Tree Plantation to mitigate Climate change

Better Cotton Initiative 2

Tree Plantation and Climate Change

As trees grow, they help stop climate change by removing carbon dioxide from

the air, storing carbon in the trees and soil, and releasing oxygen into the

atmosphere. Trees provide many benefits to us, every day.

Tree Plantation Play an important role in following aspects;

➢ Through gaseous exchange, trees minimize Carbon dioxide emissions

➢ Trees also reduce the temperature and make environment favorable for

biological activity

➢ Trees reduce soil erosion and support soil through gradual increase of

organic matter

Better Cotton Initiative 3

Good practice description

1. In 2020, By following the last year best practice farmers

started tree plantation with their own resources and

installed 2000 plants in coordination with SWRDO in

BCI target area to mitigate the climate change risk.

2. Few of farmers established Plant Nurseries(Azadirachta

indica Neem, Syzygium cumini Jaman, Vachellia nilotica

Keekar. Melia azedarach bakain, Pongamia pinnata

sukh chain) to extend the scope of said practice

3. BCI Women’s workers and farmers are engaged while

the course of this practice for plantation, Kitchen

gardening, skill trainings on livestock management.

4. Separate training sessions were organized for BCI

farmers, workers on climate change mitigation ,

adaptation and about their role to conserve the nature.

5. Linkages development with other partners working on

same.

Better Cotton Initiative 4

Good practice description

Initial Situation

1. Lack of awareness about their role & the importance

of mitigation and adaptation activities to response

the climate challenge.

2. Lack of understanding regarding Consideration of

Gender Role

Non availability of resources to execute the plan that

is why integrated approach adopted and plan linked

with other existing projects and stakeholders working

on same.

Cutting trees rapidly ,Continued maintenance of

plants (growth and caring )

Better Cotton Initiative 5

MethodologyPlan designed keeping in view internal and External

resources

Plan further aligned with the Farmers self initiative &

Follow-up of 2019-20 Best practise

Women ‘s role consideration through skill training, tree

plantation and livelihood activity to reduce vulnerability of

climate change through integrated approach.

Awareness Raising on Climate change mitigation and

adaptation at community level

Nursery Establishment by farmers at LG level through

linkages development with other organizations

Better Cotton Initiative 6

Good practice descriptionKey Stakeholders

➢ Social welfare & Forest Département /clean Green Pakistan

campaign

➢ Response USA Fund & PAPk, Existing projects of SWRDO

➢ LG groups

Who are the users and beneficiaries?

➢ BCI Farmers and Workers including women’s workers

Better Cotton Initiative 7

Success factors & constraints

key criteria of success

Programatic approach of SWRDO

Continuous Capacity Building

Strong mobilization

Woman Participation

Engagement of Various

stakeholders

Challenges

understanding of relationship between

tree plantation and climate change

Prerequisites for proper growth of tree

growth.

Cultural barriers regarding women

gathering for meetings.

Better Cotton Initiative 8

Success factors & constraints

Success Factors

Follow up of last year

Tree plantations( 60%

Survival)

Continuous Learning

Demonstration of activity

Availability of Cheaper plants

Constraints

Understanding level about

importance of natural resources

protection.

Unavailability of cheaper plants

Adoption of new activities

Better Cotton Initiative 9

Impact & results

How has this practice benefitted the environment

and the community around the cotton farm areas?

Increased 2000 plants at community level to mitigate the risk and

conserve the nature .

Developed Sense of Ownership among BCI Farmers and workers

Plant Nursery established by farmer of 30,000 plants.

Performed women workers their role to conserve natural resources

and adapted activities to reduce vulnerability.

Increased acceptability about women’s role to response climate

challenge

Better Cotton Initiative 10

Up-scaling & replicability

Linkages development Engagement of all relevant stakeholders like forest

department, environment protection department and Farmers for provision of

Tree/seed, nurseries development

Community Involvement through continuous sensitization on plantation

Establish nurseries at LGs and farmers level

Improve women participation, Positive norm setting regarding climate change

mitigation and adaptation

Better Cotton Initiative 11

Up-scaling & replicability

Support from BCI

BCI Well contributed indirectly through capacity building of PU Managers on

Biodiversity management

BCI Can develop linkages to provide farmers with cheaper tree plants

suitable for their locality and on farm conservation and enhancing

biodiversity,

BCI Can build linkage to extend the scope of activity.

Better Cotton Initiative 12

Up-scaling & replicability

Lessons Learned

Community Mobilization is the key process for behavioural Change

Individual Role can bring desirable change

Need of Training field guide on biodiversity and Tree plantation for effective

community mobilization.

Participation of women workers can be helpful to bring the desired results.
