HITEC-IMS

Message from the Chairman HITHITEC-IMS was established in November 2016 with a mission

to produce competent physicians, researchers and health-care professionals equipped with medical knowledge and professional values & ethics to address community health needs and concerns.

We are endeavouring to be a leading private medical institute with the objectives and intentions to provide quality medical education through outstanding educational program and evidence-based clinical practices. I am privileged to express my satisfaction over the progress made so far by the HITEC-IMS, though much more is still desired to be done. Nevertheless, I’m very optimistic that through continuous hard work and dedication of faculty members and administration, this institute will earn meaningful repute and a distinguished place among the contemporary institutions of the country in foreseeable future.

The Board of Governors is fully committed to continuously improve the infrastructural requirements of the institute & its learning environment. Our guiding principle is constant change, motivation and up-gradation, creating state-of-the-art knowledge infrastructure for our students. This will create in them the ability to learn so that they can deal with the upcoming challenges in their practical life.

We are yet to travel a long way and I am sure that with Almighty Allah’s continuous blessings, this institute will achieve new professional standards with each passing day, month & year.

First inspection of HITEC-IMS was carried out by PM & DC on 06 Dec 2016. Medical college was recognized for 100 MBBS students in Jan 2017. So far, four batches have been inducted. The original name of Taxila was “Takshashila” meaning ‘City of Cut Stone’. Ancient Taxila is a renowned archeological site with a history dating back to 6th century, BC. Since then, it has been a hub of different cultures including Gandhara, Buddhism, Greek, Mauryan, Kushan, Huns and Islam. Its affluence in antique times resulted from its location at the intersection of the three great trade routes from eastern India, western Asia, Kashmir and Central Asia. When these routes ceased to be important, the city sank into insignificance. It was lost to time for nearly 1000 years and was rediscovered in 1880 by Sir Alexander Cunningham and Sir John Hubert Marshall. The remains of earliest Taxila are marked by the presence of stupas (Place used by monks to meditate) and statues. The five prominent stupas include Dharmarajika, Glen of Giri, Jaulian, Mohra Moradu and Jandial. Statues of the legendary people in history such as Alexander, the Great, and the eminent ruler Asoka were also found in the city of Taxila. It is interesting to note that part of the original Grand trunk (GT) road also passes through ancient Taxila.

Over a period of time, the present day Taxila has emerged as a modern city, with all facilities including the establishment of University of Engineering and technology and the famous Taxila Museum. It is surrounded by Orchids which offers Oranges giving an exclusive culinary experience.

Establishment of Mabali resort at Khanpur dam is also an indicator of modernization. The age-old art of stone cutting is still reflected by beautiful marble work, while it also gave birth to modern day Pottery, the skill which Taxila is famous for.

The prettiest plume in the hat of Taxila was the establishment of a Cantonment and Heavy Industries Taxila (HIT) in 1971 as a part of Pakistan’s Premier Defense industry. Soon this was followed by the development of Heavy Industries Taxila Education City (HITEC) under HIT, to cater for the educational needs of the local population. HITEC started with a junior and a senior school followed by establishment of a college and a university offering masters and PhD programs. Soon an engineering University was also established.

In perusal of excellence in education, Institute of Medical Sciences (HITEC-IMS) was established in 2016.

The institute comprises three different constituent Colleges & Schools:1. Medical College( HITEC-IMS)2. Dental College3. School of Paramedics & Allied Health

ProfessionalsMedical & Dental Colleges offer five &

four years basics and clinical training leading to the degrees of MBBS & BDS respectively. The school of paramedics & allied health professionals offers two years of training for diplomas. Both Medical & Dental colleges

Brief History of Taxila and HITEC-IMSinducted in Mar, 2019. To date, two batches (48 & 50 students) have been enrolled.

The School of Paramedics, affiliated with Punjab Medical Faculty, was started in 2017, which presently offers two years training in:1. Radiology & Imaging technology2. Operation Theater3. Medical Laboratory4. Dental Technology

Till now, two batches have completed their courses successfully.

HITEC-IMS is located in Taxila Cantt, in the premises of HIT Education City (HITEC), off the Taxila- Khanpur road. Taxila is situated about 30 Km west of the Islamabad Capital Territory and Rawalpindi, on the border of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, just off the Grand Trunk (GT) road.

From Islamabad/Rawalpindi proceed on the GT road towards Peshawar. Only 10 Km ahead of Sangjani Toll Plaza, is the Taxila bypass. Those traveling on the motorway may use Tarnol or Jang Bahtar interchange to come on the GT road to reach the Taxila bypass. Turn towards the Taxila museum. At approximately 3 Km, comes the Gate-5 of the Taxila Cantonment. After security check, you will be allowed to enter. About 500 meters straight, HITEC-IMS and HIT hospital will be on your left.

HITEC-IMS

1. University Examinations: The courses offered by HITEC-IMS lead to the degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) by National University of Medical Sciences (NUMS) under an annual system. The courses are spread over a period of five years, assessed by University through five professional examinations. • First professional after first year in

subjects of Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry.

• Second Professional at the end of second year in the subjects of Anatomy, physiology, Biochemistry, Islamiyat and Pakistan studies.

• Third Professional at the end of third year in the subjects of Pharmacology, Forensic Medicine and General Pathology.

• Fourth Professional at the end of fourth year in the subjects of ENT, Eye, Community Medicine and Special Pathology.

• Fifth or final Professional at the end of fifth year in the subjects of Medicine and Allied, Surgery and allied, Gynecology/ Obstetrics and Pediatrics.

2. In-House assessments: All assessments at HITEC-IMS are aligned with the regulations and guidelines laid down by the NUMS. The curriculum is organized and integrated along important vertical and horizontal dimensions across the years of medical education. The course of each year is divided into three blocks wherein the

sequencing of the content is logical and integrated. All blocks have assessment, developed according to the structured program. The assessment is both formative and summative. • Formative Assessment:

The marks of formative assessment do not contribute in university results. The main idea behind the formative assessment is to provide feedback to the students regarding their concepts being built with appropriate and timely rectification. Feedback helps the teachers identify areas where students need further guidance. The tools used for formative assessment include; part of case-based-learning, problem-based-learning, quizzes, assignments, presentations, reflective notes, workplace-based assessments, bedside teaching etc.

• Summative Assessment: This assessment is conducted through scheduled class tests, part of CBLs, ward tests, sub-stages, end-of-block (EOB) exams and pre-annual exams. The marks of summative assessment contribute towards the final grades achieved in University professional examinations through internal assessment (IA). Currently the percentage set by NUMS for internal assessment is 20%, i.e., in each theory or practical professional exam of 100 marks, 20 marks would comprise the internal assessment submitted by the institute, thus reflecting the student’s performance of the year.
