Precious Kartell A new shade of Gold

Precious Kartell A new shade of Gold Highly technological, functional and high-performing, and also vibrating with energy, light and twinkle: Kartell plastic is becoming increasingly precious, exclusive and sophisticated, with 30 sensational new products designed by Andrea Berton, Carlo Cracco, Ferruccio Laviani, Eugeni Quitllet, Piero Lissoni, Jean-Marie Massaud, Davide Oldani, Ludovica+Roberto Palomba, Eugeni Quitllet, Philippe Starck, Patricia Urquiola, Tokujin Yoshioka. Unique technological innovation: a never-ending search to reveal all the value and potential (in terms of both function and appearance) of plastic. This is Kartell, the only company worldwide which always goes beyond simple research, with consistency and perseverance, without the fear of imitation and the “trends” which its boundless creativity prompts. An enlightening example: this year marks an important anniversary for Kartell, 15 years of transparency, of research and experimentation in injection-moulding of transparent polycarbonate in a single mould. The prototype was La Marie by Philippe Starck, placed in production in 1999: evanescent and lightweight, but incredibly resistant... weighing just 3.5 kg. Now, in 2014, after 15 years of research - marked by other major best-sellers like Louis Ghost (4.5 kg), Ghost Buster (18kg) and the invisible table designed by Tokujin Yoshioka (21 kg) - the “Uncle Jack” sofa designed by Starck is the world’s most outstanding example of this technology: a 190 cm width and 30 kg of material in just a single piece. Besides Uncle Jack, the range also includes the “Uncle Jimarmchair, with its high back representing a highlight of polycarbonate injection technology, and the “Uncle Jo” small armchair in the same material (a transparent evolution of iconic items like Dr. No and Dr. Yes). Philippe Starck describes his collection thus: “My family of “aunts and uncles” by Kartell is the minimalist and technological version of the armchairs and sofas which my aunts and uncles sat in to smoke a pipe or knit in front of the fire, in total peace and serenity. Times have changed and so has furniture... but our dreams remain the same”. Heaviness and lightness - If the 30kg of transparent polycarbonate in a single mould of the Uncle Jack is already a world exclusive, so is the “Piuma” small armchair by Piero Lissoni, manufactured in an innovative charged polyamide fibre which has allowed the material to be used in a minimum thickness, just a few millimetres, for an ultra lightweight chair weighing just 2 kg, which is also extremely flexible and resistant, suitable for outdoor use and also stackable. “Nomina sunt consequentia rerum: names reveal the essence of things. Even the name alone identifies the quality of the project. Piuma is a moulded seat containing a blend of materials which lead it to weigh around just 2 kilos and with maximum thickness of 2 millimetres, so it is as light as a feather”, says Piero Lissoni. Contract is another key topic for Kartell at this Show, namely the market for supplies for collective or public and private reception areas, where Kartell is already well-established and is focusing heavily on expansion. This year marks the arrival of the definitive version of the “Clap Armchair” by Patricia Urquiola, with its nylon structure in a range of colours offering a comfortable padded seat covered in a melange grey fabric. 2014 also marks the entry of a new padded small armchair designed by Philippe Starck, “Madame”, with a polycarbonate base and padded seat with a soft and rounded design of the back and armrests. Kartell presents Madame - World of Emilio Pucci edition, a chair covered with Emilio Pucci prints. The product follows the company’s Cities of the World project, created to celebrate Emilio Pucci boutiques worldwide, with a limited edition of scarves in the inimitable style of the brand for a virtual journey through colour and design. The prints of Madame - World of Emilio Pucci edition are abstract designs of streets, squares and skylines where an Emilio Pucci flagship store is located. Madame Pucci is available in four different prints depicting Avenue Montaigne in Paris, Piazza di Spagna in Rome, Madison Avenue and Fantasia, both in New York. Light remains a principal focus of the research performed by Kartell, now an established leader in this sector, with over 20 product ranges in its catalogue, covering all functions, but still remaining faithful to a basic idea of decorative and emotional light (rather than technical) light. Ferruccio Laviani has created two new models this year: the “Ona” standing lamp and the innovative and rechargeable bedside lamp called “Battery”. Precious KartellA new shade of Gold

Highly technological, functional and high-performing, and also vibrating with energy, light and twinkle: Kartell plastic is becoming increasingly precious, exclusive and sophisticated, with 30 sensational new products designed by Andrea Berton, Carlo Cracco, Ferruccio Laviani, Eugeni Quitllet, Piero Lissoni, Jean-Marie Massaud, Davide Oldani, Ludovica+Roberto Palomba, Eugeni Quitllet, Philippe Starck, Patricia Urquiola, Tokujin Yoshioka.

Besides Uncle Jack, the range also includes the “Uncle Jim” armchair, with its high back representing a highlight of polycarbonate injection technology, and the “Uncle Jo” small armchair in the same material (a transparent evolution of iconic items like Dr. No and Dr. Yes).Philippe Starck describes his collection thus: “My family of “aunts and uncles” by Kartell is the minimalist and technological version of the armchairs and sofas which my aunts and uncles sat in to smoke a pipe or knit in front of the fire, in total peace and serenity.

“Ona” is an elegant standing lamp with a PMMA stem and screen-printed shade offering a suffused and graded light. “Battery” is the iconic bedside lamp in transparent PMMA, the major innovation of which is the fact that it can be recharged and has an autonomy up to 9 hours. This means it can be moved easily and is therefore ideal for the contract sector and use in outdoor restaurants or cafés. In addition to these new models, an extension of the “Light Air” family of products designed by Eugeni Quitllet is also being presented, with wall-mounted and suspended versions joining the table version. All three models will have both a fabric shade and a beautifully decorated plastic one.

Precious KartellCompany research also encompasses appearance and perception of plastic materials… their “skin”, as it were. Thanks to Kartell, plastic has become precious, noble and sophisticated, even though it remains true to its nature as an industrial material. Several new products, like the “Twinkle” bar table or the “Sparkle” range of stools and tables by Tokujin Yoshioka truly emulate noble materials like crystal. “Twinkle” genuinely resembles a sparkling cascade of crystals and, even though it is made from transparent PMMA, the way the material has been treated and research into light reflections has led to the design of a particularly precious and highly refined product, just as if it really were crystal. The difference lies in its functionality: the table, besides having an industrial price, can also be used outside, as it is weather-resistant. The same applies for the “Sparkle” collection of stools and chairs, now being presented in the definitive version. They are manufactured in PMMA and perfectly combine appearance and function: the tables can be transformed into practical containers due to the possibility of removing the top.

A major theme this year is therefore “Precious Kartell”. The aim is to focus more than ever before on the quality and value, glamour and “luxury” of Kartell plastic, presented with new, exclusive and brilliant metal finishes in colours including gold, bronze, silver, gun-metal grey and copper. The metallization process used by Kartell is a cutting-edge and high-quality process, the result of major research and investments to obtain an impeccable result in terms of appearance, touch, resistance and strength of the varnishes used. Several Kartell best-sellers are therefore now illuminated with this new metal finish, which has given them a new lease of life: Masters, Componibili, Jelly, Matelassé, Shanghai, Dune, Stone, La Bohème, Fl/Y and Bloom suspended products.

A helping hand in understanding this theme, which has also been chosen for the Kartell Stand at the Furniture Show, is provided by the words of its designer Ferruccio Laviani: “Precious, yes: this year, plastic has finally achieved its rightful status as a precious, rare and technological material. New moulding techniques which were unthinkable just a few years ago, sparkling metal finishes for a more contemporary design which reflects today’s tastes, new families of objects which extend its use to a range of products where plastic is a new formal language and which extends the Kartell range beyond the home. These are the features of Kartell Precious and, since it is precious, it could really only be represented with a gold casket: an oneiric interpretation of Kartell where the display stands are jewel-like cases holding a secret and a hidden treasure. In each of them, the product lives in its own world, the star of the show in a metaphysical world of objects. The transparency and colour of the gold surrounds it; the transparency, colour and warmth of the metal is like a necklace of precious stones. A jewel called Kartell”.

Kartell: division of the catalogue into product ranges,multi-channel and global expansion

Unstoppable growth on all fronts, a strategic vision in a series of targeted and consequential steps. That is today’s Kartell, an international brand: with a collection now counting upwards of 150 families of products, created by international designers at the cutting-edge of their craft, Kartell exports 75% of its production and is present in over 130 countries worldwide, with a retail network of 130 Flagship Stores, 250 Shop-in-Shops, 1000 corners and over 2500 multi-brand stores. The transversal nature of the Kartell collection makes it ideal for a wide range of distribution solutions, provided they are quality ones: single-brand stores, shop in shops, luxury department stores, fashion boutiques and on-line sales. Kartell can be distributed in its entirety or by specific product range, with ad hoc presentation as Kartell Lights, Kartell à la Mode, Kartell Gifts, Kartell Soft and now also Kartell by Laufen (bathroom collection) and Kartell at the Table (table accessories collection): each one dedicated to a specific goods category. This differentiation and division of the catalogue into product ranges designed for specific sales channels is a sign of the strength and reputation of this brand.Particularly worth a mention is Contract, the natural development of the company’s product strategy. Kartell products are industrial, transversal and multi-purpose, weather-resistant, fireproof and certified according to reference standards and regulations: all essential features for a successful strategy in the contract sector. Kartell is distinguished primarily by the emotion of its products. The company is therefore focusing heavily on the contract sector, with a dedicated department, obtaining all the certification needed to satisfy increasingly differentiated demand, from micro to macro supplies. In addition to development of the product ranges and division into different sales channels, there is also a drive for further international expansion of the business, focusing on the following main targets:

• MIDDLE EAST - Middle Eastern countries, with particular focus on the Gulf States, are the next and principal targets of expansion. Chaloub, leader in the fashion and luxury sector, represents Kartell on key markets such as the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, Iran. The first openings scheduled by May 2014 are: Dubai/Galleries Lafayette (the second in this city), Doha, Tehran, Jeddah.

• BRAZIL - At the end of November 2013, there was a genuine “Kartell Marathon”, when, in addition to the stores in São Paulo, Rio De Janeiro, Santos and Goiânia and a further 35 retailers present in the country, the company opened 3 new flagship stores in Recife, Santo André and Curitiba in just one week. The program of expansion on this promising market involves reaching at least 50 high-range retailers within the next 5 years and opening a further 3 Flagship stores by the end of 2014.

• CHINA – Following signing of the joint-venture agreement with Gold Bond Enterprises last year, which created the new company GB Kart Ltd, Kartell has already inaugurated Flagship Stores in Beijing Sanlitun Village, Shanghai IAPM and Chengdu.

• RECENT OPENINGS WORLDWIDE - Kartell continues to confirm its consolidated presence throughout Europe, in Russia and Eastern European countries, North-South-Central America and the Far East. Over recent months, Kartell has opened new stores in Stuttgart, Valencia, Barcelona, Johannesburg, Puerto Rico, Monterrey and Istanbul. Flagship Stores are also due to open in Wroclaw/Poland, Deuville/France, Adelaide/Australia, Kiev/Ukraine, Panama City (in addition to those in the Gulf States).

Differentiation in products, distribution and communication.Kartell continues to grow due to a strategic vision and a precise direction followed with consistency.
