Dear Spike Out Team Members, Coaches, Families, and Friends,

The Clerc Center community warmly welcomes you to the Model Secondary School for the Deaf, on the campus of Gallaudet University. As your hosts for Spike Out XX, we hope you find your stay at MSSD fun and rewarding. Our teachers, staff and students look for-ward to meeting you and making you feel at home.

Participation in the Spike Out tournament demonstrates a strong commitment to your sport and we recognize that each team has carefully prepared, investing many hours in practice, drills and competitive play. We wish each of the participating teams the best of luck.

We also hope all of you enjoy a pleasant weekend here in Washington, DC. This time is not only for athletic competition; it is also a great opportunity to build new friendships and strengthen old ones.

This event would not be possible without the tremendous amount of support from our community members and volunteers. We would like to thank everybody for their hard work in ensuring an exciting weekend full of competition and sportsmanship among our schools.

Sincerely,

Marianne Belsky, Chief Academic Officer

Nicole Sutliffe, Chief Administrative Officer

WELCOME TO MSSD!

MESSAGE FROM JOHN CASTRESE, ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

On behalf of the Model Secondary School for the Deaf (MSSD), I would like to welcome you to our school and thank you for being a part of the Spike Out XX Volleyball Tournament and our Homecoming weekend. It has been a long time since MSSD has been able to host a national deaf volleyball tournament of this caliber. The first-ever Spike Out Volleyball Tournament originated at the Indiana School for the Deaf in 1999 under Athletic Director and volleyball coach, Brian Bippus. MSSD last hosted the Spike Out Tournament in 2000. We are very excited to carry on this tradition! The six participating schools are in Washington, D.C., competing for the Spike Out XX Championship. The schools involved in the tournament share the same goals. We all want our student-athletes to have a positive experience, a great sense of belonging, unity within their team, and most importantly a great sense of pride fostered by the entire Deaf community. There is no other place to be but here! We also want to welcome the Alabama School for the Deaf (ASD) football team and cheerleading squad to be a part of this experience. We are excited to continue our new tradition of competing against ASD during either of our school’s Homecoming weekend. This weekend is a perfect opportunity for all of our schools to experience this unique and fun-filled weekend. I am proud to work with some of the most talented and dedicated volunteers at the MSSD. This tournament requires a great deal of their time and commitment to make all of this possible. It is our hope that you have a memorable experience during your stay. From the nation’s capital, we want to thank you for being here with us. Onward! John Castrese MSSD Athletic Director

The Spike Out Volleyball Tournament was originated at the Indiana School for the Deaf in 1999 under the Athletic Director and Volleyball Coach Brian Bippus, who envisioned a national deaf volleyball tour-nament bringing together outstanding teams and athletes. The idea was to bring top teams to one site and let them “spike each other out” to claim the national championship.
