K-12 Education Experience

West Berwick Elementary School Owner: Berwick Area School District | Columbia County, PA

The new West Berwick Elementary School consists of a multitude of structural elements. The most interesting element of the project is the library roof which will be a green roof covered in vegetation. The library roof structure is constructed of compound radius steel framing rolling in two directions. An observation balcony allows student to conduct projects on a portion of this roof. For the remainder of the structure, the two-story classroom wing is to be constructed of load bearing masonry and concrete plank floors and roof. The multipurpose room and cafeteria is to be constructed of precast wall panels and prestressed double tee roof framing.

Project Statistics Location: Berwick Borough Columbia County, PA Size: 79,100 SF Construction Cost: $20 Million Building Structure: Steel frame, precast tee, and hollow core planks

K-12 Education Experience

Myers Elementary School Owner: Bellwood-Antis School District | Blair County, PA Bellwood-Antis School District needed more classroom area but did not have enough space to accommodate all their needs. Keller Engineers proposed constructing new classrooms above the existing building. However, the existing structure did not have the capacity to bear the load of an additional floor; therefore, we designed a structural system independent of the existing framing. This addition was completed in two phases. Phase I was to add a second floor onto the existing one-story school. An independently supported precast second floor was designed and constructed over the existing classroom wing. Phase II, was a new addition. Keller Engineers’ structural responsibilities included analyzing the existing structure for modified loads and the design of all structural elements.

Project Statistics Location: Bellwood Borough Blair County, PA Size: 88,000 SF Construction Cost: $12 Million Building Structure: Prestressed concrete, steel frame, and load bearing masonry walls

5

K-12 Education Experience

Huntingdon Area Middle School Owner: Huntingdon Area School District | Huntingdon County, PA

The new two-story school is being constructed on the existing Middle School parking lot. Because the soil is highly expansive, the foundations for the first-floor construction are caissons to bedrock with concrete grade beams and shallow precast double tees. The construction is a combination of precast walls and roof planks, as well as load bearing masonry walls. The existing Middle School will be demolished upon completion of the new school.

Project Statistics Location: Huntingdon Borough Huntingdon County, PA Size: 110,000 SF Construction Cost: $20 Million Building Structure: Precast walls and roof planks, and load bearing masonry walls

K-12 Education Experience

A.L. Wilson Elementary School Owner: Albert Gallatin Area School District | Fayette County, PA

This school is a PlanCon project which was undertaken by the District in order to consolidate two out-of-date elementary schools into one new facility following a district-wide Facility Feasibility Study. The school - designed to receive a LEED rating of ‘Silver’ from the Green Building Council - has 3 kindergarten classrooms, 16 regular classrooms (grades K through 5th), a dedicated combination music/art classroom, a library, a computer lab, and a multi-purpose room. Several sky lights provide natural sunlight.

Hospitality Experience

Nora Roberts’ - Inn Boonsboro Owner: Boonsboro | Washington County, MD

Famous Novelist Nora Roberts purchased The Inn Boonsboro in 2006. The Inn, built in the late 1700’s, has changed ownership four times and has been known as the Eagle Hotel, the Commercial Hotel, and the Boone Hotel. Most recently, the neglected structure sat empty for many years. Located on the Square in Boonsboro, MD, the Inn was the first stone building constructed in historic Boonsboro. Keller Engineers’ structural team was responsible for the design of all framing members and foundations. This was a difficult assignment due to the proximity of the adjacent structures, and the design which maintains the Inn’s original appearance.

On February 22, 2008, during construction, a fire swept through the structure nearly destroying the Inn. Work to rebuild the historic structure began almost immediately and the Inn opened on February, 17, 2009.
