Donations

Thank You, Summer Volunteers and Interns!

We are so proud of all your hard work —hundreds of hours of work!—this summer helping us serve lunch, read to kids, and help make a difference at the library.

We are sorry to share the news that our Board President Sandy Super passed away on Saturday, August 3. Sandy served the Addison Public Library for 16 years after first being appointed to the Board in June 2003 and later elected in '05. Since then, Sandy went on to serve as Board President 9 times, including her most recent role, as well as serving as Treasurer and Vice President twice, respectively. During her time on our Board, Sandy guided us through a number of changes, including planning and building our current li-brary, hiring our fist Teen Services librarian, reorganizing our staff and creating the Community Engagement depart-ment, renovating our current building, and hiring our first Social Services Coordinator. We are incredibly grateful for her service and support, and we will miss her dearly.

Congratulations to the Career Online High School Class of 2019!

Simpson (left), Safsaf (middle), and Schira (right) cut their cake after officially graduating from COHS.

On Saturday, July 27, the Addison Public Library celebrated its Class of 2019 Career Online High School graduates— Ruth Joy Safsaf, Ashley Schira, and Cynthia Simpson— with an intimate graduation ceremony.

Career Online High School (COHS) is an online program in which participants can earn an accredited high school diploma while gaining career skills and graduate ready to work in the field of their choice.

“[Career Online High School] was very doable. I was still able to work and take care of my family and do the program at my pace,” said Simpson. “I even had coaches that spurred me on.”

Fellow 2019 grad Schira also credited the flexibility of the program as a major benefit of pursuing a degree through COHS.

“You could work at any time, day or night, that’s probably the best part,” she said. “It’s convenient how easy it is to complete the process. I had about two and a half years of high school left and [COHS] took me about a year.”

Students have access to an academic coach, certified instructors, and technical support while they work on their degree,

but each graduate credited the library—Adult Services Specialist Mayuri Jakate specifically—with being a major asset to the COHS program.

“The staff here, Mayuri in particular, were so sup-portive,” said Safsaf. “Mayuri was very encouraging. She helped motivate me by seeing my progress and inspiring me to finish.”

Jakate said she gets great satisfaction from working with the COHS students.

“I like to see their faces when they graduate, and see how much satisfaction they’re getting when they finish,” said Jakate with a smile.
