As citizens of the state ofMaharashtra we pay our obeisance to the land to which we owe our identityand which is our ‘karmabhoomi’.We are in the midst of a pandemic which has affected the planet for over ayear and a half now. The advances in drug testing and pharmacy field haveensured that India is equipped with certain life-saving vaccines which havebeen produced in record time and are saving the life of a huge population. The challenge lies in administering the same to the huge populace withinthe shortest possible time frame. Pharmacists are playing an equally vitalrole alongside the doctors and nurses to achieve this herculean task. SKBCollege of Pharmacy has always been on the forefront in spreadingawareness amongst masses and society to come forward and getvaccinated and we take this opportunity again to appeal to the readers toget themselves vaccinated at the earliest. In these difficult times Pharmacy colleges have endeavored to work withsociety at large as a part of their social responsibility in creating aresponsible and safe future for the society. The AICTE Lilavati Award to twocolleges has been the appreciation of it in one format. Pharmacy Practice and Prescription Fee
Note: The opinion’s are writers personal opinion.
I NS T

NAL
NEWS
In each profession practising is the best lucrative option
for the qualified professional for better living hood.
Similarly, our Pharmacy is a profession and pharmacist
can do Pharmacy practice easily to earn respect and
money both. Pharmacists are called "Expert of Drugs " by
virtue of their education. Hence, they should utilise their
expertise while working in hospital or in community
pharmacy. Till today community Pharmacy could not get
identity as profession. It is still considered as trade. It can
be easily overcome by Pharmacists by providing patient
counselling at the counter.
Pharmacy Council of India has enacted 'Pharmacy
Practices Regulations 2015 ' and also inserted " Pharmacy
Practice" subjects in Pharmacy syllabus to strengthen
pharmacists legally and professionally. Besides diagnosis
by physicians, the role of pharmacists is much more
effective in treatment of diseases which covers timely
right dose at right time, right way of administration with
proper food and its combination with other drugs, proper
care of patients in home, prevention of diseases,
immunisation programme, provide drug safety, minimise
medication error etc. Pharmacists would gain
Dr R. N. GuptaEminent PharmacistChairman Hospital Pharmacy Divisionand Vice PresidentIndian Pharmaceutical AssociationProfessor Dept of PharmacyBirla Institute of TechnologyMesra [email protected]
recognition as best practitioner by providing patient
counselling on the above-mentioned matters. Provided
we start today or tomorrow and certainly it will be
rewarded as consultation fee and generations of faith
among patients about us.
In corroboration of above and for the support of
pharmacist, in the year 1984 Lentin Commission has
recommended to charge Rs.0.50 per prescription as
"Prescription Fee" during sale at retail drug store which
is to be given to pharmacist sitting at the counter. This
was recommended with remark that it will attract
qualified Pharmacist to join retail drug store and patient
will be benefitted by the presence of pharmacist at retail
drug (pharmacy). That time Govt and the commission
had felt the importance of presence of pharmacist at
retail counter for quality Pharmacy service and to avoid
dispensing error at counter. But it was unfortunate on
our part that we could not utilise "Prescription Fee "
even after recommendation. The market value of Rs.0.50
of the year 1984 is equivalent to Rs.75 .00 today in 2021.
One can imagine the no. of prescription being handled in
Pharmacy per day.
In view of above Pharmacists are requested to awaken
and to start Pharmacy practice from today wherever they
are in hospital or in community (drug store) pharmacy.
They should extort and utilise their knowledge to earn
better living hood. Future is ours for establishing our vital
role in treatment of patient not only as a mere dispenser
of drugs at counter but as supportive role in treatment of
patient by quality pharmacy services.
