The Church will always be the people, the followers of Jesus who gather in community – whether it is in a physical building, or virtually online.

We are so pleased that you have joined us today. You are most welcome here. God loves everyone, no exceptions, as we genuinely celebrate the diversity and beauty of God’s creation.

We hope that you can easily follow and join in our service. But most of all, we hope that you can simply relax and be present with us.

The Fifth Sunday of LentMarch 22, 2020, 10:30am

WELCOME

Church might be something you do often or have wanted to do for a while. It may be kind of scary or really exciting for you. We want you to feel comfortable being here; please know that you are most welcome.

All kinds of people come into St. Mark’s week to week and you may find yourself next to a lifelong member, a new-ish one, or someone who has walked in for the first time. We hope that our service will be easy for you to follow and join in, but please don’t worry that you have to do anything except relax and be present with us. At the time of communion we gather around the altar in a circle; wherever you are in your spiritual journey we invite you to participate as fully as you would like.

We love children and are delighted to have them in our services. Books and art materials are available on the risers for use whenever children would like during the service.

If you would like to learn more about becoming a member of St. Mark’s, or if you have any questions or concerns, please talk to an usher. If you complete a Visitor’s Card, we can add you to the parish email list.

We are so happy that you’re here! Welcome!

Reader A READING FROM THE BOOK OF EZEKIEL [37:1-14].

The hand of the Lord came upon me, and he brought me out by the spirit of the Lord and set me down in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones. He led me all around them; there were very many lying in the valley, and they were very dry. He said to me, “Mortal, can these bones live?” I answered, “O Lord God, you know.” Then he said to me, “Prophesy to these bones, and say to them: O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord. Thus says the Lord God to these bones: I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live. I will lay sinews on you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live; and you shall know that I am the Lord.”

So I prophesied as I had been commanded; and as I prophesied, suddenly there was a noise, a rattling, and the bones came together, bone to its bone. I looked, and there were sinews on them, and flesh had come upon them, and skin had covered them; but there was no breath in them. Then he said to me, “Prophesy to the breath, prophesy, mortal, and say to the breath: Thus says the Lord God: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live.” I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived, and stood on their feet, a vast multitude.

Then he said to me, “Mortal, these bones are the whole house of Israel. They say, ‘Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost; we are cut off completely.’ Therefore prophesy, and say to them, Thus says the Lord God: I am going to open your graves, and bring you up from your graves, O my people; and I will bring you back to the land of Israel. And you shall know that I am the Lord, when I open your graves, and bring you up from your graves, O my people. I will put my spirit within you, and you shall live, and I will place you on your own soil; then you shall know that I, the Lord, have spoken and will act,” says the Lord.

PSALM 104: 25-35, 37

Led by Thomas Walker

God, how fertile your genius! You shape each thing, you fill the worldwith what you do.

I watch the sea, wide and deep, filled with fish, large and small, with ships that ply their trade, and your own toy, Leviathan.

All look to you for foodwhen they hunger;you provide it and they feed. You open your hand, they feast;you turn away, they fear.

You steal their breath, they drop back into dust.Breathe into them, they rise;the face of the earth comes alive!

Let God’s glory endureand the Lord delight in creating. One look from God, earth quivers;one touch, and mountains erupt.

I will sing to my God,make music for the Lordas long as I live.Let my song give joy to Godwho is a joy to me.

I will bless you, Lord!Hallelujah!

Reader A READING FROM THE ACTS OF THE APOSTLES [2:1-21].

When the day of Pentecost had come, the disciples were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.

Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs-- in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.” All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” But others sneered and said, “They are filled with new wine.”

But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, “Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:

`In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams.

Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy.

And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist.

The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day.

Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’ “

GOSPEL ANTHEM Led by Larry Marshall

Stuart K. Hine

Gospeller The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John [15:26-27: 16:4b-15].People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus said to his disciples, ”When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, he will testify on my behalf. You also are to testify because you have been with me from the beginning.

7

“I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. But now I am going to him who sent me; yet none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts. Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because they do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will see me no longer; about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been condemned.

“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

Leader Christ has gathered the church in unity through the Spirit. With sure hope, let us pray:

People Lord, hear our prayer.

Leader Maker of all things, in the beginning, you created heaven and earth, and entrusted the earth to the human race. We have disrupted its peace with violence and corrupted its purity with our greed. Prevent us from ravaging creation, and inspire us to insure just and equitable access to and distribution of its bounty. Renew our world, in this day, with your grace and mercy.

People Lord, hear our prayer.

Leader Life of the world, your breathed life into the flesh your created. Now, by your Spirit, breathe new life into the children of earth. Guard and strengthen all who live and work in this community. Preserve the people of every nation from tyrants, heal them of disease, and protect them in times of upheaval and disaster. Turn hatred into love, sorrow into joy, and war into peace.

People Lord, hear our prayer.

Leader Lover of concord, you desire the unity of all Christians that they may proclaim your salvation to the ends of the earth. Set aflame the whole church with the fire of your Spirit. We pray for Michael, our Presiding Bishop; for Andrew, Allen and Mary, our Bishops; for all bishops and other ministers; and for all who serve in your church. Unite us to stand in the world as a sign of your love.

People Lord, hear our prayer.

Leader God Most High, in Jesus you show us authority that rules not by power or might, but serves in obedience to your will. We pray for all in authority over us and the nations of the world. Deliver them from vain ambitions that they may govern in wisdom, compassion, and justice.

People Lord, hear our prayer.

Leader God of mercy, through your Spirit you supply every human need. Heal the sick in body, mind, and spirit. Lift up the depressed. Befriend those who grieve. Comfort the anxious. Stand with all victims of abuse, violence, hatred, crime, and natural disasters. We pray for those who have asked the prayers of this church (you are invited to pray for those who have asked the prayers of this church, as they are listed below, and to offer your own prayers in silence or

10

aloud): For Eddie, Avon, Elsa, Gregory, Luis, Bill, Clyde, Lorna, Preston, Harald, Gregory, Preston, Gianfranco and family, Trinity, David, the Kurtz/Auzenne family, Carla, Billy, Rebecca, Emmett, Linda, Mark, Olive, Sandra, Alisa, Ana, Kristin, Martha, Rafaelle, Mrs. Wong, Mary Jo, Lesllie, Floridia, Elfreda, EJay, Ken, Ernest, Mary, Kathie, Rebecca, Alexi, Hannah, and those we now name (please offer your prayers in silence or aloud). Fill all people with your Holy Spirit that they may bear each other’s burdens.

People Lord, hear our prayer.

Leader Eternal God, your love is stronger than death, and your passion more fierce than the grave. We rejoice in the lives of those whom you have drawn into your eternal embrace. We remember those who have died: Marcia, Kinjie, Douglass, Mary, David, Carole, Marla, Doug, Brenda, Arthur, Hans, Wesley, Avis, Naomi, Bill, Richard and those we now name (please offer your prayers in silence or aloud). Keep us in joyful communion with them until we join the saints of every people and nation, gathered before your throne in ceaseless praise.

People Lord, hear our prayer.

Leader God of truth, we acknowledge the pervasive presence of racism in our country’s origins, in our institutions and politics, in our diocese and its churches, and in our hearts. Some of us are much too familiar with racism’s many violent aggressions. Others of us, particularly White Americans, have at times chosen the false comfort of ignorance over the cost and freedom of truth. For this willful disregard and the harm it has caused, we repent. For the many ways—social, economic, and political—that white supremacy has accrued benefits to some of us at the expense of others, we repent. For the ways that racist ideology has bled into all our hearts and corrupted our minds, we repent. Grant us courage to pursue your truth and be found by it, to listen and be heard, and to respond ever more faithfully to your call to justice.

Presider Ever living God, as you sent upon the disciples the promised gift of the Holy Spirit, look upon your church and open our hearts to the power of the Holy Spirit. Kindle in us the fire of your love, and strengthen our lives for service in your kin-dom; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Emilee Walker-Cornetta
