Association of Residency Coordinators in Surgery Association for Surgical Education

Dear Colleagues: Surgical Education Week (April 8-12, 2014) will occur in downtown Chicago this spring for meetings at the Fairmont Chicago Hotel. The 2014 Joint Meeting of the APDS and ASE focuses our attention on the multiple opportunities and challenges of surgical education in the changing health care environment which provides a wealth of new opportunities and challenges. Please block off April 8-12 now and begin to make your flight reservations. Karen Deveney, Ranjan Sudan and Mary Burda have done a terrific job in crafting creative educational components for our program. On Monday, April 7, the APDS will again offer the APDS Program Directors Workshop, spearheaded by Course Directors Alfred Chahine and Benjamin Jarman, an optional opportunity which most Program Directors find to be an indispensable element of Surgical Education Week. This program runs from 8:00 am on Monday morning until 11:30 am Tuesday and brings together key materials (plus a very valuable syllabus/workbook in electronic format) as well as practical experience, advice, and insights, and is equally appropriate for new Program Directors as well as serving as a refresher course for experienced PDs. The APDS starts things off this year on Tuesday at 12:00 noon with Paper Session #1 followed by the “What is New: ABS, ACGME, ACS, RRC and SCORE Panel”. A panel on the “Role of Residents in Mass Casualties: What Can Be Learned” will follow and Tuesday will conclude with a second paper session. Wednesday morning opens with Paper Session #3 followed by Dr. John Mellinger’s Presidential Address and a panel on “The Challenge of Fostering Resident Autonomy”. Wednesday afternoon offers attendees two APDS workshop discussions from among twelve different options, the fourth paper session, and an additional panel on the topic “The Appropriate Role of Associate Program Directors”. Thursday morning, the joint APDS/ASE program day begins with the fifth APDS Paper Session, followed by the Keynote Address from Bob Doll, Chief Equity Strategist & Senior Portfolio Manager, Nuveen Asset Management, to discuss “Character Matters”. The Keynote Address will be followed by a fifth paper session and panel on “Milestones in Action: Experience of Some Early Adopters.” The ARCS program starts Monday morning with the ARCS New Coordinators’ Workshop. The main ARCS program begins Tuesday morning with the ARCS Business Meeting and a session on “Why Join the Executive Committee” followed by the ARCS Keynote Speaker, Greg Risberg. Dr. James Hebert and Peggy Simpson will then give RRC and ACGME updates followed by the Professional Development Session “Getting a 2nd Chance” , a session on “Modernizing the Interview Process for the Preliminary Candidate” and a breakout session. The ARCS Welcome Reception will be held on Tuesday evening. Wednesday morning features TAGME and SCORE updates and the APDS Presidential Address. The afternoon program begin with ‘Holding them Accountable: Encouraging Professional Habits without Hand Holding” followed by two breakout sessions. The day concludes with a second Professional Development session and “ABS Update.” The Joint APDS, ARCS, ASE Reception is Wednesday night. Thursday morning begins with two breakout sessions “3 Things You Should Know About FSC” and “Clinical Competency Committee” followed by the APDS Keynote Address and concludes with the session “Chattanooga Surgery – Adversity and Change”. The ASE will offer four special pre-meeting workshops on Wednesday, April 9 – “Fundamentals of an Academic Career in Surgery Education”, “Use of Surgical Educators to Impact High School Students”, “Troubleshooting Your Clerkship 104” and “Introduction to Educational Research”. The ASE program begins officially Thursday afternoon with “Thinking Out of the Box” luncheon. The remainder of the afternoon will feature the “What’s New in Surgical Education” presentation by Debra DaRosa, PhD, and two paper sessions. The Friday morning session begins with two Paper Sessions and two Mini-Oral sessions, the J. Roland Folse Lectureship and then the ASE Presidential Address. Friday afternoon gives attendees the opportunity to attend one of nine ASE workshop offerings, including topics on “Implementation of a National Surgical Core Curriculum”, “Developing a Curriculum on Social Responsibility for Surgical Learners”, “Staying SHARP: Best Practices for Effective Debriefing in Surgery” and the “SERF Forum.” A panel on ASE Collaborations and Initiatives plus the ASE Business Meeting will follow. Friday concludes with the “Celebrating Educational Scholarship” ASE Banquet. The ASE meeting will conclude at noon on Saturday with a Paper Session, a Mini-Oral Presentation session and panel on “Global Health Initiatives”. Registration details are enclosed—you can register for one group’s meeting or choose the single fee option which entitles you to attend any and all APDS, ARCS, or ASE events from Tuesday noon through Saturday. Separate registration is needed for the APDS Program Directors' Workshop, the ARCS New Coordinators’ Workshop, the ASE Fundamentals of an Academic Career in Surgery, ASE Surgical Educators to Impact High School Students, ASE Troubleshooting Your Clerkship 104 and ASE Introduction to Educational Research and ASE Thinking Out of the Box Luncheon.
