INSTITUTIONAL GOVERNANCE

A flexible governance mechanism allows the institution to make significant strides towards the

realization of its goals. Governance is based on the themes of:

Autonomy and oversight

Each school and administrative function sets their own individual strategies along with

the Vice Chancellor of the institution. Along with the strategy, a set of targets and

boundary conditions are prescribed against which the progress towards realization of

the strategy is measured.

Synergy between academia and administration

Administrative and administrative tracks are kept separate since the people

requirements of individuals in the two tracks are different. Shared services (HR, finance,

payroll management, estate management, international relations, etc.) centares are

established and operated that service all the faculties.

Transparency and accountability

Transparency is present at two levels – institution to external stakeholders and within

the institution. For external stakeholders, annual reports, research publications,

academic and process reports are published. Internally, a 360 degree feedback process

along with recourse for appraisals is present. To ensure accountability, targets are set

every year during the strategy decision phase, against which each function is measured.

External advisory

Statutory academic bodies like Board of Management, Academic Council and Boards of

Studies are represented by external members from academia and industry who provide

useful inputs which are incorporated into the system.

Faculty input

All the statutory bodies of the institute have faculty members representation as

mandated by the UGC regulations. The apex governing body is Board of Management

and tests and to confer, grant or award Degrees, Diplomas, Certificates and other

academic titles and distinctions:

To transfer or accept transfers of any movable or immovable property on behalf of

the Institute:

investments, properties, business and all other administrative affairs of the Institute

and for that the purpose to appoint such agent or agents as it may deem fit.

Students Counseling/ Mentoring

a. One on One Counseling For every 20 students or less a faculty mentor is assigned who takes care of the interests of the students in every way. A few of the areas where mentoring is done include:

Guiding the students in selecting the courses under choice-based curriculum Regular attendance Choosing electives Career counseling Helping students in the courses where they are week by arranging compensatory

courses Students with psychological problems are referred to institute counselor.

Faculty counselors also form WhatsApp groups to be in touch with students and redress their grievances.

Once in 15-20 days formal counseling sessions are announced the counselor has face to face meeting with the students in groups as well as one on one basis. The counselors also keep all the academic records of the students allotted to them and they routinely inform the parents about their wards’ progress and whenever necessary parents

40

of the wards are called to the institute to resolve any contentious issues associated with the students.

b. General Counseling Mentoring of students is done in a systematic manner right from the day the students join the institute. During the first week after admission, the students are collectively mentored on the following areas.

Curriculum and Flexible Credit Based System Research at SRM and Challenges Innovation and Incubation at SRM Science of Well being Examinations and Systems Know your brain. Use it or lose it Career Development & Placement Patriots for life Physical Fitness & Yoga Law and Society Antiragging & Antidrug Awareness SWAYAM – Smart Education Initiative Swachh Bharat Abhiyan& NSS These mentoring sessions are addressed by eminent internal and external speakers.

The outcome of these sessions is that students get positively oriented towards their studies at the outset itself thus reducing the chances of a few of them going astray.

c. Course Committee Meetings Three times in a semester course committee meetings are conducted to discuss the syllabus coverage, quality of teaching based on the feedback by students, performance of students in internal tests and any other grievance related to institutional support facilities like class room ambience, wi-fi etc.

d. HoD Hour In the time table, a specific hour is earmarked in which the HoD or a senior faculty member visits a class and has freewheeling discussion with the students on course contents, career, industry and aspects of lifelong learning.

e. Open House Once in a semester all the class representatives attend open house session chaired by Vice Chancellor, Pro Vice Chancellor, senior administrators and HoDs. Students are mentored on their career options, higher studies, entrepreneurship, start-ups. Students also utilize this opportunity to offer suggestions on any improvements that may be made on systems and processes.
