Kindergarten - Corin

Wow what an amazing start to Kindergarten

we have had! The students in Corin Unit

have settled well into the routine of Duffy

Primary School. Their bright, smiling faces

and positive attitudes has ensured we have

had successful days at school.

We have been busy learning our school

values of Respect, Responsible and Inclusive.

We read The Rainbow Fish and talked about

how being inclusive means to share, care, let

people play with us and to be nice to

someone. We then read Giraffes Can’t Dance

and talked about how to be respectful to

others. We are always responsible for our

belongings and for making sure we are

showing our listening bodies.

Phew! There is a lot to remember but we are

doing well because we are helping each oth-

er!

Thanks - Kindergarten Team

Preschool

Our beautiful preschool children have had a great start to 2015! On the whole they have settled in very quickly with only a few teary drop offs which quickly subside with a bit of TLC. The Bilby and Joey students are already becoming familiar with the daily routines such as washing their hands on arrival and before and after eating, and so far have been super enthusiastic about helping pack away!

The preschool children are also beginning to learn about the school values and how these apply in preschool. For example the children are learning:

We look after ourselves, We look after each other, We look after our preschool & We look after our world

These concepts are included in many ways throughout the year, including: playing games; reading stories; through modelling by staff; routine practices such as recycling; speaking and listening opportunities; intentional interactions; and explicit teaching.

These concepts are in line with our preschool philosophy where we believe our students are capable of reflecting upon and making decisions about things that involve them. We aim to provide a secure, respectful and nurturing environment for all of our students and encourage them to see the value in themselves and others.

Crunch Time – New Procedure

Each morning can you please assist your child to place their named fruit/vegetable snack for Crunch Time in the separate basket provided. This will help the children to understand which food may be eaten at each meal time throughout the day.

Please note we have 2 students who are anaphylactic to nuts, egg and dairy, so we ask that you please do not bring any food containing nuts to preschool. There is a separate mat for students to eat their cheese and yogurt on; if you could let your child know if they have cheese or yogurt in their lunchbox this would be very helpful.

Take Home Pockets

Your child now has a pocket outside their classroom. The children’s artwork and notes will be placed in these to be taken home. We will also be encouraging the children to keep their hats in these pockets and they may be left at school ensuring your child always has a hat for outdoor play.

Term 1 Week 2 - Thursday, 12 February

Griffin students have been settling into their new routine,

welcoming our new students and learning what good and bad

choices at school are. Below are some of the many good

choices our students make.

Steph Martin and Shae Souden

Working independently

Watering plants

Climbing on the playground

equipment Digging in the garden

Participating in gross

motor activities

Year One - Cotter

Welcome to a brand new and exciting year in Year 1’s Cotter Circus. Over the first 2 weeks, we have been busily getting to know each other and learning about our school values: Respect, Responsible and Inclusive.

RESPONSIBLE

We are responsible at home and at school. We modelled different ways to be responsible at school, such as putting rubbish in the bin, zip-ping up my bag, lunch box away and reporting issues to teachers.

INCLUSIVE

We are inclusive and work together in teams. One of our activities to practise being inclusive was to work together to stretch a rubber band to pick up a cup. We learnt that everyone has to play their part for the activity to work.

RESPECT

We are respectful students. Part of showing re-spect is to use our manners. We identified differ-ent ways to show manners, such as not inter-rupting, saying please and thank you and listen-ing to what others have to say.

We are looking forward to a great year,

The Year 1 team,

Kirrily Bearse, Caprice Morris and Jamie Walkden

Term 1 Week 2 - Thursday, 12 February

Year Two - Bendora Wow, what a busy two weeks we have

had settling into year 2. We named our

classes as we realised that both class

teachers had the same beginning letter for

their surname. So students who are with

Ms Symonds are called the ‘Wise owls’

and students who are with Miss Strugnell

are called the ‘Superheros’.

During the week we also looked at our

three values, respect, responsible and

inclusive. We looked at how to be

responsible by putting our lunch boxes

away and being in the right place at the

right time.

We also looked at what the word respect

means, which is to care about someone

and show that you like them and how to

include others into your game and be

inclusive of everybody in the school

community.

5

Year Three / Four - Scrivener Year Five / Six - Googong During weeks 1 and 2 we have been revising

and practising the school values respect,

responsible and inclusive. We have been

participating in a number of Circle Time

activities to help us remember and demon-

strate our values. We created a garden of

respect, collaborated in small groups to write

about our responsibilities and watched a short

clip on how to be inclusive.

Have a gooooooog week!!!

Term 1 Week 2 - Thursday, 12 February

Welcome to a new and exciting year in our amazing Scrivener Unit. Students have started the New Year with enthusiasm and are settled and ready to learn! We are look-ing forward to a fun-filled and productive year.

To start the term off students across the unit have been revisiting the school values of RESPECT, RESPONSIBLE and INCLUSIVE. We have discussed and refreshed our minds about what each of these values looks like, sounds like and feels like at school and in our everyday lives.

Check out some of the lovely

representations we made about the school

values…

Enviro Centre with Mr. Pratt

Waste not, teach about it instead. Classes across the school have had their first lessons for the year about waste, and ways we try to manage it. Currently we do quite well with less than a third of the waste we generate going to landfill. Another half or so goes to recycling and an astounding number of apples cores and food scraps heads to the worms,

chickens and compost. We ‘recycle’ of around 50kg of food waste a week.

We can do even better! Kindergarten are leading the way with their use of waste stations and we are looking forward to the first unit to win the Golden Bin award for 2015 at this week’s assembly. Thanks for the year 4 students checking the waste stations a few times each week. Thanks also to Alice in the Front Office for her quick ordering of soil, straw and tanbark. It will help grow, protect and decorate beautifully.

Classes have also started discussing their preferred animal purchases for this year (looks like a rabbit and a guinea pig so far). We are still looking for a donation of a large fish tank so Mr Pratt can stock it with all the animals from the farm dam! If you’ve got a fish tank laying around unloved, please let me know.

Mr Pratt and his helpers will be selling produce at Monday WOW and each assembly. Please bring along some cash for items grown with love from the school kitchen garden! All money collected goes toward buying more items to sell.

This is the first call out for anyone interested in taking home a guinea pig, or eventually a new rabbit. If you are interested in caring for an animal for a weekend, please let me know.

Thanks again,

Greg

Swimming Carnival

The swimming carnival (for students 8years before 31/12/2015) will be held at

Lakeside Leisure Centre in Tuggeranong on Tuesday 10 March. We have

made some changes to our program such that there will be no 100metre events. Swimmers who

would like to be considered for these events at the district carnival should either submit club

times or see Steph Martin in the Griffin Unit to organise time trials on the morning of the

carnival. Spare notes are available from the front office.

Term 1 Week 2 - Thursday, 12 February

A big welcome from the Duffy Primary P&C to all new and returning families to Duffy Primary for

2015. We hope that your children are all settling happily into their school routine and are looking

forward to a fabulous educational experience this year.

Community Event – Welcome BBQ Thursday 19 February

The P&C will be hosting a community BBQ from 5:30–7pm on Thursday, 19th February to welcome all parents/carers,

students and teachers to the new school year. This is a great opportunity meet and/or catch up with other parents/carers and

students from across the school. We hope you can join us for a free sausage on the blacktop!

P&C Communications – Stay-In-Touch

The P&C has its own website, facebook page, and mailing list that we use to communicate upcoming events, fundraising

opportunities, P&C meetings, and current topics of interest. These communications are separate to the school’s newsletter

and facebook page posts and we encourage all parents/carers to sign-up to these P&C communication channels to stay

up-to-date with P&C events and activities.

Website: www.duffypandc.org.au

Facebook: search for "Duffy Primary Parents and Citizens Association". Don't forget to "Like" the page and select

"Get notifications" (drop down list on the like button) to make sure you see all the posts.

Mailing List: The join our mailing list link is on the front of the P&C website. If you have any trouble signing up, you can also

email [email protected] and ask to be added.

Notice of Annual General Meeting (AGM) and First General Meeting for 2015

The P&C AGM will be held on Wednesday 25 February at 7pm in the school library, followed immediately by the first general

meeting for the year. The agendas will be available from our website two days prior to the meetings, and if you have any

items you would like to add to the general meeting agenda please email them to [email protected] by 5pm Friday

20 February.

We will be electing a new Executive Committee for the upcoming school year at the AGM – the positions below are office

bearers of the P&C and will attend the majority of P&C meetings (two per term) and are occasionally called upon to make

quick "out of session" decisions in-between meetings.

Being an office bearer in the P&C is a rewarding experience as you get to work closely with the Executive teaching staff and

help decide the focus for fundraising activities and community events.

The office bearer Executive Committee positions for 2015 are:

President - The President's role is to chair all P&C meetings and represent the P&C within the school community.

Secretary - The Secretary is responsible for keeping records of all in-coming and out-going communications and take and

distribute minutes of all general meetings.

Treasurer - The Treasurer is responsible to keep a record of and report on all monies spent and received. They are to

prepare and present all material to the Auditor and present the Audited Financial Statements at the AGM.

Vice-President, Assistant Secretary, Assistant Treasurer - These roles are to support the primary position and act in their

role in their absence.

Preschool Representative - The Preschool Representative is a conduit for the Preschool Teachers to put forward specific

ideas about the needs of the Preschool Unit. The role includes the coordination of the end of year celebration for the

Preschool Unit.

Fundraising Committee Coordinator - This role is responsible for coordinating fundraising efforts. We are looking for a

passionate and enthusiastic person to investigate and pursue fundraising opportunities for Duffy Primary School.

Grants Officer - This is a new role we are looking to establish for a member with experience or an interest in writing grant

applications. There are many government grants available within the ACT and we need a person to assist in seeking these

out and writing submissions.

P&C Council Delegate - This position represents Duffy Primary P&C at the ACT Council of P&C's meetings (two per term)

and provides an update back to the P&C on topics of interest.

Other Executive Committee positions are:

Ordinary Members - Up to three “Ordinary Members" may also be elected to the Executive Committee. While not having an

office bearer responsibility, these positions assist and promote the objectives of the Duffy Primary P&C and participate in P&C

run events.

I look forward to seeing many of you at the welcome BBQ and also the first P&C meeting.

Cheers,

Graeme Loaney, P&C President

Term 1 Week 2 - Thursday, 12 February

Getting ready By Raising Children Network - http://raisingchildren.net.au/

Getting your children ready for school or to leave the house can be a challenge. Here’s a fun

way to encourage them to cooperate.

Do you find yourself nagging and shouting a lot in the mornings? Try ‘Beat the buzzer’, a game developed by re-searchers from RMIT University, Victoria.

The key to this game is rewarding your child for being on time and ready. Praising your child will make an enor-

mous difference. Parents often don’t feel like praising their child for being ready on time because it’s behaviour

that is expected. But if you don’t praise it, don’t expect it!

How to play 'Beat the buzzer'

Explain that you want to introduce a game called ‘Beat the buzzer’ to help with getting ready in the mornings. Establish a ‘ready time’ – your child must be ready for school at this time. Together, write a list of what your child needs to do in the morning. With younger children, you do the writing, but ask them to help you draw a picture for each step. Explain exactly what you expect children to do on their own and what you will help with. The list might look something like this: Eat breakfast.

Get dressed.

Brush teeth/wash face/brush hair.

Pack bag.

Put on jacket/hat/shoes.

When you have a list that you’re both happy with, put it up where your child can check it throughout the morning. Explain to your child what will happen if he is ready on time, and what will happen if he isn’t. Choose some special rewards for beating the buzzer. Make up a simple chart to keep track of success with ticks or

stickers. Activities with mum or dad are often the most effective rewards. Choose some appropriate consequences for not being ready. Set the timer and leave your child to it. Let her know that you have set the kitchen timer for the required amount of time. Now it’s up to her. Watch for your child being independent and responsible. Praise and encourage him. But avoid giving reminders and instructions – this will just lead you back to nagging and fighting. If your child gets all the tasks done by the time the buzzer sounds, she wins.

Encourage your child to check the list rather than telling him what to do next. This will help him become more independent. It also reduces nagging from you.

After a week or two of success, begin to phase out the rewards over another 3-4 weeks. Your child might

need to be on time two, three, four, then five days in a row to earn the reward (make the reward a little bigger each time). Then make rewards a surprise. Your child won’t know when a reward is on offer – it just happens every now and then.

Even when your child is regularly ready on time, praise her occasionally.

When your child is not ready

If at the end of the time your child isn’t ready:

Calmly let him know that the buzzer has sounded, and get him ready.

Remind her that she can try again the following morning.

Follow through with the consequence you decided on.
