RECORD FOAL DRAFT FOR MICKLEY STUD

By Emma Berry

From bringing its largest draft of 26 foals to the Tattersalls

December Sale in 2020, Mickley Stud's consignment for this

week has almost doubled in size again to 50 weanlings.

It may be time-consuming for prospective buyers to work their

way through this batch of youngsters down in the Solario Yard

but it could also prove worthwhile. In 2015, Mickley's Richard

Kent and his co-breeder, the late Lady Caroline Lonsdale,

brought a Havana Gold (Ire) foal to sell who went on to become

the Group 1-winning sprinter and young Whitsbury Manor Stud

stallion Havana Grey (GB). Another weanling that was

overlooked two years ago and ended up being sold privately, an

El Kabeir colt named Don Chicco (GB), is now Italy's champion

2-year-old, having won the G2 Gran Criterium at Capannelle in

October as well as the Listed Premio Giuseppe de Montel.

"You dream about breeding a horse like Havana Grey who will

then go on to be a stallion. It's just great," said Richard Kent at

Park Paddocks on Monday as he and son Finn were overseeing

the sale of their final yearlings of 2021. Cont. p2

FRENCH PRIZEMONEY INCREASE FOR 2022 Prizemoney in France is set to rise to i278 million next year,

returning to the equivalent levels of 2017. The proposed

increase means that prizemoney will be up i20 million (7.75%)

from 2019, and i30 million (+12%) from 2021. The increase can

be attributed to a growth in PMU net contribution to i820

million--the first time since 2015 that its contribution has risen

above i800 million, and up i60 million on 2019--thanks to a

growth in betting turnover, sustained international expansion

and a drop in PMU expenditures, as well as France Galop=s

rebounding commercial revenue.

France Galop=s 2022 budget plan was submitted during a

Monday board meeting, and will be formally approved at a

committee meeting on Dec. 13.

It was also revealed during the board meeting that France

Galop expects a positive net result of i6 million for the current

financial year, with connections of horses still affected by

prizemoney deductions amid the pandemic to be paid those

deficits at the beginning of 2022. Cont. p3

Finn & Richard Kent with their Ardad colt ex Dora=s Sister

Emma Berry

Mickley Stud Draft Cont. from p1

"I'm also proud of the fact that the people who have bought

our foals have made a lot of money. Michael Fitzpatrick bought

our Mehmas (Ire) filly out of Country Madam (Ire) for 75,000gns

last year and he got 250,000gns for the yearling to go to Chad

Brown. We also sold a

Showcasing (GB) foal for

110,000gns to Pier House Stud

and they got 200,000gns, and he

is also going to Chad Brown. It's

great that out of two mares who

cost ,13,000 for the two, that

their yearlings make 450,000gns

to go to America. We're going to

have to start following the

American racing results more

closely. It's what keeps us

dreaming."

The half-brother to that

Showcasing foal forms part of the

Mickley Stud draft this year as lot

720. The colt is by Advertise (Ire)

and is out of the dual winner Cherubic (GB), who shares her sire

Dark Angel (Ire) with the dam of Havana Grey.

Also among the largest consignment of the foal sale are three

weanlings by Ardad (Ire), the leading first-season sire in Britain

who counts the G1 Middle Park S. and G1 Prix Morny winner

Perfect Power (Ire) among his offspring.

Ardad has proved immensely popular this year and has

covered 156 mares, largely on the back of his first crop's exploits

on the track, but it had been a different story during the 2020

covering season when mares were in short supply for him.

"We have a lovely colt by Ardad out of Dora's Sister (lot 518)

with a fantastic temperament," Kent said. "We've three Ardad

foals this year and he only has a crop of 19 so hopefully they will

be very popular. He's done everything right for everyone so far

and we are delighted to have a share in the stallion. [Overbury

Stud's] Simon Sweeting has been very good to deal with and we

have ended up with 10 mares in foal to him this year so we're

happy with that. Simon has priced him very sensibly and he has

been very fair to the shareholders who used him from the start

so I hope he goes right to the top for them."

While Kent will doubtless feel

some reflected pride next year

once the Havana Grey

2-year-olds start running, he will

also be closely monitoring the

success of his own stallion, the

2000 Guineas runner-up and G2

Hungerford S winner Massaat

(Ire), who is one of several

Shadwell-owned stallions to have

stood at Mickley Stud. "Massaat

is going great," he reported. "He

has lovely scopey yearlings. Very

sadly Sheikh Hamdan has died

and he owns 51% of him. We are

sad that he won't be racing any

of his stock but they have been

bought by some good trainers such as Mark Johnston, John

Quinn and Tim Easterby. They sold much better than we

thoughtBBwe brought one here and he had a 10,000gns reserve

and he made 42,000gnsBBso that was grand. They seem to have

good minds and to be athletic horses so hopefully next year they

will be good racehorses who can carry on that genuine Teofilo

line. Massaat is out of an Acclamation mare and his stock look

like they will have plenty of speed. Mick Channon and Richard

Hannon also bought his yearlings and they are proper speed

trainers."

No fewer than 11 Massaat foals feature in the draft from the

Shropshire stud, but Kent has also not overlooked his old friends

Havana Gold, the sire of two fillies in the Mickley Consignment,

and Havana Grey.

Cont. p3

Mickley Stud Draft Cont.

"We've used Havana Grey a couple of times," he said. "We

sent down the biggest mares on the farm to him and he has

produced beautiful, tidy horses. We sold a beautiful yearling filly

by him out of Radio Gaga (GB) earlier this year for ,50,000.

Everybody in England seems to have something good to say

about him at the moment. He's been lucky for the breeders so

far so let's hope he goes on to be lucky for the trainers."

Balancing out what is a fairly speed-orientated draft is a filly by

Camelot (GB), who is clearly close to her breeder's heart. Slated

as lot 787, she is out of a half-sister to the G3 Winter Derby

winner Robin Hoods Bay (GB) (Motivator {GB}) and has the

former champion 2-year-old Bianca Nera (GB) as her third dam.

"She's gorgeous and she absolutely loves herself," said Kent.

"When we'd go down to feed her in the summer she used to

smash the mirror off the jeep as she was always trying to look at

herself. She has a lot of presence and character."

Like many breeders and vendors this year, Kent has been

heartened by the demand for bloodstock in all tiers of the

market.

He said, "Tattersalls are going to have to build a bigger car

park because every sale we've gone to this year there's hardly

been a car parking space. Years ago you'd come to the first day

of the December Sales and there might be very few cars parked.

It seems to be high fashion to want to be at sales now and the

trade has been great at every level."

French Prizemoney Cont. from p1

Total French prizemoney in 2021, therefore, is expected to be

i248 million, down 4% from i258 million in 2019. The PMU

will contribute i740 million to prizemoney in 2021, with its

business improving significantly upon the re-opening of betting

shops, and aided by the efforts of both the PMU and France

Galop to reduce costs during the pandemic.

ZARAK SHARE LEADS THE WAY AT ARQANA Charlie Gordon-Watson purchased a 1/50th share in His

Highness The Aga Khan=s Group 1 winner Zarak (Fr) (Dubawi

{Ire}) for i350,000 to top the Arqana Online Sale on Tuesday.

Sold as lot 2, the promising young sire already has the Group 1-

placed horses Times Square (Fr) and Purplepay (Fr). Cont. p4

Fellow first-season sire Zelzal (Fr) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) (lot 3)

also proved popular, with Meridian International=s Ghislain Bozo

extending to i125,000 for a 1/50th share in the G1 Prix Jean

Prat winner. The Haras de Bouquetot stallion has 10 winners

from his first crop including the listed winner Zelda (Fr).

SARL Lemzar bought a 1/50th share in G1 Prix Jacques le

Marois hero Al Wukair (Ire) (Dream Ahead) (lot 4) for i42,000.

The dark bay, who also stands at Haras de Bouquetot, has 13

winners in his first crop.

Breeding rights to Territories (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) (lot 5)

and lot 9, Havana Gold (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), brought i36,000 and

i35,000, respectively from Jonathan Mitchell.

Rounding out the six lots that sold was a 1/50th share in

Masked Marvel (GB) (Montjeu {Ire}) (lot 6) for i45,000. Haras

d=Enki added that share to their portfolio.

The overall aggregate was i633,000. A 1/50th share in French

Champion Sire Siyouni (Fr) (Pivotal {GB}) did not sell at

i620,000; nor did a breeding right to Showcasing (GB) (Oasis

Dream {GB}) at i120,000.

DERBY HERO ERHAAB DIES AT 30 Shadwell=s Erhaab (Chief=s Crown--Histoire {Fr}, by Riverman),

who won the G1 Derby at Epsom in 1994, died peacefully this

week at Batsford Stud. The 30-year-old, the oldest surviving

winner of the Blue Riband, had spent the past decade at the

Gloucestershire stud.

Bred by Sheikh Hamdan=s operation in Kentucky, the half-

brother to Group 2 winner Oumaldaaya (Nureyev) and stakes

winner Hispanolia (Fr) (Kris {GB}) was trained by John Dunlop.

Erhaab and Willie Carson win the Derby | Shadwell/T. Jones

Erhaab Cont.

In five starts as a juvenile, the dark bay won twice and was also

third in the G3 Horris Hill S. at Newbury. He made his

sophomore bow with a second in the Listed Feilden S. in April.

Successful in the G2 Dante S. next out, he ran out a 1 1/4-length

victor in the DerbyBboth of those wins were under Willie

Carson. His final placing was a third in the G1 Eclipse S. at

Sandown

A damaged suspensory ligament brought about his retirement

later that summer with a record of 11-4-2-2 and $905,450 in

prizemoney. He stood in Japan, Kentucky, and Shadwell=s Beech

House Stud, and was later a jumps stallion at Wood Farm Stud

and Batsford Stud. As a stallion, he sired a quartet of listed-

placed progeny in England and Japan, while his daughters have

produced three black-type winners in Japan.

The new system is considered a transitional measure for the

2022 and 2023 seasons, while the jockeys will be consulted

again in the future after the implementation of the date change.

SAUNAS TO BE REMOVED FROM BRITISH

WEIGHING ROOMS Saunas will be removed from all jockeys= quarters in Britain as

part of a long-term programme to modernise weighing rooms

that has been developed by a cross-industry group of jockeys,

racehorses and the British Horseracing Authority. Weighing

room saunas have been closed as part of Covid safety measures

since the onset of the pandemic, and 88% of jockeys polled

support their removal.

Dr. Jerry Hill, BHA chief medical adviser, said, ASaunas have

been out of operation throughout the pandemic, which has

presented the opportunity for a wider discussion about their

long-term future in the context of making weight safely. Acute

dehydration, such as that following sauna use, shortly before

racing has been shown to reduce performance as it has a

negative impact on reaction time and strength. There have been

reports of increased falls and by extension injuries in jockeys

who have suddenly dehydrated to make weight.

AThere are safe and effective methods of maintaining weight

healthily through fitness and nutrition and this bespoke support

is available to jockeys through the PJA Nutrition Team as well as

at the IJF Centres.@

A set of minimum standards drawn up for jockeys= quarters

also includes additional private changing and shower facilities;

shared communal rest, food provision and warm-up areas for

jockeys; communal working space for valets, and flexibility to

adapt changing room sizes for demand. Cont. p7

Saunas Cont.

Racecourse Association Chief Executive David Armstrong said,

"The RCA welcomes the announcement of the long-term plan to

upgrade weighing rooms across Britain's 59 racecourses. This

presents a significant milestone and many months of hard work

by the PJA, RCA, BHA plus jockey and racecourse

representatives.

AThe initial stage of meeting all ongoing safeguarding

requirements is due to be completed by February, which will

include the welcome removal of saunas. The outcome of this

project will be the creation of significantly improved weighing

and changing room facilities that are in keeping with other elite

and professional sports.@

AThe ground has been soft in a couple of his runs this year and

Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum passed away earlier this year

Tattersalls

Angus Gold | Tattersalls

SHADWELL OPPORTUNITIESTO HIGHLIGHT

TATTERSALLS DECEMBER

by Bren O=Brien

Next week's Tattersalls December Mare Sale at Newmarket

will feature 81 fillies and mares offered as part of a major

reduction of Shadwell's European breeding stock. TDN AusNZ's

Bren O'Brien caught up with Shadwell Racing Manager Angus

Gold to talk through the opportunities on offer to buyers, the

strength of the Northern Hemisphere mares' market and to

highlight a handful of lots he believes will attract interest.

The passing of Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum in

March has seen global powerhouse Shadwell reduce its

breeding and racing interests significantly in 2021.

Earlier this year, Shadwell's dispersal of much of its Australian

breeding and racing stock was enthusiastically met by buyers in

the market, highlighted by its 37-lot offering through the Magic

Millions National Broodmare Sale, which saw over $25 million

spent on mares in the space of a spectacular 90 minutes on the

Gold Coast.

While it has wound down its operations in Australia and South

Africa, Shadwell, now led by Sheikh Hamdan=s daughter Sheikha

Hissa, plans to maintain its racing and breeding presence in

Great Britain, Ireland and the United States, but at a lesser scale,

focussed on their stallion operations and high-end breeding and

racing prospects.

That has prompted a broad reduction of the Shadwell

broodmare band with its Derrinstown Stud selling 40 mares in

Ireland last week as part of the Goffs November Breeding Stock

Sale.

The Tattersalls December Mare Sale, which starts on Nov. 29

and will run until Dec. 2, initially catalogued 93 mares and fillies

from Shadwell, although withdrawals have brought that number

back to 81.

Long-time Shadwell Racing Manager Angus Gold, who has

helped oversee the restructure of the global business, told TDN

AusNZ that the reduction was another terrific opportunity for

the global market to access families which Sheikh Hamdan has

been nurturing for generations.

"Obviously, for very sad reasons, this is a real opportunity for

people to get involved in some of these families. Some of them

go back to the early days of Sheikh Hamdan's involvement with

horses like Height Of Fashion and the Mehthaaf, Elnadim and

Elle Seule family. They are some of the families we have had a

lot of luck with over the years," he said.

"We sold quite a lot of mares in Ireland last week and they

sold well on the whole and I'm sure this will be no different. We

would have been retaining these families if it wasn't for Sheikh

Hamdan dying."

Gold said that interest ahead of the Sale in the Shadwell

consignment has been on a global level, and he expects the

array of elite-quality mares to find their way to a host of

different homes.

"I'm sure there will be interest across the world for them. It=s a

small world now and it=s relatively easy for Southern

Hemisphere buyers to foal them down up here, and get them in

foal to Southern Hemisphere time and ship them down in due

course," he said.

"If they have got fillies off the track, they can cover them

Northern Hemisphere time and foal them here and bring them

down. There are a lot of options for them."

The Magics Example The experience of those who invested in the Australian sales

earlier this year was an excellent example of the host of options

on offer with these mares, says Gold.

High-profile mares such as Group 1 winner Qafila (Not A Single

Doubt), who sold for $2 million in May and was booked to

Wootton Bassett (GB) this spring, have continued their breeding

careers, but others, such as the filly Minhaaj (Exceed And Excel),

who cost $1.8 million, have been put back into work.

Now a 4-year-old, she has won two Group 3 races this spring

for her new owners at Rosemont Stud and trainer John O'Shea.

"It was great to see her go on and win a couple of Group races

and hopefully she is not finished yet. It's important for us to see

them go on and do something for their new owners," Gold said.

"Hopefully plenty of these mares will go on and breed some

lovely horses. These are mares we wouldn't be thinking of

dispersing in normal circumstances but we have to get down to

manageable numbers."

The Gold Standard Gold was kind enough to highlight several mares and fillies

which he thought would do well out of the Shadwell

consignment at Tattersalls, as well as a couple which had a

connection to Australia.

Lot 1725 - Hadaatha (Ire), 10-year-old mare (Sea The Stars {Ire}

x Hathrah {Ire} {Linamix {Fr}).

"She's one of the best mares we are offering. She won a Listed

race at Yarmouth and at her last start she was third in a Group 1

at Longchamp. We asked Sheikh Hamdan to keep her in training

at four, but he wouldn't do it and I have no doubt she would

have been Group 1 class. She could have won a proper race.

"Her first two foals had a couple of minor issues but

Moshaawer, the Frankel colt, is quite a nice horse. The Dubawi

filly, the 2-year-old Al Husn, won well at Kempton the other day.

We are keeping her in training next year. The Shamardal

yearling is not a bad sort at all and this is a lovely mare to look

at.

"Hathrah, her dam, was almost the most beautiful filly I have

been involved in buying. She was an absolute queen and was

third in the 1000 Guineas and won a Listed race by 9l. She=ll be

one of our top sellers and rightly so, she is a lovely mare."

Lot 1293 - Tanaaghom (Ire), 3-year-old filly, (Dubawi {Ire} x

Adool {Ire} {Teofilo {Ire})

"She is quite a small filly and was a first foal herself of Adool.

The 2-year-old out of Adool, the Sea The Stars colt Antarah, he

won his only start pretty impressively at Newcastle recently. He

would be, on the face of it, one of our more exciting young

horses, in terms of a potential Classic horse for next year.

"There is another Sea The Stars colt, who is a yearling and

quite a nice Lope De Vega filly to come through. She is back in

foal to Sea The Stars.

"The first three dams are all stakes winners and it's been a

good family to us. You look at horses like Mehthaaf and Elnadim

among others, it=s been very successful. She's a bit neat herself,

but I would think the family will only improve and there is

upside there."

Lot 1615 - Taqleed (GB), 6-year-old mare, (Sea The Stars {Ire} x

Eswarah {GB} {Unfuwain {GB})

"This mare had issues and never went into training, but her

first foal wasn't a bad sort and her second foal, by Tamayuz,

looks a very good sort. She is by Sea The Stars, who I am sure

will be a fantastic broodmare sire.

"She is out of Eswarah, who was an Oaks winner. This mare is

closely related to the filly Raabihah, who is also by Sea The Stars

and has run in the last two Arcs. She was fifth in the Arc last year

and unlucky not be closer. She was second in the Vermeille, the

Group 1 and was a very good filly for us.

"The first few foals out of this mare look pretty nice."

Lot 1378 - Jadeerah (GB), 5-year-old mare, (Frankel {GB} x

Maqaasid {GB} {Green Desert {USA})

"She's a Frankel mare in foal to Blue Point. She is from the

family of Shraaoh as well as Raheen House and both won decent

races in Australia.

"She's out of a fast mare, who won the Queen Mary. She has

been a slightly disappointing producer Maqaasid, but she was

very fast. She carried her speed and was third in the 1000

Guineas.

"It is the sort of family that could see a good mare come out of

it and this Frankel was not a bad sort herself. She is in foal to a

fast and tough horse in Blue Point."

Lot 1613 - Fayafi (GB), 2-year-old filly, (Dark Angel {Ire} x

Fadhayyil {Ire} {Tamayuz {GB})

"She is unraced still, and had a stress fracture of her tibia,

which is nothing too major. She's a half-sister to Turaath, who

won the G2 Let=s Elope recently. She was a beautiful filly we sold

last year. She had a few little hiccups here, and she used to hang

a bit and they could never work out why, but obviously, they

have managed to iron that out in Australia. It=s fantastic to see

her win a Group 2.

"Her first and second dams are both stakes winners and this is

a family that will only improve. We have got a nice Dubawi colt

foal out of the mare and we will be keeping him. The dam is in

foal to Mohaather."

Lot 1961 - Afkaar (Ire), 2-year-old filly, (Dark Angel {Ire} x

Entisaar {More Than Ready {USA})

"She is out of the Australian-bred filly, Entisaar, who we

bought in Sydney and took to South Africa where she was

Champion 2-year-old. Eventually we repatriated her to Europe.

She had the Muhaarar gelding Maraakiz, who won his first start

and then had a few issues.

"Entisaar sold at Magic Millions for $375,000 and the Dubawi

filly we sold as a weanling over there as well for $130,000."

Great Expectations On a more general level, Gold expects the Tattersalls

December Sale to be very strong, off the back of good results

elsewhere through 2021.

"I don=t see why not. It was very strong in Ireland on the

whole. The global market, considering the state the world is in,

has been remarkable this year, both in the Southern and

Northern Hemisphere," he said.

"Even for yearlings up here, it was pretty strong, considering

how much everyone was worrying about prizemoney levels, and

the fact we have lost Sheikh Hamdan. People were saying, 'who

will buy those horses?' but it represented an opportunity for

new people to come in with great effect.

"It was a surprisingly strong yearling market, compared to

what some people thought it might be. There is every reason to

think this will be a strong market too."

TAKING STOCK: NEWKENTUCKY STALLIONS

AT $10,000

by Sid Fernando

Back in March of 2009, in the Werk Thoroughbred Consultants

blog, the late Jack Werk recounted a wager we'd made years

earlier. This is what he wrote:

"The year that Elusive Quality went to stud, pedigree

expert Sid Fernando and I had a small side bet: Who was the

best sleeper or long shot from that crop? Sid picked Distorted

Humor, standing for $12,500, a pretty astute choice at the time.

I, of course, picked Elusive Quality, who also went to stud very

cheap--$10,000.

"As it turns out, we both picked wisely! The top two sires by

progeny earnings through the first two months of 2009 are

Distorted Humor and Elusive Quality, and both have sired a

Kentucky Derby winner. For a while it looked like Sid's pick was

going to blow my choice away--Distorted Humor is one of the

best stallions in the country and stands for $150,000--but

Elusive Quality has made a strong 'stretch run' to narrow the

gap, much like his son Raven's Pass's amazing move in the

Breeders' Cup Classic last fall."

Distorted Humor and Elusive Quality aren't the only stallions to

enter stud for fees of between $10,000 and $15,000 that later

ballooned into six-figures. Cont. p3

CANADIAN STAR PINK LLOYD TO BE RETIRED

AFTER KENNEDY ROAD by Bill Finley

In the all-good-things-must-come-to-an-end department, the

venerable 9-year-old Ontario-bred Pink Lloyd (Old Forester) will

make his final career start in Saturday's GII Kennedy Road S. at

Woodbine, trainer Bob Tiller has announced.

"He's getting old, like me," Tiller said. "What does he have to

prove? I just don't want to put him out there against the very

best anymore. He deserves to be retired. He was never going to

go out there and run in $20,000 claimers. The decision has been

made and we will stick to it. It's been a great run."

Win or lose Saturday, Pink Lloyd has put together one of the

more remarkable careers in the history of Canadian racing. He

goes into the Kennedy Road, a race he won in 2017 and 2019,

with 28 career victories from 37 starts and 25 stakes wins.Cont. p9

Kentucky Stallions cont. from p1 More recent examples include three of the best stallions now

at stud: Into Mischief, who began for $12,500 in 2009 at

Spendthrift; Tapit, who started for $15,000 at Gainesway in

2005; and War Front, whose initial fee at Claiborne was $12,500

in 2007.

It's never easy predicting sire success, but what these

examples illustrate is that some top-tier stallions are not

necessarily the best-raced champions, and it could well pay to

scrutinize those horses that enter stud for between $10,000 and

$15,000.

So far, in 2022 there will be at least eight new stallions in

Kentucky in that price range (they are all entering stud for

$10,000), and perhaps one or two of them will turn into a

top-class stallion like those mentioned above. Below are some

brief notes on each, listed alphabetically.

Code of Honor (Noble Mission {GB}--Reunited, by Dixie Union)

at Lane's End: Bred and raced by Lane's End's W.S. Farish, Code

of Honor was sired by an exported ex-Lane's End son of Galileo

(Ire) who is a full brother to Frankel (GB). Code of Honor is an

anomaly as a Grade l winner on dirt for a sire line known for high performance on turf. The great Galileo, for instance, has yet to sire a top-level winner on dirt. Perhaps Code of Honor will be the conduit for dirt success

for the Galileo branch of Sadler's Wells, just as El Prado (Ire)

was for Sadler's Wells himself? A $70,000 RNA at Keeneland

September, Code of Honor is trained by Shug McGaughey

and has won seven of 19 starts, earning almost $3 million

and he may yet make another start before he starts stud duty.

He won his debut at two and was forward enough to finish second next out to Complexity in the Gl Champagne S. At

three, he was second in the Gl Kentucky Derby and won both

the Gl Travers and Gl Jockey Club Gold Cup at 10 furlongs--his

metier. His dam was a Grade lll winner by the deceased Lane's

End sire Dixie Union, and she produced the Grade ll-placed Big

League (Speightstown) in addition to Code of Honor. The

extended family includes Grade or Group 1 winners Juno,

Fiesta Lady, Thorn Song, and Ali Bey, as well as the current

Grade lll winner Dr. Post (Quality Road).

The skinny: A Grade l winner with lots of classic-distance form for the fee, plus the Galileo-sire line.

Independence Hall (Constitution--Kalahari Cat, by Cape Town) at WinStar: Bred by Woodford Thoroughbreds, Independence Hall was a $100,000 Keeneland September yearling. Racing for a partnership including Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Twin Creeks, and WinStar among others, Independence Hall most recently won the Gll Hagyard Fayette S. at Keeneland Oct. 30 for trainer Michael McCarthy, and altogether he's a winner of five of 13 starts and has earnings of $874,000. He'd won both his starts at two, including the Glll Nashua, and was once considered a highly promising Classics prospect for trainer Michael Trombetta but never lived up to that initial hype, and

after a fifth-place finish in the Gl Florida Derby, the colt was

transferred to McCarthy on the west coast with the year-end Gl

Malibu S. as a target--a race in which he also finished fifth. At

four this year, the colt did run third to Knicks Go in the Gl

Pegasus World Cup Invitational, but he was subsequently

unplaced in both the Gl Santa Anita H. and the Gl TVG Pacific

Classic before his most recent win. He's from a dam who has

two other black-type winners to her credit, including a Grade lll

winner. His extended family has had plenty of top-level success,

including White Moonstone, Desert Stormer, Better Lucky,

Speedy Dollar, Tidal Light, Camp David, Media Sensation,

Dorabella, and Insouciant.

The skinny: A Grade ll winner by a top son of Tapit, which

makes him ideal for American dirt racing. Has plenty of

pedigree, too.

Known Agenda (Curlin--Byrama {GB}, by Byron {GB}) at

Spendthrift: Bred and raced by St. Elias Stable and trained by

Todd Pletcher--who has trained a boatload of successful

stallions--Known Agenda was put through the ring at

Fasig-Tipton Saratoga but was a $135,000 RNA. He won three of

eight starts, earning $640,000, most of that from winning the Gl

Curlin Florida Derby Presented by Hill 'n' Dale Farms at

Xalapa--the farm where Curlin, one of the best stallions in the

country, stands. Known Agenda's dam is a Grade l winner, and

the extended family includes a number of Group 1 or Grade l

winners, including Commander Collins, Lit de Justice, North

America, Gourmet Girl, Trebrook, Paradisus, Soviet Star, The

Very One, Right Con, Fly Till Dawn and Melyno.

The skinny: He's by a top-Classic sire who has already had two

sons sire Grade l winners in their first crops, his dam is a Grade l

winner, his trainer has a knack for making stallions, and he won

the Grade l race that's become the best indicator for future sire

success.

Lexitonian (Speightstown--Riviera Romper, by Tapit) at Lane's

End: Bred and raced by Calumet and trained by Jack Sisterson,

Lexitonian was a late developer like many top-level sons and

daughters of his sire. A winner of five of 21 starts and almost

$720,000, Lexitonian won the Gl Alfred G. Vanderbilt this year at

five, though he gave notice last year that he was a legit

high-level sprinter when he wanted to run, with narrow seconds

in the Gl Bing Crosby (by a nose) and Gl Churchill Downs S. (by a

head). His winning dam was produced from Grade l winner Swap

Fliparoo. The pedigree isn't particularly strong, though fourth

dam Flip's Pleasure was a Grade l winner, and the extended

family also includes top-level winner Big Macher.

The skinny: A Grade l winner by Speightstown, whose son

Munnings, a Grade ll winner of four of 14 starts, began for

$12,500 and will stand for $85,000 in 2022.

Modernist (Uncle Mo--Symbolic Gesture, by Bernardini) at

Darby Dan: Bred and raced by Pam and Marty Wygod and

trained by Bill Mott, Modernist was on the Triple Crown trail

after winning the Gll Risen Star S., but after a third-place finish

in his next start, in the Gll Twinspires.com Louisiana Derby, the

colt was held out of the Kentucky Derby and Gl Preakness for

the Gl Belmont S., a race in which he finished seventh of 10. He

won the Glll Excelsior S. earlier this year at four and enters stud

with a record of three wins from 11 starts and earnings of

almost $600,000. What he lacks in top-class race form, he makes

up in pedigree. His sire is one of the best young stallions in the

country, and his dam is by the best young broodmare sire in N.

America. The immediate family includes Grade l winner and

champion Sweet Catomine as well as Grade l winner Life Is

Sweet--both by Storm Cat--and the extended family includes

such as Grade l winners Pirate's Revenge, Cherokee Run, and

champion Midnight Bisou.

The skinny: A Grade ll winner, he's by a stallion whose first

sons at stud--Nyquist, Laoban, and Outwork--are making an

impact, and he's got a family and broodmare sire that add to his

resume appeal. He will also appeal to Storm Cat-line mares, with

whom both his sire and family have succeeded.

Raging Bull (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}--Rosa Bonheur, by Mr.

Greeley) at Gainesway: Bred by the Wildenstein family's Dayton

Investments and raced by Peter Brant with trainer Chad Brown,

Raging Bull sold for the equivalent of $101,000 as a yearling at

Goffs Orby. He's been part of a trend of European-sourced

yearling purchases to make good for Brown in N. America,

winning Grade l turf races at three, five, and six (this year), and

all told, he has a record of seven wins from 22 starts and

earnings of $1.7 million. Brant is introducing vibrant European

sire lines to N. America with him and Demarchelier (GB) at

Claiborne, but Demarchelier is by Dubawi (Ire), whose Seeking

the Gold sire line is more familiar to American breeders. Raging

Bull is from the European-based Northern Dancer line that's

known for its specialist sprinter attributes through the sequence

could be an important reintroduction of a branch of Northern

Dancer to N. America that's been specific to Europe for decades.

Raging Bull stayed farther here than typical members of this line

do in Europe, but at the end of the day, the line is all about

speed. The immediate pedigree isn't particularly strong, but the

extended family includes such as top-level winners Shahtoush,

Declan's Moon, Montmartre, Kalaglow, Thundering Star, Flying

Duel, Dancing Duel, Ramonti, Zabrasive, and Kings Island.

The skinny: Grade l winner and a member of an excellent sire

line based on a foundation of speed that will introduce some

diversity to the breed.

Rock Your World (Candy Ride {Arg}--Charm the Maker, by

Empire Maker) at Spendthrift: Bred by Ron and Deborah

McAnally and raced by Hronis Racing and Talla Racing with

trainer John Sadler, Rock Your World was by far the most

expensive yearling of this group, selling for $650,000 at

Keeneland September. A winner of three of seven starts and

$600,000, he thrust himself into the Triple Crown picture earlier

this spring with an impressive front-running score in the Gl

Runhappy Santa Anita Derby, defeating eventual Kentucky

Derby winner Medina Spirit by four-plus lengths. I discussed his

pedigree in depth in April in this space, and you can read it here.

The skinny: A spring 3-year-old Grade l winner, he's by Candy

Ride, whose son Gun Runner is carving up all freshman sires this

year. That alone adds heft to his profile, but he's got speed,

racing class, and pedigree, too.

Tacitus (Tapit--Close Hatches, by First Defence) at Taylor

Made: A Juddmonte homebred trained by Bill Mott, Tacitus has

the best pedigree of this group by a mile. His sire is one of the

best in the country and has a top-class son in Constitution, and

his dam is champion and Grade l winner Close Hatches, who

descends from blue hen Best in Show--one of the most

influential mares in the Stud Book and the ancestress of too

many high-class winners to name here. A winner of four of 17

starts and $3.7 million, Tacitus began his career as if he'd

become one of the most expensive young horses to enter stud,

winning three of his first four starts, including the Gll Lambholm

South Tampa Bay Derby and the Gll Wood Memorial S.

Presented by NYRA Bets. In fact, he was the favorite in the 2019

Kentucky Derby, but he ran third, and soon thereafter the

pattern emerged that he was never quite good or lucky enough

to get that Grade l race on his resume, though he tried mightily,

hitting the board in such Grade l races as the Belmont S.,

Travers, Jockey Club Gold Cup (twice), and Woodward.

The skinny: Grade ll winner by the sire of Constitution with so

much family that his good-enough race record takes a back seat.

Sid Fernando is president and CEO of Werk Thoroughbred

Consultants, Inc., originator of the Werk Nick Rating and eNicks.

Pink Lloyd cont. from p1

All of his races have been at Woodbine. When converted to

U.S. dollars, his career earnings stand at $1,786,083.

"He's the angel from heaven," Tiller said. "He's the

Muhammad Ali of all the horses I've trained over the years and

I've been doing this for 48 years here at Woodbine. He's the

man. He's the king. Anytime you find another horse who has

won 25 stakes and 28 times you let me know about it."

Pink Lloyd was purchased for $30,000 at the 2013 Canadian

Thoroughbred Horse Society yearling sale by owner Frank Di

Giulio, Jr. He didn't make his first start until his 4-year-old year.

He went three-for-five that year, but the best was yet to come.

At five, he went eight-for-eight in 2017 and was named

Canadian Horse of the Year.

TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 10 OF 13 • THETDN.COM WEDNESDAY • NOVEMBER 24, 2021

Pink Lloyd | Michael Burns

Tiller campaigned him carefully. He never ran on the turf,

outside of Canada or in any races longer than seven furlongs.

The reward was more than five years of sustained excellence.

He was named the champion male sprinter in Canada every year

from 2017 through 2020. He was also named champion older

horse in 2017 and champion older dirt male in 2019.

"I'll tell you what makes him so great--heart and desire and

liking what he's doing and wanting to win," Tiller said. "He goes

after horses and he did that from day one. On day one, we put a

horse three-four lengths in front of him and he'd blow by them

by the time he hit the turns. He always wanted to do it."

Following his last race, Pink Lloyd will be sent to the LongRun

Thoroughbred Retirement Society in nearby Hillsburgh, Ontario.

"I have so much respect for this animal" Tiller said. "I say that

truthfully. I have tremendous respect and love for this animal

and we don't want to do anything that would make him look

bad."

Pink Lloyd is being retired at a point where he is still competing

at a high level. He's two-for-four on the year and is coming off

back-to-back wins in the GIII Bold Venture S. and the Ontario

Jockey Club S. But he may not have been at his best in the

Ontario Jockey Club, where he had to fight to win by a neck as

the odds-on favorite.

Since the Kennedy Road is for open company, it figures to be a

tough race for the 9-year-old. While Tiller would like to see him

go out with a win, he said there are more important things than

one more victory.

"I'm looking forward to this race, but it's not a matter of life

and death," he said. "He's been beaten before for different

reasons. Every great horse gets beat. At end of the day, it's more

important for him to come back from the race safe and sound."

Japan, finished second in the competition with 40 points, and St.

George Stables finished third with 36 points.

"We congratulate Godolphin on their extraordinary group of

progeny which led them to their fourth consecutive John Deere

Award, and a record three wins by homebreds at the World

Championships," said Dora Delgado, Breeders' Cup Executive

Vice President and Chief Racing Officer. "Godolphin's success is

emblematic of their longtime commitment to international

breeding and racing. We thank them and all participating

breeders for their enormous support, which has been vital to

the sustained growth of the Breeders' Cup program over the

past 38 years."

"Godolphin is delighted to once again be the recipient of the

Breeders' Cup/John Deere breeder award," said Michael

Banahan, Godolphin Director of Farm Operations. "The industry

is indebted to John Deere for the sponsorship of the Breeders'

Cup for many years and so grateful for their continued support.

This award goes to all the Godolphin personnel that work

incredibly hard behind the scenes to achieve the fantastic

results we have had with our homebreds on the track this year."

but when he got on the track, he meant business. If he passes on

his speed and his personality, I think his foals will be pretty

precocious.@

Swifty General Manager Jerri Harmon added, AWe think the

addition of American Pastime to our roster will expand the

offerings Swifty Farms has, as well as bring a new set of

bloodlines to the state. He=s settled in quite well and we=re

looking forward to seeing what his breeding season brings us.@
