THE PRINCIPALMESSAGE FROM

Dear Parents,

Welcome back to Term 2 and a special welcome to all of our new families that have joined us in January. I trust everyone enjoyed the three week break and had time to relax and spend time with your children. We are well and truly into the swing of Term 2 with a number of assemblies, trips and sporting events already occurring. The Year Twos even made it to Disneyland! Today the Year Sixes had their “Explorers” dress up and share day with a wide range of explorers represented from modern day mountaineers to ancient Greeks. Jocelyn Sumner deserves a special mention for researching “Pytheas”, a little known but famous Greek explorer. Being resourceful, she contacted Sir Barrington Windsor Cunliffe a Professor of European History at Oxford to find out more about her explorer. He kindly wrote back to Jocelyn sharing his joy in her choosing Pytheas!

Year 1 Admissions

We are currently interviewing over 200 four year old children for placement as Year One Kennedy School students for the 2018/2019 school year. It is an opportunity for us to meet the children and our new prospective parents before they join Kennedy School. I have had the pleasure of interviewing all the parents and many already have children with us at Kennedy School. It seems we have many happy campers!

Saturday June 13th CPD day with West Island School

Last Saturday the Kennedy School teachers spent the day at West Island School with their teaching staff. The aim of the day was to share our thoughts, experience and expertise in the different pedagogical styles between Kennedy School and West Island School. We continue to grow our close relationship with West Island School and we have some exciting plans for next year to further grow this important connection and relationship.

2018/2019 Calendar list

Please see attached the Kennedy School 2018/2019 school calendar including the Kennedy School CPD days. We have again ensured that our calendar aligns with West Island School to support those families with children in both schools. Please click here to view.

School Uniforms

Please ensure that your children adhere to the Kennedy School uniform policy. Particularly, please do not have your children wear layers of under shirts or other non-school clothing that can

be seen. It was 24 degrees today and a number of our children were dressed for minus 24 degrees in New York City !! I will now begin to send letters home with those children who continually ignore the uniform rules. See attached.

WIS/KS Alumni news

The vast majority of our students go to West Island School. I thought you would be interested in hearing about some of the wonderful things our ex Kennedy School students are doing in the world. Please click here to view.

Extra-Curricular Clubs

We have a very extensive range of teacher led after school clubs, however, unfortunately there is only a limited amount of places so please discuss with your child if they really wish to join a club before you sign them up. Also to be noted, we will no longer be able to make any exceptions for children who fail to sign up through the Gateway in time.

Once again, welcome back to Term 2.

Don’t forget to dress up on January 26th for Book Week!

KENNEDY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER 4

People can be allergic to many different things. At Kennedy School we have children with a wide range of allergies, from moderate allergies to fruits, pets and the environment to very severe allergies to dairy, egg, nuts, and seafood. When someone is allergic to something, like egg or nuts, the immune system overreacts to proteins in these foods. Every time the person eats (or, in some cases, handles or breathes in) the allergy-causing food, the body thinks the proteins are harmful invaders. The immune system responds by kicking into high gear to fend off the “invader.” This causes an allergic reaction, in which chemicals like histamine are released in the body. This would cause the affected student to have a severe and possibly life threatening allergic reaction requiring medication (Epi-Pen, Antihistamine, Inhalers) and possible hospital care.

As our community is composed of a wide range of cultures, religions and traditions it is not possible for us to impose a ban on certain foods. Research also shows that the best possible ways to prevent allergic reactions are to teach the individual student how to navigate in a world filled with their potential allergens, and to educate the other students around them on symptoms of allergic reactions and how to help keep their friends safe.

At Kennedy School we focus on teaching the allergic children how to protect themselves as much as possible. We also do a lot in educating the whole school about allergies, reactions and how to treat an allergic reaction. Talks in classes and at assembly are common. Specifically in Year 2 there is a big emphasis on hygiene and how germs spread and in Year 4 students learn about how the different systems in the body work together and what happens if one of the systems is failing. This includes conditions like asthma, severe allergic reactions and high blood pressure. We also have a “No sharing of food” policy in place, which helps keep all of our students with various food allergies as safe as we possibly can in a large primary school of 900 students.

How can you help?:

could be allergic to some of the food that he/she brings in his/her lunchbox, and why it is so important not to share food with others while at school. Remind your child to try and eat as “clean” as possible, so he/ she doesn’t spread a lot of crumbs, as these could potentially be very dangerous to a child with an allergy to that particular food.

Talk to your child about thorough face and hand washing after eating at school, and help us make sure that your child has a clean face and hands before leaving to go to school.

For those parents with a child in Year 1, where we have young students with very severe dairy/egg and nut allergies and where little hands tend to go everywhere, we ask that you please be thoughtful and sensitive to this issue when making your child’s snack/lunch and reinforce hand and face washing at home and remind your child that their food is only for them.

KENNEDY WELLNESS CORNER

This time of year the activity for Influenza, Scarlet Fever and many other infectious diseases is very high in Hong Kong, and it is often hard work to try and keep ourselves and our children healthy enough to be able to fight off all the germs. When working properly, our immune system is designed to fight disease and keep bacteria and viruses from making us sick. If weakened we and our children are more susceptible to colds, flu and other infectious diseases. Therefore it is important to try and boost our children’s immune systems as much as possible to keep them healthy and strong. Making sure your child gets enough sleep and exercise daily are very important key points to keeping their immune system strong, but research has shown that the following foods may have a positive impact on boosting your child’s immune system.Fruit and vegetables:All fruits and vegetables contain different vitamins and minerals, so it is important that your child gets a good variety, in particular vitamin C and carotenoids which are responsible for the red, yellow and orange colours in many fruits and vegetables. We know these phytonutrients have immune boosting qualities that help the body create more white blood cells which are responsible for fighting infection. Go for whole foods instead of juices or supplements, as the whole piece of fruit/vegetable has a lot more nutrients and fibre. Some vegetables to highlight are Broccoli (has a number of immune system boosters such as vitamins C,A,E and also a lot of antioxidants); Spinach (has Vitamins A, E, C and K, folate, manganese, zinc, selenium and iron – all nutrients that work in different ways to enhance the immune system); and Sweet Potatoes (are a great source of Vitamin C and high in beta-carotene, which in some studies have shown to increase the number of white blood cells and increase the activity of killer cells - These are the cells that fight bacteria, viruses, and other intruders in our bodies.).Berries:Berries are full of antioxidants, which helps keep the immune system strong! Frozen berries are said to be just as good and healthy as fresh berries. Oily fish:Omega-3 fatty acids have many health benefits and are found in oily fish e.g. salmon, mackerel, herring, and fresh tuna. Not only are these fats essential for developing brains, they also reduce inflammation, which increases airflow and protects the lungs from colds and respiratory infections. The latest research also indicates that these fatty acids may boost your child’s immune system by enhancing the function of immune cells.

Nuts and seeds:By eating a wide variety of seeds (such as pumpkin, sunflower and flax seeds) and nuts (such as almonds, walnuts, pecans and hazelnuts) your child will be getting vitamin E, zinc, manganese and omega 3 fatty acids, all of which help your child’s immune system and will enhance the natural killer cell activity. Yogurt:Full of protein and calcium, yogurt is a healthy diet addition. Research points to the probiotics in yogurt working to stimulate the immune system and help balance out harmful bacteria in the gut. Egg:Research has shown that when a person is low in vitamin D, they are more susceptible to illness. Eggs are one of the only foods with naturally occurring vitamin D. They also include a number of other immune-boosting nutrients, such as B vitamins and selenium.Variety is the key! Choose a wide range of healthy foods such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains and lean protein to keep your child’s immune system healthy and strong. Aim to serve your child five portions of fruit and vegetables a day. Whether they’re fresh, frozen, tinned (in own juice) or dried, they can be incorporated into their main meals, puddings, snacks or small smoothies. We hope these ideas help you find ways to include these immune system boosting foods for kids in their diets as much as possible! HENRIETTE TEUCHLER AND ESTELLE LICENCE HEALTH PROFESSIONALS

BOOK WEEK IS NEARLY HERE: 22ND - 26TH JANUARY 2018

Sarah Brennan’s visitOn Wednesday, local author Sarah Brennan visited Kennedy School. This was a perfect way to kick off Book Week for 2018 (which is officially next week). Sarah delighted the children with her presentation of the new book - ‘The Tale of Desmond Dog’ - which is in fact the 11th in her Chinese Zodiac series. Sarah gave lots of background to the story, which included historical detail and how she developed the characters, as well as reading the story to the children. The book is written in narrative poetry style which is engaging for the children and easy to listen to. The illustrations were once again provided by Harry Harrison. The children seemed to absolutely love the sessions and were totally enthralled with the story.

Pyjama Party StoriesThere are many big events coming up. For those children (Years 3-6) who wish to go to the ‘Pyjama Party Bedtime Stories’ in the library next Tuesday, they will need to bring their pyjamas (and a soft toy) to school and change at lunchtime.

Teachers vs Students Book QuizThe Teachers vs Students Book Quiz on Thursday is attracting a lot of attention. We now have 10 student teams (Years 3 and 4) taking part and attempting to beat the teachers. Those children that wish to come along and support are very welcome. This will be in the hall at 12-30.

Every door is a BookSome of the classroom doors have now turned into giant book covers. By the end of next week, all of the classrooms will have been transformed. Have a look at them and see which is your favourite.

CompetitionsThe photo competition (reading in unusual places) and the story movie making competition (book trailers) close at the end of this week. More than 200 children have entered these two competitions so far which is just amazing! Winners will be announced next Friday.

The ‘Guess the Teacher behind the Book’ competition will run all next week. Look out for the photos around school.

Stories in the playgroundNext week every break and lunchtime teachers will be reading stories in the playgrounds, the hall and many other places. Listen out for the announcements each morning to find out who is reading where.

In the classroomsThere are many, many events happening in classrooms all week, from book making to book swaps, buddy reading to story sack making.

Book Character DayBook Week will culminate in our Book Character Day next Friday. All teachers and children will come to school dressed as a favourite book character. This will be an exciting day with lots of photos taken. If you haven’t already decided who you will be, think about it over the weekend and sort out your costume.

An exciting week is in store for everyone…

KENNEDY PE AND GAMES KITPlease ensure that your child wears their PE shorts under their track pants. While it may be cold outside in the shade it is warm inside the gym and in the sun on the HKU pitches. Track pants are not suitable for athletic activities as many are ill fitting creating the potential for slips and falls. Some children also find it difficult to regulate their body temperature which creates the risk of overheating and dehydration, especially when they wear numerous layers. We follow the Education Bureau and ESF Health and Safety Guidelines: • Girls and boys with long hair must have it tied back.• Watches and jewellery must be removed or covered. • The school cannot be held responsible for these

items. • Therefore jewellery and watches should be removed

and kept at home on days when your child has either PE or Games.
