A MEMorable evening lies in store for jazz fans
on this night! MEM3 brings a worldly outlook to
Edmonton, along with recent kudos as one of
the best piano trios on the jazz scene today.
Based in New York City, the members of this
trio are Michael Cabe on piano from Seattle,
Washington, Mark Lau on bass from Sydney,
Australia and Ernesto Cervini on drums from
Toronto, Canada. Ernesto last played the
Yardbird Suite in a quartet setting in November
2009, as part of the third annual Yardbird Jazz
Festival.
According to the band’s website, MEM3
represents “the culmination of four years of
close musical and personal friendship between
these three musicians.”
This night will feature works from their debut
album Pennsylvania Grey, which includes
original compositions from all three musicians.
The group’s sound is partly influenced by the
trio sounds of the great Oscar Peterson, Peter
Erskine and the Esbjörn Svensson Trio (E.S.T.).
All three players have successful careers in their
own right, performing at jazz festivals such as
the Umbria Jazz Festival in Italy, the Pori Jazz
Festival in Finland and others in Canada, the
United States, Australia and Hong Kong. They
have also performed in many of the great jazz
venues in the world as well as many of the best
in New York City, including Birdland, Dizzy’s
Club, Jazz at Lincoln Center, The 55 Bar and The
Jazz Standard.
Pennsylvania Grey contains nine intriguing
original compositions, along with a swinging
rendition of the traditional “Abide With Me”...
Dynamic chemistry...An expansive palette of
sounds, from modal to melancholy...Cervini’s
nimble cymbal and brushwork...these musicians
are clearly inspired and willing to investigate all
aspects of the piano jazz spectrum.

4 May/June 2010
With the arrival of May, it’s time to celebrate the
all-too-short summer months in Edmonton. On
this night, Hellbent will lead the way, with some
scorching “hellbent” jazz!
Hellbent features New York-based saxophonist/
composer Michael Blake, a man with an
impressive discography and a very active player
on the New York scene for more than twenty
years. His jazz roots, though, are in Canada; he
was born in Montreal, raised in Vancouver and
studied jazz at the Banff Centre.
On this night, Michael will step into the Yardbird
leading a great group of fiery musicians: fellow
Lounge Lizards alumni and drummer Calvin
Weston, the tuba virtuoso Marcus Rojas and the
innovative Charlie Burnham on violin.
The band’s influences include The Lounge
Lizards, Art Ensemble of Chicago, Sex Mob and
Yusef Lateef. Here are some further musical
insights from Hellbent’s official bio:
Hellbent began performing in New York City
(NYC) in 2006. They debuted at Brooklyn’s
Barbes as a trio, with Calvin Weston on drums

and Marcus Rojas on tuba. This unusual
instrumentation was expanded on with the
addition of Charlie Burnham on violin. Weston
and Burnham are among the most respected
musicians in their field of “free funk” jazz. Rojas
is considered by many to be the greatest
improviser on the tuba today.
Blake sees the combination of brass and fiddle
as an opportunity to compose his brand of
lyrical yet percussive-driven music. The blues,
intensely fast tempos and free “blowing” all play
a big part in the construction of their repertoire,
but the music is accessible to young and old
alike.

Join one of Edmonton’s finest pianists, Andrew
Glover, in the company of some of Edmonton’s
best jazz players for an evening which features
some of Andrew’s highly original compositions.
Andrew’s compositions and arrangements
have been performed or recorded by John
Abercrombie, Anna Beaumont, Caroline Mae
Johnson, Jacek Kochan, Pat LaBarbera, Theresa
Lightfoot, George McFetridge, Don Thompson,
Jean-Pierre Zanella, and Alfie Zappacosta.
Six of the eleven compositions on Jack Semple’s
Grey and Yellow CD were written by Andrew, as
well as four songs for Dianne Donovan’s release
Yes or No. He was also a principal writer for the
Edmonton band Pazzport.
Andrew has recorded several of his own albums,
including the well-received Smooth (2007) and
Forward Motion (2005). In 2004, Andrew won the
Jazz City Commission project to compose one
hour of jazz music commemorating 25 years of
jazz festivals in Edmonton. In 2003, he toured
with Canadian jazz guitarist Jake Langley.
Andrew graduated from Grant MacEwan
Community College (now MacEwan University),
and studied solo piano with Adrian Chornowol
and Charlie Austin. Andrew has also worked
with Mike Rud, Kennedy Jensen, the Edmonton
Symphony Orchestra, Scott Hamilton and
Sheena Easton, among others. For over ten
years he toured extensively with the Big Miller
Band.

John Stetch TrioA piano master and an innovator, John Stetch
is one of “Edmonton’s own” jazz greats. Among
many great performances he has given in
Edmonton, many will remember his wonderful
solo performance at the Yardbird during the
Juno Awards festivities in 2004. John has
released 10 CDs of mostly original compositons,
and has earned five Juno nominations.
He has won accolades at all stages of his career.
Here’s just one example:
“Canadian John Stetch is one of the most brilliant
and underrated jazz pianists working today. In
a perfect world he would be more famous than
Wynton Marsalis.” - Alain Druot, Clavier
Stetch has been living in New York for many
years and has performed around the world at
some of the most prestigious jazz venues. John’s
connections to Edmonton and the Yardbird are
strong. He started his jazz journey by exploring
his father’s inspiring jazz records and books. At
age 19, John enrolled at Grant MacEwan College
(now MacEwan University) to study piano with
Charlie Austin and Wayne Feschuk. He later
graduated from McGill University and started
touring and recording across Canada. Since
moving to New York, he has worked with Rufus
Reid, Charlie Haden, Seamus Blake, Mark Turner,
Jeff Ballard, Jorge Rossy, Victor Lewis, Billy Hart
and many others.
Stetch’s latest recording TV Trio explores a more
recent chapter of the Great American Songbook;
television themes of the 70s and 80s. The album
stayed in the Top 20 for almost two months on
the U.S.A. JazzWeek radio chart.
He will be joined for this concert by bassist,
composer, author and educator Mike Downes
and drummer Joel Haynes, two of Toronto’s
finest musicians
On this visit to the Yardbird, John’s trio will be
sure to draw a full house. Arrive early and get
ready for a great night of masterful piano and
musicality!

Joey DeFrancesco Trio
International Jazz Series
Do you love the sound of the Hammond B-3
organ? Long-time fans of the B-3 sound and
“newbies” to the sound will hear a great night
of Hammond organ from one of the true B-3
masters, Joey DeFrancesco.
Joey is a well-recognized as an important force
in the revival of the Hammond B-3 organ as a
jazz instrument. According to Steve Huey of
allmusic.com, his music “runs the gamut from
soul-jazz and bluesy grooves à la Jimmy Smith
to hard bop to the more advanced modal style
of Coltrane disciple Larry Young.”
Considered by many to be the greatest jazz
organist on the planet, DeFrancesco has
topped the organist category in both the
Downbeat Critics’ and Readers’ Polls for many
years.
Following in the footsteps of his father, Papa
John DeFrancesco, Joey’s career started in his
teenage years as a finalist in the Thelonious
Monk International Jazz Piano Competition
followed by touring with Miles Davis’ band
after his high-school graduation in 1988. He
also spent some time working with guitarist
John McLaughlin in the 1990s.
He has recorded steadily since 1989 on a
variety of labels as a leader including a couple
of CDs with the late Jimmy Smith as well as
tributes to other great organists like Don
Patterson. His most recent disc is a tribute to
the music of Horace Silver.
For this special weekend gig at the Yardbird
Suite, Joey is bringing his long-time colleagues,
guitarist Paul Bollenback and drummer Byron
Landham. Bollenback is also known for his
work with Gary Bartz and Steve Gadd while
Landham has been featured with Shirley Scott,
Lee Ritenour and Houston Person.

This night brings two groups together for what
is sure to be an innovative and colourful evening.
The featured act will be trumpeter Bob Tildesley
and his Indigenous Aliens.
This top-notch ensemble includes several of
Edmonton’s leaders in the jazz community.
Following Bob’s creative lead, this group takes an
improvisational approach to an eclectic range
of mostly original compositions, creating bold
and rich soundscapes that blend organic and
electronic music. You can expect surprises, and
a consistent high-quality performance from this
“extraterrestrial” grouping.
An expressive soloist, particularly skilled with
mutes, Bob has been in regular demand as a
studio player over the years and has appeared on
dozens of top-drawer albums by such Alberta jazz
greats as Kent Sangster, Brian Buchanan, Rubim
de Toledo, Dave Babcock, Chris Andrew, Andrew
Glover and Mo Lefever, to name a few.
Ask any serious jazz musician on the scene, and
they will confirm Bob is as adept at playing bebop
as he is at handling blues and swing; plus, he’s
equally at home in post-bop, post-modern and
“free” situations.
Bob first came to national prominence through his
work in the late 1970s with pianists Tommy Banks
and Bill Emes, and saxophonists Bill Jamieson and
P.J. Perry. Bob played in R&B bands while growing
up in Calgary, then moved to Edmonton at age
20, where he soon emerged as the city’s leading
jazz trumpeter. He’s been a mainstay and first
calltrumpeter ever since, building up a resume and
body of work that places him in the upper echelon
of Canadian jazz trumpeters.

Indigenous Aliens and Mo Lefever Trio
Mo Lefever is an Edmonton-based guitarist with
a strong following among her musical peers and
audiences. She is recognized for her versatility
and a sound that can only be partly classified as
an “eclectic jazz/funk/groove blend,” which can be
heard on her CD Unposed.
Mo Lefever was originally inspired to explore the
jazz genre when the venerable Tommy Banks paid
a visit to her high school in Medicine Hat. Once
pointed in jazz directions, there was no turning
back. Mo’s early influences ranged from Jimi
Hendrix to Chet Atkins.
After high school, Mo continued her musical
training at MacEwan College (now MacEwan
University). She lists the following artists as
inspirations: Joe Zawinul, Weather Report, Roland
Kirk, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Pat Metheny, Stevie
Wonder, Prince, David Fiuczynski, the Screaming
Headless Torsos (yes, this is really a band), and the
always evolving Medeski, Martin and Wood.
After leaving MacEwan, Mo reports that her initial
fame and glory came in the form of the disco
cover band Godiva. It was during this time that Mo
acquired her most valued possession: the Digitech
Space Station. They have rarely been separated
since.
Mo has toured in rock bands, disco bands and
played with a variety of jazz heavies as they pass
through Edmonton. She is currently a part of
several progressive jazz projects including Don
Bradshaw’s Big Idea, Hecubus and of course the
(cleverly titled) Mo Lefever trio/quartet/quintet/
or group, as the case may be. She is also a long-
standing member of Brett Miles’ Magilla Funk
Conduit and Bob Tildesley’s Indigenous Aliens.

Elizabeth Shepherd is a fresh, distinctive, jazz
voice and one of Canada’s most promising jazz
talents, and she has the widespread critical
acclaim to prove it. Shepherd’s debut Start to
Move (2006) and the follow-up Parkdale (2008)
were both nominated for JUNOs and were
described as “pushing the boundaries of jazz.”
Elizabeth brings her trio to the Yardbird as part
of an extensive tour, with several Canadian
stops. Expect this show to feature past works
and fresh music from her well-received third
album Heavy Falls the Night.
Elizabeth’s rhythmically intricate, groove-
oriented tunes, sincere lyrics and distinct, soulful
voice have earned her fans from across Canada,
and as far as New York, London and Tokyo.
Elizabeth’s bio states: “… she pushes the
boundaries of what is considered conventional
jazz, all the while creating a sound completely
her own. As far as being a ‘jazz performer,’
Elizabeth does not count herself as one to be
defined by a particular genre; her music comes
straight from the soul, and is more than just
what she does, but what she loves.”
Elizabeth completed a degree in music from
McGill University before moving to Toronto
and experiencing success on Toronto’s soul jazz
scene with her trio. Their local success led to the
recording of Start to Move, and a subsequent
performance on BBC Radio 1, sold out shows at
London’s Jazz Café, and a week-long stint at the
prestigious Cotton Club in Tokyo. Start To Move
continues to receive critical acclaim, and was
voted one of the Top 3 Jazz Albums of the Year
by the listeners of the Gilles Peterson show on
BBC Radio 1 UK in 2006.

Tunnel Six is a sextet comprised of some of the
most notable up-and-coming jazz musicians
from the U.S. Pacific Northwest and from
Eastern Canada.
The group was formed when its members were
attending the International Workshop in Jazz
and Creative Music at the Banff Centre for the
Arts. As noted on the band’s website, the group
says there was a “strong musical chemistry”
which was immediately evident from the first
notes they played together.
Tunnel Six plays original compositions by all the
band members and hope to connect to their
audiences “through the strong and intuitive
storytelling elements of their improvisations.”
They are currently on an extensive tour of
Canada, the mid-west U.S., and the Pacific
Northwest, which will culminate in the
recording of their debut full-length album in
Portland, Oregon.

Gear up for some real, earthy blues on this special
blues night at the Yardbird!
Eddie Vaan Shaw is a brilliant guitarist who has been
performing since age 11. He grew up in Chicago
in the blues community and was influenced by

and Hound Dog Taylor, to name only a few.
Eddie’s guitar style is clean, and lightning fast.
With an unparalleled command of his instrument,
Eddie’s live performances are in the blues tradition,
with some great slide guitar, intense solos and
rock solid blues rhythms. He has been recognized
by Guitar Player and Downbeat magazines for his
excellence.
Eddie performs regularly in Chicago blues clubs
and frequently appears at the Chicago Blues
Festival, and other major U.S., Canadian and
overseas festivals. His recordings include Morning
Rain (Wolf, 1998), and Trail of Tears (Wolf, 2004),

Box CutterReady for a jazz adventure? Gordon Grdina’s Box
Cutter will lead the way, cutting through stylistic
boundaries. Gordon Grdina is a respected
Vancouver-based guitarist and the brainchild
behind Box Cutter.
With this fascinating group of musicians,
the players weave in and out of free-form
improvisations, grooves, and lyrical melodic
statements. This is a band that loves to improvise.
You can expect to hear: “…textural soundscapes
that wash into polyrhythmic grooves, soulful
ballads that climax into washes of sound, spacious
vignettes that teeter on the edge of tonality, and
songs filled with unexpected harmonic twists
and turns.”
Fans of straight ahead jazz will find lots of
structure, logic and direction in Box Cutter’s music.
Avant garde lovers will find enough ingenuity
and surprise in the group’s free improvisations;
even fans of experimental rock music will find
enough groove and variety to stay tuned.
Guitarist Gordon Grdina has performed at the
Yardbird Suite a couple of times to great acclaim
with his trio which also features drummer Kenton
Loewen. Loewen and bassist Karlis Silins are both
well-established members of the Vancouver
musical community.
One of the most highly-regarded clarinetists in
jazz, Francois Houle’s playing reflects his ongoing
interest in jazz experimentalism, contemporary
classical vocabularies and instrumental extended
techniques. He has worked with Marilyn Crispell,
Evan Parker, Georg Graewe, Dave Douglas, Myra
Melford, Mark Dresser, Joelle Leandre and Tony
Wilson. His recordings have received enthusiastic
reviews from the international press and have
been nominated for Juno Awards and Pacific
