22 Annual Report

24 Thank You

Dear Friends of O’Dea

Greetings from O’Dea High School, and welcome to our latest edition of the Irish Review. The opening of O’Dea this fall term was, for the first time in school history, held remotely with orientation and classes conducted through our eSchool platform. While we are each personally aware of the influences an international pandemic has introduced into our lives, I continue to be impressed and humbled by the many ways the O’Dea community has united to celebrate and advance our mission of Catholic education. Grounded in the founding vision of Blessed Edmund Rice, I believe you will also come to appreciate and recognize throughout this issue of the Irish Review, the ongoing pride in O’Dea’s remarkable legacy of pursuing excellence in all endeavors.

I am certain that throughout the following pages, you will appreciate and embrace the familiar while celebrating reimagined traditions continued in new and exciting ways. Collectively and without prompting, community members embraced these new opportunities, never compromising our rich legacy or our commitment to excellence embedded throughout the O’Dea Experience. As Principal, I am extraordinarily proud, but not surprised, of all that this amazing community continues to accomplish, in all the right ways, and for all the right reasons.

I appreciate that this opportunity was a direct result of earlier efforts to invest in a comprehensive technology platform, professional development opportunities, and relevant curricular instruction. Transforming our classrooms, investing in our 1:1 program, and ensuring our students and faculty embraced the value of incorporating technology into daily learning has proven to be essential. O’Dea will forever be Seattle’s first Microsoft Showcase School. While to an extent, symbolic, this recognition functions to validate the strategic investment of time and financial resources that serve our community so well today.

I look forward to the day in which we can once again gather together as a school community. A time when all students can return to campus to attend classes and rally in the gymnasium to enjoy an all-school assembly. The day when we can again proudly wear our white shirt and school tie and walk across the street to celebrate Mass together as a community centered in faith. We are at our best, our most spirited, and complete as a community when we are together. Until that time comes, I could not be more pleased with how we have responded together. Thank you each for your continued support of O’Dea. We should all be proud of what O’Dea continues to accomplish in support of our students and Catholic educational mission.

Continued Blessings, and Roll Irish,

Jim Walker Principal O’Dea High School

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

“ O’Dea makes me feel like I am a part of something bigger than myself. I know that it is going to challenge me academically and athletically and prepare me for college and my future.”

Spencer Burgess, Class of 2021

On March 12, 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic had begun to spread around Washington, Governor Inslee ordered a statewide school closure. O’Dea High School immediately shifted to a remote learning platform (eSchool). Using their Surface Tablets and Microsoft Teams, both students and teachers seamlessly continued classes the next day. Students were able to see and speak to their teachers and classmates every day and their synchronous education continued.

Students created new routines and adjusted to the eSchool schedule. Faculty found new ways to engage students in their subject areas. Student Support Groups were enhanced to help students who needed additional assistance. Sports teams continued their workouts virtually, and many senior events were modified to safely celebrate our students. While we know we are at our best when we are in person together, the adaptability of the community proved the brotherhood is resilient and our community inspiring.

THEOLOGY

For Jason Odem, the transition to remote learning was virtually seamless. His class content was already digital due to O’Dea’s emphasis on technology. This ensured his students were comfortable continuing to learn when we moved to eSchool. However, Mr. Odem particularly excelled in his approach to his students social-emotional growth. In addition to individual check-ins with his

students, Mr. Odem shifted his curriculum to spend time helping his students cope with the emergence of the pandemic. This included conversations about having faith in God while living in uncertain times and helping his students find personal ways to support their mental health and deal with anxieties. Thank you, Mr. Odem for providing a faith-filled environment for students at O’Dea as they worked through a difficult time.

BROTHERHOOD KNOWS NO DISTANCE

CHEMISTRY

While Vince Butorac never imagined he would be teaching chemistry remotely, eSchool brought a sense of structure, routine and normalcy to both his and his students lives during an uncertain and confusing global crisis. However, Mr. Butorac’s standard curriculum had to shift as hands-on lessons and activities with chemicals could not be done in person. As the semester progressed, Mr. Butorac found thoughtful ways to teach using chemistry in and around each student’s home. Students went into their yards to film everyday examples of chemical reactions, they created crystals in their homes, and they even made bath bombs for their mothers and grandmothers for Mother’s Day. These are all great examples of how faculty at O’Dea are being resourceful as they continue to engage their students in a remote environment.

STUDIO ART

As a class that seldom utilizes the Surface Tablet, shifting to eSchool presented a challenge for Studio Art. Students had been spending time drawing in sketchbooks and painting on canvas when Michelle Traverso and her students were faced with the abrupt switch to online learning. However, with creativity and a high level of care, Mrs. Traverso created each student an art kit including paint, brushes, and canvases so they could continue with hands on learning. If students were not able to pick up their supplies on campus, Mrs. Traverso delivered them herself. Mrs. Traverso used remote learning as an opportunity to grow as a teacher by being more deliberate and specific in giving direction, providing feedback, and demonstrating techniques. In addition, she created a wonderful opportunity for her students to work away from their screens and continue to delve into the world of art.

2020

THANK YOU, CLASS OF 2020

We are excited to honor the O’Dea Class of 2020 for their outstanding accomplishments and their dedication to O’Dea. They were celebrated in numerous ways including staff and faculty delivered yard signs, a special Senior Class Video, senior t-shirts, and the first-

ever O’Dea Drive-Thru Graduation. Congratulations to this very special group of young men who had an experience like no other senior class at O’Dea. We look forward to seeing them all again together at O’Dea as soon as possible. Brotherhood for Life!

SERVING THEIR COMMUNITIES

STUDENT ADVISORS FOR EQUITY (SAFE COUNCIL)

The Student Advisors for Equity Council is a group of student leaders dedicated to furthering racial equity and social justice in our school and the broader community. The SAFE Council has been hard at work over the summer. In July, the Council hosted a virtual meeting with O’Dea Alumni Board member, Chandler Gayton ‘09. Chandler connected with us on the importance of civic engagement and how we can use our power to influence our community. He also shared how important it is for our young men to get involved, follow their passion, and engage in their community. The SAFE Council hopes to have regular check-ins with Chandler to support the growth and leadership of our school community.

The SAFE Council also held meetings to discuss and make policy recommendations for the O’Dea Student Handbook to strengthen and create a more equitable school community. Thank you, gentleman, for your great and important work!

DIVERSITY AND EQUITY COMMITTEE

Formed in April, 2019, O’Dea’s Diversity and Equity Committee (DEC) is a team of faculty, staff, administrators, alumni, current parents & school board members. The DEC’s mission is to live out Catholic social teaching by making O’Dea High School a more equitable and inclusive community, where all are welcome, supported, and can thrive. In early 2020, DEC received a grant from the Fulcrum Foundation to continue our work with Equity Matters, a consulting group specializing in training, assessment, and consultation around racial equity and systemic change. Members of the DEC helped facilitate and lead a Summer Equity Work Program in which nearly all O’Dea faculty and staff actively engaged in dialogue and meetings based on selected books, podcasts and films to further their individual racial equity journey. The DEC will continue trainings and teach our school community ways to create positive, transformative, and lasting change.

Noah Ramsey ’23 volunteered at “Books for Prisoners,” a Seattle-based non-profit providing inmates with books to read. Prisoners request a book, which is then mailed to them, and all books and postage are donated by the community. Great work Noah!

AROUND O’DEA:

CHARACTER. FAITH. SERVICE.

VIRTUAL HOLY WEEK PRAYER SERVICE

Thank you to our school Chaplains for their great work during Holy Week! Although we were remote, the Chaplains led the school in Scripture readings, prayers for our community, and thoughtful reflection on the Lenten Season.

THEOLOGY NEWSLETTER

Thanks to Jason Odem, Theology Teacher, our theology department has been producing a weekly newsletter for our community to enjoy. “Anchored in Christ” features faith sharing from O’Dea faculty members, a saint of the week, snapshots of what is happening in theology classes, prayer and faith development resources, student work, and an ongoing reflection program from O’Dea faculty and staff. If you would like to read “Anchored in Christ,” check out the Campus Ministry page on the O’Dea website.

Gary King ’23 created care packages and paracord bracelets for Operation Gratitude, supplying care packages for first responders, healthcare workers, and military personnel. Thank you, Gary!

ALUMNI ON THE O’DEA HIGH SCHOOL BOARD

Operating a school like O’Dea requires a community of people who are invested in making us better. It takes a variety of skills and talents that support our ability to strategically plan, reach for a vision, and ensure the students at O’Dea High School receive the best Catholic education we are able to provide. We are fortunate to have a dedicated and enthusiastic volunteer School Board (see list on page 22), including several alumni who work tirelessly for their alma mater.

Alumni serving on our Board during the 2019 – 2020 school year include Michael Butler ‘78, Dennis Cook ‘74, Charlie Herche ‘05, Board Chair, and Andy Read ‘84, Board Vice Chair. They will be joined in the current school year by new alumni members Mike Siderius ‘84 and Roy Simperman Jr. ‘84. We appreciate these men for giving back to O’Dea and supporting the education of our current and future students.

BE A CLASS REPRESENTATIVE!

The O’Dea Alumni Board is always working on ways to engage their fellow alumni, and we are excited to begin enhancing connections with our Class Representatives. The goals of the Class Rep program are to help the Alumni Office stay in contact with fellow O’Dea alumni, help alumni stay in contact with the school, and ensure each graduating class has a voice in the community. Beginning next year we will host an annual meeting, in which Class Representatives will meet with each other and our Administrative Team, learn more about what is happening at O’Dea, and continue to build the bonds of brotherhood.

Alumni, we are looking for your help! If you would like to be more involved at O’Dea we need class reps for the following years:

SENIOR BROTHERHOOD RETREAT:

The Class of 2020 celebrated the annual Senior Brotherhood Retreat this past Spring. While the event was virtual, the excitement was still evident as Nate Burleson ’99 joined his classmate, David Mazzeo ’99, Alumni Director, in an interactive session with the students. Nate and David shared how being a part of the Brotherhood for Life impacted them, including the longtime friendships they still maintain. Senior students had the opportunity to ask Nate questions about his life and career, and Nate provided advice and words of wisdom for the young men. This was followed by a presentation by honorary O’Dea graduate, the Very Reverend Michael Ryan, who

encouraged the students to continue in their faith-based journey. Thank you, Nate and Fr. Ryan for spending time with the newest O’Dea alumni and your brothers.

ALUMNI SPEAKER PROGRAM

Thank you Brady Henderson ’04 for stopping by Will Chambers’ Sports Journalism class as a part of our new Alumni Speaker Program! Brady, a writer for the Seattle Seahawks and ESPN, spoke to the students on his experience working in professional sports and conducted an interactive question and answer. Thank you Brady, for spending time with our students!

Contact David Mazzeo, Alumni Director at [email protected] or 206.622.0722 if you are interested in being a Class Representative!

BROTHERHOOD FOR LIFE

12 13

While we wish this page were filled with the accomplishments of our spring athletic teams, COVID-19 caused an end to the spring season in Washington state just as it was getting started. However, it is still important to recognize our student-athletes and especially the young men of the Class of 2020 for their years of accomplishments and participation in the O’Dea athletic program.

Through athletics, our students learn about hard work, integrity, and honor. Last spring, and now through the fall, they are also learning about resiliency. We honor the ways they are persevering through the pandemic and resulting loss of past and current sports seasons. While athletics may not be taking place at O’Dea in the manner in which we are all accustomed, the concept of athletics is alive and well. We are grateful for our coaches and the work they are doing with their teams, including Paxton Paynter for providing our students with workouts they were able to do at home. Together we look forward to the time when we will all be competing in person, recognizing we will appreciate the experiences that much more.

METRO LEAGUE ALL SPORTS TROPHY

For the 34th time in school history, O’Dea was awarded the Metro League All Sports Trophy this past spring. This award recognizes the highest finishes in league competition in all high school sports. With the absence of the spring sports season, this year the award represented the success of the fall and winter sports seasons. Go Irish!

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS REWIND

What better way to spread Fighting Irish spirit than to relive some of the greatest moments in O’Dea Athletics history? Alumni, fans, and supporters of O’Dea were treated to numerous throwback football and basketball games this past summer by way of virtual “watch-parties” with Monte Kohler, Athletic Director, and David Mazzeo, Alumni Director. While we couldn’t be together in person, the technology enabled our community to watch games together in real-time, “chat” while they were watching, and relive games from the mid-90’s and early 2000’s. Thank you to all of you who joined us. We loved the opportunity to bring you together and spend time with you.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE 2020 WALL OF HONOR INDUCTEES!

This year, the Virtual Wall of Honor Inductee Celebration and Fundraiser benefited O’Dea High School’s Athletic Field Development Fund. While

O’Dea has operated without a field for almost 100 years, the increasing competition for existing field

space has caused us to begin exploring the possibility of our own field for our student-athletes. As we seek out opportunities, the time has come for us to invest

money in this process. This Fund will enable us to conduct research, create plans, and complete a

due diligence process to determine if there is land available that could meet the needs of our student-

athletes into the future.

CELEBRATE O’DEA:

A huge O’Dea THANK YOU to our community for joining us and helping make our first ever virtual event a success! Together, we raised almost $600,000 for financial aid to ensure all young men have the opportunity to receive an O’Dea education, regardless of their socio-economic status. What an incredible evening of generosity and spirit for the Fighting Irish. The sense of community shared by so many is what makes O’Dea great and this auction was no exception. Thank you to all families who donated auction items and volunteered on the committee, and to all those near and far who participated in bidding and spreading community spirit on social media. A special thank you to our auction co-chairs, Julie Prentice (Owen ’21) and Rhonda Banchero (Paolo ’21)!

ADVANCEMENT MAKE A GIFT FROM AN IRA OR

WITH STOCK:If you are 70 ½ years or older you are eligible

to make a qualified charitable distribution (QCD) directly to O’Dea from your IRA. While the CARES Act waives the required minimum distribution this year, you may still receive tax

savings by making a QCD.

Gifts of stock can also easily be made to O’Dea! Please contact Allie Thomas, Advancement

Director, at [email protected] or 206.923.7540 for more information.

SAFETY AND COMMUNICATIONS ENHANCEMENT PROJECT

This summer we completed several projects to improve and enhance the safety and communications systems at O’Dea High School. New cameras are providing greater coverage throughout the campus, making it safer for all. A new bell and paging system, phone system, and door locks are replacing obsolete systems and providing improved internal communications and greater functionality. And finally, an overall communication system will enable all of these systems to communicate with each other resulting in greater efficiency. This system will also ensure that in an emergency, we can reach 100% of our students, families, and faculty immediately and seamlessly through a variety of means. Thank you to the Simperman-Corette Foundation and an anonymous alumni parent of two graduates for their gifts to fund this vital project for O’Dea!

“ O’Dea provided me with the building blocks to pursue my many achievements including my US Air Force time during the Vietnam war, NSA, Federal Law Enforcement, church activities and raising my family for over 47 years. As a member of the class of 1957 I have continued to keep in touch with many of my former classmates.”

- James Collins ‘57

” O’Dea provided me an excellent foundation for my future education and development overall. I continue to give to O’Dea because I know that costs are always increasing and you are helping students in some cases who don’t have the means to get a strong High School education. I want to give back for what I was helped to achieve.”

- Steven Hucik ‘69

“ Quite simply, I donate to make it possible for others to reap the same rewards I have enjoyed, partially due to the life education I received at O’Dea.”

- Paul Holder ‘65

30+ YEAR DONORSThank you to these alumni who have made a donation every year to support the young men of O’Dea for over 30 years! We asked them to share why they continue to give to O’Dea.

ANNUAL REPORT 2019-2020

FINANCIAL STATEMENTS AS OF JUNE 30, 2020Dear O’Dea Community,

In difficult times, we all need family and community to pull us up. This year, we remain grateful to you, the O’Dea community, for your love, support, and encouragement that has enabled us to be the best we could be in uncertain times. Together, we will ensure our mission remains strong.

When I think back to O’Dea as we were five years ago, our “technology” at that time included overhead projectors and an assortment of other similar equipment. We knew our faculty and the connections they made with our students were the most important aspect of an O’Dea education. But we also recognized we needed to envision a future that included robust technology to ensure our students were prepared for the future.

We developed our technology plan, and in a relatively short time were named Seattle’s first Microsoft Showcase School in recognition of excellence in transforming our students’ learning. However, what especially stands out for me still, is your outpouring of support for the plan. Over the last several years, we renovated classrooms and converted our library to a Student Resource Center, and you stood beside us all the way. We simply could not have done it without you.

And because of you, our faculty and students had the technology they needed this past March when we transitioned to remote learning. While a global pandemic wasn’t part of our plan, your support ensured we were prepared for one, and we can’t thank you enough.

As we approach our 100-year anniversary in 2023, we continue to plan for the future. We are currently raising money for our new Athletic Field Development Fund. We invite you to invest in this discovery process as we research opportunities for an O’Dea owned field, an important investment in our future student-athletes. At the same time, we continue to invest in all areas of our 2019 – 2024 Strategic Plan to ensure O’Dea High School remains at the forefront of Catholic education for its next 100 years.

Thank you for all you do for the current and future students of O’Dea. You truly make us better.

Sincerely,

Laura Weinand Chief Financial Officer
