Preface

The Seventh International Conference of Demotic Studies took place 23-27 August, 1999, at the University of Copenhagen. The conference marked the successful conclusion of the ten year project that began in 1989 with the purpose of advancing the study and publication of the Carlsberg Papyri (see The Carlsberg Papyri III, p. vii) .

Twenty-six of the original 37 papers read at the conference are found in the present volume. An additional paper, originally scheduled for the conference, is also included.

It remains for me to thank the institutions and people who in various ways made the conference possible. Above all the financial support of the Carlsberg Foundation is gratefully acknowledged. The Carl sb erg Foundation not only supported the conference and the publication of the present volume, but brought Demotie studies to Denmark through the purchase of the first Carlsberg Papyri in 1931. It is also a pleasure for me to thank the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek and the Collection of Classical and Near Eastern Antiquities at the National Museum whose hospitality we enjoyed. Thanks are further due to the many students of the Carsten Niebuhr Institute of Near Eastern Studies who helped with various practieal matters. Last but not least 1 would like to record a special gratitude towards Paul John Frandsen with whom 1 organized the conference. His unselfish efforts over many years played a key role in reviving Demotie studies in Copenhagen and in initiating the current extensive international programme for the publication of the Carlsberg Papyri.
