Already we are experiencing a very busy term and about to get even busier with all the sports events on our school planner. As I walk around the school and visit classrooms I am impressed with the way students and staff are displaying the positive behaviour for learning PBL by following CREW values. We live in an ever changing world and I believe that schools need to prepare each child to cope with these changes. At Cleve AS we want each child to be a positive, responsible, successful member of the community. This involves the development of academic, social, emotional, spiritual and tolerance skills. We are always looking for ways to improve our service to each child. One important part of the development is our connection and partnership with you the parents of our students. We will keep working to improve our communication structures. One change we have introduced this year is the new mobile phone policy. So far things seem to be working according to our plan. We have had a few students who are still coming to terms with not having their phones with them throughout the day, however most are getting on with their work in a positive way. We are even observing more students playing games during the breaks. I look forward to hearing from you with any constructive ideas. By now many of you would have heard that Natasha Agars has won a new role as Area PRT and thus will not be our Deputy Principal for 2020. I take this opportunity to thank Natasha for all the hard work over the past years as Coordinator and Deputy and also wish her all the best in her new role. I am delighted to announce that Trevor McDonough, our current Wellbeing Coordinator has won the DP role for 2020. I congratulate Trevor and look forward to working with Trevor in his new role. Our CREW values of: Care, Respect, Enthusiasm for learning and Working together are helping us to prepare our students for the future. Please continue to talk to your children and us, about ways that we can further enhance the skills we as a community want to see in our students. The Annual General Meeting of the School Governing Council will be held in March so please think about your involvement in decision making and governance of our school. If you would like any further information about the School Governing Council please contact the Chairperson Deb Taheny or myself at the school. The first meeting for this year will be held next Monday 17th Feb. in the staffroom at 5.30pm, if you are not on the School Governing Council and would like to attend please contact us at the school. Parents can attend as observers. If you have an agenda item please contact Deb Taheny. We value your involvement in our school and your child’s education. Music tuition will continue this year. John Murray & Bronwyn Smith, will provide tuition to the students they started with last year. Both have a few spaces so if you are interested in having your child learn Guitar, Ukulele, Bass or Drums, please contact the school. Bronwyn will also continue to offer, Keyboards, Flute, Voice and Theory. Anna Davidson, from Kimba will offer Brass and Woodwind tuition. Please contact us to gain more information or put your child’s name forward for tuition. The Year 12 results from last year were very pleasing. We had all but one student complete their SACE and all the students who applied for an ATAR were successful in getting their first or second choice at University. I congratulate all the students on their achievements and thank the staff for the hard work, dedication and support given to each student, especially leading up to the end of last year. On behalf of the school community I wish all of last year’s Year 12 students all the best for their future and thank them for choosing Cleve Area School to complete their secondary education. As a staff, at Cleve Area School:

We want all students to display a positive attitude towards learning and school life;

We expect all students to attend every lesson so they have a chance to succeed;

We encourage all students to achieve their best; and

We are all accountable to each other and to our community.

I truly believe that Cleve Area School is a great place to learn, work and play. I invite you all to join us in a partnership to provide the best for our children. Ray Marino.

Senior Student Information

Open Afternoon

Cleve Area School throws open its doors to families on Thursday, Week 3, from 2pm until 3pm for senior school students. Come check out the school’s facilities, enjoy a cuppa in the Year 12 room, see your students in action and meet their teachers. Mental Health and Wellbeing

Year 11 and 12 are big years for your student. School counsellors Trevor McDonough and Jo Turner are available to support both your student and your family. Pastoral support worker Deb Taheny is at the school Tuesdays and Thursdays for support. Students can also contact services outside the school for support such as HeadSpace at headspace.org.au or LifeLine by phoning 131114. Personal Device Ban

The school’s Phone and Personal Device ban is now in effect. Please encourage your child to submit their devices in Home Group to avoid having them confiscated for your collection from the Front Office.

The Rules of Work and School

Another polite reminder that it is illegal for students to be paid during school hours and that both employers and families risk fines if a child is absent from school, for paid work. The school promotes a range of approved programs including Work Experience, School-Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships, Workplace Practices and Community Studies, which all facilitate students connecting with industry. We encourage you to explore these options with the school to avoid consequences with the Department for Education and Department of Industry and Skills.

Deadlines and Reporting

SACE deadlines are very strict. As a result, your student will have access to a variety of tools and support to help them stay on track. Teachers will provide a schedule of deadlines to students. Deadlines will be clearly advertised, and teachers will program for drafting and feedback. In addition to term reports, you will receive regular ‘traffic light’ emails alerting you to whether your student is on track (green), at risk (yellow), or not meeting requirements (red). Senior student who receive a red traffic light will lose certain privileges. Notes and Permissions

We are still waiting on many families to return permission slips sent home with students in Week 1. These include permission to drive with passengers or ride in other peoples’ cars, home study forms and the general permissions package in readiness for Swimming Carnival. Students who wish to leave the school at lunchtimes will need a new signed letter from parents/caregivers for 2020. Subject Information and Teachers

In the case of an emergency, or for more information about your child’s course, please contact your student’s teacher. SACE concerns or queries can be directed to Seonie Robst at [email protected] Alternatively, another great resource is the SACE home page www.sace.sa.edu.au Exams

Please be aware that Year 11 and 12 students will have exams at the end of Term 2 and Term 4. Non-attendance will have serious consequences for their academic success. Upcoming Events

Swimming Carnival

The Year 4-12 Swimming Carnival is on Friday of next week, 21st February. Last year’s competition was unbelievably close with the last race deciding the final placings for the top three positions. Cooranga House ended up in front by just 2 points over Kahibah and 4 points in front of Nurrugy to take home the shield for the fourth year in a row. Cooranga House were also great at practices and out of the pool taking home the Swimming Carnival Team Spirit Award! The Team Spirit Award shield is awarded throughout the year at each house sporting competition. Students are judged on how well they participate, cheer and support their team. Students are encouraged to dress up in their team colours at the carnival and come up with chants/war cries. However, a standard of dress suitable for attendance at a school function and swimming is required and because of the effect on chemical levels, students are asked not to put dyes in hair and to ensure any ‘body paint’ applied is safe. Students will meet at the poll at 8.50 a.m. for Home Group whilst competition commences at 9.05 a.m. and concludes in time for the usual departure of buses. There will be a lunch break from approximately 12.30pm - 1.00pm. Catering will be provided at the pool on the day with final details regarding menus and prices promoted over the next week. Programmes will be available to interested parents from next Wednesday at the front office or on the day.

The Swimming Carnival is a normal school day and all students are expected to attend. We hope you are able to support the occasion by attending for at least part of the day. For many years now we’ve had a great number of spectators which has created an exciting atmosphere for the students. To help clarify queries about the Swimming Carnival the following is an outline of how the day is organised. The carnival is split into the following: Individual Championship Events

Races designed to cater for 'stronger' swimmers with one competitor from each house in each race swimming: Freestyle, Breast Stroke, Butterfly (Inter and Senior only) and Backstroke.

All races are 34m (2laps) Individual Medley (Backstroke, Breaststroke, Freestyle)

Sub Junior and Junior are 17m (1 lap) each leg

Inter and Senior is 34m (2 laps) each leg.

Age Events

Races designed for all competitors regardless of their swimming ability. An unlimited number of competitors are able to compete in heats at the start of the day. The fastest four swimmers in each stroke, in each age group, regardless of house, go through to a final. All races are 17m (1 lap) - all age groups do Breast Stroke, Backstroke and Freestyle. Team Novelty Events

Races designed first and foremost to encourage non-swimmers and beginner swimmers to 'have a go'. - Ring Relay - mixed teams for sub junior and junior - Tube Relay - mixed teams for sub junior, junior, intermediate and senior - Peg Scramble - mixed teams for sub junior, junior and intermediate - Ball Dribble - mixed teams for intermediate and senior - Chariot Race - mixed sub junior and senior combined. Relays

Team Freestyle and Medley relays with teams of four competitors from each house. - Sub junior and junior legs are 17m, intermediate and senior are 34m House meetings will be held next Tuesday to enable Leaders to finalise teams. Every effort is made by House Captains, Vice Captains and supervising teachers to ensure all students are able to participate in at least three events. Hopefully an individual’s events will be spread out throughout the day but this isn’t always possi-ble. Primary students will record their events in diaries after House Meetings. Graeme Byrnes, PE Teacher

Helpers Wanted!

Helpers are needed for both Swimming Carnival and the upcoming Sports Day in week 7. Nat Roberts will be approaching people to help at Swimming Carnival over the next week and then we try and get as many helpers as we can at the Swimming Carnival for the Sports Day roster. If you won’t be at Swimming Carnival but are available to help at Sports Day please leave a message for me at school. If you are unsure of what is required or would like to find out more about jobs to be filled please don’t hesitate to contact me at school. Graeme Byrnes

Interstate Sport Nominations

If you would like to find out the due dates for Interstate Sporting Competitions and the nomination process for each sport then visit the School Sport SA website. For most competitions students are required to ‘self-nominate’! If you require any assistance please contact me at school. Graeme Byrnes
