Hartland has grown from one elementary building to four. The high school has moved from what is now Village Elementary to Highland Road/M-59, which us veterans fondly call “the old high school”, to the current high school. As Hartland continued to grow, the school buildings were reconfigured numerous times to accommo- date the increasing school population. Throughout all of these changes, one thing has stayed consistent and that is the feeling of community. No matter which building you enter, there are staff, parents, and students working together to provide the best education for the children of Hartland. I was extremely excited when I received the phone call that Dr. Behrman wanted to see me about a third grade position at Village. Not only was it the district where I wanted to work, but also the grade level. I have enjoyed, and continue to enjoy, my career at Hartland and cannot imagine working in any other district. This is a fantastic time of year as things green up and the flowers bloom. Soon we will be planting our gardens and hoping for a bountiful harvest. Enrichment activities such as visiting the zoo, museums, local parks and recreational venues are important in the development of our children. If you need help planning, please reach out to our teaching and support staff. I am sure that we can provide many suggestions.

Round Elementary News 810.626.2800Dotty Selix, Principal

@roundelementary

We have had a tremendous school year so far at Round Elementary. Our Lego League was a huge success! Thank you Mrs. Rogers, Mrs. Hull and Mr. Ma-jors for making it a wonderful season!

The Round PTO sponsored the annual Round Rocks Talent Show featuring Round Elementary Teachers. Guests won many exciting prizes, classroom bas-kets, and had an opportunity to bid on dozens of amazing silent auction items. It was a night of great comradery and fun for the Round School Family.

We would like to thank the many sponsors that donated items for the auction and to the PTO for organizing this memorable event. Also thank you to the PTO board and chairpersons who planned the event, and the numerous volun-teers who prepared the classroom, manned the photo booth, created classroom baskets, helped with setup/cleanup, refreshments, and ticket sales. We would also like to send a special thank you to the Round Elementary student judges It was tough to judge the winning performance, but they did a great job!

The event was a huge success! The Round School Family raised over $9,600.00 for students and teachers. PTO money has been used to purchase chromebooks, classroom rugs, and books for the classroom, guided reading library, and media center. We are thankful for your support! We could not pro-vide such an enriching educational experience without you!

Tara Yoerg, a Hartland Graduate, has worked for Hartland Schools for 16 years. She has been teaching Preschool for 8 years. Tara has a Bachelor’s in Educa-tion with her teaching certification from East-ern. Her two boys loved attending Hartland Childcare.

Tracie Waldron, a Hartland graduate, has worked with children for 25 years. Tracie has been teaching preschool for over six years. Tracie has a Bachelors from GVSU. Her three children attended Hart-land Preschool and currently go to Hartland Schools.

Our three year old class focuses on social skills and beginning relationship build-ing. Through mostly play based situations, children begin to understand concepts of sharing, interacting in a large group and following teacher directed activities and instructions. We introduce basic social school concepts such as standing in line, hand washing, eating snack at school, sitting in a group for stories and songs, and waiting for his or her turn. Children learn about the world around them in weekly themes and concepts. Through the use of crafts, projects, games and smart board activities, children learn with fun!

Our four year old class continues to focus on social skills and building relation-ships. We work on kindergarten readiness skills; standing in line, hand washing, eating lunch, sitting in a group for stories and songs, and waiting for his or her turn. We practice fine motor activities; cutting, writing, drawing, painting, play doh, etc. Large motor activities include dancing, gym, playground, and Education Through Music. As with our 3 year old class, children learn with fun while making crafts, projects, playing games and smart board activities. We use programs including Zoo Phonics, Handwriting Without Tears and Second Step.

Zoo Phonics is a method developed to help children become strong readers and spellers using a “phono” (hearing), “oral” (speaking), “visual”(seeing), “kinesthetic” (moving), and “tactile” (touching)- whole brain approach.

Handwriting Without Tears (HWT) is an easy way to teach pre-printing and print-ing. It uses multi- sensory techniques and consistent habits for letter formation to help teach handwriting to all students.

Second Step is a social emotional early learning program that teaches skills to help children learn, manage feelings, make friends, and solve problems.

Education Through Music is a program that utilizes song and intentional movement to develop language, socialization, confidence and joy through singing and play.

Congratulations to Our 2017 Memorial Day Grand Marshal

Ceci MarlowThe Director of Cromaine Library, Ceci Marlow, will be serving as this year’s Grand Marshall of Hart-land’s Annual Memorial Day Parade.

When I had the pleasure to meet with Ceci for this article, she said she wished that all her fellow library staff and Board could ride in the car with her. That is the humble person Ceci is. She became the Director of Cromaine Library back in June of 2008.

If you ever read the quarterly newsletter, you will see how varied the programs the library offers to the community. Ceci explains that decades ago (before the internet, video games, and even television) the public libraries were the cultural centers for commu-nities across the nation. Ceci has attempted to return to this mindset rather than the view that libraries are mere repositories of printed material. The most recent mailing noted events like Teen Thursdays, coloring for grownups, grand parent/ grandkids art workshops and Conversation Café.

Many community residents look forward to the summer concert series that has become a Hartland tradition. These were initiated by Ceci! As the Holiday Season approaches, the Polar Express rides into the Village as one of the newer traditions! Besides her dedicated service to the Library, Ceci serves as an active member of the Community Council. She also serves on The Hero Board, and is an active member of the Hartland Area Chamber of Commerce. She and her team have increased collaborations with community organizations and business sponsors at this point in history when funding from government agencies has been reduced.

Please congratulate Ceci for this well deserved honor as serving as Grand Marshall. You have made the Harland Community a better place for all!

Hartland Rotary’s bowling team made us proud at the Big Brothers Big Sisters “Bowling for Kid’s Sake Event on March 4, 2017. Not that their bowling scores were that great. It was the size of their hearts as they collected a total of $2395. for BBBS of Livingston County. Way to go “Split Ends!”(Matt Ora, Eric Taylor, Mike Horan, Michael Bernardin, Joanne Crain, Norm Crain, and Greg Kirchmeier)

The 19th of April found the Hartland Rotarian sprucing up the Butterfly Garden at Settler’s Park. Weeds were discarded and fresh mulch was spread over and around the trees and scrubs in anticipation for 2017’s arrival of butterflies. Our Little Free Library located at the Butterfly Garden also was cleaned up for spring with a new latch, Rotary Emblem, and plaque.

Sarah Hinkle, Hartland High School Junior, represented Hartland Rotary at RYLA, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, weekend at Camp Copneconic, Fen-ton, April 21-23. She will be sharing her experience with us this summer at one of our Hartland Rotary Meeting.

Hartland Rotary is focusing on our 2nd Annual Shooting Clays Event, August 24, 2017, at the Michigan Shooting Center, Island Lake Recreation Center. The event’s sponsors and participants will be helping support youth programs here in our Hartland Community and Livingston County.

BSA Troop #381 Gathered to Honor David W. Dunville at an Eagle Scout Court of Honor

David selected an Eagle Scout Service Project with personal connections to benefit Deerfield Hills Na-ture Area. David managed the installation of pavers surrounding a bench on a trail in the park which offers respite to handicapped hikers in the park. The bench overlooks the canoe launch built by a fellow Scout from Troop #381 for his Eagle Scout Service Project several years ago.

Assistant Scoutmaster Mike Peterson presented the Significance of the Eagle Rank. Mr. Peterson, who was also David’s Eagle Mentor, had been Cubmaster of Pack 380 when David joined as a Tiger Cub and he shared some highlights of David’s Scouting career before introducing Scoutmaster Ron Trosin II to tell the Legend of Eagle Moun-tain.

Sheriff Mike Murphy presented David with a plaque from the County Board of Commissioners along with a plaque from the Sheriff’s Department. David had received letters of commendation from Governor Rick Snyder, Senators Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters, Representative Mike Bishop, Michigan Senator Joe Hune and Michigan Representative Hank Vaupel.

Scoutmaster Trosin and Assistant Scoutmaster Peterson awarded David his Eagle rank pin and Senior Patrol Leader Ben Portelli replaced David’s neckerchief with a new neckerchief signifying David’s membership in the National Eagle Scout Association. David took to the podium to thank and recognize those who had played memorable roles in his journey to Eagle. The ceremony drew to a close as the Honor Guard retired the flags and Troop Chaplain Jim Bauer returned to deliver the Benediction.

BSA Troop #381 congratulates Eagle Scout David Dunville on achieving Scouting’s highest rank.

Washington and School Street

Dear Friends,

This November will mark my 27th year in the fire service! However, my proudest and most memorable have been the last 16 years. I joined the Hartland Township FD in November of 1990. Then, I went on to get my degree in Fire Science, I even did a small amount of time in the UP as a firefighter. However, the past 16 years I have been blessed and proud to serve residents, and business owners in the Hartland and Deerfield areas as a Fire Marshal.

In 16 years, I have had the opportunity to do many things that not many people get to do, or experience in their entire lifetime! I have met and worked with some of the sharpest and most passionate people in the fire service. I have met and worked with some great developers, fantastic and hardworking politicians, and some of the greatest educators you could ever wish for! Recently, my family and I have been challenged with a decision. A decision that is was very difficult to make.

I have decided that it is time to retire from the fire service. My decision did not come lightly, and I know that I am walking away from a community that most Fire Marshal’s could only dream of. However, my family and I have been given an opportunity of a life-time. I am accepting a job with the federal government. It is a complete career change, but a challenge that I am up to, and looking forward to. The position will allow me to continue to live in the area, and my girls will be able to remain in the Hartland school system!

I would like to take this time to formally thank Chief Adam Carroll for the opportunities I have been given. His leadership and dedication to our community is second to none. Chief Carroll let me take risks, and make some mistakes here and there. His leadership style taught me values, and experiences that will carry me thru the rest of my life. Adam, thank you for being the positive role model and professional that you are! I learned a lot by watching you, and you pushed me in ways that only made me a better person. Thank You Adam.

I would like to thank the Fire Authority Board. Without your support and belief in me, I would not have had the opportunities I did, nor would our community have benefit-ed. The boards’ ability to think outside of the box makes Hartland and Deerfield a very safe place to live. Examples include being the first FD in Livingston County to provide 24/7/365 staffing! Others include the Smoke Alarm program, and supporting me within the Michigan Fire Inspectors Society, and the Michigan Fire Chiefs, and our AutoPulse CPR machine!

But, if it wasn’t for Deputy Chief Gregg Schkade, I would more than likely still be a Firefighter in Menominee, MI. Gregg was the Fire Chief (when we were the Hartland Township FD) that hired me back in March of 2001. I was honored to be Hartland’s sec-ond full time Firefighter in its history! Many people in our community don’t know that Chief Schkade is one of the many reasons that our Fire Authority is such a success today. Gregg, I am lacking the words right now…All I can say is THANK YOU!!

There are tons of people that I need to thank, and I could go on for days naming you all. I would however, like to name a few people that are in need of mentioning: First and foremost; my wife Michelle, and daughters Ashley and Addison. Thank you for all of the dinners and family time I missed, so I could serve our community. You sacrificed a ton for our community, and you were never publically recognized for it. Thank You, and I love you! A huge THANK YOU to the Hartland Schools for carving out precious time that allowed me to teach fire safety to thousands of children over the years….Thank You Jan Doke, Dawn Lubeski, Kate Gregory, Mike Schmidt, Ron Weston, Bill Cain, Rachel Wright, Mary Day…I know that I am missing many more.

Finally, I just want to say THANK YOU to all of the residents that are fire department supporters. No matter what FD jurisdiction you reside in, you are lucky to be living/working in Livingston County! Livingston County as a whole is one of the most progres-sive, and forward thinking counties in the State of Michigan! Many people do not have a clue what their FD members do day in, and day out, until their services are needed.

I am proud to have served alongside them all, and proud to have called the Hartland Deerfield Fire Authority my home. Please remember to check your smoke alarms month-ly, and always have two ways out! If you need help with smoke alarms, or coming up with a custom fire escape plan for you or your family, PLEASE call us….We are here for you!

Yours In Fire Safety,Michael R. Bernardin

Struggling Student Now Gets A’s & B’s - Thanks to Vision Therapy! “By first grade, Davis was significantly behind. He couldn’t keep up or follow directions. His teacher and a special education teacher expressed significant concerns regarding his inability to recall and remember.” “I brought Davis to his pediatrician. The meeting with his doctor did not go well. I was told to lower my expectations. He would never be ‘fixed’. We went to Dr. Doud’s the next day and I broke down crying as I told him what his doctor had stated. I let him know - I knew my little boy was intelligent. He just couldn’t get it out.” “Dr. Doud tested Davis’ vision and discovered that his vision was significantly delayed in several areas. He not only gave me hope - which at that point was all I wanted, but a plan to assist Davis.” After vision therapy, “Davis improved so significantly that at the end of second grade, I was told not to let the 3rd grade teachers know anything was wrong with his ability. He had all A’s and B’s. He was able to keep up and follow directions. His visual memory was 14% when we started vision therapy. It is now near 90%.”

“I am so pleased and cry at the thought of how far he has come. It truly is overwhelming to think of what would have happened to Davis if we would have listened to his pediatri-cian, lowered expectations and accepted this situation, Davis would have failed at school and in life.” We can help—call today!

HARTLAND FARMER’S MARKETExciting things are happening for the Hartland Farmer’s Market.

2017 begins the 14th year of operation including a new permanent location. Rural King has opened their arms to having the market in their parking lot on M-59 behind Burger King and Dairy Queen. (10400 Highland Rd, Hartland, Mi.) The market began in 2004 and Hartland Schools were able to generously offer the parking lot at the HESSC building on M-59 until 2016. That season the market was asked to move to Ore Creek so that the schools could open up the parking area for events held at the auditorium and within the administration building. The Ore Creek location provided challenges and the market is eager to open at the new location.

The season opens May 20th with “Junior Farmer’s” being able to come and plant seeds and take home a small project. All children are welcome to join in the event. Jim Sparks and Kathie Horning will again be volunteering as Co-Market Masters. The 4-H Rangers are extensively involved helping shop-pers take items to their cars, and providing food and beverages. The market offers a huge variety of locally produced items such as pork, beef, turkey, fruits and vegetables, honey and jams, eggs, flowers, baked goods and artisan crafts.

For a very affordable price per week you can set up your table and join the fun and profit! The Farm market runs every Saturday May 20th through October 14th. The Flea market is the first Saturday of each month and the Garage Sale will be on the third Saturday of each month.
