TODAY’S LITURGY

FIRST READING: Daniel 7:13-14 SECOND READING: Revelation 1:5-8 GOSPEL: John 18:33-37

Year ‘B’ of the liturgical year comes to a close, during which most of the Gospel of Mark was read on Sundays. This last Sunday of the year, the feast of Christ the King, uses John instead of Mark. This is probably because when Jesus comes before Pilate in Mark to discuss Pilate’s question: “Are you the king of the Jews?” the dialogue falls flat. All Jesus says in answer is ‘You say so,” after which he goes silent. In John there is a bit of dialogue between Jesus and Pilate.

When Pope Pius XI established this feast in 1925 it is interesting to note that the whole encyclical establishing the feast emphasized the exalted Christ as risen, universal king. Thus the focus was on the risen Christ’s reign over all.

But the kingship of Jesus being argued with Pilate involves the title “king of the Jews.” That title after all, is what Pilate had had placed on the cross: “Jesus of Nazareth, king of the Jews.”

In 1925, Pope Pius did not mention that Jesus was identified by the title “king of the Jews” in the Gospels in connection with promulgating the feast of Christ the King. The times were not ecumenical enough. Certainly no Church leader came even close to the strides forward made by Pope John Paul II in the Church’s relationship with Judaism, following the lead of Vatican II with its declaration Nostra Aetate in 1965.

In those pre-ecumenical days ( and pre-holocaust days ), the Church would have reacted little differently than Pilate at Jesus being called “king of the Jews.” Christ, as king of the universe was more the focus of Pius’ encyclical. He admits the use of “king” in connection with Christ is metaphorical in a sense. In fact one of the only mentions of “the Jews” in that encyclical was to note that ‘the Jews” (and even the Apostles) wrongly supposed that the Messiah would restore the liberties and the kingdom of Israel.

The readings chosen for this feast, however, require us to consider this title “king of the Jews” as a meditation in and of itself, the exalted Christ as king of the universe notwithstanding. In John this title for Jesus becomes the ultimate reason that Pilate became involved in the trial of Jesus. If Jesus claimed to be the king of the Jews, then he was rebelling against the power of the Roman Caesar, who alone had power to name kings or to depose them.

Pilate’s question (“Are you the king of the Jews”) comes out of the blue. Prior to his question there has been little information about this charge. We can only speculate where Pilate would have gotten the idea. In only two other spots in John’s Gospel is there even a vague reference to kingship and Christ. In 6:15 the author makes an editorial aside about kingship following the feeding of the multitude. In 12:12-15 John suggests Jesus is fulfilling an Isaiah prophecy.

The Romans would have been concerned if Jesus had made himself a king, or was made so by others because the Romans would have regarded that as a threat and an act of insurrection. In fact his kingship becomes the ultimate crime for which Jesus is crucified: “Jesus of Nazareth King of the Jews.”

Pondering the image of kingship, is very difficult for people in the U.S. who chose to shun royalty on the principle that all are created equal. and endowed by the Creator with certain unalienable rights among which are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Nonetheless, to Christ be glory and power forever!

group. Have you ever wanted to share your feelings on the readings and just couldn’t find the right outlet? On Wednesday night of each week, come and join the "Walk through the Garden", Reflection Sharing group. We meet and share our own personal reflections of the daily readings and the meditations from the Word Among Us. Since we meet on Wednesday, we begin with that day’s daily readings. After a hearty discussion and sharing, if time permits, we then move on to the other readings from the past week. Each session begins and ends with prayer. This is a "come as you are" type of sharing group, with no formal structure. We follow the lead of the Holy Spirit. The sharing begins, in the parish office building, promptly at 6:30 pm and ends around 7:30pm. Be prepared for a "nontraditional relaxing approach" to sharing the scriptures. You can participate as much or as little as you choose. Those parishioners that already are "Walking through the Garden" have enjoyed this friendly family fellowship! All are welcome to attend, bring your Word Among Us and be prepared to Share, Learn and Listen! For more information contact Devin Cousins, 740-772-5012
