TRAINING ON RADIO JOCKEY

O n the evening of February 12, 2018 we visited BIG

FM 92.7 Radio station which is situated at Bharath Mall.

When we entered, they warmly welcomed us. The radio

station was completely decorated. It made us think what

the occasion was. Later, we came to know from MJ Joel

that they were celebrating the 12 anniversary of BIG FM

92.7. The next day they were going to celebrate the

World Radio Day which doubled the reason of their cele-

bration. The production head of BIG FM 92.7 Mr Arun

Vishwanath greeted us and asked us to introduce our-

selves. We, then introduced ourselves as future RJ (Radio

Jockey). Then the actual learning session began. We ac-

companied MJ Joel to the server room. He explained to

us that the server room was the heart of the radio station

and we were allowed to enter only if we were accompa-

nied by him. We still remember him telling that one wire

replacement can lead to a difference or a damage. He told

us that the scheduling of songs were done there and even

the smallest of the errors could be traced with the server

room. Then we went to recording room where MJ Joel

told us about the setup kept there. He told us that partic-

ular setup was much more advanced when compared to

the set ups in the other radio stations. We were amazed

looking at two small radios kept there. Then we went to

the next room where we met RJ Spoorthi. She told us

about the scheduling of songs, how it plays, how to go

live, how mood mapping is done and so on. She also told

that T-series songs were not played. Then she asked us

to do a recording and two of our friends did it. We asked

her questions regarding outdoor broadcasting and about

the job oriented opportunities in the near future. They

answered all our questions in a convincing way.

Industry-Academia Meet at St Aloysius College

F ebruary 27, 2018 - In an attempt to align the industry

and academics, and open up a free flow of that abundant

knowledge and experience between the two, St Aloysius

College (Autonomous), Mangalore, created an opportunity

for interaction between the domains.

Prominent industry leaders met with the management

and faculty of St Aloysius College in the campus. Those

present from the industry were - Mr Walter DSouza - Fer-

nandes Brothers, Mr Prakash Kalbavi - Kalbavi Cashews,

Mr Gaurav Hegde - President KSIA, Mr Ajith Kamath -

Ajith Enterprises, Mr Isaac Vas - Merger Soft-Drinks, Mr

Ananthesh Prabhu - Aruna Industries, Ms Sulaj Kini -

Bell Paints, Mr Mithun Bhat - Kakunje Polybacks, Mr

Swarna Sundar - 3 Man's Dinki Ice-Cream, Mr Annapa

Pai - Ace Foods. The academia was represented by Fr Dr

Praveen Martis SJ – Principal, Fr Denzil Lobo SJ – Direc-

tor of AIMIT, Fr Pradeep Sequeira – Finance Administra-

tor, Fr Dr Leo D‘Souza – Director of Applied Biology, Dr

Narahari – Registrar, Dr Vincent Mascarenhas – Dean,

Int‘l Programs, and Faculty of Bio and Food Science Tech-

nology, Bioinformatics, Physics, Chemistry, Microbiology,

Botany, Zoology and other sciences.

The rare event organized by the institution‘s Foreign Col-

laboration Cell provided a forum to translate the gap be-

tween industry-related activities and academics, thus far

considered a not so indistinct boundary between them,

into new prospects of opportunities for both. The construc-

tive outcome, as result of this discussion on reconciling

the differences would immensely benefit both; it would

endorse the prevailing rich scientific intellect engaged in

the use of in-house high-end equipment of research facili-

ties at St Aloysius; and offer a quick, quality and time-

bound turnaround related to products and processes much

sought by the industry.

The visibility given to various departments‘ scientific re-

search and in-depth knowledge in areas such as - analyt-

ics, certifications, and production and quality enhance-

ment techniques, to name a few, opened up discussion on

the application of that innate strength that could be em-

ployed in various industry processes and product manu-

facturing areas. The capability of the laboratories, equip-

ment and the work done in them by the highly qualified

and experienced faculty were seen as a potential talent

that could be invested into - startups - to their application

in quality and production enhancement of existing indus-

try processes.

The conclusive focus was on establishing a continuous

dialogue between the two areas to build an environment

for constant exchange of ideas, resources, talent, and

opportunities for other activities. The benefit of this

interaction would engage both sides in joint project

work, placements, training, industry/academia visits,

exploring of new areas of collaborative work, and open

up of new career opportunities for the students. The re-

newed awareness in the industry and academia would

thus move toward infusing and encouraging that much-

needed spirit of entrepreneurship, industriousness, and

fortitude for challenge in students. It would therefore

play a productive role in standardizing the divergence.
