INTRODUCTION
My topic , men and cosmetic surgery. reveals many aspeets of male cosmetic
surgery on both an individual and societal level. Chapter I ormy Personal Jnteres1
Projcc:1 examines the origins of male cosmetic surgety. Whilst illustrating the history
of cosmetic su,cery for men through time, it also ponmys changing socie1al views.
Chap1er 2 prescn1s 1he 1ypcs of persons (specifically males) who decide 10 un<icrgo
cosmetic surgery as ,1,-ell as the procedures that are mos1 common. and Chapter 3
analyses why males choose to undergo cosmetic surgery (again. ano1her retlec1ion on
socieial values). Chap1er 4, 11te final cha pier. is written from a complerely social and
eultu:ml perspective, since it discusses how popular and acoeptablc cosmetic suf'8ery
is for men prcscn11y in our soc iety.
Although 1here is extensive infonnation on female co.sme1ic surgery, the facts
and de1ails for male cosme1ic surge,y pales in comparison, which begged the question
·v,hy'7 Why ts it thal we have less infonnation available on males and cosmetic
surcery? Is this a reflection of socie1al values and gendered stereotypes· that men
should not concede to vanity? Also. does our percep1ion of men within our culture
change through time, or dOC$ i1 remain static? ln addition. who arc the men that decide
to undergo cosmetic sureery. and what made them choose to alter their appearance?
With so many questions on a social as well as individual level that cmmcd from one
simple obscrva1ion. J decided 10 research this ropic in n auemp1 to uncoycr some
answers, or at least gain a greater understanding. as 10 why there is an imbalance of
information between female and male cosmetic s,rrzery, and whether this was a
reflection upon society.
This 1opie contn'bu1cs 10 a better undernanding of Society and Culture as ii
encompasses many orttte fundamental key concepts comprising the oosis of the
course. The socieu,I and cultural aspec1s arc most preva lent in my Personal 1nterest
Project a combinarion of the two concepts inter·Hnk to provide perspeei:ive on male
