Welcome!Welcome to the NCFR Conference!

It has struck me over the past few years that, far too often, the dialogue and rhetoric we hear about families in our society focuses on the economic and social “costs” of families — for example, the

costs of basic family needs such as child care, health care, schooling, parental leave, and elder care.

We spend much less time considering the ways families maintain and sustain our society. At the 2017 NCFR Annual Conference, the goal is to challenge scholars, practitioners, and policymakers to reframe the narrative on families and ask: How do families — all types of families — function as catalysts, at multiple levels, for a vibrant, healthy, and well-functioning society?

To that end, we have some exciting plenary speakers who will address how families shape everything from disability policy to neighborhoods, to the vibrancy of our economy, to laws and policies around immigration. We also have excellent symposia that highlight our NCFR scholars’ outstanding research and outreach efforts. I want to thank all of the NCFR Section chairs who went above and beyond to put together an exciting, provocative, and exceptional program. And thanks to the NCFR staff for dedicating countless hours to this conference.

I look forward to sharing an inspirational and exciting conference with all of you!

Maureen Perry-Jenkins, Ph.D. Conference Program Chair

DEPARTMENT OF FAMILY SCIENCE SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH

Located just eight miles from the nation’s capital, the Department of Family Science at the University of Maryland offers four programs: Ph.D. degrees in Maternal & Child Health and Family Science; M.S. Couple & Family Therapy; B.S. Family Science. The Family Science program provides interdisciplinary training in research, theory, policy and practice relevant to the health and well-being of families in contemporary society. Unique aspects of our training include: a focus on family health and well-being, engagement with culturally diverse populations, research opportunities with NIH and other federal agencies, clinical couple and family therapy, and work in public policy settings. The Department houses the Center for Healthy Families, which provides training and research for the Couple & Family Therapy master’s program.

The Department of Family Science has a long history of involvement in NCFR, including participation in leadership roles (President, Program Chair, Section Chair, Board Member); annual strong presence with the conference program, and an active student chapter, Maryland Council of Family Relations (MCFR).
