PREAPRING STUDENTS FOR DIGITAL LIVING

Abstract In my presentation, “Preparing Students for Digital Living,” I will discuss the benefits and implications of using technology to expand and change the lives of young people. As a media design professor at the American University of Sharjah in the UAE, I work with students who comprise a variety of languages, cultures, and beliefs, but their main connection to each other is often through digital discourse. Therefore, I would like to explore and define the range of technologies available to young people and answer the following questions: First, from a pedagogical standpoint, how can we, as educators, effectively teach technology? And second, how can we make our students more productive and effective users of this technology? Ultimately, I will argue that exposure to “digital living” will enhance the lives of young people and allow them to be more effective and impactful citizens in society.
