Nuclear AMRC: Leveraging our national reach

Industrial regeneration

Orgreave in 1994:

Start of clean-up from 150 years

of mining and coking.

Now: 100 acre Advanced

Manufacturing Park & 740 acre

Waverley community.

At the heart of advanced manufacturingWorld-leading cluster

Purpose-built 8,000m2 facility on the

Advanced Manufacturing cluster, covering:

• Nuclear

• Automotive

• Aerospace

• Medical

• Training

• Import and design - McLaren, Boeing,

Rolls-Royce and also now UKAEA

Factory 2050

Advanced Manufacturing

Park (AMP)

Modularisation

Off-site assembly of large-scale systems, transported to site for final installation.

• Techniques already used in shipbuilding, aerospace and other safety-critical industries.

• Can significantly reduce construction risk for nuclear new build.

• Decommissioning applications.

Nuclear AMRC Birkenhead facility

New centre of excellence for modular manufacturing:

• Based at Cammell Laird.

• Open to all for collaborative R&D.

• Technology transfer & innovation.

Nuclear AMRC Midlands

iHub, Infinity Park, Derby

• New capabilities in equipment

qualification, controls &

instrumentation.

• Flexible workshop to tackle

cross-sector challenges.

Proposed 5,000m2 bespoke facility

• New capabilities to deliver

maximum impact for industry

Core technology themes

• Machining technologies

• Joining technologies

• Additive & near-net shape forming

• Automation & digitalisation

• Control & instrumentation

• Analysis & simulation

• Product & process verification

• Materials, corrosion & thermal engineering

• Codes & standards

• EC&I

• Modules

Our impactProductivity step change from R&D:

• Working with Sellafield to improve manufacturing process of waste

containers

• Showed Westinghouse UK manufacturers can cut production for SMR

pressure vessel by 50%.

• Worked with Rolls-Royce to reduce assembly time for heat exchanger

units by up to 80%.

Sector Role:

• Nuclear Sector Deal co-authored and now working on detail

• SMRs/AMRs we have MoU’s with all developers

• Fusion Development

• Export we work closely with DIT on missions NIS Ltd
