OHV STROKER PARTSARC Animal/Intek 206 Stroker PartsEverything you need to add .200" stroke to your Animal or Intek 206 Engine. Choose from either a stock 5 hp flathead crankshaft, or our tougher billet version of that crank. Choose your piston, noting the boring specs asso-ciated with the pistons below. Each of the other items is necessary to complete your stroked Animal. You must cut down the top of the piston as much as .090". The exact amount will vary from block to block, and it will be best to "mock up" the engine and measure piston pop up to calculate just how much you want to remove.

OHV STROKER PARTSARC Intek 305 Stroker PartsEverything you need to add .200" stroke to your Intek 305 Engine. Start by selecting a piston, next, select the rod that goes with that piston, and then select the crankshaft that goes with your rod/piston choice. It is absolutely necessary to have your block alignment bored, and to run a third bearing support with a stroked 305. The engine will produce tremendous horsepower and torque for such a small package. Cranks have a 3/4" PTO shaft for the clutch.

Thor Racing OilTHOR Oil is recommended by ARC in methanol fueled racing engines using ARC's billet con-necting rods because it does exactly what a racer should expect oil to do. ZERO carbon, mini-mal wear, great corrosion protection, proper film strength and the durability to provide those features for the entire race. Track-Tac Tire Treatments Not only do these treatments help you get more bite out of your tires, but when you use them properly, they can help increase the life of your tire. But be careful, they work very well and can "lock you down" if overused.

An "active" tire cleaning solution that does not take the prep out of your tire. No more water bucket! Scrape off excessive dirt, spray the tires with Blue Tire Wash, and after a few min-utes, wipe them clean with a terry cloth towel. Contains Dirt Repelling Technology which helps keep the dirt from the track from getting into the pores of your tires.

A "bite" producing chemical for hot, "dry slick" tracks. When you need something to bite through the dust, that won't overly soften the tire and lock you down.

Do you use "goat p" on your tires? Better Than Goat P Red is a product that is safer to handle, better for your tires, and pro-duces almost identical results as "goat p," WITHOUT that nasty smell! Drops durometer 5-35 pts. depending on the number of coats applied and the tire stays soft. For wet tracks. Not the best Cold weather choice. 45* temps and up only.

An almost odorless tire softener that is less aggressive than BTGP-Red. Allows better control in incrementally stepping down the hardness of a tire so you don't go too far too fast. Drops durometer 5-25 pts. depending on the number of coats applied and the tire stays soft.

Another almost odorless tire softener that works faster than the other softeners during cold conditions. It is less aggressive than either BTGP-Red or GK1-Blue, and when topped with a final coat of diluted SST5, or even mixed with a small amount of SST5 will give you tremendous bite in colder conditions. Drops durometer 5-15 pts. depending on the number of coats applied and the tire stays soft. A good "at the track" wipe.

TIRE TREATMENTS

Adds at-the-track bite when used on top of new tires, or tires treated with any of the other Track Tac Treatments. Contains Dirt Repelling Technology which helps keep the dirt from the track from getting into the pores of your tires. Used as a fi nal pre race wipe (PRW) on dry, clean tires. Not a softener.

A powerful softener with a light grape odor second only in strength to BTGP-Red, but unlike BTGP-Red, it is specifically designed to provide extra sticky tread under cold conditions especially below 45*. To get extra bite when it is cold, use SQS at the track as a top coat.

Soft Quick and Sticky! Designed to be used when the temper-ature falls below 45*. It dries quickly. It will soften some and it makes the tires sticky when cold. Excellent for cold conditions when SAA-Grape is used as a base.

Conditioner that does soften. (As much as 25 pts) Takes a week to work in. Considered by many as a better alternative to HL-2. Great for Drag Racing, and Asphalt, as well as dirt.

BITE!!! Not a softener. You need to be careful with this prod-uct as too much will lock you down. Requires at least 8 days to work into the tire. Dilute with Naptha VM&P (cheap paint thinner found in paint dept at Lowe's or Home Depot, etc) => 3 parts VM&P to one part SST5.

A great base conditioner, it does make the tires more durable while building bite and the most important point is it is a zero VOC product based on EPA guidelines. It is also safe enough to ship overnight by air shipment. It is not detectable by VOC "sniffers."

ARC Machining ServicesYears ago, when we decided to offer a full line of machining services dedicated to the Briggs & Stratton 5 hp. motor, we made an amazing discovery, a complete lack of precision tooling and machinery to accomplish this.Solution - we developed and manufactured our own line of equipment and tooling along with specialized techniques to provide un-equaled precision for sleeving, boring, honing and valve guide & seat work as well as dual plane bal-ancing services. As a result, some of the top engine builders in the country choose ARC for their machining needs. When every second counts - You can count on ARC !

SPECIAL REFERENCE SECTIONARC Machining ServicesWhen ordering machining services, it is important that all the parts that are required to perform the service be sent to us totally disassembled and cleaned. The only bolts we need are the connecting rod bolts. Don’t send any other bolts, nuts or washers. In addition, include a packing list of exactly what you send, what service numbers you want performed and yourname, address and a daytime phone number where you can be reached.

To Start:The base of every block is machined perpendicular and parallel to the crankshaft which is essential for an accurate boring procedure.

ARC Dual Plane Balancing ServicesSingle cylinder engines are inherently unbalanced and require special procedures because of their high operating speeds (rpm). While these engines should be balanced for smoother operation, they will never be as vibration free as 6 or 8 cylinder engines - but - our precision balancing could improve your engines performance considerably depending on your combination of crankshaft, connecting rod, piston & pin, rings (and if desired flywheel).

Here’s our procedure (don’t tell anyone):1) Weigh the piston, wrist pin & locks, rings and pin end of the connecting rod to obtain the reciprocating weight.2) Weigh the crank end of the connecting rod, bearing, bolts & washers to obtain the rotating weight.3) Calculate a percentage of these two weights to determine the bobweight that’s needed.4) Bolt the bobweight to the rod journal of the crankshaft and install the assembly on our Stewart/Warner balancer.5) Spin the crankshaft and balance within tolerance both left & right counter weights and force & couple.6) If desired, bolt on the flywheel and clutch unit and balance again if needed.Note: If you change the connecting rod and/or piston & rings, the crankshaft may need to be rebalanced.

SPECIAL REFERENCE SECTIONBUILDING A MODIFIED BRIGGS MOTOR

The Basics:Block Selection:The late model motor sports, Raptor and Raptor II & III blocks are the better choice because they have a much heavier casting in the cylinder area than the early model blocks which makes them stronger and able to withstand much larger overbores. If you’re not sure what type block you have, a simple way to tell is by looking at the front head bolt hole. If it only goes through 2 fins, it’s an early model block. If it goes through 4 fins, it’s a late model block and will have between .070 and .080” more material around the cylinder bore (making it the better choice). In addition, the Raptor and Raptor II motors have a cast-in strap that ties the intake port to the block just above the breather port. Kool Bore (aluminum) vs. IC (steel sleeve) ??As far as stock motors go, the Kool Bore has a tendency to wear more in the cylinder walls and will probably require “freshening-up” a little more often than the IC motor. On re-bores, you will sometimes run into a hole or flaw in thecasting and then it will have to be sleeved. On the other hand, the IC motor has a cast-in steel sleeve which will have better cylinder life but, they can’t bebored out very large. It’s not uncommon to hit aluminum at .060” overbore because the sleeve was cast-in crooked. When this happens, the old sleeve must be carefully cut out then replaced with a new one.If you just want a big bore motor, start with the Kool Bore block, bore it as far as you can then sleeve it. Dual bearing block vs. Single bearing block with DU bushing ??Unlike the early model dual bearing blocks that had a thin casting at the top end, the newer castings are all thicker so the answer to this question is strictly personal preference.

Crankshafts:Stock crankshafts have been known to run 12,000 rpm without any failure. Hardening these cranks doesn’t add any overall strength but will add longevity to the rod and bushing journals.

Pistons:Stock pistons can be run up to about 7500 rpm. After that, their strength is questionable.Aftermarket pistons can withstand a much higher rpm range.

Connecting Rods:If the engine is going to run above 7200 rpm, install an aftermarket billet rod otherwise the stock Briggs rod with inte-grated dipper works fine but it should be changed after 5 races.

Valve Guides:When a Briggs motor is brand new, the valve guides are sloppy, plus it’s not uncommon to find that they aremisaligned with the lifter bores. Some work is needed here.

Valves:There’s absolutely nothing wrong with stock valves. They’re a little small for all out performance but they are good.

Valve Springs:Generally, stock valve springs work well up to about 6500 rpm. Above that, they tend to fail.

Lifters:The stock lifters are very durable but probably won’t be long enough if you install an aftermarket camshaft.

Camshafts:The stock cam allows the motor to run about 5000 to 6000 rpm and just isn’t a precision cam.

6565

SPECIAL REFERENCE SECTIONBUILDING A MODIFIED BRIGGS MOTOR

The Basics (continued):

Cylinder Head:There’s nothing special here.

Ports:The intake port is a little small and has some rough casting in it.The exhaust port is to big and has some rough casting in it also.

In The Beginning:You can’t compress it if you don’t get it to flow first:There are a thousand different opinions on port design. The following is just a general guideline. The intake port should be relatively smooth but not polished smooth. A super slick finish will flow real well but the airand fuel mixture will not stay atomized. On the other hand, a super slick exhaust port works just fine. The exhaust port is to big and should be reduced (our part # 6130 is designed to do this). The rule here is: an exhaust port should be 15% smaller than the intake port.

Designing the Ports:Use some imagination and think simple.Imagine a straight line from the center of the inlet or outlet of each port to the center of each valve seat. Or betterstill, take a small shanked screwdriver and hold it in that position to see what needs to be done. Remember, sharp corners and angles reduce air flow.Special Note: If you plan on putting larger valves in do it first. Because putting larger valve seats in after the block is bored will distort the top of the cylinder.

Compression Ratios - Don’t worry about it:Food for thought: If you mill a cylinder head to increase compression, you will more than likely reduce air flow. Here is an example using a stock Briggs motor:At cranking speed (using an electric starter and compression gauge) the motor takes in about 2 cups of air & fuel and the compression gauge reads 110 psi.

Now, same motor with the head milled (to increase compression) takes in 1-1/2 cups of air & fuel and the compres-sion gauge reads 130 psi.Yea, you increased compression but you just went backwards in horsepower the motor can produce (why).

Now, same motor without a milled head (but you did a good job of porting & polishing) takes in 3 cups of air & fuel and the compression gauge reads 140 psi.

Now you’re on the right track for producing horsepower.

Note: A compression gauge and electric starter are great tools for testing and checking as long as you always check the same way every time. If the carburetor is on the motor, make sure the throttle is wide open.Document your results each time and for each motor you test and remember:

The 3 Most Important Things for Producing Horsepower are AIR FLOW, AIR FLOW & AIR FLOW

6666

SPECIAL REFERENCE SECTIONBUILDING A MODIFIED BRIGGS MOTORLarger valves improve flow:Stepping up to a 1-1/8” exhaust valve and a 1-1/4” intake valve will help to improve air flow, but you must still dosome porting and polishing. If you do go to larger valves, this would be a good time to fix the valve guides also. For this, use the ARC # 6195full length bronze guides.

Camshaft selection:This is the most important decision you must make (and so many people make the wrong choice). The cam will dictate the rpm range of your motor and generally speaking, many people put to much cam in themotor then wonder why it doesn’t work.More lift in the cam translates to higher motor rpm to produce more horsepower. However, higher rpm sometimes results in motor fatality. If you’re not sure of your selection, be conservative. If you need help - give us a call.

Bore size:You won’t notice any significant horsepower increase from stock to +.030 or +.040 oversize, but you will seea difference from +.100 oversize or more.

Cylinder wall finish:There are many different theories about cylinder finishes but in reality, the cylinder wall and rings must weartogether at run-in to seat properly. To accomplish this, a compatible cross hatch pattern must be in the cylinder wall. After this happens, you can address the friction problem by using a piece of very fine sandpaper wrapped aroundthe cylinder hone. The best way to break-in a new motor is on an electric run-in stand (see page 48).Don’t forget, good cylinder wall & ring seal improves air flow and compression.

Angle boring:Tipping the top of the piston toward the valves improves the flame travel over the top of the piston.

Offset boring:Moving the bore away from the valves improves the geometry between the crank pin and the wrist pin. This helpsfor quicker acceleration and is friendly at high rpm, but increases the distance for flame travel.Moving the bore closer to the valves increases bottom end and midrange torque and shortens the distance forflame travel.

Angle & Offset boring:This is all trick stuff that some people love and some don’t. You be the judge.

Cylinderheads:The line of ARC heads are as good as any and better than most currently on the market. The number after the “S” prefix (eg. S437) indicates the depth of the combustion chamber.

Tips & Tidbits:1 For every .001” wear in the cylinder wall and/or on the diameter of the rings, the ring end gap increases by .003”.2 Scuffing on the wrist pin, sides of the piston or cylinder wall indicates that the align bore of the motor is off or the bores on the connecting rod are not parallel.3 The base of the block should always be machined flat and parallel to the crank before any boring operation.4 A good way to experiment with compression ratios is with different thickness head gaskets.5 Clearances between the piston and head, valves at maximum lift and head should be at least .020”.6 A leak-down tester is a handy tool to have.7 Never use copper or aluminum head gaskets unless the deck of the block and head are super smooth.

SPECIAL REFERENCE SECTIONCalculation FormulasStock Briggs specifications:Deck height: 6.2835Rod length: 3.8750Compression height: 1.1900Rod bore (crank): 1.0010Rod bore (wrist pin): 0.4910Cylinder bore: 2.5620Stroke: 2.4370

To calculate cubic inch displacement (cid):bore x bore x stroke x .7854 = cideg. 2.562 x 2.562 x 2.437 x .7854 = 12.5633

Stroke is measured from the center line of the crank bearing journal to the center line of the rod journal multiplied by 2.Deck height is measured from the center of the crank bore to the deck of the block.Rod length is measured from the center of the crank bore to the center of the wrist pin bore.Compression height of a piston is measured from the center of the wrist pin bore to the top of the piston.

Rod length & compression height - made simple

To calculate rod length:deck height - (stroke / 2) - compression height = rod lengtheg. 6.2835 - (2.437 / 2) - 1.190 = 3.875

To calculate compression height:deck height - (stroke / 2) - rod length = compression heighteg. 6.2835 - (2.437 / 2) - 3.875 = 1.190

What is the proper timing on a Briggs motor ?All flywheel and coil combinations (regardless of brand) will tend to retard over a given rpm range.Knowing how much and when this happens is the key to getting maximum horsepower from your motor.

Example:Static timing is set at 30° BTDC (Before Top Dead Center)

Engine Briggs timing ARC timingRPM retards to retards to3000 20° BTDC 26° BTDC6000 16° BTDC 23° BTDC9000 14° BTDC 22° BTDC

As you can see, there’s a big change in timing as rpm increases.

If you install a Briggs flywheel on a motor using a stock crankshaft key, your static timing will be approximately23° BTDC. This can vary by plus or minus 1° because of mass production tolerances of the Briggs motor and willoccur regardless of who’s flywheel and coil combination you’re using (including ours).

Optimum stock ignition timing should be set according to the cam manufacturer’s specifications.

Engine design such as bore, stroke, cam, piston, compression, carburetion, cylinderhead, and intake and exhaust porting and polishing will also have an effect on what the timing should be.

Once you’ve figured out all that, now you have to factor in weather conditions like temperature, air quality, humidity, altitude and your fuel mixture because these also play a part in what the timing should be.And now, if you’re not totally confused, you can add in the total car and driver weight, gear ratios etc.

If you want to take a simple approach to this complex subject - read the next page.

6868

SPECIAL REFERENCE SECTIONIgnition Timing - The simple approachInstall an ARC billet flywheel (see page 21) using a stock Briggs key. Loosen the 6 bolts and rotate the aluminum body counter clockwise so that all of the degree marks are to the left of the single mark on the steel hub then tightenthe bolts. You now have a static timing of aprox. 23° BTDC and the motor will crank-up and run.Note: Each mark on the flywheel body represents 2°. Half way between marks is aprox. 1°.Make some test runs and document your results. Advance the timing in 2° increments until you reach the besthorsepower then back off in 1° increments until you peak out.Special Note: The Non Adjustable 3 hp Dia. Flywheels have approx. 6° advance built in.

When does the coil fire ?A typical coil will fire when the trailing edge of the pole shoe passes under the trigger button at about its halfwaypoint (see figure 1).The optimum distance between the coil and the flywheel is approximately .012 to .015” (Stock Flywheel) and .040 - .050” (Billet Flywheel) and can easily be set with4 pieces of typing paper placed between the coil legs and the flywheel while tightening the coil mounting screws.

If you’re using a timing light don’t bother shooting the flywheel unless you just want to see exactly where the coilfires at different rpm. The relationship between flywheel and coil remain the same regardless of crankshaft position.

If you’re using the ARC billet side cover (see page 21), the best way to check your timing is to use the timing lighton that side of the motor because we have machined timing marks into it.

Using a degree wheel & pointer mounted on the flywheel side, find Top Dead Center (TDC).Now, with the torque converter (or clutch assembly) installed, mark or file a small groove on it adjacent to the groove on the side cover located just above 9 o’clock making sure the motor is still on TDC (see figure 2).

IMPORTANT: Be sure the motor is on absolute TDC or your timing will not be accurate.

With the motor running and timing light connected, you will see exactly where the timing is set.

ANIMAL CARBURETOR TUNING GUIDEPZ Carburetor Tuning GuideIdle / Low SpeedTurning off the engine at idle & low speeds is accomplished by adjusting the idle mixture screw (555586) or changing the size of the pilot jet (555594) (also called slow jet). The jet size or diameter in millimeters is stamped on the jet (32=32mm orifice). The idle mixture screw is an air bleed adjustment, so closing the screw or turning it clockwise will richen the fuel mixture. To adjust the idle mixture screw, proceed as follows: Turn the idle mixture screw in until it lightly seats or stops. back the screw out the specified number of turns. Warm the engine & set the idle speed screw slightly higher than the desired idle rpm. Turn the idle mixture screw in or out to obtain the highest rpm. Turn the idle speed screw to the desired idle rpm. A slightly rich idle mixture is usually better for accelera-tion. If a smooth idle cannot be obtained with the idle mixture screw between 1/4 - 2 1/4 turns out from closed, a different size pilot jet will allow for smooth acceleration from an idle & steady engine speed up to throttle opening.

Midrange / Part ThrottleThe jet needle (555602) primarily controls fuel flow between 1/4 & 3/4 throttle fuel opening. The jet needle has five notches & a C-clip (555XXX) on the top of it. to richen the part throttle opera-tion, move the clip to teh next lower notch. to lean the part throttle operation, move the clip to the next higher position. The high-est notch (fartherst from the tip) is considered the 1st position. Needle taper reference letters are stamped on the needle foridentification.

High Speed / Full ThrottleThe main jet (555536-gasoline & 55553 -alcohol) controls the fuel flow at throttle positions of 1/2 to full throttle. The jet size ordiameter in millimeters is stamped on the jet. Altitude and weather conditions can affect the engine operation enough to require a smaller main jet. High air temperature, humidity, or altitude could require a smaller main jet. Low temperature, humidity, or altitude would require a larger diameter main jet. Running the engine with an improper main jet size could result in a loss of power or engine damage.
