The theory of the genre is laidout along with its central theme of the gettingand deployment of knowledge. SherlockHolmes, the English Classic stories and theirinheritors are examined in light of this themeand the balance of two forms of knowledgeused in fictional detection—cool or rational, andwarm or emotional. The evolution of the genreformula is driven by changes in the socialclimate in which it is embedded. These changesexplain the decay of the English Classic and itsreplacement by noir, hardboiled and spystories, to end in the cul-de-sac of the thrillerand the nostalgic Neo-Classic. Possible newforms of the detective story are suggested.
