Choose the most logical order of sentences, from among the four given choices, to construct a coherent paragraph.

A. But that was not the case in older forms of the Germanic languages, such as Proto-Germanic, nor later in Frankish, Saxon, Old or

Middle English, Middle High German, or Middle Dutch.

B. Old High German distinguishes swarz (dull black) from blach (‘luminous’ black), and wiz (matte white) from blank (glossy white).

C. Today, German, English, Dutch, and all the languages in the Germanic family, possess only a single base term in everyday use to say

‘black’ and to say ‘white’: schwarz and weiss in German, and black and white in English, to limit ourselves to just these two languages.

D. Likewise, Old and Middle English oppose swart (dull black) to blaek (‘luminous’ black) and wite (matte white) to blank (glossy white).

E. Until the height of the Middle Ages, and sometimes well beyond, the various Germanic languages used two simultaneous terms to

name ‘black’ and ‘white’.

Explanation:

C states what the situation is today in the Germanic languages, while A states what the situation was in the older forms of these

languages. So the CA link makes sense. E expands upon what is stated in A, so it follows after A. The BD link is obvious: B mentions the

distinctions between black and white in Old High German, and D does the same for Old and Middle English, connecting to B with

'likewise'. B and D exemplify the point being made in the rest of the sentences, so they make more sense following after CAE, as in [3],

than before A and E, as in [4]. The sequence CAEBD makes sense as the answer: C introduces the subject of the names for 'black' and

'white' in Germanic languages; A and E point out how things were different in the past; and B and D provide examples of the same.

Hence, [3].

Question: 32

Sentences given in the following question, when properly sequenced, form a coherent paragraph. Each sentence is labelled with a letter.

Choose the most logical order of sentences, from among the four given choices, to construct a coherent paragraph.

A. The newly discovered data painted a much more dramatic picture of climate change: they showed that major changes could overtake

the Earth in a decade or less.

B. It had long been assumed that major changes in the Earth’s climate were drawn-out events spanning great intervals of geologic time.

C. To everyone’s surprise, these long records of global climate revealed intervals of extremely rapid temperature change.

D. And the changes would not be limited to the high north or south – their effects would be global.

E. Evidence to the contrary began to emerge when deep cores of ice drilled from the ancient ice sheets covering parts of Greenland and

Antarctica were analysed for their isotopic content.

Explanation:

B is clearly the opening sentence, as indicated by all the options. E, which is about the discovery of information that contradicts the

assumption in B, fits best after it. C, which states what this information actually is, follows it. A and D, which talk about the implications of

this discovery, end the paragraph. Therefore the correct sequence is BECAD. Hence, [4].

Question: 36

The passage given below is followed by a set of questions. Choose the most appropriate answer to each question.

The popular belief is that texting (SMS messaging) has evolved as a twenty-first-century phenomenon – as a highly distinctive writing style

(textspeak), full of abbreviations and deviant uses of language, used by a young generation that doesn’t care about standards. There is a

widely voiced concern that the practice is fostering a decline in literacy. And some even think it is harming language as a whole. ‘Text

messages destroying our language’, headed a recent report in a Washington paper, and the writer goes on: ‘I knew this was coming. From

the first time one of my friends sent me the message “I’ve got 2 go, talk to U later,” I knew the end was near. The English language as we

once knew it is out the window, and replacing it is this hip and cool slang-induced language, obsessed with taking the vowels out of words

and spelling fonetikally.’

There are dozens of such reports, which cumulatively have generated a sense of ‘moral panic’ in the population. There is now a

widespread folk belief that, whatever texting is, it must be a bad thing.

It isn’t just the USA that is panicking. In the UK, broadcaster John Humphrys exploded in the Daily Mail. In an article headed ‘I h8 txt

msgs: How texting is wrecking our language’, he uses some of the most apocalyptic language I have ever read to condemn it. Texters are:

‘vandals who are doing to our language what Genghis Khan did to his neighbours eight hundred years ago. They are destroying it:

pillaging our punctuation; savaging our sentences; raping our vocabulary. And they must be stopped.’

The end is nigh! If I had a pound for every time I have heard of someone predicting a language disaster because of a new technological

development, I would be a very rich man. My bank balance would have started to grow with the arrival in the Middle Ages of printing,

thought by many to be the invention of the devil because it would put all kinds of false opinions into people’s minds. It would have

increased with the arrival of the telegraph, telephone and broadcasting, each of which generated short-lived fears that the fabric of society

was under threat. And I would have been able to retire on the profits from text messaging, the latest innovation to bring out the prophets of

doom.

All the popular beliefs about texting are wrong, or at least debatable. The graphic distinctiveness of textspeak is not a totally new

phenomenon. Nor is its use restricted to the young generation. There is increasing evidence that it helps rather than hinders literacy. And

only a very tiny part of the language uses its distinctive orthography. A trillion text messages may seem a lot, but when we set these

alongside the multi-trillion instances of standard orthography in everyday life, they appear as no more than a few ripples on the surface of

the sea of language. Texting has added a new dimension to language use, indeed, but its long-term impact on the already existing

varieties of language is likely to be negligible. It is not a bad thing.

Choose a suitable title for this passage.

Explanation:

The author does not talk about the advantages or disadvantages of texting – rather, he argues against its opponents, and says that ‘it is

not a bad thing’. So [1] (‘Texting: positives and negatives’) is not a suitable title, but [3] (‘Texting isn’t your enemy’) is. Though [2] (‘Why we

hate text messages’) is discussed in the passage, it doesn’t reflect the primary purpose of the author: to persuade people that texting is

not likely to have a long-term impact on language. [4] (‘Forgotten art of language’) is unsuitable as the author doesn’t talk about how

language should be. Hence, [3].

Question: 37

The passage given below is followed by a set of questions. Choose the most appropriate answer to each question.

The author's tone in this passage is:

1) Txting: +ves and -ves

2) Why we h8 txt msgs

3) Txting ain't ur nme

4) 4got10 art of language

1) ironic and facetious.

2) scathing and mocking.

3) humorous and light-hearted.

4) disdainful and condescending.

Explanation:

Refer to the first three paragraphs, where the author quotes from an article in a Washington paper and another from the Daily Mail. He

clearly dislikes the ‘moral panic’ that these articles fuel regarding texting. He makes his views on the subject clear in the rest of the

passage: he strongly dislikes such extreme negativity. He expresses his views in mocking gibes such as ‘the end is nigh!’ and references

to ‘apocalyptic language’ and ‘the prophets of doom’. So his tone can best be described as both ‘scathing’ (highly critical) and ‘mocking’.

Both [1] and [3] make the author’s attitude seem more joking than it is. There is no hint of condescension in his tone – the author does not

look down on others’ views, but rather disagrees with them on factual grounds. So [4] is wrong as well. Hence, [2].

Question: 38

The passage given below is followed by a set of questions. Choose the most appropriate answer to each question.

Which of the following, if true, would strengthen the author’s main argument in this passage?

i] Texting is a convenient way to communicate privately and without disturbing other people.

ii] The kind of linguistic wordplay used in textspeak requires a good grounding in grammar and sentence structure.

iii] Studies have shown that texting in languages other than English has no adverse effect on people’s command over those languages.

Explanation:

The author’s main argument is that texting will not foster illiteracy or result in the decline of the English language, as many people claim.

[ii] states that, far from promoting illiteracy, texting is in fact based on a good command over language. So it strengthens the author’s

argument. If [iii] is true, it too strengthens his argument, as the results can be taken as indicative of a similar situation in case of texting in

English as well. However, [i] is irrelevant to the argument – the author is not concerned about the practicality of texting, but rather its effect

on language and language use. Hence, [4].

Question: 39

The following question has a paragraph with one italicized word that does not make sense. Choose the most appropriate replacement for

that word from the options given below the paragraph.

Around 10,000–5000 years ago, while the climate of central Europe began to soften and become more temperate, a large expanse of

northern Africa became hufdoid and the Sahara desert appeared.

Explanation:

'Emaciated', which means 'abnormally thin', can only be applied to people, not places. 'Atrophied', which mean 'degenerated', and

'vitiated', which means 'spoilt' or 'debased', could fit. But 'desiccated', which means 'dried' or 'dehydrated' better fits the context of a place

becoming a desert. Hence, [1].

Question: 40

The following question has a paragraph with one italicized word that does not make sense. Choose the most appropriate replacement for

that word from the options given below the paragraph.

The population of the city of Rome began to lessen agosmoally after the mid-fifth century AD; in the next century it probably dropped more

than 80 per cent.

1) Only [ii]

2) [i] and [ii]

3) [i] and [iii]

4) [ii] and [iii]

1) desiccated

2) emaciated

3) atrophied

4) vitiated

1) arduously

Explanation:

'Arduously', which means 'with great difficulty', cannot be applied to a decrease in population. 'Punctiliously', which means 'with great

attention to detail', is ruled out for the same reason. While 'inexplicably', which means 'without any explanation', could fit, 'precipitously',

which means 'abruptly', makes more sense in this context, based on the statistics given. Hence, [3].

Question: 41

Read the short passage given below and answer the question that follows.

If the people in charge of the old technology had the final say about it, they would effectively kill innovation, although not always out of

self-interest. Someone who works at the post office may genuinely believe that the ways handwritten letters are superior to e-mail matter

more than the ways e-mail is superior to letters. Such a person would, out of a deep and real conviction, want to limit the use of e-mail in

order to preserve the older form of value, just as, a hundred years ago, manufacturers of horse-drawn carriages objected to Henry Ford’s

cars on the (perfectly valid) grounds that automobiles are far more dangerous than horses. Which of the following examples is the most similar to the ones given in this paragraph?

Explanation:

In the examples in the passage, the people in charge of the old technology protest against the new technology that replaces it, though not

necessarily for selfish reasons. In [1] and [4], the people doing the protesting are not the ones in charge of the old technology, but rather

the consumers of the old technology and potential consumers of the new. The educators in [2] are not protesting against the new

technology itself, but rather the over-reliance on it, so [2] is not a precise analogy either. [3] is the most similar example: the people in

charge of the old technology (i.e. book shops) are protesting against the new (online bookstores) for non-selfish reasons (that online

bookstores have a negative effect on literary culture and that book shops are more than just places to buy books). Hence, [3].

Question: 42

Read the short passage given below and answer the question that follows.

Science and practical experience clearly show that we cannot care for every individual wild tiger. Animal lovers and conservationists

should focus on saving the species as a whole, rather than worry about saving every individual. Conservation interventions must therefore

be guided by scientific evidence and social practicality, rather than emotion. Which of the following, if true, weakens the conclusion of the above argument?

Explanation:

3) precipitously

4) punctiliously

1)When mobile phones first started becoming popular, many people were sceptical of them, saying that there was no reason

why anyone needed to carry a phone with them at all times.

2)Educators claim that the over-reliance on computers and the internet is turning out a generation of students who prefer to

look up things online rather than think for themselves.

3)A number of book shop owners have been protesting against the negative effect that online bookstores like Amazon have

on literary culture, claiming that their book shops are more than just places to buy books.

4)When commercial air travel started becoming popular, a number of people refused to travel by air, claiming that planes –

unlike railways or ships – focused unduly on the destination instead of the journey.

1) There are so few wild tigers left that it would not be difficult or impractical to care for every single one of them.

2) When a species is down to just a handful of members, then saving the whole species would entail caring for each

individual as well.

3) It is difficult to get ordinary people interested in conserving endangered species without appealing to their emotions.

4) The reason that animal lovers and conservationists try to help endangered animals is that they feel emotionally attached to

these animals.

The conclusion of the argument is the last sentence. But options [1] and [2] refer to aspects of the premise, i.e. the first sentence. So they

cannot be said to weaken the conclusion. The emotion in question in the conclusion is that of the animal lovers and conservationists

themselves, not other people. So [3] does not affect the conclusion: the animal lovers and conservationists can still help generate

emotions among ordinary people without feeling those emotions themselves. However, if the very reason that the animal lovers and

conservationists try to help endangered animals is that they feel emotionally attached to these animals, then trying to take emotion out of

the equation would backfire. Therefore, [4] weakens the conclusion of the argument.

Hence, [4].

Whatever I see I swallow immediately

Just as it is, unmisted by love or dislike.

I am not cruel, only truthful‚

The eye of a little god, four-cornered.

Most of the time I meditate on the opposite wall.

It is pink, with speckles. I have looked at it so long

I think it is part of my heart. But it flickers.

Faces and darkness separate us over and over.

Now I am a lake. A woman bends over me,

Searching my reaches for what she really is.

Then she turns to those liars, the candles or the moon.

I see her back, and reflect it faithfully.

She rewards me with tears and an agitation of hands.

I am important to her. She comes and goes.

Each morning it is her face that replaces the darkness.

In me she has drowned a young girl, and in me an old woman

Rises toward her day after day, like a terrible fish.

Which of the following best describes this poem?

Explanation:

The narrator of this poem can be inferred to be a mirror, based on its description of itself: 'silver and exact', 'reflect it faithfully', etc. The

mirror talks about its daily experiences, but does not tell the story of its entire life, so [1] is wrong. There is no mention of the hopes and

fears of the mirror itself, so [2] is also incorrect. Only one person is mentioned in the poem (a woman), so [3] inaccurately states that that

mirror reflects multiple people. The best description is [4]: in the first five lines of the poem, the mirror describes its own characteristics,

then talks about its experiences of reflecting the wall opposite it, and a woman who looks at it regularly. Hence, [4].

Question: 47

The poem given below is followed by a set of questions. Choose the most appropriate answer to each question.

'In me she has drowned a young girl'. What does this sentence mean in the context of the poem?

Explanation:

There is no suggestion in the poem whatsoever that the woman that the mirror reflects has or had a daughter, so both [3] and [4] are

wrong. The 'young girl' in the quoted line refers to the woman herself, i.e. when she was young. 'Drowned' in this context suggests that the

woman is no longer young. So [2] is a better answer than [1], which merely states how long the mirror has been reflecting the woman.

Hence, [2].

Question: 48

The poem given below is followed by a set of questions. Choose the most appropriate answer to each question.

What can be inferred about the woman reflected by the mirror?

i] She prefers to see herself in dim light.

1) A mirror narrates its own life story.

2) A mirror talks about its hopes and fears.

3) A mirror describes the people it reflects on a daily basis.

4) A mirror describes its own characteristics and experiences.

1) The mirror has been reflecting the woman ever since she was a young girl.

2) The woman that the mirror reflects is no longer a young girl.

3) The woman that the mirror reflects drowned her young daughter in the lake.

4) The woman that the mirror reflects is lost in the memories of her young daughter.

ii] She is upset at the thought of growing old.

iii] She spends an inordinate amount of time looking at herself in the mirror.

Explanation:

According to the mirror, the woman turns her back on it, and 'then she turns to those liars, the candles or the moon', implying that she

doesn't like what she sees of herself in the mirror, and so she prefers to look at herself in the dim light of the moon or candles, which are

more flattering but less truthful than the mirror. So [i] is correct. Her 'tears and an agitation of hands' suggest that she dislikes what she

sees of herself in the mirror; the last two lines also imply that she does not like seeing herself getting older. So [ii] can also be inferred.

However, while the woman does look at herself in the mirror regularly, there is no suggestion that she spends an inordinate amount of

time doing so. So [iii] cannot be inferred. Hence, [2].

Question: 49

In the following question, a word has been used in sentences in four different ways. Choose the option corresponding to the sentence in

which the usage of the word is incorrect or inappropriate.

STONE

Explanation:

‘A stone’s throw away’ means ‘a short distance away’. To ‘cast the first stone’ means to ‘be the first one to criticize or condemn someone’.

‘Etched in stone’ means ‘definite’ or ‘fixed’. Thus options [1], [3] and [4] use the word ‘stone’ correctly. However, the correct idiom in [2]

should be ‘leave no stone unturned’ – meaning ‘spare no effort’ – not ‘upturned’. Hence, [2].

Question: 50

In the following question, there are sentences that form a paragraph. Identify the sentence(s) or part(s) of sentence(s) that is/are correct

in terms of grammar and usage (including spelling, punctuation and logical consistency). Then, choose the most appropriate option.

A. Approaching this island on the northern or north-western side, a curved chain of bold mountains, surmounted by rugged pinnacles,

B. are seen to rise from a smooth border of cultivated land, which gently slopes down to the coast.

C. At the first glance, one is tempted to believe that the sea lately reached the base of these mountains,

D. and upon examination, this view, at least with respect to the inferior parts of the border, was found to be perfectly correct.

E. As described by several authors, there are masses of upraised coral-rock round the greater part of the circumference of the island.

Explanation:

There is a dangling modifier in A: there is no indication of who is doing the 'approaching'. The whole sentence (including both A and B)

should be reframed as 'Approaching this island on the northern or north-western side, one sees a curved chain of bold mountains,

surmounted by rugged pinnacles, rising from a smooth border of cultivated land, which gently slopes down to the coast.' There is a

subject-verb disagreement in B: the subject of the verb 'are' is 'chain' (in A), so it should be in the singular, i.e. 'is'. There is a tense error in

D: the first half of the sentence (i.e. C) is in the present tense, so D, which describes the findings after it, cannot be in the past. So 'was' in

1) Only [ii]

2) [i] and [ii]

3) [i] and [iii]

4) [i], [ii] and [iii]

3) You should not cast the first stone unless you are certain of your own judgement.

4) The manager does not like changing his mind – once he decides something, it’s etched in stone.

Question: 51

In the following question, there are sentences that form a paragraph. Identify the sentence(s) or part(s) of sentence(s) that is/are correct

in terms of grammar and usage (including spelling, punctuation and logical consistency). Then, choose the most appropriate option.

A. Songs may be nearly endangered as stories, and though people will never cease singing, local musical traditions often struggle to

survive.

B. Global culture cuts two ways: it may stifle local creativity by bringing in hugely admired genres that outpace older ones in popularity,

C. but they may also provide the seed for new creativity and give little-heard singing styles a new, global audience.

D. Ethnomusicologists around the world are racing around the clock, just as linguists are, to record and help revitalize the numerous ways

of singing that may still be found.

E. Sometimes songs can outlast the languages that spawned them; they may be all that remains of an ancient culture.

Explanation:

There is a pronoun error in C: the antecedent of 'they' is 'global culture' (in B), so the correct pronoun should be 'it'. 'Racing around the

clock' in D is an incorrect idiom: it should be either 'racing against the clock', which means 'working under pressure or a deadline', or

'working around the clock', which means 'working all day and night'. The rest of the statements are grammatically correct. Hence, [1].

infinitely small point, while a rival ‘cyclical’ theory argues that it blew up when a previous universe collapsed.

2] Although many scientists now believe that the inflation proposed by the inflationary theory did indeed take place, they still don’t know

how or why it started, or how it stopped.

3] Most experts now think universe came into existence over 13 billion years ago, although they do not agree on just how that happened.

4] Both schools agree that our universe is still expanding, but while inflationists say it will continue to grow, the stars will go out, and

eventually infinite darkness and coldness will descend, cyclists claim it will shrink back on itself, explode again, and start another new

universe.

Explanation:

Statement [3] begins the topic, i.e. the beginning of the universe. Both [1] and [4] mention two rival theories that claim to explain how the

universe came into existence: [1] mentions their key features, and [4] mentions where they differ. So these three sentences form a

sequence, [3]-[1]-[4]. But [2] does not fit into this sequence – it talks only about inflation, not a comparison between it and the cyclical

theory.

Hence, [2].

Question: 53

Three out of four sentences in the options, when correctly sequenced, form a coherent paragraph. Which of the following sentences does

not fit into the context?

1) A, B & E

2) B, C & E

3) A, B & D

4) C, D & E

1) 1

2) 2

3) 3

4) 4

1] Given that in SAARC today, religious majorities and sectarian politics tend to dominate the political power structure, these countries are

likely to look to Modi’s tenure to justify or modify their own actions.

2] After an electoral campaign where Modi had made several disquieting statements about the South Asian region, it would seem as if he

wants to start his tenure as Prime Minister on a fresh page.

3] To give the South Asian neighbourhood such importance right at the start of his term is indeed a significant step.

4] By inviting the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) leaders to his swearing-in ceremony, Prime Minister-

designate Narendra Modi has sent out a powerful message on foreign policy.

Explanation:

Though the topic of all four sentences is similar, the incorrect one can be spotted by noting the point of view from which each of these

statements is made. [2], [3] and [4] are about Narendra Modi's past and present actions concerning the South Asian region. [1], on the

other hand, states how the SAARC countries are likely to view Modi's tenure, so it does not quite fit. Hence, [1].

Question: 57

The passage given below is followed by a set of questions. Choose the most appropriate answer to each question.

As necessities and luxuries get cheaper, do people get happier? A small cottage industry grew up at the turn of the twenty-first century

devoted to the subject of the economics of happiness. It started with the paradox that richer people are not necessarily happier people.

Beyond a certain level of per capita income ($15,000 a year, according to some), money did not seem to buy subjective well-being. As

books and papers on this topic proliferated, schadenfreude set in on a grand scale among commentators happy to see the unhappiness of

the rich confirmed. Politicians latched on, and governments from Thailand to Britain began to think about how to maximize gross national

happiness instead of gross national product. If economic growth does not produce happiness, said the new wisdom, then there was no

point in striving for prosperity and the world economy should be brought to a soft landing at a reasonable level of income. Or, as one

economist put it: ‘The hippies were right all along’.

If this is true, then what is the point of celebrating the continuing defeat of death, dearth, disease and drudgery, if it does not make people

happier? But it is not true. The debate began with a study by Richard Easterlin in 1974, which found that although within a country rich

people were generally happier than poor people, richer countries did not have happier citizens than poor countries. Since then the

‘Easterlin paradox’ has become the central dogma of the debate. Trouble is, it is wrong. Two papers were published in 2008 analysing all

1) Sumit

2) Sanjay

3) Michael

4) Parag

1) Paresh, Ketan, Rajat, Parag, Ajit, Sumit

2) Paresh, Ketan, Ajit, Sanjay, Parag, Rajat

3) Bhawin, Kush, Rajat, Sumit, Sanjay, Ajit

the data, and the unambiguous conclusion of both is that the Easterlin paradox does not exist. Rich people are happier than poor people;

rich countries have happier people than poor countries; and people get happier as they get richer. The earlier study simply had samples

too small to find significant differences. In all three categories of comparison – within countries, between countries and between times –

extra income does indeed buy general well-being. That is to say, on average, across the board, on the whole, other things being equal,

more money does make you happier.

There are some exceptions. Americans currently show no trend towards increasing happiness. Is this because the rich had got richer but

ordinary Americans had not prospered much in recent years? Or because America continually draws in poor (unhappy) immigrants, which

keeps the happiness quotient low? Who knows? It was not because the Americans are too rich to get any happier: Japanese and

Europeans grew steadily happier as they grew richer despite being often just as rich as Americans. Moreover, surprisingly, American

women have become less happy in recent decades despite getting richer.

Of course, it is possible to be rich and unhappy, as many a celebrity gloriously reminds us. Of course, it is possible to get rich and find that

you are unhappy not to be richer still, if only because the neighbour – or the people on television – are richer than you are. Economists

call this the ‘hedonic treadmill’; the rest of us call it ‘keeping up with the Joneses’. And it is probably true that the rich do lots of

unnecessary damage to the planet as they go on striving to get richer long after the point where it is having much effect on their

happiness. However, this does not mean that anybody would be necessarily happier if poorer – to be well off and unhappy is surely better

than to be poor and unhappy.

What does the author want to show through this passage?

Explanation:

The author does state a finding that rich people are happier than poor people (all other things being equal). But what he wants to

essentially show is that studies showing the reverse – i.e. the ‘Easterlin paradox’ – are incorrect. So [1] and [3] are completely wrong,

while [2] is incomplete, as it fails to mention that the passage is primarily a reaction to these false studies. Hence, [4].

Question: 58

The passage given below is followed by a set of questions. Choose the most appropriate answer to each question.

Which of the following cannot be inferred from this passage?

Explanation:

Both options [2] and [3] can be inferred from the last paragraph. Since ‘the rich do lots of unnecessary damage to the planet as they go on

striving to get richer’, it can be inferred that this would have a negative effect on other people’s happiness. The point about ‘keeping up

with the Joneses’ suggests that being richer than certain other people makes some people happy. [4] can be inferred from the first

paragraph: ‘the hippies were right all along’, i.e. the hippies believed that maximizing happiness was more important than maximizing

economic success. Only [1] cannot be inferred: in the example of the Americans in the third paragraph it is stated that ‘it was not because

the Americans are too rich to get any happier’; i.e. the implication is that there is no inherent limit to happiness, no ‘ceiling of maximum

happiness’.

Hence, [1].

Question: 59

The passage given below is followed by a set of questions. Choose the most appropriate answer to each question.

Which of the following, if true, best explains why American women have become less happy in recent decades despite getting richer?

1) In general, poor people are happier than rich people.

2) In general, rich people are happier than poor people.

3) Studies showing that happiness and income are directly correlated are wrong.

4) Studies showing that happiness and income are inversely correlated are wrong.

1) It is possible for a society to reach the ceiling of maximum happiness, and not get any happier despite getting richer.

2) Striving to maximize one’s own wealth – and therefore happiness – can have a negative effect on other people’s happiness.

3) Part of the happiness gained by being rich lies in knowing that you are richer than certain other people.

4) Hippies believe that one should strive to maximize happiness rather than economic success.

dExplanation:

Since the question asks about American women in particular, and not Americans in general, [2] is not relevant. [1] and [4] may prevent

the happiness of American women from increasing, or increasing at the same pace as their male counterparts, but they need not cause it

to decrease. Only [3] explains how the factors making American women rich have also had a negative impact on their family lives, which

would presumably result in making them unhappier. Hence, [3].

Question: 60

The passage given below is followed by a set of questions. Choose the most appropriate answer to each question.

Which of the following is the least likely source of this passage?

Explanation:

The passage is equally likely to be from a book as from an article. All the titles suggested in the options are suitable for it. However, the

passage has to have been written/published in 2008 or after, as it quotes from papers published in 2008 (see paragraph 2). So it cannot

be from a source published in 2005. Hence, [1].

1) Despite achieving near equality with men in almost all aspects of life, American women feel dissatisfied that they have been unable to achieve

complete equality with men.

2) Along with ever-increasing prosperity, America also faces an epidemic of ever-increasing crime and social inequality, leading to a decrease in the

happiness among Americans.

3) American women have become richer in recent decades due to greater career opportunities opening up to them, but this has had a negative effect

on their domestic lives.

4) American women have greater educational and career opportunities than most other women in the world, and they pursue these instead of focusing

on their personal lives.

1) A book called The Economics of Happiness, published in 2005

2) A book called Prosperity and Happiness, written in 2011

3) An article called ‘Global Trends in Happiness’, published in 2009

4) An article called ‘Debunking the Easterlin Paradox’, written in 2014
