Dear Alums, Friends and Current Families, As I enter my 10th school year as an administrator of St. Vincent-St. Mary High School, I see many changes that continue to happen here atop a hill in Akron. We continue to make improvements to the campus, both inside and outside. I realize that none of those improvements could have happened without the continued support of our alumni and STVM community. This goes hand in hand with our continued dedication to provide all students here at STVM, the best education as well as, the moral and spiritual guidance according to the Marianist sponsorship.

STVM is a Marianist sponsored high school, “A Catholic School in the Marianist Tradition”

What does that mean?

There are five characteristics of a Marianist education. The core values derived from these characteristics are as follows: • Educate for formation in faith • Provide an integral, quality education • Educate in the family spirit • Educate for service, justice and peace • Educate for adaptation and change

Our students are at the center of what we do. Our mission as a Marianist sponsored school, is helping students experience the loving, creative presence of God in their lives as Mary did.

As President of STVM, I am committed to living this mission by ensuring our students are provided with the Marianist based education that will enable them to enter the real world as faith-filled, compassionate leaders of the future.

Motivated, involved, caring, creative-these words best describe STVM students. Every student is unique, which is why we believe education needs to be personalized.

We believe in our traditional, well-rounded experiences. However at STVM, the total student experience provides several opportunities for students to explore something they’re passionate about. We are blessed to have faculty and staff that believe in helping our students in finding their passion. Community service, Model UN, Rocket Team, Robotics, Marching Band, Athletics, and most recently what it means to live the Marianist life.

Thank you for your continued support of STVM. I pray for all of you daily and will continue to do so.

I invite all of you to visit high atop a hill in Akron. I promise you will like what you see.

God Bless!

Thomas M. Carone VM77President

Academics

AcademicsGreetings to our entire STVM community - alumni, family, friends, everyone! I am thrilled to begin my third year as your principal. I love my role here leading our school, and I truly appreciate the support that this entire STVM community has shown me over the past few years. I am so grateful to the students, families, and alumni for all that they do to make our school so strong.

There has never been a better time to be Irish than right now. As the only Catholic High school in Ohio with the prestigious Ohio Department of Education’s STEM designation and a newly Marianist-sponsored high school, we are well-positioned to keep academics and Catholicity as our top priorities. As I like to say, STVM isn’t “a sports school” or just a “STEM school” or an “arts school” – we are an “everything school” because there truly is something here for everyone! I am incredibly proud of how strong our programming is across the board – from academics and fine arts to athletics and co-curricular activities.

A tradition that I have established is the naming of a new “theme” for us to focus on each school year. This year’s theme is “Choose Christ!” This is our Gospel call: to make Christ the center of all our actions, labors, and decisions. This means making Him the priority in our lives, using Him as the motivation for using our gifts and talents to achieve success, emulating Him in how we live our lives, and spreading the good news of the Gospel message to a world that so desperately needs it. I ask you to help our students live out this year’s theme by leading them with your example. We all can Choose Christ each and every day and our world will be better for the positive impact that STVM makes by leading the way.

Thank you for all you do to make our school and community so strong. We can’t do it without you. Many blessings for the 2018-19 school year.

As always: Go, Irish!

Dear St. Vincent-St. Mary Alumni and Friends,This past May, we sent our Irish blessings with the members of our St. Vincent-St. Mary Class of 2018 as they left their alma mater to pursue their dreams. Our 2018 graduates enrolled in outstanding colleges and universities - including, The University of Notre Dame, Brown University, and The University of Pennsylvania. Our students continue to make us Irish proud! We wish our newest graduates the best in all their future endeavors, and we invite them to keep in touch wherever the future leads them!

We are excited to welcome 161 members to the Class of 2022, as well as 11 transfer students. Our freshman class was selected from 49 schools – 20 Catholic and 29 public/private. Among the freshmen, 19 earned a 4-year Irish Academic Scholarship, which is the highest merit scholarship awarded based on 8th grade High School Placement Test scores. Eighteen freshman students received a 4-year Irish Opportunity Scholarship based on test scores, character, and recommendation from their elementary school principal. The Irish legacy lives on, as 74 freshmen have alumni grandparents, parents, and/or siblings! The Class of 2022 has had a strong start, displaying leadership skills, involvement in student life, participation in campus ministry, and high academic achievement. We look forward to a wonderful four years together!

Admissions events for the Class of 2023 are well under way, as we have hosted Open Houses, Scholarship/Placement Tests, Shadow Visit Days, and Parish Gatherings. We thank our Student Ambassadors and Parent Ambassadors for their efforts and presence at these events. Their support assists us in advancing our school’s tradition of excellence, service and innovation by encouraging prospective families to “be their best… be Irish!”

We hope you will visit soon to see all that we accomplish as our administration, faculty, staff, and students work together daily to live our mission statement and to choose Christ.

Wishing you and your family many blessings throughout the holiday season!

Sincerely,Amy (Bisesi) Barcelo VM06Courtney (Kellett) Conley VM03

Local HistorySTVM's Local History class was started in the fall of 2017 by Anthony Boarman as a way for students to learn more about and to appreciate the city's vibrant history in which they live and attend school. In its first semester, a speaker series was hosted every few weeks in the class. Notable names like Luanne Richardson, David Lieberth, David Giffels, and Dan Horrigan shared their passion and knowledge of Akron's history with our students.

This year, Mr. Boarman's Local History students have been hands-on in class through various walking tours and field trips near STVM's campus as well as to the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. They have used these experiences to strengthen their understanding of topics studied in class ranging from Akron's canal history to the history of the Metro and National park systems in the area.

Find out more about STVM's Local History class by visiting Mr. Boarman's class website at https://sites.google.com/stvm.com/localhistory.

The Symphonic Band participated this past year at the District and State level band Adjudicated Events put on by the Ohio Music Education Association. The St. Vincent - St. Mary Symphonic Band received a Superior rating at the District level event, which was held at Cuyahoga Falls High School. The band received a superior rating (1) from each of the four judges.

Receiving the highest rating at District level allowed the band to participate at the State level. The band traveled to North Royalton High School for the state level event. There they received a Superior rating (1) as well.

For each event, the band prepared three pieces, one of which had to be chosen from a specified list. After performing these three pieces for three judges, the band went into a separate area and had to sightread a piece they had never seen with only 8 minutes to prepare without playing. This piece was evaluated by a fourth judge.

Preparing and performing at events such as these, students become better musicians, learn to work together under pressure, and develop skills which will serve them in their chosen professions in the years ahead.

The marching band will be performing at

the City of Chicago's St. Patrick's Day parade on Saturday, March 16, 2019.

The STVM Victory Garden began in 2015 with the award of a GAR Foundation EIG Grant to promote gardening knowledge within the school and support the surrounding community.

A class is associated with the garden called Environmental Studies: Food and Gardening Science. This class is open to all students and runs twice a year (each semester). The class aims to teach students about the whole life cycle of a plant, how to grow it, eat it and grow it again. Students learn basic gardening skills, from how to pull up a weed to seed saving techniques. Students also learn basic kitchen skills that are centered on food we can collect from the garden. We also are joined by Mrs. Brunn and Mr. Lancianese classes on a regular basis.

This year students took several varieties of heirloom tomatoes, cilantro, onions, garlic and lime to make their own salsa. A few brave students added some serrano peppers for some kick.

We have also collected extra food and donated it to local charities such as ACCESS Women’s Shelter. Some of the content in the class focuses on the connections between social justice and agriculture.

The garden has been maintained by a joint collaboration between Shanti Community Farms, ACCESS and UDS of Akron throughout the summer. This allows these programs to teach their participants about gardening and give them an avenue to generate income or just enjoy the bounty of the garden.

“Has a heart as big as his shoes”This prophetic statement from David Brennan’s St. Vincent ‘49 yearbook reflects with simplicity the generous life he lived. David L. Brennan, 87, passed away on Sunday, October 14, 2018, and left behind a legacy much larger than his yearbook ever predicted.

Dave was an influential force in Akron and at St. Vincent-St. Mary. As an alumnus of the St. Vincent Class of 1949 with the drive, determination, entrepreneurship and business acumen that made him a mega industrialist, lawyer, developer and philanthropist; Dave helped transition St. Vincent-St. Mary High School from a diocesan school to an independent Catholic high school. Once established as an independent Catholic high school, Dave served as one of the original members of the Board of Trustees. Many of our innovative programs and partnerships are a direct result of Dave’s interest and love for STVM. The Brennan’s wanted to insure the future of St. Vincent- St. Mary and that they did. In 2003, through a $10 million dollar donation, Dave and his wife, Ann provided endowed scholarships, land acquisitions and building improvements that propelled STVM into an institution of 21st century learning. The amazing gift they provided, the most generous donation St. Vincent-St. Mary has ever received, was instrumental in the construction of the Bishop William Cosgrove Center, the Center for Science and Technology, improvements to Green Street Stadium/John Cistone Field and the acquisition of land surrounding our campus to be used for future expansion.

“We have lost an inspirational member of our community,” President Thomas Carone said, “Dave Brennan will be remembered for generations to come not only for his generosity and commitment to the growth and expansion of STVM, but as a hero at the pivotal moment in our history. His influence and generosity is visible throughout our school and on our campus. He truly lived a generous life.”

1 I joined the STVM family as a shy sophomore, having just transferred from another high school. My dad was teaching science at the time (still is!) and had recently taken leadership over the STVM Rocket Team. In an effort to encourage me to meet new people (and to add another female to the team) he suggested I join the team. It was this team and the unique opportunities it provided that lead me to into engineering. By my senior year, I was the Captain of the team’s first all-girl rocket team and had landed a spot to compete at the national competition in Washington, DC. It was at this competition that I was able to network with companies and industries that hire individuals with STEM backgrounds and determined it was the path I wanted to pursue.

2 I graduated STVM in the summer or 2011 and headed south to Clemson University (Go Tigers!) in the fall. I earned my BS in Industrial Engineering in 2016, graduating with a job and over a year of experience working as an engineer. The STVM Science curriculum laid a solid foundation for my introductory courses to engineering (one of the toughest years as an engineer). My years at STVM also taught me the value of hard work, and the importance of community which helped me get through some late nights and tough professors during my years at Clemson.

3 Upon graduation from Clemson, I accepted a position with United Technologies as one of their Operation Leadership Program (OLP) associates. I spent 2 years (3 eight month rotations) rotating through different businesses with a focus in Supply Chain, Manufacturing, and Quality. My first rotation I was working in San Diego at United Technologies Aerospace Company (UTAS) as a Supplier Quality Engineer, I then moved to Charlotte, NC to work as an Industrial Engineer at Carrier (Air Conditioners). My last rotation was with Pratt & Whitney (Jet Engines) in Hartford, CT working as an account specialist. In July of this year I graduated from the program and took a position working as a Supplier Development Analyst at UTAS in San Diego, CA. I work every day using data to identify risks, drive problem solving, and build strong working relationships within our supply base.

1 How did the STEM program at STVM benefit you? What STEM related activities, clubs, or research did you do while at STVM?

2 How did the STEM program better prepare you for your college studies? What did you study in college/get your degree in? Did you receive any STEM based scholarships?

3 What are you doing now? Work, education, anything STEM related?

1 The STEM program at STVM gave me many opportunities that I wouldn’t have had if I went to a school that did not emphasize science and engineering. I’m certain that if there wasn’t a STEM program, I wouldn’t be where I am today. In high school, I was heavily involved with TARC Rocket Team, SLI Rocket Team and the Robotics Team. Rocketry was definitely the spark that ignited my love for science and engineering. I was on rocket team for three years and became a team captain my senior year. Being a captain taught me how to be creative, think outside the box, responsibility and how to work on a team, which is what engineering is all about.

2 The STEM program at STVM has something for everyone. Whatever you want to pursue, whether it be design based or research based, you can. I know that I was beyond prepared for labs and other reports in undergrad because of Science Inquiry. I knew of certain topics in classes, when most of my peers didn’t. For example, my junior year I did a SIP project on how air flows over propellers at different speeds. Little did I know I was doing a fluid mechanics project! I think it’s so special to be able to pursue different avenues of science and engineering at a young age because a lot of my friends in undergraduate did not get the same opportunities.

3 I am currently in my 5th year of Mechanical Engineering at The University of Akron. I am anticipated to graduate in May 2019 and I have already accepted a full time job offer at Osborn Engineering Company in Downtown Cleveland.

1 In high school, I participated on the Rocket Team and Bridge Building team. I also participated in The University of Akron research project my senior year. The biggest benefit I received from membership of his clubs and research was an understanding of types of jobs STEM majors can have after college. The fast paced nature of my STEM classes at STVM and busy schedule also helped to prepare me for balancing my collegiate course load and extracurricular activities.

2 The STVM Stem program gave me a leg up in my initial classes, making my first semester of college a review of what I learned in high school. At The University of Akron, I studied Mechanical Engineering and received several academic scholarships for the Honors College as well as a Presidential scholarship based on my ACT scores. I was also involved with the Rocket Team at the University of Akron and was one of the founding members of the team.

3 I work at General Motors as a Controls Engineer. I work with embedded controls to address hardware variation in transmission operation. In other words, I am responsible for improving the shift quality in large vehicles, such as trucks and vans with techniques like machine learning and system characterization. I am also pursuing a Master of Mechanical Engineering at The University of Michigan.

The Parent and Student Ambassador Program was the vision of Jim Burdon. He believed that The Ambassador Program would be instrumental in encouraging new parent involvement and promoting alumni involvement to keep the core and spirit of their alma mater strong. It would also provide an avenue for the administration, school boards, families and friends to promote the never ending accomplishments of all St. Vincent - St. Mary students.

AdvancementA Catholic School in the Marianist TraditionMuch will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted withmore.” (Luke 12:48) You have entrusted us to be good ambassadors of the blessings you share with St. Vincent-St. Mary. You have seen the needs of our students and responded in generous abundance.

“Give and gifts will be given to you; a good measure, packed together, shaken down, and overflowing, will be poured into your lap. For the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you.” (Luke 6:38) The beatitudes of giving

remind us to be generous in all areas. We walk this gospel daily at STVM; as we see the success of our students it is clear that the gifts they have received are returned exponentially.

Both gospels remind us to live by giving abundantly of all our blessings. With that in mind, I am humbled and honored to extend a heartfelt thank you to all who continue to give abundantly to St. Vincent-St. Mary with your talent, treasure and time. I am extremely grateful to have the opportunity of serving this family.

Thanks in a large part to the financial commitment of our alumni, friends, corporations and foundations, we can continue our mission to educate students in the spirit of the Gospel and to transform and enrich through Catholic education. As you see reflected in this report, the financial support you provide helps offset the cost of tuition assistance, advancement in technology and general operations. Alumni, friends, current and past parents, we are extremely thankful for your investment in Catholic education and the role you play in the success of St. Vincent-St. Mary High School.

May God continue to bless you abundantly,

Gino D’Andrea VM81 Director of Advancement

A special thanks to Stephen Thompson V65 for his generous donation to renovate our Special Education area over the summer.

The rooms have been transformed and have become useful spaces for all of our students. With the installation of a new kitchen, a cafe has been established and is offering breakfast to students, faculty/staff, alumni and visitors.

Thank you Steve!!
