JCPS will conduct the 2012-13 Comprehensive School Survey from Monday, February 4th

through Friday, February 22nd. The survey is administered to all classified and certified staff

members, all parents/guardians, and all elementary students in grades four and five. All

parents/guardians are encouraged to complete the survey online, but they can also fill out a

printed version. Watch for an upcoming E-Blast which will include survey link information.

Everyone is encouraged to participate in the important annual survey, which identifies specific

district needs and helps district staff members develop strategies to ensure student success.

Participating in this survey ensures that your voice will become an integral part of the district’s

decision-making process. Your opinions are important, and the district values your input. Thanks

for your participation…Greathouse needs a large response rate from our families to reflect the

high levels of parent involvement we have in the traditional program!

I am happy to share with you that 15 of our classroom audio enhancement systems have

arrived and are already in use in classrooms…the remaining 13 systems should be here by the end

of this month. This technology projects the teacher’s voice through a large speaker by way of a

small microphone worn around the neck or clipped to a shirt. Students may use an additional

microphone while sharing their thinking or their work with the class. It is easier to focus on what

the speaker is saying when it is so easy to hear what they are saying. We could not have

accomplished this technology goal so quickly without your support…the PTA Fun Run and our

Cashbook coupon book sales made this new technology possible. Teachers and students are

excited about our audio systems, thanks again for helping make this happen at Greathouse!

We will begin work on our 2013-2014 school budget this month by forming an ad-hoc committee

to make recommendations for allocations of general school funds to our SBDM Council. If you

have expertise in planning or budgeting or would like to be a part of this committee, let me know.

Budget committee meetings are tentatively scheduled for the mornings of February 7th, 14th, and

21st from 8:15-8:45 a.m.

Finally, continue to stay on top of what your student is learning each day. Our teachers do a

wonderful job communicating weekly learning targets. I hope you see these in your weekly

newsletter or on the class website. This communication is also a great way to stay on top of

homework and project due dates as well as other important school and classroom dates. Do you

know your child’s reading goal for the 4th grading period? Did their STAR reading and math

assessments show growth? Is your child performing at grade level? Teachers are in the process of

conducting our second round of parent-teacher conferences. Our goal is to meet with each

student’s family at least twice during the school year to discuss growth as well as areas for

improvement. Feel free to contact us if you need assistance meeting goals to be successful in our

program.

New GH Arrival Procedures

New arrival procedures were implemented when students returned from winter

break. Students in grades 2-5 now report directly to the hallway outside their

classroom door. Kindergarten and 1st grade students continue to report to the

gym. The time between 8:30-8:55 a.m. is designated as Independent Reading

Time (IDR) for students. We are always trying to provide students with enough

IDR time during the school day and these additional minutes help us move closer

to that goal.

Teachers report that students are not only coming into their classrooms more

quickly, but they are also entering the classroom ready to learn… more focused

and orderly. Students have additional classroom minutes to complete morning

assignments as well as to prepare for their day.

All students should have a book or two that they carry in their backpack so that

they will have available reading material during this time. Additional IDR time

will assist our students in reaching their reading and Accelerated Reader

goals…ask your child about their reading goal for the 4th grading period. They

should be able to share this information with you!

You are invited to The Greathouse Talent Show!

Please join us for a showcase of singing, dancing, skits, and

musical performances by Greathouse students on Friday,

February 22, from 6:30 - 8:30 pm.

Rules and Expectations

Children need and want clear limits or boundaries, even though they may

sometimes fight against them. Rules, expectations, and limits provide

structure, but they need to be specific because when kids don’t clearly

understand what’s expected of them, it can lead to conflict.

Setting Family Rules:

Keep rules simple and easy to understand.

Keep the number of rules low.

Repeat the rules often.

Establish what happens when rules are broken.

Have “Do” rules as well as “Don’t” rules.

Change the rules as kids change and grow.

Expect that all members of the family respect and follow the rules. Make

sure the rules are ones that really matter. For example:

Treat everyone respectfully

Listen to each other

No name-calling or put-downs

Absolutely no hitting, punching or slapping

Everyone puts away their personal property

No yelling

Happy February! As the second half of the year is now in full swing, the PTA is starting to

form the Nominating Committee which will work to fill open Executive Board and Board

of Managers positions for the 2013-2014 school year. The PTA is looking for involved and

connected parents to sit on the committee. Once formed, the Nominating Committee

will meet several times and correspond via email frequently over the next few months to

find candidates to fill our open positions. As always, quite a few of our committee chairs

have children moving on to middle school, creating vacancies on the PTA Board of

Managers. We need you to fill the positions! Some of the open chair positions are:

Be Your Best

Soup Labels

Fifth Grade Committee

Hearing/Vision Screening

Outdoor Beautification

KY Kids Day

Recycling

Reflections

Please consider becoming a committee chairperson for one of these, or any other, PTA

committees. We need your help and welcome new volunteers. Without the help of

volunteers, the PTA cannot carry out the programs that benefit all of our children.

If you would like to be part of the Nominating Committee or are interested in chairing a

PTA committee, please contact me at [email protected] or call me at 417-0668.

The next PTA meeting is on Thursday, February 7th at 9:30 in the cafeteria. Come and

find out what is going on at Greathouse.

Hope to see you around school!

SAFETY UPDATE

Safety continues to be a priority at Greathouse. We routinely practice for all types of

emergency situations: evacuation, lockdown, and shelter-in-place. Knowing what to do

and where to go alleviates fears as well as prepares students and staff for actual

emergencies.

You may notice that we are being more vigilant about our safety plans and procedures.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we refine our systems to ensure the

safest, most efficient building possible.

We ask everyone entering the building to use our doorbell and intercom system.

Office staff must identify everyone entering the building prior to unlocking the door. Be

prepared to state your name and the nature of your visit when an office staff greets you

on this system.

Parents and visitors to our building are required to sign in and document the reason for

their visit. An identification sticker is issued to everyone when they sign in, and it must

be worn for the duration of your visit. You will also notice that all staff members will be

wearing their JCPS issued staff ID badge. This means that every adult in the building will

have a form of identification (sticker, badge, or tag) displayed at all times.

A big change that we have made is our process for classroom parties on each of our

three party days: fall harvest, holiday, and valentine. We now require a detailed sign-in

process which will begin at 1:55 p.m. on party days. Sign-in sheets will be available at the

front door…room parents and party coordinator names will be pre-printed as these

should be the only adults present in the classroom during the party. Be prepared to

present identification and to wear an issued ID tag. We are hopeful that the pre-printed

sheets will speed up our check-in process so that everyone will be checked in prior to 2:15

p.m.

While these changes may be a bit more inconvenient to some folks, we are committed to

providing the safest possible environment for our students and staff. Thanks for your

understanding as we implement these additional precautionary measures to ensure

everyone’s safety. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact Mrs. Davis or

Mrs. Walker at 485-8259.
