Active Bleeding Control Project – GVK EMRI

Dear Colleagues,

We are happy to present to you the latest edition of GVK World.

T2, our iconic structure completed five years of exceptional operations and passenger service on February 14, 2019. The excellent facilities provided along with the impressive service rendered by the entire staff of GVK MIAL along with all the stakeholders working inside and outside T2 has catapulted its popularity across the world. The implementation of latest technologies has made the terminal most favoured among those visiting Mumbai.

The Jaya He GVK New Museum continues to be in the news with the foreign media now gradually beginning to take note of this one-of-it’s-kind unique offering inside an international airport terminal. In this issue, we have reproduced an excerpt from the New York Times.

Our pioneering endeavour in emergency management services, GVK EMRI launched an Active Bleeding Control Programme at Hyderabad which is aimed at making people aware about measures to stop uncontrolled bleeding in the event of any mishap and prevent fatalities. This programme will be conducted in phases over the next three years.

At GVK, we lay a great emphasis on safety. Towards this, GVK MIAL organized a runway safety seminar, wherein experts from across the country deliberated upon the importance of maintaining safety and taking precautionary measures.

The January to March quarter had its quota of festivals and celebrations which included the Republic Day, International Women’s Day and Holi besides commemorating National Safety Day by conducting programmes across verticals. Awards and employee recognition have also been featured in this issue.

To conclude, we would like to thank everyone for your continuing invaluable contribution.

Happy Reading!

Teamwork and dedication of staff are the key at T2 for bringing in awards and encomiums

The Terminal 2 of GVK CSMIA completed five glorious years

of operations on February 14, 2019. The iconic structure, popularly known as T2, has been the jewel in Mumbai’s crown ever since it began operations and has over the years, bagged numerous awards for its state-of-the-art architecture, efficient and quality service to the passengers/stakeholders and user-friendly facilities.

While the teamwork from other stakeholders has been crucial in making T2 one of the favourite terminals, it is the never-say-never attitude of GVK MIAL’s staff when it comes to rendering

services to the passengers that stands out today. The teams from Terminal Operations, Airside Operations, Landside, Safety and Security, Aero Marketing and Commercial, Hospitality, Facilities etc have been working round-the-clock to ensure that the service quality and punctuality is maintained. To top it all, the advancements in information technology services give an upper hand while introducing passenger-friendly initiatives.

This combination of promptness and dedication from the staff as well as stakeholders helped increase the On-Time Performance (OTP) of aircraft flying in and out of Mumbai. GVK MIAL also undertook various initiatives to improve the OTP which included measuring the time taken for carrying out each activity by the airline with a view to optimize the aircraft turnaround time. These activities covered establishing regular contact with the pilot, connection of aerobridge to the aircraft, passenger boarding and de-boarding, catering loading and unloading, aircraft fueling, aircraft cleaning etc. The result of all these efforts bore fruit when GVK CSMIA was adjudged as the

‘best airport by size and region’ in the Asia Pacific by the Airport Council International (ACI) for four consecutive years from 2015 to 2018. It was also ranked first in Airport Service Quality (ASQ) during 2017.

On completion of five years of operations, T2 has played a major role in the 25% growth in Air Traffic Movements since. Implementation of pioneering technologies for passengers’ benefits has been attracting the world to the city that never sleeps. GVK CSMIA was the first to introduce a fully-automated check-in process generating boarding pass and baggage tag through ‘Common Use Self Service (CUSS)’ kiosks along with extended check-in facility located at a host of five-star hotels in the city. Another first for an Indian airport was the introduction of Comfort Dog therapy for de-stressing weary travellers. GVK CSMIA was also the first airport to introduce personalized meet and greet services, ‘Pranaam’ that attends to all the needs at the airport, ensuring a smooth and stress-free travel.

The only airport in India to have released a Sustainability Report as per GRI standards, GVK CSMIA is also the first Indian airport to hold a platinum rating within an Existing Building (O&M) Rating System for its environmentally sustainable profile. Today, Terminal 2 has an installed capacity of 3,205 kWp of solar power and is in the process of installing an additional 1,381 kWp capacity of solar power. GVK CSMIA is also the host to India’s largest public art initiative – the Jaya He GVK New Museum -- located right inside T2 which is an impressive display of India’s rich culture and traditions. T2 also boasts of a sprawling 21,000 sq

mts of retail area housing over 100 retail brands and food outlets.

While social media site Twitter shared beautiful pictures of the T2 with the #High5ForMumbai, GVK CSMIA planned a special surprise where users were asked to show their unique dance moves at the airport to win exciting gifts. To celebrate the occasion, Geet Sagar and his band also performed some of the biggest hits at the airport. Apart from this, a cake cutting ceremony was also organised to usher in the sixth year while the stakeholders and the passengers fervently hoped that T2 would bring in more laurels and recognition in the future.

Showcase

GVK CSMIA, your gateway to the cultural extravaganza

Scattered throughout the four levels of Terminal 2 of GVK CSMIA

are more than 5,500 pieces of Indian art and handicrafts, including tribal totem poles and a 3-D map of Mumbai built from recycled chips and circuit boards. Together, they make up the Jaya He GVK New Museum. The ultramodern terminal handles all international and many domestic flights for the country’s commercial hub. So it is foremost a working airport and close to 50 million people who come through every year are there for one primary purpose: to get to and from their airplanes. “There is anxiety built in,” said Ms. Rekha Nair, who oversees the museum and customer experience at GVK CSMIA. “People think, I just want to get to the gate,” she adds.

As a result, the art is tucked into the hallways, baggage carousels and check-in counters so as to avoid disrupting the movement of passengers and the nearly 30,000 people who work at the airport. Angelic figures perch above the elevators. Treelike sculptures stand sentinel over the luggage belts. A mural accompanies passengers up to the escalator after they step off the arrivals bus.

The most prominent installation is “India Greets,” a 60-foot-high display that wraps around the centre of the terminal. It starts with real doorways and balconies from around India mounted to the wall, it then progresses

horizontally to a series of portraits by Andrew Logan, Robyn Beeche and Anjolie Menon as passengers walk towards the gates. A life-size white peacock slides along a wire in front of the works every hour.

The installation “Water” includes a set of fountains, each

tuned to a different note. Running your hands through the water can make music. Among the few who lingered were three tourists from Britain. “It’s the most beautiful art I have ever seen in an airport,” said Ms. Judith Wolfram, who had lived in India for seven years as a young woman and returned for a two-week visit with her daughter and daughter’s boyfriend. Ms. Wolfram was so impressed by the airport’s all-India art collection that when their flight was delayed, she decided to give the younger generation a quick tour of Indian art history.

Vice Chairman of GVK, Mr. G V Sanjay Reddy said he knew it would be a challenge to create an art museum in a place where people are always in transit. But he said he had wanted to do it anyway to introduce the country’s

GVK WORLD I Jan - March 2019 12

The museum deliberately sought to include Indian crafts along with contemporary fine art. “More

than 75 women from the slums near the airport, for example, were enlisted to make a giant, colourful

artistic heritage to Indians. “Even if we are able to catch one out of 100 people, we have done our job,” said Mr. G V Sanjay Reddy, who hired Delhi artist Mr. Rajeev Sethi to select and arrange the works. “A lot of this is subconscious. When you go through any place,

it becomes a part of you,” he said. Indeed, art and architecture go together in the terminal, which has 4.7 million square feet of built-up space, more than double the footprint of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The airport’s check-in hall, for example, is covered by a giant canopy in the shape of a peacock’s tail, with skylights to let in natural light and small nooks where passengers can sit before going through security.

Ms. Mukeeta Jhaveri, who lives in Mumbai and advises companies and private collectors on art purchases and cultural philanthropy, said that the airport’s collection stood out among both India’s museums and other public art installations at airports around the world. “It’s a mix of the contemporary, folk, antiquity, tribal, crafts, you name it,” she said, adding, “Even when I am rushing through the corridors, there is such a wonderful sense of both discovery and also that of meeting familiar friends.” The museum deliberately sought to include Indian crafts along with contemporary fine art. “More than 75 women from the slums near the airport, for example, were enlisted to make a giant, colourful Godhadi quilt,” Mr. G V Sanjay Reddy said.

“Moving Constant,” a gilded depiction of Indian gods and goddesses, is a popular photo spot on the domestic departures level of Terminal The earthiest work is

undoubted “Fortress of Clay,” Mr. Sethi’s homage to rural India. It features animal and human figurines made of mud and cow dung, which is still used as fuel, construction material and even as an insect repellent in the countryside. Airport employees periodically re-apply the fecal mixture to keep the figures looking fresh.

Mr. Ashok Kumar, a Mumbai bank manager who is originally from the farm state of Bihar, said he always took a moment to look at that exhibit on the way to his gate. “It’s the most familiar to me,” he said adding, “It’s down to earth.” By far the most popular piece, according to museum officials, is “Moving Constant,” a gilded depiction of Indian gods and goddesses by N. Ramachandran and V. Anamika that nods to the traditional Tanjore style of painting. Domestic passengers frequently stop to take selfies in front of the floor-to-ceiling artwork, while airport workers slip through a door in the corner to visit the employee restrooms.

Although a great deal of effort went into putting together the museum, far less has been put into helping the public enjoy it. Upon passing through security, travellers are hit with shops and restaurants, with little indication of the art that is deeper inside the terminal.

Free tours for passengers can be arranged online, although the “art safaris,” which last 15 to 45 minutes, need to be booked at least two days in advance. School groups can also make special arrangements to get through security and see the collection on the domestic level of the terminal.

“I wish the airport management could find ways to engage the traffic more,” Ms. Jhaveri, the art adviser, said adding, “It breaks my heart to see people rushing by without stopping.”

Active Bleeding Control Project – GVK EMRI

India records one of the highest road trauma deaths in the world. Uncontrolled bleeding

is the leading cause of preventable death, accounting for 40 per cent of the fatalities. Although the country is committed to reducing the number of these deaths to half by 2020, very few victims receive life-saving ‘Active Bleeding Control’, a process to stop the bleeding.

To make people aware of the process, GVK EMRI along with the Pediatric Simulation Training and Research Society (PediSTARS), Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI), Road Safety Club of Hyderabad, the Police & Transport Department, Telangana, Children’s Hospital Philadelphia (CHOP) and American Heart Association (AHA) launched the pilot project ‘Active Bleeding Control Programme’ at Hyderabad in March, 2018 in a pre-determined study area with the slogan, “YOU are the HELP until help arrives”.

The programme will be conducted across the State in a phased manner. The first phase (March 2018 to March 2019) focussed on training auto drivers, police

etc; registering them as ABC volunteers after training; distributing bleeding control kit; recognizing the saviour ABC volunteers; retraining; documenting the case studies; conducting qualitative research on the helping nature, training, constraints and use of bleeding control kit besides documenting evidence of the experience.

The second phase (March 2019 to March 2020) will include continuing the activities of Phase I besides focussing on the use of Drones to reduce the time of emergency medical supplies in partnership with Indian Institute of Sciences/ General Aeronautics, Bengaluru.

The third phase (March 2020 to March 2021) will look towards scaling up the ABC interventions to the entire Telangana state and India as early as possible.

The phase-wise highlights of the programme:

Phase 1: Pilot Study (March 2018 to March 2019)Hot spot, Black spot marking: Black spots are the potential spots where maximum mishaps occur and from where emergency calls to 108 are made. This was

GVK WORLD I Jan - March 2019 14

Saving lives through ABC

‘You are the help until help arrives’

Special Focus

Active Bleeding Control Project – GVK EMRIthe most important aspect of the pilot study to make maximum impact. Collaboration with the transport department and police enabled EMRI to mark black spots and hot spots.

First Responder identification: The project team identified potential volunteers in these two corridors through three rounds of field visits. Local police, transport officials and residents were asked to provide their inputs. Sensitisation was made through arranging a demonstration on how to arrest bleeding to the local community.

Trainers: Identified from the pool of senior trainers from GVK EMRI. They developed a programme to prepare training material and videos, trained the trainers and procure the kits with close supervision from the medical care team.

Research Team: A robust research team documented follow up, generated basic surveillance and quality improvement data. The documentation helped with system evaluation, preparedness and quality assurance guided by the leadership team.

ABC Kit: It contains an instruction manual on bleeding control, protective gloves, face masks, dressing pads, absorbent gauze rolls, tourniquet, cotton crepe bandage, wooden stick and kit package.

Training the Trainers and First Responders: This is approximately 60 minutes of training. The first minutes after a serious injury represent a window of time during which potentially life-saving measures can be initiated, such as identifying life-threatening bleed, applying direct pressure to a wound to reduce external bleeding and use of tourniquet, if required. A trained volunteer can safely use the kit without harming himself and carrying out the right thing. Good Samaritan law of India preaches that people who help the road accident victim will be

protected by the law. A total of 884 volunteers were trained who helped 24 road traffic accident victims.

Phase 2 (proposed from March 2019 onwards):Drones implementation is the second phase of the pilot study. Drones will help carry essential equipment to the

accident spot much before the ambulance arrives to maximise the chances of survival and reduce disabilities. Drones have been used successfully to drop the medical equipment and pills in other countries. However, more work needs to be done for delivering emergency life-saving

equipment. It requires technical support, financial help and legislative clearance.

Phase 3 : Scaling up (March 2020 onwards):Scaling up to adjacent districts and later to the Telangana state followed by neighbouring states and eventually to the national level will be the final phase in Active Bleeding Control Programme. Some of the issues over the next few years will be increasing medical direction and supervision, developing training, procuring equipment and improving interactions with the government bodies. With commitment from the leadership team and political will, we can overcome the expected and emerging challenges to reduce the fatalities on the roads.

GVK EMRI is committed to creating history by making the ABC project a success. Ambulance services have been started at Hyderabad. Volunteerism in helping road traffic victims can start in a scientific and systemic way from the city recognized as a technology hub. By using drones and demonstrating the use of technology to save lives, we can demonstrate by collaboration and create appropriate solutions to societal problems. The slogan ‘You are the help until help arrives’ is worth converting into action and national level influence.

Jaya He GVK New Museum celebrates women power

Team Jaya He GVK New Museum celebrated International Women’s

Day in a unique way. The team developed two concepts inviting participation from the staff and passengers alike. In the first concept, they set up a panel – The Admiration Club. It required one to express admiration for women in their life on a card, click a picture of the same and send it to the person they wrote about. This card was then tied to the admiration wall symbolizing their association with the club and that they would keep this value alive in the future. The team also invited 40 women from house-keeping and 20 women from the CISF, besides Pranaam guest services to provide them with a refreshing break from their demanding job and make them feel special. This gave them an opportunity to

spend some quality time away from the chores of their routine. These women were also taken on a special Jaya He Safari. The museum team appreciated and thanked them for their consistent services besides encouraging them to write and associate with the Admiration Club. The activity was well received and the wall was inundated with colours of admiration.Besides the Admiration Club, the team also spread the idea of gratitude with Gratitude Currency. This concept was designed as an alternative currency that can be passed on to the people as a mark of gratitude and to be thankful to them. Every coin was a symbol of exchanging 5,000 bits of happiness. The idea was highly appreciated by passengers and the employees who became richer in gratitude with every coin exchanged.

CSMIA runway intersection readied for the next decade

The project operations team at GVK MIAL successfully carried out repairs and

maintenance at the intersection of the two runways -- 09/27 (primary) and 14-32 (secondary) – at the GVK CSMIA. The activity commenced on February 7, 2019 and concluded on March 30, 2019. Before starting the repair works, the operations team conducted a ‘health check’ and concluded that only the top surface layer of the runway needed repairs. While the intersection was last repaired in 2009-2010, it was essential to give it a new life by milling and resurfacing with the hot mix asphalt over the existing surface. The operations team wanted to carry out the work in April-May, but as these months coincided with the peak summer vacation traffic, the repairs were advanced to February. More than 600 personnel with various equipment toiled hard for six hours a day in a

planned manner to complete the resurfacing work at the intersection on the main runway and secondary runway of GVK CSMIA. Every day, the work covered an area of about 5,000 square meters while the total area covered was about 50,000 square meters.

Besides resurfacing and re-profiling of the runway, the scope included aeronautical ground light (AGL) work and replacing 22 km of AGL cables to ensure clear visibility for landings and take-offs. The entire activity was completed in 22 days spread across two months. This entailed the airport to be shut for six hours every Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays between 11 am to 5 pm. The two months of hard work paid off after the runway was finally handed over to the ATC after conducting resurfacing and repair works.

Kudos to the Project Operations team for planning and carrying out the repairs with clock work efficiency!

10 Benefits Of Climbing Stairs

Are your mornings made of quick breakfasts and skipping workout

schedules?

If yes, we’ve got good news. While healthy breakfasts depend more on a diet plan,

there are benefits of climbing stairs that can be your perfect way to indulge in

daily exercises.

You would be surprised to see how simply ditching the elevators and climbing stairs can actually help you with fitness as well

as weight loss. So fight the demon and climb the stairs!

• Climbing stairs helps you burn more calories every minute as compared to jogging.

• Climbing stairs helps our body produce endorphins – the hormones known for creating a sense of happiness in our mind.

• Ultimately, whatever we do in life aims at a quest for happiness and if climbing stairs can give us the double benefit of losing weight and producing “happy hormones”, why not go for it each time there is an opportunity?

• Weight loss is another benefit of climbing stairs.

• Climbing stairs is a great form of cardio exercise. While climbing stairs, you work against gravity lifting your entire body. This activity strengthens your leg muscles making it a rather strenuous exercise.

• Climbing stairs helps you improve your heart rate and health. The consistent movement of your legs and hips results in deeper breathing increasing your heartbeat, which leads to increased blood flow in all of your body.

• Another benefit of climbing stairs is that it leads to stronger joints and muscles.

• As per various researches, it is proven and recommended by doctors, climbing stairs is an ideal way to improve your energy, develop your immune system, and lower your risk for diabetes, high blood pressure, osteoporosis and heart disease.

• Climbing stairs are definitely the most convenient form of exercise which reaps great results. There is no equipment cost as well as space issues.
