Another new season is upon us, hope you all have been busy filming and have had a good holiday, I was busy at the end of last season when I attended the Bolton Film Challenge which again was a very enjoyable evening with a good

variety of films,.

The winning film went to Morecambe Bay Movie Makers with the movie Big Wild Stocktake, the movie followed the activities at Leighton Moss RSPB reserve during their stocktake of all things great and small by volunteers.

The North West Festival and AGM is on November 7th again at Chad's Theatre Cheadle Hulme. As competition officer would you please send your entry's as soon as possible - the closing date is Saturday 24th October.

David Newman FACI will be the speaker and judge on the day and you will find his experiences very informative. The new season is under way and I hope club membership hasn't gone down,

club numbers are a huge worry not just at local level but also at national level.

The IAC North West Region is also finding it difficult to attract more Council members. Anyone interested in helping out please get in contact - we meet five times a year and need your support. Finally I wish you all a good season with your movies and look forward to seeing them in our competitions.

Secretary’s Scribbles.

John Gleaves

At the recent Council meeting held at Preston, the meeting discussed one or two things. Perhaps the first item of interest was the lack of support for the Workshop on Special Effects, for which the Region had received a grant to support the day. Richard Curry had worked hard for this because in the past he had been asked about arranging an-other one. Sadly, when the Region was put to the test, it came up wanting. Very few people showed interest in the day, it is perhaps a reflection on our commitment to the Region, or, as was suggested, there are many programmes which offer Effects. The Secretary had received the application forms for the Mermaid competitions and handed these to the Competition secretary, Jim Whalley. Any entries from the Region should be with Jim by 12th September so that the chosen ones can be forwarded to the competition. A request was made for volunteers to be members of the Council. There are one or two members who have more than one job to perform, and although at times it is quite challenging, it is enjoyable. The Council meets about four or five times per year. The inter-club competition, held at Southport, is to be held on 30thApril 2016, whilst the Mersey Ten is looking for a host club. If any club is interested, please notify the Chair-man. I stumbled across a short broadcast on the radio which suggested that the first moving im-ages were not produced by the Lumiere brothers in France, but a M. le Prince, working in Leeds. It would appear that M. le Prince was a somewhat shy and retiring gentleman and did not patent his invention; this was done by the Lumiere brothers, so the credit goes to them. It would be interesting if anyone could shed further light on this topic. Leeds might have been the centre of a film culture called ‘Hollywood!’

'Danube - River of Europe' international competition

Prompted by Dave Watterson's article in the May/June issue of Film & Video maker Magazine I re-edited and re-scored my Audlem film and entered it into the 'Danube - River of Europe' international competition in Rousse, Bulgaria.

The film was accepted by the selection committee and I was offered hotel accommoda-tion, meals and access to all the events during the four day festival (25th-29th June). Since I have been feeling much better recently I took the plunge and went!! This was my first solo outing following my extended medical adventures and continuing convales-cence. To my great surprise I won the "River Award" for the best film about a waterway. (The Shropshire Union Telford built Canal). The photograph is of Vladimir Iliev, the festival organiser, presenting me with the Award at the outdoor banquet on the Saturday evening. There were 77 entries from18 countries. Other awards included 'Animation'(Russia), 'Comedy'(Ukraine), 'Documentary'(Austria), 'Experimental'(Estonia) and an award for a 'home-grown' Bulgarian film. The five International jury members included Jeanne Glass, the Vice-President of UNI-CA. The Festival was superbly organised and the whole experience was a great delight. But then I would say that, wouldn't I. !!? John Owen IAC North West Member & IAC National Council

Swan Movie Makers Wirral

The Ness Event

Recently As part of our sixty years celebration Swan Movie Makers held a special after-noon event at Ness Gardens, Wirral. Well over a hundred attended what was widely re-ported back as a thoroughly enjoyable occasion. In the first half Edward Peak gave an outstanding presentation, outlining A Century of Motion Pictures from a music perspec-tive.

Edward Peak

Royal Liverpool Philharmonic

There could be no one better placed to bring the beauty and drama of film music than a man who played for the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra under the world’s great-est conductors, then created his own orchestra, L’Orchestra dell’Arte, is involved in film production and is himself something of a film buff. Edward Peak was just that man!

In the second half Swan presented a film show covering a wide selection of movies, in-cluding several award winners, created by Swan members.

Peter Jones - Chairman

All this was set in a lecture theatre surrounded by the fabulous gardens of Ness and many took advantage of the chance to enjoy this grand feature as well. A very successful and memorable day for swan Members

Interclub Competition - An apology

I write humbly and with full apologies concerning the Competition at Southport on 25th April. We cannot excuse what happened but wish to offer the explanation for what it’s worth. Those Clubs who have attended prior to this year will know that we always had a simple grid score sheet which meant that it was easy to tell fairly quickly and probably before all scores had been collated, who had actually won. Just days before the Competition we were offered the score sheet you all saw which of-fered a more exciting looking result sheet and the added advantage of not really know-ing until the last moment who had won because the scores given were only visible to the person entering them. Unfortunately the designer and programmer then announced he would be away for a few weeks and wouldn’t be present to enter the scores on the day. No instructions were left. Some corrections and alterations had to be carried out via an exchange of e-mails but for whatever reason a detailed testing was never carried out as the thing almost worked by itself without much thought! As a result, on the day, as the scores were read out they were entered down the columns of the grid which drives the bar chart instead of across the rows with the result that, as you all saw, the bars illustrated the total points awarded to all films by each club instead of the accumulated score from all clubs for each film. Obviously one of the sets of headings needs to refer to the film and the other to the club to avoid confusion. The two jpeg’s attached illustrate the score sheet as you saw it showing Poynton to have won; and also the corrected score sheet showing Morecambe Bay as the true winner. We thought things were running smoothly and were feeling pleased with ourselves but, as they say, pride comes before a fall. As I have said we sincerely apologise to all Clubs but particularly to Poynton for misleading them (all the worse as this was their first year in the competition), and also to Morecambe Bay for denying them the pleasure of taking the trophy home with them. We promise we will get it right next year and hope the tarnish on our reputation will soon wear off. With Best Wishes to all . . .

Michael Alley – Secretary 01704 877500
