Laaste eerbetoon: Kaptein Henry Visagie

Hy was lewenslustig, spitsvondig en ‘n regte terggees. Henry was sonder pretensie en het altyd gesê: “What you see, is what you get”.

Sy suster se kinders was sy hart se punt. Rudi se begrafnisdiens sal plaasvind by Aasvoëlkrans buite Rustenburg op 19 Junie.

A CRY FOR HELPRustenburg – Lorraine Mienie and Christelle Goosen are yet to fully recover from the shock and trauma that comes with losing everything to a raging fire. Mienie and her daughter-in-law (Christelle) were helpless on Wednesday 16 June as the fire, of which the cause is still unknown, destroyed their home at number 45 Leyds Street in Rustenburg East. A distraught Mienie told Platinum Weekly: “We lost everything. Our furniture, blankets, clothes… everything. Our animals also died in the fire. It was terrible!” The unexpected loss was a devastating blow to Christelle, who is heavily pregnant. She is now counting her losses after all the things she had bought in preparation for the arrival of a new member to her family went up in smoke.“I can’t wait to meet my grandson. Christelle is due to deliver the baby in about eight weeks. We need baby clothing,

a cot, blankets, towels, and baby formula,” Mienie explained.Thankfully, businesspeople and members of the Rustenburg community have started helping the family with money and groceries. An anonymous donor gave the family R1,000 cash and a R1,000 Ackermans voucher. Food Lover’s Market Rustenburg also donated groceries to assist the family while Staan Saam Rustenburg have also pledged to help. “We always try to give back to the community,” Food Lover’s Market Rustenburg manager Steven Mulder said. “We must do all we can to care for our community. We encourage other businesses to also chip in and help where they can.”Anyone who would like to assist is requested to contact Lorraine Mienie on 062 262 6812 or Lezann Erasmus on 061 019 6870.

ZINNIAVILLE ELECTRICITY OUTAGE SPARKS PROTESTZinniaville/ Rustenburg – A two-day power failure in parts of Zinniaville and Karlien Park caused community members to embark on a protest. On Saturday 12 June, an angry group of protestors brought traffic to a standstill at the railway crossing on the road from Rustenburg North to Zinniaville. The protestors – who said they had gone for two days without electricity – placed rocks, burning tyres, and tree branches at the four-way stop and made it impossible for traffic to pass through. During the protest, they loudly clamoured for electricity to be restored.

The arrival of the police, after about two hours, led to the dispersion of the protestors who feared being arrested. Police, personnel from the Rustenburg Department of Public Safety, as well as passers-by eventually cleared the road to enable traffic to pass through.Power utility Eskom has been implementing load-shedding across many parts of the country. “The situation is being made worse by some people who are connecting electricity illegally because this trips the system and causes power outages,” said a disgruntled Karlien Park community member.

Let’s resolve this issue

Zinniaville/Rustenburg – For some time now the Platinum Weekly has been reporting on the Zinniaville community who want their dignity restored. They want to work and live in an area which is not revolting. Not only are they fed up of being ignored for years on end about the situation which they not only find inhumane, they are scared it might affect their health. It is high time that the powers that be find amicable solutions to their situation. They don’t want the people working at the Rainbow processing plant to lose their jobs, they just want the unacceptable stinky situation resolved. And they want it resolved peacefully, unlike the voice note left on a public group of a person opposing their demands, threatening “don’t make us take out our AK47s”.According to information received the Rainbow processing plant was supposed to shut down on Friday 11 June 2021, due to environmental non-compliance. Apparently, the Bojanala Platinum District Municipality’s (BPDM) municipal manager ordered the shutdown to be suspended. In a letter drafted by a representative of the Zinniaville community it reads: ‘The Zinniaville community is thwarted at every turn by the apparent alliance between certain officials of the Bojanala Platinum District Municipality (BPDM) and RCL/ Rainbow. Having started the latest bout of their campaign to clean up RCL/ Rainbow in April, the BPDM inspectors meticulously followed every procedure and process to give RCL/ Rainbow the opportunity to clean up their act and fulfil their regulatory Duty of Care.”However, RCL/ Rainbow apparently did not comply with the terms laid out in a notice and on Friday 11 June, the plant was meant to be shut down due to persistent non-compliance.“To the utter surprise of disheartened inspectors, they saw four months of work unilaterally and casually discarded because of the actions of the Bojanala acting municipal manager Tshepo Bloom, who unilaterally ordered the shutdown to be suspended,” the letter reads.Discussions between community lawyers and municipal officials, including the head of the legal department, agreed that the executive mayor and municipal manager would address

the issue with the community on Monday 14 June at 19h30 at the Zinniaville Sports Ground. However, they reneged on this commitment later the day and said that they would send representatives. The community then decided to cancel the meeting as it would have been a waste of time, not meeting with the decision makers. Community members who demanded an explanation went to the Bojanala district municipal offices but were refused access to either the executive mayor councillor Fetsang Molosiwa, or the municipal manager. After some time, they received a message that they cannot meet with them due to Covid. It was further also suggested the community should perhaps take the legal route, rather than sorting it out face-to-face. The communities affected are now set to institute legal proceedings to uncover how, why, and on what merits this unilateral overturning of just administration was carried out by the Bojanala municipal officials.

Spearheading the community initiative for clean air, tireless campaigner Soyab Bham of the Zinniaville Ratepayers Association said he knows that the community is in for a long and difficult challenge to get the serial-polluters who have been arrogantly persisting for thirty years to stop.

“We will use all means at our disposal to stop this criminal action, starting by digging into how exactly approvals were granted with no participation from their community,” he said. “Further negotiations between the parties have broken down as the community believes the invitation presented by the municipality for communities to take the legal route means the municipality has no intention of complying with its own legal notice and must be compelled to do so. And this is the instruction we have given to our legal team.”

A voice note threatening the lives of the Zinniaville community because they dare to stand up for their cause, was also widely circulated on social media.

...taking all the parties involved into consideration

Traffic could only pass through after the road was cleared.

Angry protestors barricaded the road with burning tyres and rocks.

The fire caused extensive damage to the house.

Lorraine Mienie lost just about all of her belongings.

Six of the bodies were discovered at an old unused mine shaft in Lawarence park on Tuesday 14 June while a further 14 were found near the railway line along Ariston Road. “The deceased are suspected to be illegal miners commonly known as ‘zama zamas’ operating in obsolete shafts in Orkney and Stilfontein. Furthermore, the deceased suffered severe body burns,” police spokesperson brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone said. “As part of investigations, post-mortems will be

conducted to determine the causes of death for these men whose bodies were found wrapped in white plastic bags,” he added. Police investigations will also explore whether or not the death of these men could be linked to a video widely circulating on social media platforms in which a man draws attention to a smoke inhalation incident at a mine shaft while pleading for help.

The police are requesting anyone with information to contact colonel Gaanakgomo on 082 568 5975, or SAPS Crime Stop number on 08600 10111. Anonymous tip-offs can also be communicated via My SAPS App.

Six decomposing bodies were found in Orkney.

Another fourteen bodies were found near a railway line.

Three Star empowers new business ownerRustenburg – Boipelo Sepeng became a young female entrepreneur when she won a Spaza shop in Three Star’s Win-a-Spaza competition on Saturday 12 June. The prize – valued at R150 000 – consists of a container with stock so that she can start her own business and sell stock to her community. To enter the competition, all she had to do was to buy products up to the value of R1500 including five participating products, complete the entry form and put it in the box. Three Star general manager Raymond Phatlane then had the honour of drawing six names from a box. Each person received a key and had to attempt to open the lock to a cardboard container. Boipelo got the winning key and the crowed rejoiced as the lock opened. The other five did not leave empty handed as they all received a Sunbeam compact oven. A few customers also walked away with hampers and other items to celebrate the occasion.Beni Mpofu, the 2020 Win-a-Spaza winner who managed to triple his earnings with his spaza shop also attended the event.Three Star Powertrade is open to the public and no buying card is required. Instructions

This easy to make, moist chocolate cake, is probably the most craved recipe in any home. Rustenburg community member Akira Hussain shared her family recipe…

Whenever I whip up this cake, my family always come running for a taste. My grandmother, who is the best cook I know, shared this recipe with me. She often sends a recipe for me to try via WhatsApp. Give this one a try – you won’t be disappointed!

PS – Ganache is made using 160g dairy milk chocolate and 155g Nestle cream. You simply

melt the chocolate, add the cream, and mix well.

I’VE BEEN

SCAMMED[Letter to the editor]

I lost my job a few years ago and due to various financial struggles, I eventually got blacklisted. It took me a while to get back on my feet, but I am gainfully employed now, and things were looking up until a situation arose where I urgently needed money. Having no other option, I had to turn to a loans company to assist. Unfortunately, my past debt still lingers and because I was blacklisted, my loan was denied. However, one of the employees of the loans company told me that if I pay R4,500 he will be able to get my loan approved. Desperate, I scraped together every cent I had and paid it over to him… turns out it was a scam!It has been almost three months now, and not only do I still not have the money I so desperately needed, but I also lost R4,500. I have tried reporting it to the police but was informed that because it was a verbal agreement, I don’t have a foot to stand on. Please be careful and make sure to rather go to reputable companies and don’t fall for these shady loan sharks.Bitten by a Loan Shark

It’s called a STOP sign for a reason![Letter to the editor]

Rustenburg – A stop sign is a traffic sign designed to notify drivers that they must come to a complete stop and make sure the intersection is safely clear of vehicles and pedestrians before continuing past the sign. First come first serve is the general rule when stopping at a four-way stop. However, it seems like Rustenburg drivers have decided that the stop signs in our town are mere suggestions. The people either completely ignore it. The people that use the Kroondal road slack off just enough, so that they don’t hit the other car too hard should you collide. You are supposed to stop and wait for your turn. It doesn’t mean that if the person takes too long that you can take his turn. We are not playing Rummy Cup; people’s lives are at stake. In Bo-Dorp we have a few roads that cross with two-way stops, but as a general rule I slow down when I pass these crossings just in case some jerk decides that the stop sign does not apply to him or her. I know of a man who was rear-ended

three times in one year because he dared to come to a complete standstill. His insurance premium skyrocketed because he is a law-abiding citizen. It makes me so angry when people do this that, when I see someone trying to drive out

of turn, I get spiteful, making sure that I take my turn extra slow just

to force them to wait those extra two seconds which they seemingly did not have to spare. Next time I see you in my rear-view mirror speeding towards me, hoping to skip the stop sign I

will turn into a learner driver, take my car out of gear, check

all my mirrors, look left, look right, look left again, put my car in first

gear and then only drive on – because that is what the law says I have to do.So next time you see the sign with the words STOP on it – please follow the rules of the road and STOP. Are those two seconds really worth that extra money on your insurance premium or even your life?

I stop at Stop Signs

Paying it forward

Food parcels were handed out by Al Imdaad Rustenburg.

Phokeng/ Rustenburg – On Wednesday 16 June, the Al Imdaad Rustenburg team gave blankets and food parcels to Lenient Children’s Centre and an old age home. Both

Popular doggy spa rebuilt Rustenburg – On Saturday 13 March, Sharloms YorkitiQue Doggy Spa owner Christelle Pretorius burst into tears while watching everything she had worked so hard for going up in flames. Her heart sank as the spa, located along the Old Pretoria Road just outside Rustenburg, was reduced to rubble in what was later established to be an act of arson. The destruction of the spa, a pooch pampering facility that had become popular in Rustenburg and surrounding areas, was a huge blow to her.Pretorius is also a dog breeder and fortunately her Yorkshire Terriers, Pit Bulls

and her other dogs which were located in a separate structure, sustained no injuries during the fire. With the damage estimated at around R400,000, community members took it upon themselves to help Pretorius reconstruct the doggy spa which also had a lot of sentimental value to all of them. After several weeks of reconstruction, the spa finally reopened its doors for business on Saturday 29 May. Pretorius and Willa Breitenbach are very grateful to everyone who helped them in the reconstruction of the spa, which re-opened under the new name ‘Little Paris For Paws’.

10Jesus answered and said to him, “Are you the teacher of Israel, and do not know these things? 11Most assuredly, I say to you, We speak what We know and testify what We have seen, and you do not receive Our witness. 12If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man who is in heaven. 14And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. 16For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

For some people, getting out of bed in the morning feels like an almost impossible task, while others rise with a smile and a song in their hearts.

Are you a morning person?

Have your say / Sê jou sê

No! Especially not on weekends. As a proud mother, my body needs that extra bit of

recovery time, so I often struggle to

get out of bed.

I would say both. It sometimes

depends on the weather, how late

I went to bed, or I might have

something planned for the day…

But some days I snooze at least

three times before dragging myself

out of bed.

Morné enjoyed Joburg Classic

IMPALA EYE THIRD WIN

Morné du Plessis competed in the Joburg Classic.

Rugby – Impala Rugby Club will be aiming for a third victory – in as many matches – when they face Eersterust on Saturday 19 June in a Carleton Reserve League encounter. The Rustenburg-based club, who have managed to win two of their opening matches, will enjoy the advantage of playing in the familiar surroundings of the Impala Rugby Stadium. There will be no supporters at the venue due to the implementation of strict COVID-19 regulations that govern sporting activities. However, this is unlikely to dampen the spirits of a group of Impala players who believe they have what it takes to cruise to a victory that would see them assuming the top spot on the League table. Head coach Joel Scherman believes the impressive performance of the first and second teams in their matches against Atteridgeville and Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) makes his players favourites to win on Saturday. On Saturday 5 June, Impala’s second

team registered a resounding 41-0 win over the Atteridgeville second team. Not to disappoint, the Impala first team went on to record a 48-0 victory over Atteridgeville’s first team. On Saturday 12 June, both Impala teams were on the winning side once again in

their matches against TUT. The second team recorded a 26-

12 win, while the first team powered to a 41-31 victory.Scherman – who together with Sydney Venter and Justin St. Jerry are at the forefront of rebuilding the first and second teams – is

confident of another positive showing.

“Our first team is currently second on the log and I am happy with

the way that both teams have played,” Scherman told Platinum Weekly. “We have improved significantly. This is what makes us confident of securing victory against Eersterust on Saturday. If we win then we will go to the top of the log and this is a huge inspiration for any player.”

Rustenburg – Rustenburg Cycling Club’s (RCC) juniors are continuing to make a positive impression in the competitions they are taking part in. The RCC is very proud of Morné du Plessis for representing the juniors well during the Joburg Classic, which took place in Randburg on Saturday 12 June. Competing in the u/17 boys age group, du Plessis put in a brave effort during the tough 60km race. He finished 9th out of a total of twelve cyclists and thoroughly enjoyed the experience of testing his skills against the other competitors.

UITSLAE• Waratahs 7 - 41 Chiefs• Blues 31 - 21 Western Force• Rebels 26 - 52 Crusaders• Brumbies 12 - 33 Highlanders

Go Bulle! So terloops...
