Corsicana DMR Repeater changes

Jason KC5HWB has reprogrammed the DMR Radio for Corsicana

since last month. It now looks similar to Hillsboro channels.

The Corsicana repeater 145.29 has been worse lately.

145.29 has had problems for quite a while now, but this last

month it has gotten worse.


Wil & Doug went to the site and checked the SWR on the

hardline to the antenna and found it “SKY HIGH”.

Rather than burn up a good repeater it was taken off the air,

and a temporary repeater antenna was setup about 10’ to get

back on the air.

So not it should work better, but range reduced due to the

limited height for now.

RadioShack Re-Opens with Local Ham Radio Club Partner

A previously closed RadioShack store in Tennessee has re-

opened in Jefferson City in partnership with the Lakeway

Amateur Radio Club (LARC) to offer licensing classes.

“These types of programs were dropped by RadioShack years

ago. Now we have the opportunity to bring them back. We have

to get to the next generation. RadioShack will die out if we don’t

get to them”

This open area of the store will be home to classes in such

subjects as soldering, using drones, setting up a Facebook page,

and configuring and using a smartphone, harnessing the spirit

of “Makers Space”.

When bankruptcy struck RadioShack, the store managed by

Freers in Jefferson City was on of the last to close. Freers took

the opportunity to open a franchise, purchasing stock from a

RadioShack distribution center.

FCC Scraps Telegraph Regulations

The FCC is continuing its drive to remove outmoded regulations

and reduce the regulatory burden, has scrapped the regulations

regarding Telegraph.

The last Western Union telegram in the United States was sent

in 2006 and the FCC hasn’t enforced rules since 2013.

The FCC said in a notice it was removing “outmoded

regulations” on telegraphs effective in November to “further

our goals of reducing regulatory burdens, eliminating

unnecessary rule provisions, and making the agency as efficient

and effective as possible.”

FCC chairman Ajit Pai said in May he wanted to remove

outdated rules, striking irrelevant regulations as “just a matter

of good housekeeping” and others that stand “in the way of

innovation and investment that would benefit consumers.”

Imminent Shutdown of Repeater Group

South Yorkshire Repeater Group (SYRG) have taken the

unprecedented decision to close down the whole repeater

network.

Due to a number of factors, the group are unable to provide the

service they had achieved over a number of years.

The affected repeaters are

Traditional Ham Radio No Longer So Attractive

aspects of Amateur Radio may not be attractive to all

newcomers

During his speech, Ellam, urged attendees to reflect upon what

will attract the majority of young people into Amateur Radio,

“and what our mutual expectations should be.” Ellam said his

personal observation is that, while some younger people are

interested in the more traditional aspects of Amateur Radio,

many are only interested in ham radio as an adjunct to other

possibly unrelated interests.


“I applaud the excellent work that has been undertaken in this

region through the Youngsters on the Air (YOTA) program.” Tim

said, crediting the hard work of IARU Region 1 Youth Working

Group Chair Lisa Leenders, PA2LS. YOTA’s summer Amateur

Radio camps have attracted young hams from around the

world; this year’s was held in the UK.

“Our ambition should be to embrace these individuals in their

activities and accept that some of the more traditional aspects

of the hobby will hold little interest to them, and indeed may no

longer be relevant,” he continued. “That is not to say that some

are not enthused with what we all hold as the core of our

hobby, such as contesting or operating generally. I fear, though,

that we need to look at what will attract the new generations to

Amateur Radio and make sure we promote Amateur Radio as

meeting their needs, rather than promoting the historical view

of what Amateur Radio has to offer.”

RF pollution from LED bulbs in Germany

The German Amateur Radio Club (DARC) has issued a press

release identifying domestic LED light bulbs as a source of

electrical interference

The increasing popularity of these light sources has led to a

significant increase in reports of radio traffic disturbance,

interruption of radio services and even poor DAB reception. In

their opinion, the electrically noisy LED lamps are a result of a

bad government policy which simply ignores regulations

applicable to EMC and the generation of EMI by electrical

equipment.

According to DARC, the recommendations outlined in the

regulations governing electromagnetic compatibility have

simply been ignored.

Some of the spectrum areas affected include

• Digital Audio Broadcast (DAB) 174 - 240 MHz

• Marine VHF 156 - 162.025 MHz

• Amateur Radio 2 metre band 144 - 146 MHz

• Airband 118 - 136.975 MHz

• FM Stereo broadcast 88 - 108 MHz

• Baby monitors 49.30 - 49.89 MHz

• High-frequency services, inc. long range marine &

airband, Shortwave broadcasts, Amateur radio

allocations, Citizens' Band radio, plus wireless devices

operating on 27MHz 3 - 30 MHz

The result is that LED lamps currently on sale and in use

generate considerable wideband RF interference.

FCC Tells Apple Turn on iPhone's FM Radio Chip

Recently reelected FCC Chairman Ajit Pai has called on Apple to

“step up to the plate” and put American’s safety first by

enabling a feature on iPhones.

As America comes to the end a hurricane season that has

caused so much disruption and devastation across the

Caribbean and the US, Pai has called on Apple to enable FM

radio in their handsets to increase the scope of communication

available.

School Students Ham Radio Link to Puerto Rico

Garden School's Amateur Radio Club (in New York) are offering

a messaging lifeline to residents in Puerto Rico, using the

equipment in the schools amateur radio room.

The school's radio club, which has grown to around 20

members since launching last year, has competed in contests

and learned all about operating ham radios from inside the 78th

Street school.

The station, call sign K2GSG — is transmitting messages to send

down to hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico, which has been mostly

without power since Hurricane Maria struck the island.

Garden School teacher John Hale KD2LPM, the club's faculty

advisor, was trained in emergency messaging this summer —


and put it to use Thursday by sending his first two messages to

Puerto Rico.

"They're completely without power," he said. "This is the way

we're getting messages in."

Symbol Rate Restrictions - FCC Grants Temporary Waiver

The FCC has granted an ARRL request to waive current Amateur

Radio rules to permit data transmissions at a higher symbol rate

than currently permitted, in order to facilitate hurricane relief

communications between the continental US and Puerto Rico

The temporary waiver is limited to Amateur Radio operators in

Puerto Rico using PACTOR 3 and PACTOR 4 emissions, and to

those radio amateurs in the continental US who are directly

involved with HF hurricane relief communications involving

Puerto Rico or the US Virgin Islands, the Commission said.

“We conclude that granting the requested waiver is in the public

interest. Hurricane Maria caused massive destruction in Puerto

Rico, and communication services continue to be disrupted.

Thus, to accommodate Amateur Radio operators assisting in the

recovery efforts, we grant the ARRL’s waiver request for the

Radio Caroline Secures AM Slot

Radio Caroline, the station with roots in the pirate radio history

of the 1960s and 70s, has completed its reincarnation into a

mainstream broadcasting station by receiving a permanent

licence to operate on the AM band.

Ofcom has granted Radio Caroline a licence to operate

permanently at 648 kHz at 1 kW ERP, 53 years after

broadcasting as a pirate radio station from a boat in the North

Sea.

Since May 2017, the Radio Caroline team have had to overcome

many changes to serve their primary historical first market of

Essex and Suffolk. Many of the delays were caused by getting

the new facility up and running, which was more difficult than

anticipated, mainly owing to extensive required paperwork and

obtaining necessary certifications to construct the station.

Ajit Pai Confirmed for 2nd FCC Term

The US Senate has confirmed the current FCC Chairman, Ajit Pai

for a second term. Pai would have had to leave the FCC at the

end of the year, had he not been reconfirmed.

President Donald Trump nominated Pai for a new term in

January 2017 his previous term as a commissioner had expired

on 1st July 2016, and his new term is retroactive to that date.

FCC rules permitted him to remain until the end of 2016.

The final tally was 52-41, with voting generally along party lines,

although he picked up votes from four Democratic senators.

nomination to serve a second term at the FCC and to President

Trump for submitting that nomination to the Senate. Since

January, the Commission has focused on bridging the digital

divide, promoting innovation, protecting consumers and public

Pai has primarily drawn fire for his opposition to so-called “net

neutrality” rules. All five members of the FCC must be

confirmed by the Senate, but the president chooses which will

serve as the chairman.

Australian Clubs 60th Birthday

On Thursday 18th October 1957, what was to become the

Central Coast Amateur Radio Club, had it's inaugural meeting

where 37 people attended. The club has been a stable part of

amateur radio in New South Wales, Australia for the last 60

years, running at one point 15 repeaters and beacon stations.

That has since been consolidated to a lower number but still

provides analogue and digital voice plus ATV repeaters covering

from 6 metres to 23 centimeters.

The club runs regular licence classes and exams, is involved in

contests, supports the local WICEN (Emcoms) group and is

probably most well known for its annual Hamfest, or Field day

as they are called in Australia. The Wyong Field Day run by the

CCARC is the largest gathering of Radio Amateurs in the

southern hemisphere and it too, will celebrate 60 years on 25th

February 2018.

The club is planning celebrations between the 60th club

anniversary in October and the 60th Hamfest in February but as

is normal with this hard working club, things will most likely be

low key.

Ham Radio Volunteers in Puerto Rico Install Repeater, Work

with Hospitals and Reunification

The Amateur Radio volunteers on the ground in Puerto Rico

continue to provide assistance in a number of areas. Amateur

Radio resources have been reallocated around the island to

better meet communications needs.

Volunteer Valerie Hotzfeld, NV9L, and a FEMA team member

were tasked with calling 68 hospitals and medical facilities. They

asked a series of 12 questions geared toward obtaining a better

understanding of each facility’s communication capabilities, and

to see if urgent care supplies and needs were being met.

Gary Sessums, KC5QCN, the Amateur Radio liaison to the ESF-2

Communications Task Force, coordinated the installation of a

VHF Amateur Radio repeater on a mountain peak in El Yunque

National Forest. The repeater now gives radio coverage to

approximately 60% of Puerto Rico, and also extends radio

coverage into the US Virgin Islands.

Andy Anderson, KEØAYJ, is stationed at the Guajataca Dam,

providing communications support to the Puerto Rico Electric

Power Authority (Autoridad de Energía Eléctrica) between their

control facility and the dam as the water levels are lowered to

prevent the dam from collapsing.

Safe and Well data collection continues at Red Cross shelters,

and in reunification work that involves going out into areas that

have no communication. Hams are engaged in setting up

equipment and entering data into the Red Cross Safe and Well

website. Hams also facilitate survivors’ access to cell or satellite

phones so they can call a loved one to let them know they are

safe.

Reunification team officials have expressed that hams have

become invaluable to the team, not only performing

communications duties, but also having become proficient in

multiple skill sets for the Red Cross. Ham radio volunteers are


acting as navigators, reunification workers, and anything else

that is needed. To date, they have completed 60 reunifications.

Donations to the response effort continue, with EPCOM (El Paso

Communications Systems) donating 40 Icom IC-F3001 handheld

radios, and the Yasme Foundation providing an Amateur Radio

repeater that will be installed at the Arecibo Observatory to

provide SAR communications.

FCC Grants Temporary Waiver to Permit Higher Symbol Rate

The FCC has granted an ARRL request to waive current Amateur

Radio rules to permit data transmissions at a higher symbol rate

than currently permitted, in order to facilitate hurricane relief

communications between the continental US and Puerto Rico.

The temporary waiver is limited to Amateur Radio operators in

Puerto Rico using PACTOR 3 and PACTOR 4 emissions, and to

those radio amateurs in the continental US who are directly

involved with HF hurricane relief communications involving

Puerto Rico or the US Virgin Islands, the Commission said.

“We conclude that granting the requested waiver is in the

public interest,” the FCC said in its October 5 Order. “Hurricane

Maria caused massive destruction in Puerto Rico, and

communication services continue to be disrupted. Thus, to

accommodate Amateur Radio operators assisting in the

recovery efforts, we grant the ARRL’s waiver request for the

period of 60 days from the date of this Order.”

ARRL explained in its waiver petition that it’s shipping five

PACTOR radio modems to Puerto Rico for use in connection

with Hurricane Maria disaster relief communications. The

League asked the FCC to temporarily allow PACTOR 3 and

PACTOR 4 transmissions that exceed the current symbol rate

limitations under § 97.307(f) of the Amateur Service rules.

Under the current rules, “specified digital codes” in Part 97 may

be used with a symbol rate that does not exceed 300 baud for

frequencies below 28 MHz, with the exception of 60 meters,

and 1200 baud in the 10 meter band. The baud rate limits were

adopted in 1980, when the FCC amended Part 97 to specify

ASCII as a permissible digital code.

Ham Radio Volunteers Deploy Throughout Puerto Rico

A team of 20 Amateur/Ham Radio operators have volunteered

and have been deployed to Puerto Rico, to assist the hurricane-

affected island in partnership with the American Red Cross.

The team of volunteers will provide communications for local

law enforcement and utility managers; island-to-mainland

health-and-welfare traffic, which has been ongoing, and contact

with the more remote areas of Puerto Rico, cut off from the

capital of San Juan and not heard from since the Hurricane

Maria affected the island on 20th September 2017.

“Volunteers initially gathered at the convention center in San

Juan, which is serving as Puerto Rico Emergency Management

Agency (PREMA) headquarters. Their first night, a local church

offered accommodations, and volunteers slept on pews that had

been pushed together.”

Before the team's arrival, ARRL Section Manager Oscar Resto,

KP4RF, and other volunteers have staffed VHF and HF nets at

the American Red Cross temporary headquarters, despite

damage to their own homes. The net covers nearly two-thirds

of the island and has been handling traffic to and from the

power company, Autoridad de Energía Eléctrica (Electric Power

Authority — AEE), and state and local authorities. The electric

distribution infrastructure suffered extreme storm damage, and

power has remained out over most of the island.

An Amateur Radio station has been installed and an operator

embedded at the Puerto Rico Emergency Operations Center

(PREOC). Radio amateurs also have been asked to establish VHF

communication capabilities at 51 hospitals throughout the

island, so they can have direct contact with the PREOC. Local

hams will staff that facility for now. The volunteer embedded at

the PREOC is serving as liaison between the PREOC and the

FEMA Emergency Support Function (ESF-2) task force, relaying

information among the Red Cross, ARRL, FEMA, and the ESF-2

Individual Licences Legal in Tunisia

The Ministry of Telecommunications of Tunisia has approved

and issued a decree organising amateur radio activity in Tunisia.

It is now possible for Tunisian amateurs to apply, pass an exam

and get their own amateur radio licences.

Those who already have a foreign licence can be granted

licences without passing an exam. Resident foreigners can also

apply.

American Red Cross Asks ARRL’s Assistance with Puerto Rico

Relief Effort

The American Red Cross (ARC) has asked the ARRL for

assistance with relief efforts in Puerto Rico. ARC needs up to 50

radio amateurs who can help record, enter, and submit

disaster-survivor information into the ARC Safe and Well

system. In the nearly 75-year relationship between ARRL and

ARC, this is the first time such a request for assistance on this

scale has been made. ARRL now is looking for radio amateurs

who can step up and volunteer to help our friends in Puerto

Rico.

Requirements

There are very specific requirements and qualifications needed

for this deployment.

Due to the nature of this deployment, you will need to process

in as ARC volunteers. This includes passing a background check.

The ARC has indicated that it will cover all expenses for

transportation, lodging, and feeding while on deployment. ARC

will also provide liability coverage for volunteers. The only out-

of-pocket expense to the volunteer would be personal items

purchased during deployment.

ARRL and ARC will require training for volunteers being

deployed. ARC will provide general deployment training and

advanced training in working in austere environments. ARRL

will provide to ARC training on Amateur Radio equipment and

modes to be used, reporting guidelines, and operating

guidelines.

The deployment will be for up to 3 weeks.

Qualifications

• General class Amateur Radio license or higher

• Familiarity with WinLink, HF voice, and VHF simplex

communications

• Strong technical skills

• Ability to work under difficult conditions

• Ability to deploy for up to 3 weeks

New US Personal Radio (Part 95) Rules Take Effect

The FCC's rewrite of its rules for the Part 95 Personal Radio

Services takes effect from 28th September 2017.

Major changes include removing the 155-mile distance limit on

CB contacts (which had virtually never been observed anytime

the band was open in the past 50 years); addition of new Family

Radio Service (FRS) channels (shared with GMRS, the General

Mobile Radio Service); GMRS power restrictions on the

channels newly shared with FRS, and allowing GMRS licensees

to send text messages in addition to voice transmissions. (See

July CQ, p. 26, for a more comprehensive look at the changes in

various personal radio services.)

Yasme Foundation Grant to ARRL Ham Aid Fund

The Yasme Foundation has announced that it has made a grant

to ARRL’s Ham Aid fund, supporting Amateur Radio response to

the recent hurricanes in the US and Caribbean. The Ham Aid

fund, created in 2005 in response to the need for equipment


and resources to support the Amateur Radio response to

hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Wilma.

The group make equipment is available on loan to Amateur

Radio organizations during disaster response, when

communications equipment is unavailable.

The Yasme Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation organized

to conduct scientific and educational projects related to

Amateur Radio, including DXing and the introduction and

promotion of Amateur Radio in developing countries.

Last Surviving Bletchley Park 'Listener' Dies Aged 97

One of last surviving Bletchley Park 'listeners' dies

The Forces Network reports that one of the last surviving

Bletchley Park 'listeners’ who intercepted and passed Nazi

messages on to Allied codebreakers at Bletchley Park, has died

Alison Robins, 97, taught herself Morse code and German

during World War Two and stayed up all night eavesdropping

messages from U-boats around the British coast.

She rarely spoke about her wartime years, that were spent in

isolated points around the coastline, intercepting messages

from enemy fleets.

History of UK Special Contest Call Signs

Chris GM3WOJ has posted a short history of UK Special Contest

Call signs (SCCs) which have now been in use for 21 years

The holder of a UK Amateur Radio Full Licence, Full (Club)

Licence or Full (Reciprocal) Licence may apply for a Special

Contest Call sign (“SCC”). This call sign may only be used in

amateur radio contests of no more than 48 hours duration.

The call sign will be in the format ‘G’ or ‘M’, followed by a

chosen digit and a chosen suffix letter. Examples are G8Z or

M7R.

Chris recalls that representations to the Regulator to issue the

call signs began about 1990 but calls weren't issued until 1996.

Two Customizable Side Keys

Under the PTT button there are two side keys on GD-77. You

can use programming software to customize them as hot keys

based on your needs—Emergency On/Off, Scan On/Off, VOX

On/Off, Repeater/Talk around, Zone select, etc (Up to 20

options). Once set, those features can be easily achieved when

you press and hold or press and release the side keys.


Up to 5KM (3 Miles) Talking Range

Although GD-77 is only 3CM in body thickness, the talking range

can be as far as 5KM (3 Miles) under most circumstances. There

are other factors that affect the range of a two-way radio too

such as weather, exact frequency used, and obstructions.

Please note that extended transmit time may lead excessive

Now for the build:

First we needed to solder the header pins to the raspberry pi

board.

Second put the Rasberry Pi in the case:

Note: do NOT use the purple layer, it will break your SD card,

we broke 2 before determining that it was causing it.

Instead, use 4 nylon nuts for a short stand off for the raspberry

pi board in the case.

After completing the case build, place the ZumSpot on the

raspberry Pi header pins

Then short standoffs on case screws to allow for the ZumSpot.


The extra top cover (from extra case) will be used to finish the

new case, but a hole was needed for the antenna to go thru the

top.

Now to configure the hotspot

This is where we ran into a problem!

How do we connect it to the internet via wifi or LAN without a

LAN port to access it?

Well if you have a micro USB to LAN adapter that’s one way.

But we just put the Micro USB card in my Raspberry Pi 3

hotspot which has a LAN port, to configure the card.

After hooking the Rasberry Pi to a router for internet, we can

proceed.

On a PC on the same network open a browser and go to

http://pi-star/ which is your hotspot


You will get a message about the modem needs to be

configured the first time.

Click configuration in top right of screen

A pop up to log on as the admin follows.

Default Username: pi-star

Default Password: raspberry

This is where you choose the modem type which is

“ZumSpot – Rasberry Pi Hat (GPIO)”

Click apply changes

The DMR Configuration shows all the important settings that

need to be set, then apply changes

Next we configure the wifi so we don’t have to be wired to a

router

You should setup for your home wifi, work wifi, Phone tethering

(wifi), etc.

so you can use it anywhere you go.

This area shows that no wifi is connected

Click “configure wifi”

Press scan for networks


Then it will show what it found

If you see the one you want, press connect

It will show you the one you chose and a place to enter the

password for the wifi connection

Click “save and connect”

When finished you will have a list of wifi, that it will connect to

automatically if it sees it as you travel.

If you are connected via wifi, the screen should look like this

At this point we shut down the Rasberry Pi 3 and removed the

micro SD card and put it in the Rasberry Pi Zero, booted it.

Now you can enjoy the hotspot and digital radio.

What is Discord?

Discord is a free voice and text chatting app well suited for

gamers. Anyone can set up any server and have your squad

voice chatting within minutes. Before, TeamSpeak and Mumble

(and Ventrilo….and more) were the standard, but required

paying for servers or setting up your own. Discord takes the

work out of that.

It’s also become hugely popular with the rest of the internet –

YouTube channels, subreddits, and many special interest groups

(like ham radio) have started using it as a replacement to IRC

and VoIP chat programs which are hard to use for both the

users, moderators, and admins, and lack adequate mobile

device support.

Rant on Chat Apps

Sometimes it’s hard to decide what chat program to use. Slack,

Facebook Messenger, IRC, Skype, GroupMe, WhatsApp,

Telegram, Discord, Zello, Slack…the list is ever growing, but

currently here’s my favorites (because this is a blog after all!)

For groups of collegiate and like-aged (20-somethings) friends

intermittent user…i.e. me.

Mattermost is a good up-and-coming Open Source alternative

to Slack.

For all things international: Whatsapp for 1-1 chats, Telegram

for groups

YOTA uses Telegram for mass-group texting. I think they’re up

to 500 members now.

Island on the Air - New Website The new Islands on the Air (IOTA) website and integrated software system that will run the IOTA program are now online, with users being redirected from the old site to the new one and log in using their existing credentials. Amateur Satellite

FM Satellite Launch in November RadFxSat (Fox-1B) is scheduled for launch at 01:47 PST (09:47 UTC) on 10th November 2017. RadFxSat is one of four CubeSats making up the NASA ELaNa XIV mission, riding as secondary payloads aboard the Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS)-1 mission. JPSS-1 will launch on a Delta II from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California. RadFxSat is a partnership with Vanderbilt University ISDE and hosts four payloads for the study of radiation effects on commercial off the shelf components. RadFxSat features the Fox-1 style FM U/v repeater with a uplink on 435.250 MHz (67.0 Hz CTCSS) and a downlink on 145.960 MHz. Satellite and experiment telemetry will be downlinked via the “DUV” subaudible telemetry stream and can be decoded with the FoxTelem software. CAS-4A and CAS-4B Amateur Radio Satellite Transponders Activated The Amateur Radio linear (SSB/CW) inverting transponders on the CAS-4A and CAS-4B satellites were activated on 18th October 2017. CAMSAT’s Amateur Radio payloads piggybacked on the optical remote-sensing micro-satellites OVS-1A (CAS-4A) and OVS-1B (CAS-4B), launched on 15th June 2017. CAS-4A (call sign BJ1SK) has a CW telemetry beacon on 145.855 MHz, and 4.8 kB GMSK telemetry on 145.835 MHz. The uplink is 435.220 MHz, the downlink is 145.870 MHz (20-kHz passband). CAS-4B (call sign BJ1SL) has a CW telemetry beacon on 145.910 MHz, and 4.8 kB GMSK telemetry at 145.890 MHz. FalconSAT-3 was built throughout 2005 and 2006 by cadets and faculty in the Space Systems Research Center at the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO, and launched in 2007 on an Atlas V. After serving in scientific and training roles, the Academy has now made the satellite available for Amateur radio use. The satellite is in a 35.4 degree inclination orbit, with an approximate altitude of 465 to 476 km. The Packet Bulletin Board System is operating at 9600 baud with a 145.840 uplink, and 435.103 downlink. Output power is 1 watt, and the downlink is continuously on. Digipeating is enabled for live QSOs, but unattended digipeating operations is not authorized at this time. Current Keplerian elements can be found in the AMSAT distributed Keplerian elements. Anyone want to edit their DMR ID user info? Go ahead, just

create an account on DMR Track and you will be able to edit it

at any time.

Keep in mind though, the database still only gets compiled once

every 24 hours so it won’t show up until then. (I may increase

this interval though).

Also anyone who has good databases created and wants them

imported (talking to you Italy etc) just send me what you want

BM TG31488 Bridge is now in service to the Texas-Nexus Digital

Network.

It links C4FM repeaters across the state. DMR tested across the

network today perfectly.

This was just another fun project to link radios.

New Digital Voice Repeater for Southern Ireland Throughout 2017, the Southern Ireland Repeater Group began building their first digital voice repeater which consisted of interfacing an MMDVM board with a Motorola MTR2000 UHF repeater.

After a few months of construction, the project is now completed, installed and has been tested in Waterford City at it's new permanent location at Carronadavderg (301m) near Clashmore in West Waterford. The installation took place on Friday 28th July 2017. The repeaters callsign is EI7CDD, output power 30w and it is capable of DMR, DStar, Fusion (C4FM) and Analog operation. Operating frequency is 439.650 MHz with a shift of -9 MHz (DVU52) which is one of the 70cm channels allocated to digital voice in Ireland and the UK. WB5OYM Dial M. Stone, silent key 12/1998 ------------------------------------------------------- Carl Smith, N4AA, SK QRZ DX and The DX Magazine Publisher and Editor Carl Smith, N4AA, of Asheville, North Carolina, has passed away on 20th October 2017, aged 77.

Smith was an active Ham, with interest throughout the hobby including being an active DX'er, Carl was first licensed in 1954 as WN0YFT. In 2012, Smith was inducted into the CQ DX Hall of Fame. In the 1970s, Smith was instrumental in the formation of the Western Carolina Amateur Radio Society and served a few terms as president. Through WCARS, he instituted the annual Asheville Hamfest. WCARS became a Volunteer Examiner Coordinator in the 1980s. He also established the KB4C Miriam Smith Award, in memory of his late wife. The award, presented annually by the ARRL Roanoke Division, honors an Amateur Radio operator from Western North Carolina who has demonstrated an active commitment to public service and emergency communication through ARES/RACES. Smith was among the founders of the SouthEastern DX and Contesting Organization (SEDCO) W4DXCC Convention, and his wife’s call sign is used on the air at the annual convention and for various operating activities.
