Intensive contact among students and between students and teachers, and an international orientation on high-quality education are essential in this context. In addition to substantive academic education, there is focus on the development of such competences as presentation and networking skills. All these ingredients will prove useful to you during these Career Days.

Connecting to society, be it digitally or in a stadium, is essential for science and students. It is our core business. Scientists and students cannot stay in ivory towers any more, the globalized world is facing many wicked problems and demands science to contribute to developing solutions. Understanding society. To connect to (local) governments, social partners, citizens, knowledge institutes, enterprises and companies is therefore necessary more than ever.

We can heartily recommend the Tilburg Career Days to students. These Days offer an inside look into the professional practice and give you an opportunity to present yourself and to connect. Tilburg Career Days: Connecting to Society

The Tilburg Career Days have become quite a renowned event at the Tilburg University campus. It will be held now for the 33rd time and has always been buzzling and well visited. But now in times of corona nothing is like before. Large gatherings are impossible to organize as before. So we consider it a great achievement that the organization has used all creativity and perseverance to make it happen this year as well. In an unexpected setting too: a huge football stadium! Everything for a good cause… Connecting in this special period, under strict regulations, is necessary more than ever.

The organization is expecting to introduce students to representatives of national and international companies and government organizations, like Unilever, Tesla, PWC, Nestle, Ahold Delhaize, Accenture, Philips, and Google and others are waiting impatiently to get acquainted with you.

The university continues its educational program even under the most difficult circumstances, like the organization of the Tilburg Career Days, to whom we are very grateful. This event is in line with the targets of the university to help students acquire 21st century skills, to obtain the necessary competences, knowledge, skills and character to be able to start your career.

Tilburg University wants to educate students as academics who are excellently qualified and equipped to take up responsible positions in our society.

Good preparation is required to make something work. How could you prepare yourself for the Tilburg Career Days? This is probably more than you initially thought. You will have to deal with different questions, like what do I need to wear to give a strong first impression? What do I include in my resume and what do I leave out? What virtual imprint does my social media have on the internet?

During the Tilburg Career Days you will get the opportunity to meet different, well-known, and successfull companies. Your first impression with these companies is therefore very important. We will help you prepare for the Tilburg Career Days during the Preparation Day at the 26th of October. These Preparation Days will consist of four workshops and CV checks. More information about the Preparation Days can be found in this Company Catalogue and on our website.

All the companies that are attending the event can be found in this catalogue. Do not be shy and take this opportunity to talk to companies of your interest.

This year will be the 33rd edition of the Tilburg Career Days. Something to be proud of, even though it was quite a turbulent year for everyone due to the coronavirus. We hope you are all doing well and able to manage your studies. As a result of the circumstances, the Tilburg Career Days will take place at the Willem II stadium this year, where of course all RIVM regulations will be guaranteed. During the career days, there will be the possibility to connect with possible future employees via all kinds of activities: presentations, individual conversations, the job fair, workshops, masterclasses, or even via a company lunch. Additionally, there will be an online company day. During this day we provide you the same opportunities to get to know companies, only this day the activities will take place in an online environment.

How did the Tilburg Career Days help you in your job selection process?The Tilburg Career Days helped me narrow down what type of job would suit me. Especially during my Bachelors, I attended multiple company presentations. These activities can help you to orient in the early stages of your job search.

What is your favorite activity of the TCD?Masterclasses, because during these sessions you learn a lot about yourself and the company. The assignments should test your skills, but are often also based on a real-life business case. Hence, it really shows how it is to work for that company.

What would you advise participants of the Tilburg Career Days this year?Do not be driven by what makes a good career, but try to discover what you really like and what you are good at. Then, the career will follow as you go.

Jasper StiphoutBSc: Business Economics MSc: FinancePlace of residence: Amsterdam

Where are you currently employed?I am currently employed at Unilever. Unilever is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of fast-moving consumer goods, and known for brands such as Magnum, Dove and The Vegetarian Butcher.

What is your function within this company? Finance management trainee. Over the course of the three-year traineeship, I rotate between three different roles within Finance at Unilever. Currently, I am near the end of my first rotation, during which I am working in one of our Finance Excellence teams. In my current role, I am responsible for monitoring the performance of all our newly launched products around the globe. Hence, it is very much related to finance, but also to data science due to the vast amount of data that is involved. At the end of September, I will be moving towards the Benelux office for my new role.

How did you get this job? In 2015, I did an internship at Unilever. During this internship, I have learned what a role in Finance looks like at such an organization and got to know the culture. At the end of my Masters, I decided to apply for the Finance traineeship, and after a couple of rounds, I received an offer.

Unilever has a lot of different roles to offer, and a traineeship is not set in stone. The duration of the traineeship can differ depending on personal needs, and you are able to rotate to different disciplines (e.g. sales rotations). The main reason I choose for Unilever, is because it is an ethical company, operates following the stakeholder model, which I believe is very important nowadays, and the people and culture are very good. In what way did you participate during the TCD?Probably in every way: masterclasses, workshops, company presentations, lunches and individual conversations. I especially enjoyed the workshops and masterclasses as these provide useful insights into the company culture and their daily activities.

Where are you currently employed?I am working at bol.com.

What is your function within this company? After working for 10 months as a data analyst at bol.com, I just started as a pricing manager for the platform area of the store. This job is mainly about the fee commercial parties have to pay for selling their products on bol.com. This fee differs per product category and is subject to changes, so the function still contains a big aspect of data analytics regarding the financial and commercial impact of these changes, but also thinking about the long-term strategy and project management regarding i.e. external communication.

How did you get this job? After graduating I started working as a consultant. One of my assignments was at bol.com. I really liked it here and didn’t want to leave the company, so decided to apply for a job.

In what way did you participate during the TCD?I attended some company presentations, but also had a few master classes.

How did the Tilburg Career Days help you in your job selection process?Before applying to the activities you often already have an impression of a company, based on stories of others, what you see on LinkedIn or maybe commercials on tv or social media. Because of attending these activities on the TCD, I realized not all the impressions I had were correct. Which for some companies was a good thing and for others it wasn’t. However, it helped me feeling confident about where I wanted to apply for an internship, job or which options I wanted to explore a bit further (for example by visiting orientation days, which are often organized by the company itself at their office).

What is your favorite activity of the TCD?The masterclasses of the companies.

What would you advise participants of the Tilburg Career Days this year?It depends on which study phase you’re in. If you are planning to apply for an internship or job soon, I would register for activities where you can speak to recruiters/employees of the company directly (like master classes or lunches/drinks). They often give you a good impression and can help you if you are interested in, for example, visiting the office or want to speak to other employees. If you are not in that phase yet, I would visit the company presentations, since this probably will be a better use of your time and is a good start of your orientation as well. Also, companies often invite people for the masterclasses and lunches who are entering the job market soon, since it is a recruitment event for them as well.

JOB FAIRThe job fair is a central activity during the Tilburg Career Days. During the job fair the participating companies will be recognizable by their stands. All participants of the TCD are welcome. A job fair is a geat way to meet recruiters in an informal way and allows you to give a great first impression.

COMPANY PRESENTATIONS

WORKSHOPS

What does a company really have to offer you? During a 45 minute presentation the organization will give you more insight about the company. Topics like internal and external culture, opportunities within the company and expectations the company has of its employees are areas that are touched during a company presentation. All students are welcome to join a company presentation; there will not be a selection procedure based on resumes.

Based on your resume, you can be selected to participate in a workshop of the company of your preference. With a small group you will get the opportunity to work on a case selected by the company and you will have the opportunity to ask your questions. During these 90 minutes you will be taught by professionals. Several workshops will be held during the TCD.

INDIVIDUAL CONVERSATIONSA way to set yourself apart from the other students is by having personal meetings of 20, 30 or 45 minutes with a recruiter. Based on your resume you can be invited by the company of your preference for an individual meeting. When you are invited for an individual meeting you can assume that your qualities and experiences overlap the qualities a company is looking for. The individual meeting gives you the opportunity to personally present yourself and to convince the recruiter that you are the person they are looking for. By preparing yourself for the individual meeting you will enlarte your way to succes. When the meeting was psotivie for both parties, it can be the start of your career!

MASTERCLASS

DINER/LUNCH

Based on your resume, you can be the lucky one who gets selected to join a company’s masterclass. During these 180 minutes-taking masterclass, you will be working together with different students. The goal is to solve the case as sucessfully as possible! Bring out the best in yourself: this masterclass is an ideal opportunity to show the company of your preference what your talent is.

If you want to meet a company in a more informal way, and of course enjoy a nice dinner, you can apply for a company dinner or lunch. You will sit aside recruiters and employees of the participating company and will have the entire afternoon/evening to ask all the questions that you want.
