People were standing patiently, gently hopping from foot to foot trying to stave off the chilling effects of the wind. Others, seemingly innocent about the art of queuing, tried to advance their position and just walk straight to the door. There were police officers in an array of different uniforms; the most alarming was full body protection with those large automatic guns held securely at the side. A couple of photographers lingered on the off-chance they might get a scoop shot of two unlikely protagonists – well, we do live in the MOST interesting of political times after all. Tourists wandered and lingered and stood still at the most inconvenient of places and times. Cyclists sped past stationary vehicles with their bored drivers who looked – well, bored! Traffic goes nowhere fast in

central London. Two people who were clearly homeless shuffled by; one carried a little green plastic stool, a small bag of possessions and a lead to which was attached the most beautiful St Bernard dog. There was no barrel around his neck but I imagined his sheer size would be warmth and comfort enough alone in the cold hours of night. The other looked weighed down by the cares of world; gaunt and twitchy, her hair lank and tangled, her skin grey and her eyes almost devoid of life. Our lives are often made up of these little moments.... waiting for our own to move on whilst watching the lives of those around us unfold before our eyes. Irritated by the impatient and the aimless. Indifferent to those who wait alongside us, wherever we might be. Both comforted and yet somehow scared by the visible presence of the potential for violence that seems to be the hallmark now of city life. Challenged to love the unlovely... so easily said, so difficult to live out. Existing, not living life to its fullest, is what this means for so many. When Christ returns he may come as a thief in the night catching us unaware and unprepared. Us waiting languidly in a queue just watching the world go by. After all, it hasn’t happened in the last two millennia so why should we expect him to return now? We’ve got all the time in the world. Haven’t we?

For Reflection:
November and December are seasons when I increasingly find myself drawn into reflecting on “souls and incarnation” - an interesting combination. However, experiences in East Africa where we work make me all the more aware of the fragility of mortal life and the importance of knowing God within us.
I’m not going to get drawn into the whole discussion around creation vs evolution – that is another topic entirely, however as a scientist I can tell you one thing - the order that we see in all living creatures is beyond happenstance – in my humble opinion. That is why the idea from Genesis that : the Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and the man became a living being… sits well with me.
It is not by chance but by design. It’s that sense that God breathes the Holy Spirit into us. That we are made in God’s image: God the Father, creator and source of all knowledge; Christ the Son, incarnate Saviour and our pattern for life; and God the Spirit dynamic and life-giving. The Spirit of God in dwells within each of us. God breathed it into us. Air – the element we breathe – is symbolic of that. It is life-giving and sustaining. The Spirit provides us a connection with the Almighty. It is that inner voice that speaks to us in the stillness. That prompts us to respond to different situations. It is the thread that binds us to God. It is at the heart of our soul.

For Reflection:
This month, I’ve chosen a piece of 14th century wisdom from a book of short meditations called “The Cloud of Unknowing”
“Be very careful how you spend time. There is nothing more precious. In the twinkling of an eye heaven may be won or lost. God shows us that time is precious, for he never gives two moments of time side by side, but always in succession. To do otherwise he would have to alter the whole course of creation. Time is made for man, not man for time.”
In a world where everything is immediate and our diaries are stretched to the limit it is good to contemplate this piece of timeless wisdom. Despite our ‘advancements’ as a society nothing has changed - the sentiments expressed here are still as true today as the day they were written. How often do we squander time on needless activities? How often do we cherish the moments that God has given us in succession? How often do we look back with regret on a day not lived to the full?
God shows us that time is precious...

August/September 2017 Prayer Points
We are thankful for:
- The continuation of some rain in parts of East Africa - The safe return to Kericho of our partner Emmy and her successful visit to the UK - A great year end for FT US, with over $100k raised in two days - The inspirational, enthusiastic examples of our local partners - The loyal generosity and interest of our supporters - The support, time and encouragement of our Trustees
We ask your prayers for:

facing life changing conditions - This season of holidays, that we might all find rest and refreshment and travel safely
For Reflection:
Someone told him, ‘Look, your mother and your brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.’ But to the one who had told him this, Jesus replied, ‘Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?’ And pointing to his disciples, he said, ‘Here are my mother and my brothers! For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.’ Matthew 12. 47-50
I am privileged to be a mother but recently, when our local partner Emmy was with us, my “children expanded” - Emmy took to calling me Mum. As a term of endearment it was delightful but it started me thinking about families and relationships and I turned to this fascinating insight from Matthew’s Gospel.
There are a couple of times when Jesus is almost dismissive of his mother - the obvious one is at Cana. Whilst on the cross he hands over his mother to the disciple John, and vice versa - it’s not an act of dismissal this time, more one of making provision for their mutual care.
But, who are our mother and brother and sister? Where do we draw the family bundary? Jesus is crystal clear here - whoever does God’s will is part of his family!
We often speak of the family of the church but how far do we take that analogy? Do we really see those who are ‘separated’ from us by distance, culture and creed as part of our family? Do I consider Emmy to be my daughter - since she slipped easily into calling me Mum? Not really; despite it being possible - but I do see Emmy as part of my wider family circle though.
It is one of the blessings of Five Talents that so much of what we do is grounded in God and demonstrated through wonderful, surprising, energising relationships.

For Reflection:
Given the recent incidents that have overshadowed our country in recent weeks it seems right to reflect on Christ as the light of the world. The first 9 verses of the Gospel of John inspires me and leaves me in awe (in equal measure) each time I hear it, especially at Christmas.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.
With each successive incident in recent weeks I have had a sense of a creeping darkness; an increasing malevolence that threatens to topple society. However, after each moment of darkness the response of ordinary people has defied and dispersed that with acts of generosity and loving kindness. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the

darkness did not overcome it.
Here is a short prayer that you might want to use:
Father, we know that darkness stalks our world preying on the innocent.
We are reminded that your light dispels the darkness and offers us comfort in these terrible times.
May your love enfold all those whose lives have been devastated by this incident.
May those who have lost their lives rest in peace. Amen

For Reflection:
As we approach Easter I am reminded of the role of women in the Passion narrative. Especially, I been challenged afresh by Mary of Magdala, the Apostle to the Apostles. The following is an excerpt from the Lenten Reflection booklet that my London church produces for Easter Sunday - with thanks to the author.
Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”; and she told them that he had said these things to her. John 20 v 18
Upset, confused and shaken, Mary makes her way to the tomb at the break of day with her mind focused on the past, on golden hours spent with Jesus and the disciples. She has come looking for the ending to her story. Looking to find the body, she fails to recognise the risen Christ until he speaks to her. She turns to him

[email protected] 02038087643
and recognises. It is no surprise that she doesn’t recognise the risen Christ. Unlike Lazarus, this resurrection is not the restoration of the old, rather, the breaking in of something new. Jesus speaks her name; he names her, and as Mary turns around, she turns away from the past and faces the future. He tells her not to cling to him as he was. Mary’s message to the disciples, and to us, is that Jesus is ascending to his Father, and to ours.
The resurrection opens a fissure in time through which God’s future streams into the world, ever resurrecting and recreating through the power of the spirit. God’s love for the world, which he invites us to share in, is not an emotional state- it is a giving up of the self to new and endless possibilities in the resurrection which has happened, but which also is still happening: immersing ourselves in the new creation, prising wider the fissure through which God’s kingdom invades worldly kingdoms in and out of time, and taking part in a dynamic of love, eternally exchanged between the father and son, through the spirit. The transforming effect is such that the disciples, who, in their fear, had abandoned Jesus as he was arrested, were now prepared to defy death rather than deny the truth of the new life.
The resurrection is not just a hallmark of a faith we commemorate like an anniversary, it is the climax of God establishing a new, divine reality.
It makes me ponder on many things but mostly on how both women and men are central to God’s complementary created order. For me, it also affirms our work with the women we seek to serve who echo Mary’s conviction and strength.

For Reflection:
Lent will soon be upon us and I have been reflecting on the humble mustard seed and its unique role in the Parables. For all those who are interested a Lent Lunch or one session study course is available to download here.
However, it got me thinking about how all things grow from small beginnings and how pertinent that is to our work. Our client’s savings are tiny (by comparison to our own potential). Their businesses are equally minimalist. Yet the outcomes they achieve are enormous and it reminded me of the Widow of Zarephath.
Then the word of the Lord came to him, saying, ‘Go now to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and live there; for I have commanded a widow there to feed you.’ So he set out and went to Zarephath. When he came to the gate of the town, a widow was there gathering sticks; he called to her and said, ‘Bring me a little water in a vessel, so that I may drink.’ As she was going to bring it, he called to her and said, ‘Bring me a morsel of bread in your hand.’ But she said, ‘As the Lord your God lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of meal in a jar, and a little oil in a jug; I am now gathering a couple of sticks, so that I may go home and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it, and die.’ Elijah said to her, ‘Do not be afraid; go and do as you have said; but first make me a little cake of it and bring it to me, and afterwards make something for yourself and your son. For thus says the Lord the God of Israel: The jar of meal will not be emptied and the jug of oil will not fail until the day that the Lord sends rain on the earth.’ She went and did as Elijah said, so that she as well as he and her household ate for many days. The jar of meal was not emptied, neither did the jug of oil fail, according to the word of the Lord that he spoke by Elijah. (1 King’s 17, 8-16)

Everything in this text is small. Elijah asks initially for a morsel. The widow explain that her supplies are meagre and very finite. Yet, her faith is sufficient to trust in the prophet and do what he asks. You may recall the rest of the story – which becomes even more miraculous – but if not, I would recommend you to read it.
The inspiration of the Lent study is a Swahili proverb:
“The beginning of great things are small things” or “Chanzo cha makubwa ni madogo”
It pretty much sums up Five Talents for me!

During this season of Advent and Christmas our minds are focused on Christ; his first coming to this world and his return. In our Christmas card this year we have used the following verse:
For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder.
Registered Charity No 1113969 www.fivetalents.org.uk
[email protected] 02038087643
And His name will be called Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9v6)
It was chosen for a number of reasons but primarily because of the last three words: Prince of Peace.
In a world that feels increasingly divided and divisive the search and desire for peace has rarely been greater. Disaffection with those who lead us is getting to endemic proportions as peoples across the globe voice their opinions in unexpected votes. Oh for the government to be on His shoulder now.
In early November, I attended a conference on Migration and Mission. I am still processing all I heard and learnt but these are three things that continue to give me food for thought:
- How humanity has always been a migratory tribe - How it feels to be the Canaanites as the Exodus approaches - How we respond to the flood of people forced out of their homes
Five Talents works to ease the plight of those who are displaced but also helps those who might otherwise become economic refugees to stay in their homeland. We must strive to be like the government would be under the “Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace”
May this Christmas and the coming year be full of peace for you and yours

they may know the peace of Christ in their lives
This is the season of Remembrance - both nationally through the Poppy Day activities - but also in the church through the observance of the festival of All Souls. This year the Church of England also have the Parable of the Talents as its set reading for the 13th November. Our verse this month is therefore from that Parable:
“His master said to him, “Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.”
You may wish to reflect on how you use the talents that you have been given - both in terms of your resources (a talent was an amount of currency) but also with respect to your gifts/skills. The essence of this Parable is that God gets frustrated (and more) when we fail to deploy and utilise what He has given each us.
May we each be put in charge of many things and enter into His joy!
