Dear Red Hawks,

Thank you! You are the most generous and amazing service leaders! Congratulations to every Red Hawk – students, staff members, parents, and community members. You should be very proud of raising $117,706.46 for the Alex’s Saints Foundation and thrilled knowing your efforts will help those in need. It was great to have Charity Week back and to have students at school dancing, laughing, and having fun together! To our seniors, I hope that Charity Week is one of your many fond memories and that you come back to visit and support future Charity Weeks.

March 3rd are virtual Parent/Teacher conferences. The goal is to give parents an opportunity to connect with teachers and speak candidly about learning progress and needs. We encourage students to attend with their parents. If you were unable to secure an appointment, please reach out to your teacher, coun-selor, or administrator at any time. We want the best for you and are happy to meet or talk another day.

This Sunday, the temperature will be in the mid-50s. Next weekend, March 13th, we will spring forward. March 24th is the end of third quarter and beginning of SPRING BREAK. The pace of school always seems to pick up in March, perhaps it is akin with the name. Below are a few tips to make the most of our time together:

• Use your calendar to both stay focused and build in time for balance. • Look at your attendance and third quarter grades; set goals for completing third quarter well. • Share your goals and needs with your teachers. • Attend after-school tutoring and/or get a study buddy. Working with others can be both helpful and

motivating. • Praise yourself when you give something your best effort.• Identify one thing each month that you are looking forward to; being excited for future endeavors

helps maintain a positive outlook.

Congratulations to all the students celebrated in the newsletter. It is so very impressive to see so many of our Red Hawks going above and beyond to learn, experience new things, push themselves, grow, and achieve new standards.

Parent-teacher conferences are scheduled for Thursday, March 3rd, from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Par-ents will sign up for conferences with individual teachers using Conference Manager. Please visit https://athenshs.schoolsoft.com/ . If it is your first time visiting, click “REGISTER NOW”. Once you create an account, you will be able to select the teachers with whom you would like to meet. If you attended previous conferences at Athens, you do not need to register again. You may simply log in and select your teachers. Parents will be able to book conferences thru Thurs-day, March 3rd at 5:00 p.m.

Other Noteworthy information:

• Conferences will be held virtually via Zoom. Make sure to have downloaded Zoom before conferences.

• To help teachers stay on schedule, use your first and last name as your Zoom name. If you need help changing your name, use the following link: https://www.techjunkie.com/zoom-change-name/

• When you click on a teachers Zoom link, you will be brought into their waiting room. When the teacher is ready to meet with you, they will admit you into their Zoom meeting.

• Conferences are five minutes in length. Please be courteous and conscientious of this when meeting with teachers because the timing of your conference will impact future confer-ences.

• Counselors and social workers will be available for appointments for the conference session.

If you cannot attend conferences, you can always contact your student’s teachers throughout the school year to discuss their progress. Let us know if you have any questions and we hope you have a great night on March 3rd.

The Athens Attendance line 248.823.2901 needs to be notified at least two hours prior to students leaving the building. The student will receive a Schoology message that they will use as their pass to show the teacher and Safe Ed. This allows as little interrup-tion to the educational process as possible. It also enables the student to meet their parent/guardian at their car as opposed to the parent/guardian coming into the building to check the student out.

2022 High School Summer School

Online registration for High School Summer School begins April 4th. https://www.troyceonline.com/programs/hsss

Secondary Math Test-Out Applications Middle and High School students may waive a mathematics course requirement by testing out of a particular course. The requirements for testing out can be found on the Troy School District website https://www.troy.k12.mi.us/departments/teaching-learning under "Test-Out Guidelines". Study guides for each course can also be found under "Math Test-Out Study Sheets".

The Math test out application form must be completed on-line through the PowerSchool Parent/Student Portal. Submissions will be accepted between March 4 - April 4, 2022. The Math Test-Out exams will occur at your child’s building during the week of May 2nd. More information will be provided in April to those regis-tered. State Assessment UpdatesState Assessment UpdatesAll students, including virtual students, are required to participate in state assessments. Virtual students will take the assessments with their home school.

The required state assessments include WIDA ACCESS for ELLs, PSAT 8, PSAT 9, PSAT 10, SAT, WorkKeys and M-STEP for grades 6, 7, 8 and 11.

The 2021-2022 Battle of the Books list has been officially published! It is located on the next page of this newsletter. Every year, we team up with Troy High and International Academy East to read as many books as possible from the list. At our Battle of the Books event on May 20th, there will be prize giveaways, a trivia competition, and Zoom sessions with the authors. Any students who participate in reading are welcome to attend!

NHS Tutoring

We do not permit NHS volun-teers to tutor at the homes of students/families. Tutors are available Monday-Thurs-day in the Tutoring Center. Please direct students to use the after-school program. If after-school tutoring is not convenient for the family, tutors are available at the Boys & Girls Club.

Spring Sports 2022

Spring Sports tryouts are scheduled to begin on Monday, March 14th. In order to be eligible, a student must have passed five classes in the first semester. If this is the first sport your student is playing. they must turn in their Physical Card to their coach and have a Final Forms account set up. Both player and parent will have to complete forms necessary to participate in sports. If this is not your student's first sport that they are participating in, please be sure that your Final Forms account information is updated. Also, prior to the first official team practice, all athletes need to take care of the Pay to Particpate fee which is done through SchoolPay. Please visit the Athens-Athletics website for the most up to date sports information.

The Troy School District has partnered with FinalForms, an online forms and data management service, for athletics. The most exciting news is that the FinalForms saves data from season-to-season and year-to-year, meaning that you will never need to enter the same information twice! FinalForms also pre-populates information whenever possible, for each of your student-athletes, saving you time. We are asking that ALL parents of student-athletes use FinalForms.

Both coaches will have a Tryout Tournament (weather permitting) that starts March 14th. The Sanctuary Lake and Sylvan Glen golf courses charge the students a small fee to walk 9 holes ($10.00 per 9 holes). Walking pull carts are permitted in high school golf. Once the teams are named, the Pay-to-Participate will take place and no more fees will be required at the course. The schedule will be posted on the Golf Schoology page (Mr. Schoonover will send). All participants will play the SAME 9 HOLES each day. The Tryout Tournament will be at least three days. At the start of the 2nd day they will know what place they are in. At the finish of the 3rd round, the top 7 spots will be Varsity and the following 8 through 15 or 16 will be JV. There will be NO Seniors playing on the JV team. The Athens Varsity Baseball Team will conduct tryouts on Monday, March 14 from 4:00-6:00 in the Aux Gym, Tues-day, March 15th varsity tryouts will be 2:45-4:30 - at 5 Star Sports & Training Center located at 312 Park Street in Troy. On Wednesday, March 16th the varsity baseball team will host their final day of tryouts in Aux Gym 4:00-6:00. There will be a $20 fee for the varsity tryouts to help cover the cost of the indoor facilities. If anyone has any questions about tryouts, they can contact Coach Morris at [email protected].

The Freshmen and JV teams will have tryouts March 14, 15 and 16 at Athens 2:45-4:45 pm in the Aux Gym and Main Gym.

Coach Kerry and Coach Jensen invite all interested student-athletes to try out for a spot in the RedHawk Softball program this upcoming spring! We are hosting open gyms in the Athens’ Aux Gym from 7-8:30 PM on the following evenings: February 23rd, February 28th, and March 9th. If you would like to come to the open gyms, all you need to bring is water, tennis shoes, and any softball equipment you have. These open gyms are a wonderful way to get to know both the coaching staff and your future teammates, as well as giving you the opportunity to sharpen your softball skills before our season begins in mid-March. Softball try outs will be held at Athens HS on Monday, March 14th, Tuesday, March 15th, and Wednesday, March 16th. The official times will be announced soon.
