Year 12 – Year 13 - Ms. S. Murphy – Year Leader [email protected]

Form Time Focus

The week has been an exciting one in terms of raising awareness of many important aspects globally. On Sunday 10th October it was World Mental Health Day, and Alisha in Year 12 created a presentation to raise awareness of how to look after our mental health giving useful strategies. Rathin in Year 13 complemented this by sharing a short TED Talk video highlighting the importance of taking a break which we know in the DP programme is important.

On Monday, the students had a presentation by Ms Huet, EISM SENCO, to raise awareness and provide an insight into the experiences of a learner with dyslexia. The information was very thought-provoking with students considering various

scenarios drawing out comparisons between learners.

Sunday, 17th October, as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, all students and staff are encouraged to wear a pink top along with their school trousers and black shoes. Year 12 Students who have the MYP Awards ceremony will need to change their pink top for their white shirt and tie. Monday, 18th October 7-9 PTCs will take place therefore high school students are not in school. Their work will be posted on Managebac for them to complete asynchronously through the day.

Year 12 PTCS

Information regarding the Year 12 PTCs has been sent out to all parents. The PTCs will take place week beginning Sunday 24th October. Similar to last year, individual teachers will contact you with their availability to discuss academic progress with you. If you are unable to attend the Zoom call on the day, please contact the class teacher to make arrangements at another mutually convenient time.

Year 13

In preparation for exam registration all students need to have completed their plans on Managebac. Here students state the 6 subjects they are taking in the DP along with whether they are higher or standard level. Most students have completed this.

Extended Essay

Students are requested to continue working on their first draft according to their supervisor's feedback and are encouraged to arrange to meet their supervisor if guidance is needed. Students who are yet to submit their first draft are encouraged to do it before mid-term break in order to allow their supervisors to check it. Next step : To ensure the first two interim reflections are complete,

Mathematics - Mr. C. O’Shea - Subject Leader [email protected]

We have completed another fantastic week exploring mathematical concepts here at EISM. By now all students have had their

first summative assessment and some will have received feedback on this already.

Feedback is paramount in getting students where they need to be. Each student has the responsibility to take action and

engage in the feedback process with their teacher. Here are some tips and information to maximise the effectiveness of

feedback given by the Mathematics Department.

- The student will be provided with feedback from their assessment through “What Went Well” (WWW), “Even Better

If” (EBI) and “Next Steps” statements.

- Students will also be asked to construct a brief action plan on how they can improve their work going forward. This

will be referred to as “Action”.

- All students should use Dr.Frost Maths, MyiMaths and Corbett Maths websites to practice key skills, fill knowledge

gaps and rectify any misconceptions highlighted by their teachers from their formative & summative assessments.

Year 10: Students have almost completed their study of the ancient Italian form of physical comedy, called Commedia Del' Artej, having performed devised scenes using the Commedia stock characters. This week we will look at how these characters have influenced characters in well-known modern shows and movies. Year 11: Students have begun work on a mock eportfolio. Students have now performed their devised creations and will now focus on completing the written and video components. Year 12: Students will have an opportunity to explore their own ideas for how to direct a production, thinking of everything from staging concept to lighting, costumes, sound, and more.

This week Year 7 Students completed their health and fitness components assessments, Year 8 have been working on their sports specific circuit workouts assessments and Year 9 were continuing with the different training methods to put together their fitness plans. After the half term all boys in Years 7 – 9 will be on their Net Sports unit.

All girls in Years 7 – 9 will be in the pool for their Swim/Water Survival unit.

As swimming is part of our PE Curriculum, any student who is unable to swim will need to provide a medical certificate to

explain why they are unable to participate. If a you do provide a medical certificate you will be given a student coaching role,

which means you should still come to school in PE kit and be prepared to stand poolside. Students with long hair should

ensure that it is tied back, and we would advise the use of a rubber swim cap to keep their hair dry and bring pair of goggles as

we are unable to provide these in school.

Please ensure you get the school swim kit from Right Fit.

With our teams and sports ASAs back in action, we are now looking forward to DASSA. At the moment matches for this term should start at the beginning of November. Once we have confirmation, teams will be informed and the teams board in the Sports Hall will be updated. The PHE Department are aware of the issues regarding PHE kit. You are expected to come to PHE lessons in the appropriate school kit. If you do not have this as of yet, please wear black shorts and a black shirt to lessons until you have the school kit.

On the 11th of October, we celebrated Dyslexia Awareness at school. During form time all students were presented with an interview of one of our High School Students with Dyslexia. Our student has given us an insight of what Dyslexia is and its impact on life as a student. As Dyslexia is not well understood yet, there are many myths about Dyslexia. Find below some responses from our student to help shed light on some of the truths and myths.

1. An individual with dyslexia may find reading difficult and therefore does not like to read!

How do you feel about reading?

I like reading Science Fiction! Fiction allows you to imagine, you can add whatever you want.

What’s your favorite book?

You’re not going to see me holding a book, but if you do, it means that this book is great. One of my favorite books is Girl on a Plane by Miriam Moss. It is a fictionalized account of true hijackings.

2. An individual with dyslexia does not write.

How do you feel about writing?

When I write on paper I get to highlight and underline but it takes a lot of time, so sometimes I prefer to type. Yes, I even have a diary!

3. Learners with Dyslexia have co-occurring or associated difficulties, such as finding organisation challenging or

memorizing information difficult.

Are you an organised person?

I try my hardest to stay organised. Sometimes it’s really difficult depending on the number of tasks I have to complete. I have a schedule that I have to work with and I keep reminders to help me with time management. Sometimes they don’t work: I put the wrong timing and forget about them! I try to be organized as much as I can.

4. Individuals with Dyslexia have strong spatial awareness and process information in 3D. Many individuals with

Dyslexia excel in areas such as Art, Architecture, Athletics, Music, Engineering among others.

What are your favorite subjects at school?

Drama and Music, because it’s fun and I get to show my artistic side; which I cannot really show in the other subjects.

What does Dyslexia bring to you?

My creative side. It’s much higher (more developed)! I think creatively. As a kid, I liked to invent things. I would always invent stuff that would sometimes be helpful. I have a different point of view. When there’s a problem, I’ll have a different way to solve it.

Access Consciousness is a set of tools that allow you to have more consciousness in your life. This is a hands on energy healing process, available in a few centres in Dubai, that uses energy centers or bars located on the head, and unlock them using gentle touch. Research shows that people improved their mental health and created a new way of dealing with conditions like anxiety, stress and overwhelm. Access Bars are 32 points on the head that are connected to every aspect of your life, your health and your being. A gentle soothing touch that releases the electromagnetic charge of all thoughts, patterns, and beliefs that limit individuals and hold them back from achieving what they truly can. Access Bars can help you to be in a state of mindfulness which brings ease in daily decisions, choices, and empowers you. Access Bars can help children to increase distress management capacity, improve concentration, improve interpersonal relationships, and decrease/eliminate nightmares and anxiety. Year 13 - Early applications for UCAS and Common App have been sent off this week. All Year 13 Students should ensure they have selected and asked 3 teachers to write subject references. This must be done before the break so that everything can be completed on time. Year 12 and Year 13 - IELTS meeting with the British Council will be rearranged for after the break for those students who will need to take this English proficiency exam. Please come back knowing whether you need to do this or not to satisfy your university entry requirements or for a visa to that country. The provisional date is 18th December for the test which will be exclusively for EISM students. The school is facilitating this only but all payments will need to be made directly online by parents once students have registered at school. By the time we break up, I will have met all secondary classes and all students will have had their first Careers lesson. In lower secondary students have explored topics such as - What makes a good employee? and we have looked at how students can

build up their Competencies towards building a fantastic application later on. Students have created desktop folders with a list of 11 subtitles such as Aiming High/Leadership/Speaking which they should build up over the next few years with activities and events they have participated in. When you send off a university application, admissions officers will read about your achievements and determine what kind of a person you are. For example, under Aiming High - you may have set a goal for yourself and then worked towards achieving it or maybe you have overcome a fear by pushing yourself to do something - this tells a university that you are a motivated person who is able to set a challenge and push through difficulties in order to be successful. They want students with these personal characteristics. Good grades alone are just not enough anymore. In the higher secondary years students have completed the UCAS Buzz Quiz which have generated profiles and careers which may suit their personality and interests. The main point here is that students need to be open minded about what they may want to do for a career and whilst they still have time they should explore everything in order to come to a clear informed decision, by the beginning of Year 13, about which courses they wish to apply for at university.
