The following photo was submitted to our annual catalog photo contest by Noel Allard from Minnesota. He writes, “My recently restored 1952 WD Allis. I won the tractor at auction at the LeSeur Minnesota Pioneer Show flea market as a barely running, well-used machine right out of the field. The first year I spent just scrap-ing congealed grease from the frame. The next three years were spent tearing it down into its various com-ponents, babying each one. Thanks for the encouragement, tech-nical help, and some physical effort from my friends of the Park Rapids, MN Antique Tractor Club, I got “Al-ice” running a year ago. It’s my parade tractor and my pride and joy!” Our complete album can be viewed at www.SteinerTractor.com/tractor-photo-winners

My wife received a call from one of our friends and wanted to know if we knew anyone interested in buying an old tractor. They did not know if it ran because it had been sitting for about eight years. I decided to go look at the tractor because I thought it would be a fun project for me with the help of my two sons. We fell in love with it even with the flat tires, the fact that it was not running, and rust everywhere. I told my wife I was bringing it home and her first question was “Does it run?” I said “no” and she responed,

“Well why are you bringing it home?” I was able to get the tractor on the

trailer by putting it in gear and using the hand crank to back it up a few inches at a time. The rest is history.

My sons and I had a wonderful time learning about the tractor as we went. We watched Steiner repair videos on how to fix it up. I bought it in October and pulled it out of the garage on Christmas night when my oldest son was home from college. I waited so he could help me put the wheels back on. From that time on there were a whole lot of late nights and a whole lot of head scratching. Our tractor is a 1956 Farmall Cub and I am only the third owner.

A family restoration

I bought it from an elderly man’s family, his father bought it new. The best thing about the tractor is the family time we had restoring it. My wife even gave up her car’s spot in the garage because she does not want it in the rain!

Hush little tractorPractice these 15 tips to get your tractor stored for the winter season.

9

1. Wash and dry the tractor.

2. Fix any mechanical problems or note them so they can be addressed in the spring. If you do not have a shop or operator’s manual now is the time to order them so you have the informa-tion ready when needed.

3. Check the antifreeze with a coolant tester to verify the coolant gravity. Make sure that it has not been diluted and that it keeps the engine from freezing. Depending on the area you live in you need to decide what antifreeze mixture is safe for your engine. In Michigan we mix the antifreeze to test to a minus 20 degrees Fahrenheit. If your state gets colder you need to run a stronger mix.

4. Changing the oil and filter before storage is a good idea, as the oil can break down and the acids from combustion can leave harmful deposits in the engine and etch the bearing surfaces over the winter. Run the engine for about 5 minutes to help circulate the oil through the engine. You can wait on the air filter system until spring, that way if a rodent decides to make a home in it you will see it when servicing the filter before starting the engine.

5. If the tractor is equipped with hydraulics, lower the lift to

help prevent corrosion to the cylinder(s).

6. Top off the fuel tank and add a fuel stabilizer or drain the fuel out of the tank & carburetor and spray a mist of Sea Foam or similar product in the tank and carburetor to prevent corrosion. Now is also the time to clean the sediment bowl and add a new bowl gasket.

7. To help prevent weather check-ing and tire damage, verify that the tire pressure is at the recommended pressures, usually 10-12 lbs. for the rear tires and 30 lbs. for the fronts.

8. If you will not be moving the tractor through the winter, consider jacking the tractor up. Support the front and rear axles so the tires do not touch the ground. Do not set the brakes as this could cause the brakes to stick.

9. Charge the battery and if possible store in a climate controlled area to keep it from getting damaged. Clean the battery box / tray and retainer to prevent corrosion. If the battery must stay in the tractor unhook the ground cable.

10. To help prevent unwanted guests nesting in the tractor use a recommended mouse / bird deterrent. You can also use Irish

As fall plowing ends the thoughts of winter begin. If you are not using your tractor for plowing or other snowy tasks consider putting your tractor to bed. Here are our helpful tips to get your tractor into storage:

Spring® bar soap or moth balls as this helps to keep them from that area. Cut the bar soap into quarters and place on or around the tractor in different areas.

11. Cover the tractor even when storing inside, the finish can be damaged from bird droppings. Cover the intake and exhaust pipes / caps to prevent debris from getting inside.

12. After the tractor sits for a few days carefully loosen the transmission and rear end drain plugs a few threads. Once you see fluid around the threads, place a container under them to drain off any condensation that settled in the transmission and differential housings. When the fluid looks like oil tighten the plugs.

13. Take the spark plugs out and spray a mist of oil into the cylinders to help prevent corrosion. Retighten the spark plugs.

14. Lubricate all linkages and exposed bare metal to keep them from corroding.

15. If possible turn the engine by hand periodically to keep the valve train and other main components from sticking.

Products spotlightA diamond in the rough! The following photo was submitted to our annual catalog photo contest by Lawrence Hodson from California. He writes, “I recently moved to a location with 20 acres. I was in need of a tractor. After meet-ing new neighbors and friends, I mentioned that I needed a tractor. One of my new friends said he would sell me his tractor and gave me his address where I went to see it. This picture says it all. The shed / barn was probably being held up by the wisteria growing through every window, wall, and door. Peeking out the front was this amazing find. A 1959 Case model 210B. The owner drove it for 6 years prior and had not touched it since. I put it on a trailer and took it home. I put a carburetor kit in it, the 6-volt (positive ground) generator was rebuilt and a new battery was installed. It started up and continues to run better each day. It is a wonderful tractor and a rare model. It has power steering, low and high range, and is easy to drive.” Our complete album can be viewed at www.SteinerTractor.com/tractor-photo-winners

My name is Dave and the tractor story I have is about a 1944 Case model DO. Our search started when my father and I were sitting down at my parent’s home in Florida. They bought a house there over seven years ago and moved there full time.

Back at our old family household we would pick a piece of equipment or a machine and decorate it with lights for the holidays. The last time we did this as a family was in 2007. So two years ago in late November, early December my father and I were talking about how fun it was putting the lights up and how we both enjoy our tractors and machines. The last tractor we decorated was our 1941 Farmall

H and it looked great so we asked ourselves, “How can we do this in a subdivision in Florida?” After some time trying to figure out how to get a tractor home, we found one that worked perfectly!

Here is the Paul Harvey story - lol. I was on the internet and found an ad for a Case tractor. The man we bought it from could not keep anymore. So naturally we inquired about it and found it in Tampa, Florida - only a 30 minute drive from the house. We received the direc-tions to our meeting place and we were surprised to find out it was a bird sanctuary. Mr. Zaksee was his name and birds were his game! This place was just amazing for what it was and sure enough there

was the little Case sitting by a tree. After awhile of chatting and some laughs we made a deal and the very next day we picked her up and brought her home. What a feeling it was, bringing a new toy home even though the main reason we pur-chased the Case was for a Christmas ornament for our home. To find a vintage tractor in a bird sanctuary was neato!

We fell in love with the tractor because it needed to be saved from where it was. We brought it home and cleaned her up, even put a quick coat of Case orange to protect it a little. When Christmas came the Case looked great in the subdivision!

“My Dad purchased this 1955 Ford 860 tractor with a 2 bottom 16 inch Economy plow in the Spring of 1955. When the tractor was delivered to the farm, I was the first to drive it in the field pulling a disk over plowed ground. The sales agent rode along telling me the tractor was much more powerful than the Ferguson Dad traded in and to be careful. I was thirteen at the time.

I spent many hours in the seat of this tractor plowing and discing. Dad used the tractor to pull an International Harvester bailer, Minneapolis Moline combine, New Idea corn picker, bush hog, and other implements. We raised chickens in two buildings and Dad used the tractor with a front loader to clean out the buildings.

After 27 years of use, I purchased the tractor at my parent’s farm sale thinking I would need the tractor to manage small acreage my wife and I thought we might purchase for our next home. The property purchase never happened and I used the tractor around the area mowing, grading, and hauling wood.

In 1994 immediately after I retired from teaching, I took the hood and fenders off the tractor to begin a restoration. I drained the radiator and gasoline tank, but soon I was re-employed in a second career and stopped working on the tractor until the spring of 2014. I arranged for a body shop to paint the hood, new fenders, new front wheels, and rear wheels. I purchased new rear rims and had new tires mounted to the rims

and newly painted front wheels. With the tractor mobile, I pulled it up onto a trailer and hauled it to a body shop to have the chassis painted. I then spent the summer of 2016 reassem-bling the tractor using new parts to replace worn out parts. Finally on July 28, 2016, I started the tractor engine for the first time in 22 years. I had a neighbor grind the valves as the only change to the engine. Dad had the engine overhauled in the late 70s or early 80s and used the tractor as a utility tractor only since he had larger tractors for field work. The engine runs and sounds as good as new. Recently I took the tractor on a cruise to a neigh-bor’s farm to borrow an implement to use on my garden. After driving to and from this farm and working the garden area, a small leak started in the front of the gasoline tank where a bracket is welded. Knowing I could have the tank repaired, but finding a new tank online, I chose to purchase a new tank. After the new tank is installed, I will clean and wax the gray parts and clean the chassis to get the tractor ready for shows in our area.”

Poinsettias are named for Joel Robert Poinsett (1779-1851), a noted statesman and dedi-cated amateur botanist who first brought

No two snowflakes are alike

Snowflakes are really ice crystals that are formed in the clouds by water vapor. Snowflake formation is affected by a variety of factors including air currents,

humidity, and temperature. Particles of dirt that are trapped in the water vapor affects the weight and durability of the ice crystals. Because of these extenuating factors, no two snowflakes are exactly alike - though there is no scientific reason that prevents it. Snowflakes may look the same but will not have the same number of water molecules or the exact amount of oxygen and hydrogen. https://weather.thefuntimesguide.com/the_snowflake/

Antique tractors of many colors

We would like to thank everyone at Steiner Tractor Parts for being

a partner in our show. We had our most successful show ever this year. And again this year our pullers and tractor displayers were excited to see the 2017 Steiner catalog.

I have enclosed a few pictures from our show. We displayed our Steiner banner at our antique tractor pull arena. We had a lot of comments from the pullers about how they loved your service and shipping. Personally I know that my husband loves to order enough to get the free hat when they are being offered.

Thank you again for your support of our show. The hats, t-shirts, fun-nels, little bottle opener guys, and the candy were as always a big hit!

Sincerely,Charly Baron, Secretary Northern Nevada Antique Power Club

“My Grandpa bought this 1950 Ferguson TO-20 brand new. He used it many years on his fruit and stock farm until his death in the early 70s. My father inherited it and used it for various chores such as hauling firewood, plowing the driveway in winter and fitting our rather large garden.

The tractor eventually fell into disar-ray and was parked in the weeds for the last twenty years. In early 2015, I was diagnosed with Leukemia and needed a project to keep my mind occupied, so I dragged it home and rebuilt it. It runs great and I use it for just about anything on the farm.”
