PREFACE,
Since tho overthrow of tho Peshwas and the establishment of
the British rule In. 1818, the, Political officers in the Diujean and 8. [\L
Country endeavoured, from time, to time, to collect the accounts of the
Families of rJahagirdars, Sirdars and. Inamdars giving their origin,
title, and heritage. Such information as tliey were abh-- to secure is
preserved in the form of Karfiyafe^^ in the
These papers do not, of course, form part of the original records of the
Peshwas' Government, but have been written since the introduction of
the British rule in 1818. They contain interesting and useful infor-
mation regarding the histori^^ in thu l^H^il? all< -l disserve to
he ])uhlished in a separate volumes They are certainly a xisefu I material
for history, as based on the authority of the well-informed old people
of those days, and in some, cases, on authentic documents. It may be
mentioned here that tlio writers of these Kailiyats and Yadis almost
belonged to the class of ordinary clerks which fact alone will speak for
the defects that are found in the text. But, on the whole, the infor-
mation contained in these Kailiyats is very important from various
points of view, as it pertains to the houses of the nobility in the
Deccan. It is, therefore, hoped that its publication will be found useful
to the general public as well as to the student of history,
These Kailiyats are divided into five parts : The first pertains
to the Mahratta Sardars, the second to the Brahmin and other Sardars,
the third to Swamis and other religious personages, the, fourth to the
Mahomedan Sardars, and the fifth to the district hereditary officers,
The original language of the Kaifiyats is retained; only such
alterations as are found grammatically necessary are made,
So far as the Kaifiyats and Yadis published in this book are con-
cerned, summaries of most of them in English, are already available.
As regards other accounts or BaHiars as they are called,, it is not pos-
sible to translate them in extenso;while a summary of them in Eng
lish would be of little practical use to the student of history. Hence
translations or summaries of these accounts are not given,
