you to our sponsors. Osmond's Pump and Water Solutions, Merriwa Sports Club,
