KApril 26 - May 2, 2015MAMBALAM TIMES: Ashok Nagar - K.K.Nagar Edition

By M. A. SADANAND

NO HOLDS BARRED

Green Miles

As a child, I would sit atop the patio of aunty Madhavi’s

house, nestled amidst miles of green paddy fields, and

watch her son-in-law Sreedharan Nair, with a full palate

of oil colours, making the canvas on the easel come alive

with each stroke. I would not imagine then that all over

the world thousands of soldiers were trying to kill each

other to win the World War 2 Cup. Most days when there

was no school, I used to be a fixture in the said patio. If I

had persisted with my self education, I would perhaps

have overtaken Raja Ravi Varma! Things petered out -

and mostly panned out - pushing me into an unchartered

lawyer’s life, filled with love for all creations and malice

towards none!

The kind old Truman, with love for the suffering human-

ity, declared his innings closed after his two batsmen, the

atom bombs, had in a trice sent thousands of the good, the

bad and the uglies to their infernal abode. Earlier, our own

Subash Chandra Bose was chosen as India’s representa-

tive by proxy and remains an eternal enigma to those who

specialise in making the imagination run riotto make him

a super human, savoured by readers of action thrillers of

the Wild West.

Some of them are petitioning God to lift the veil of

secrecy to reveal the indestructible hero who, according

to their reading of India’s modern history, won freedom for

Bharat from the White hyenas. These incurable insom-

niacs have, along with a brand new flag, been given the

constitutional right to believe that the breath of truth

blows through every speck of the atom of our Constitu-

tion. I believe in letting go of the past and not muddy the

present with unnecessary dissections. We are pure not

merely because Gandhi, Nehru, Bose and many more

unnamed freedom fighters inhaled and exhaled the spiri-

tual air of this wonderful land, but that this land Bharat

has been holy from time immemorial and that is one up

on the others, a unique diktat.

You live by your credowhich,if diagnosed in good time,

acts as a natural draw to those with a spark of holiness.

It is therefore not surprising that our country was over-

flowing with amazing individuals such as SC Bose who put

the country before self and radiated the kind of patriotism

and spirit that made this land a truly liveable placein

harmony with all creations, irrespective of the colour of

the skin or assumed sins. It is very much like the island

of peace I experienced as a boy of tenwatching the

emerald green fields of paddy, nursing a cup of steaming

tea on my aunt’s patio long, long ago.

LETTERS TO THE EDITORCeiling on Post Office Savings account should be

removedSir, The Post Office Savings Bank rule prescribes a ceiling of Rs. 1 lakh

for single accounts and Rs. 2 lakhs for joint holder accounts. The ceiling

was alright when the value of rupee was high but over the years the value

of rupee has considerably declined and the ceiling should be removed

or enhanced considerably. – K. Vaidyanathan, 15/1, North Usman

Road, T. Nagar

Avoid revealing PAN number unless mandatorySir, Sometime back, the Income Tax Department had come out with

an advisory to the public that they should avoid revealing Permanent

Account Number (PAN) while booking train tickets. Many passengers

provide their PAN for Tatkal bookings leading to the number and name

of the holder coming into public domain. The notification stated that

citing one’s PAN while booking railway tickets could be a grave security

hazard as the Indian Railways displays the PAN, name, sex, age of the

passengers on the reservations charts. Fraudsters and traders use these

details for benami transactions. The above advisory came very true the

other day, when our Association’s secretary had been to the Chennai

Central Station to see off one of his relatives. He noticed a youngster

peering at the reservation charts pasted on the train and noting details

on a paper. Realizing that something was amiss, he confronted the

youth. The youth said that he was appointed by an agent to note down

the name of the passenger with details of sex/age and the PAN which

are indicated in the reservation chart. He further said that he is paid Rs.

20 per listing. The details are sold to traders for benami transactions. In

view of the above, the public are requested not to reveal the PAN for

transactions other than wherever it has been made mandatory by the

Income Tax Department. The Railways lists many other options for

proof of identity like Aadhaar card, voters’ photo identity card, passport,

driving license to name a few. While the Railways must launch a drive

to bring to book those behind this, it must avoid giving details of PAN

in the reservation chart in the larger interest of the traveling public.—

CMWSSB yet to issue new tax cardsSir, Chennai Metro Water Supply & Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) has

not yet issued the new water and sewerage tax cards to consumers for

payment of the tax and levy in this regard. The card was last issued in 2010

and was valid for payments up to March 31 of this year. The authorities

in charge should have got the new cards printed much in advance and

kept them ready for distribution in the first week of April. Advance

payment of the taxes due must be rewarded with an incentive of 5% to

maximize collection and achieve their targeted collection easily and

quickly instead of frantic last minute action of announcements requesting

the tax payers to pay the dues before the 31st of March. I hope the

authorities take prompt action to issue the new cards.—K.
