ABriefHistoryofPetFood

In1860,JamesSpratt,anelectricianfromCincinnati,OhiowassellinglightningrodsonLondon’sdocks.Hewatchedassailorsandmerchants,leavingtheships,wouldtosstheirleftoversearations(knownas‘hardtack’)tothedogs.Sprattsurmisedthat,ifthedogsareeatingthehardtack,thismustbewhatdogsneedintheirdiet(nevermindthatdogswilleatalmostanythinghumanseat–goodforthemornot!)Sotheentrepreneurtookthehardtackingredients(wheat,vegetableproteinandbeetrootsugar),addedbeefbloodtotheingredientsandcalledit“Spratt’sPatentMeatFibrineVegetableDogCakes.”Beforelong,hisdogbiscuitshadbecomethestapledogfoodforshowdogsand,then,mostdogs,fromLondontoNewYorkandbeyond.Theproblemwiththisisthatin1860noonequestionedwhetherSpratt’sformulaforpetfoodwasgoodfordogsorcats.Yet,fromtheinceptionofSpratt’sbiscuitsuntilthepresentday,almosteverydryandwetpetfoodcompanyhaspatternedtheirrecipesafterSpratt’soriginalpetfoodformula.Manypetfoodcompaniesinbusinesstodayusedifferentvariationsofthisformulabuttheendresultsareallthesame.Theyallendupwithalittlebiscuit-type,dry(kibble)andwetpetfood.Theseingredientsareextremelydifficultfortheirdigestivesystemstoprocessandareharmfulandtoxictodogsandcatsbodies.

Wolf,whereasthecoyotehasa6%difference.Theonepercentdifferenceonlydefinessize,shape,coattypeandbreed.Domesticationhasnotchangedthegeneticmakeup,thenutritionalrequirementsorthedigestivesystemofthedog.Ithasmerelyalteredtemperamentandbehavior.Afewdefiningcharacteristicsofcarnivorestonote:

Unlikeherbivoresandomnivores,carnivores(dogsandcats)cannot“chew”theirfood.Theyareabletomovetheirjawsupanddown(acrushingmotion)butcannotmovetheirlowerjawfromsidetoside(achewingmotion)asherbivoresandomnivorescan.Theyalsolacktheenzymesintheirsalivathatbreaksdownfood.Instead,theseenzymesarelocatedinthestomachwherethefoodiscompletelybrokendown,thisiswhytheygulptheirfood.

Dogandcatdigestivesystemsaredesignedtobreakdownmeatandbonewhenthemeatandboneisinitsrawform.Theentireprocesstakes10-12hours.Therawmeatshouldbecompletelyabsorbedintothebodyduringthattime,leavingabout5%to7%waste.Afterconsumingdrycommercialpetfooditneedstosoften,whilesittinginyourpetsstomach,beforeyourpet’sdigestivesystemcanbegintoprocessit.Thisprocessalonetakesabout25hours.Thatisatleasttwicethetimethattheirbodieswouldnormallyspenddigesting,metabolizingandexpellingrawmeatandrawbone.Drypetfoodspendsthistimesittingintheirstomachs,soakingupthewatertheydrinkanddrawingawaythemuch-neededbodyfluidsfromtheirstomach.Duringthistimeofsoakingupwaterandbodyfluids,

Whyiscommercialpetfoodbadforyourpet?

$70billiondollars.That’showmuchmoneypetownersspendoncommercialpetfoodandproductseveryyearintheU.S.A.,thatisnotincludingtheother194countriesontheplanet.Themajorproducersofpetfoodmakealotofmoneyandagooddealofthatmoneyisspentonmarketingtoconsumers.Whyspendsomuchmoneyonmarketingifthequalityofthefoodspeaksforitself?TheMeatSourceConsidertheactualmeatsourceincorporatedintocommercialpetfood.ThemeatfoundinmostcommercialpetfoodisUSDAFeedGrade(animalgrade)meatandisnotclassifiedasgenerallyrecognizedassafe(GRAS).The

commercialpetfoodmeatsourceusuallyconsistsoftheleftoverscrapscollectedofftheflooroftheslaughterhouseormeatprocessingplant.Proteinamountsonpetfoodlabels’“GuaranteedAnalysis”canclaimanywherebetween20–40%protein.However:Ontheaverage,lessthan1%ofthatproteincomesfromtheanimalpartsandpiecesthatwerescrapedofftheslaughterhousefloor.Morethan95%ofthatproteinisderivedfromalltheothertoxicandharmfulingredientsusedtomakethecommercialpetfood.CalciumIsNotCalciumDogandcatmuscleandbonestructuresgrowinproportiontotheirbodies.Withoutnaturalcalcium,vitamins,proteinsandmineralsderivedfromrawboneandbonemarrowintheirdiettheydevelopRickets.Ricketsiswhentheirbonesdonotgrowstrongenoughtoproperlysupporttheweightoftheirbodies.VeterinarianshaveseenanepidemicnumberofsideeffectsfromRicketsinpets,suchashipdysphasia,jointandmuscleproblems,mildtoseverearthritis,brittleandweaknailsandbrittleorrottenteeth,justtonameafew.Calciumisoneofthemostimportantingredientsinacarnivore’sdietandisusuallynotevenincludedintheingredientlistofmostcommercialpetfoods.Ifyoureadtheingredientslistonmostcommercialpetfoodpackaging,youwillseeoneortwoofthefollowingingredients:

• Calciumiodate,acompoundofcalciumusedasadoughconditioner;

• Calciumphosphate,afamilyofmineralsusedinbakingastheacidinaleaveningagent.

Noneofthesecalciumderivativesarefromboneandbonemarrow,theidealsourceforcalcium.Commercialpetfoodisandhasbeenvoidofcalciumsince1860.Don’tletthese‘calciums’foolyou!

Whatexactlyisa‘rawmeatdiet?’

Carnivoresthriveona100%rawmeatdiet,whichsuppliesyourdogandcatwithallofthelivingproteins,vitamins,minerals,enzymesandprobioticstheyneedtolivehealthy,longlives.Rawmeat,however,isnottheonlyrequiredingredient.Thisdietalsoincludesrawboneandbonemarrow,addingmuch-neededcalciumandothermineralandvitaminnutrientstotheirdiet.Thebacteriafoundinrawmeatandboneisessentialtotheirnutritionbecauseithelpsthedogandcatprocessanddigestfood.However,oncerawmeatandbonearecooked,allthoselivingorganismsaredestroyed,renderingthatmeatnutritionallyworthlessandrenderingthebonedangeroustoyourpet.Afterthecommercialpetfoodcookingprocess,anymeatsourcethatmayhaveoriginallybeeninthecommercialpetfoodbecomesnothingmorethanfiller.Thecommonfoodbornbacteriasotoxictohumans(Ecoli,botulismandsalmonella)doesnotaffectcarnivores’digestivesystems.Theirstomachacidsarestrongenoughtokillthesebacteria,andtheirdigestivesystemworkstooquicklytobeaffectedbythebacteria.

Whataboutvegetables?

Dogsandcatscannotdigestvegetablefiberinitswhole,rawform.Forexample,ifyoufeedyourpetapieceofrawcarrot,yourpetwillexpelapieceofrawcarrot.However,ifgroundtoapulp,asisfoundinthestomachliningofcarnivore’sprey,theycandigestit.Carnivoreswillalsoforageforberriesandavocadosbecausetheytastegoodandtheyaresoftenoughfortheirdigestivesystemtoprocesscorrectly.Nonetheless,thereisnonutritionalvalueinfruitsandvegetablesforcarnivores.

Whataboutgrainsandcarbohydrates?

Petfoodcompaniesusegrainssuchaswheat,corn,soy,rice,oatsandbarley(carbohydrates)asbindersandfillers.Theproblem?Carnivorescan’tprocessorbreakdowngrainsandcarbohydrateslikeomnivorescan.Whencarnivoreseliminatethesethings,itleavesatoxicresidueintheirdigestivetractthattheir

bodiescannotabsorb.Thisresidue,alongwiththeothertoxinsincommercialpetfood,createsayeastinfectionthatthebodytriestoexpel,resultinginearinfections,warts,excessiveshedding,cystsandotherskinirritations.

FrequentlyAskedQuestionsMyveterinariantoldmethatIneedtofeedkibbletomypettokeeptheirteethclean.Whenwasthelasttimeyouateacookieanditcleanedyourteeth?NeedIsaymore?Thewaytheynaturallycleantheirteethisbychewingonbonesorhardnaturalsubstanceslikeantlersandhooves.Whentheyarediggingthebonemarrowoutoflargerbonestheyareworkingallsidesandedgesofthebonewhichiscleaningtheirteethaswellascleaningandstrengtheningtheirgums.Ihaveheardthatdomesticatedpetsdonotneedtoeatarawmeatdiet.Historianshaveprovenwithoutadoubtthatdogandcatsweredomesticatedbetweenfourandfivethousandyearsago.Forthesakeofinstructionlet’ssettleonfourthousandyears.Wehavebeenfeedingdogsandcatsdrypetfoodforonly150years.So,whatdidtheyeatfortheother3,850yearsprior?Theyatethepreytheykilled.Whydoesn’tmyveterinarianapproveofarawmeatdiet?Veterinarynutritionaltrainingconsistsofanaverageof40hoursofclasstime.Onlytwoorthreehoursofthistrainingisdedicatedtodogsandcats.Thisnutritionaltrainingissponsoredandconductedbytwoveryprominentcommercialpetfoodcompaniesandisdesignedaroundthe“selling”oftheirproductsratherthantheactualnutritionfordogsandcats.Thepetfoodcompaniessaytheyspendmillionsonresearch.Howcantheybewrong?Thepetfoodcompaniesdospendmillionsofdollarsonresearch.Theyhavealsoconcludedthatcommerciallyprocessedpetfoodisthehealthiestdietfordogsandcats.Thewaythepetfoodcompaniesconductthisexpensivetestingisbytakingcontrolgroupsofdogsandcatsandfeedingthemtheirnewformulaofpetfood.Theywatchthepercentageratesofwhogetssickandwhodoesnot.Whenthepositivepercentageratesarehighenoughaccordingtothatpet
