November: Respect – a feeling of admiring someone or something that is good, valuable, important, etc.

December: Motivated - to give (someone) a reason for doing

something

The mission of Genesee Valley Central School is “to create a culture that

fosters continuous learning, growth and value of the individual so that our

students can be productive in the 21st Century.” Faculty, staff and adminis-

tration work daily to carry out our mission. What does this mean? How do

we create a culture that fosters continuous learning and growth? How do we

demonstrate the value of the individual so students may be productive in the

21st Century? On opening day, I encouraged faculty, staff and administration to develop

a “Culture of Failure”. The goal is to create a culture and environment where

students and staff are comfortable to try new things, to be innovative and to

fail. Experience breeds innovation. It is my belief that we learn more from

failure than from success. I believe we have to model innovative practices to

ensure that students are prepared to solve 21st Century problems. The people of Genesee Valley care deeply for our students. We recognize

that it is a privilege to prepare today’s children to be tomorrow’s leaders. We

will continue to foster a culture of continuous learning and growth and invite

you to share any expertise that will support us in this great endeavor.

Sincerely,

Brian Schmitt, Ed. D.Superintendent

The American Association of School Librarians (AASL), a division of the American Library Association, published an article in its October digital edition fea-turing the efforts of Dalton Baker, Riley Gordon, Keegan McKnight and William Scholes.

In the Spring of 2014, AASL sent notice to school librarians asking for stories in which parents, students or groups advocated for a school library program. Mrs. Fuoco submitted information about the students’ approach to wanting time to visit the library and “research topics” of personal interest. The boys were instrumental in gathering signatures from their classmates and petitioning to have library reinstated for 5th grade students. Mr. Edmister supported their efforts by allowing the boys to take responsibility for meeting with their classroom teachers and Mrs. Fuoco to schedule visits to the library. This year, Mrs. Fuoco is thrilled to have 5th grade students for library class!

As the school librarian at GVCS, Mrs. Fuoco is quite proud of the boys’ efforts. “They were thoughtful in their approach to finding a solution to an issue that con-cerned them. Not only was this experience a valuable part of their education, it also reinforces the social skills needed when confronting others with a problem.”

The Genesee Valley Central School District is currently in its’ third year of the administration of the i-Ready Diagnostic Assessment. Teachers, parents, administra-tors and students have all become familiar with the reports that provide useful infor-mation that helps inform instruction in the classroom. Below are some common ques-tions we receive, along with answers!

Why is the district using this assess-ment tool? The Genesee Valley Central School District was in need of a diagnostic tool to help teachers and administrators make informed decisions about students and monitor their progress in reading and math. This assessment tool was chosen as it measures both reading and math, is aligned to the Common Core Standards, is very user friendly and provides many types of reports.

How often do students take this assess-ment? Grades K-9 students at Genesee Valley take the full benchmark three times a year: fall, winter and spring. All students K-6 also take monthly short quizzes that are designed to track progress.

How long do the assessments take? This varies by grade level and student; the aver-age is about 40 minutes. Monthly quizzes are much shorter: 15 minutes.

What do the assessments measure? The reading assessment measures 6

separate foundational skills:1. phonological awareness (sounds)2. phonics (sounds and letters)

high frequency or sight words3. vocabulary4. comprehension of literature 5. comprehension of informational textThe math assessment measures four key

foundation areas:1. number and operations2. algebra and algebraic thinking3. geometry4. measurement and data

How do I know how my child did on the assessment? Parents should contact their child’s classroom teacher; parent reports are easily printed and can be sent or mailed home.

What if I have more questions? Teach-ers, principals and I are always ready to help parents with questions! Feel free to contact any one of us for more information on i-Ready Diagnostic and i-Ready reports.

Fitness Activities Available at GVCS

Genesee Valley Central School4

1. Keep coat, gloves, hat and boots in your vehicle in case it gets stuck or dis-abled. Walking in sub-zero temperatures and snow with flip flops is not COOL!

2. Keep a snow brush/scraper in your car. Always clear all snow off ALL of your windows, headlights & taillights. Do not be a peep-hole driver.

3. Never let your gas tank get near empty as the fuel lines can freeze more easily and your vehicle idles more often.

4. Check your tire pressure and look at your tires often to see if they look low.

5. Check your route ahead of time when driving to or in an unfamiliar area.

6. If you lose traction do not stomp on the brakes, calmly let off the gas and coast while trying to steer back into your lane.

7. Slow down, your braking distance is dramatically longer on winter roads. Speed kills!

8. Keep your cell phone charged, it will come in handy when you need help.

9. Slow down when entering an inter-section. You may be able to stop, but the other drivers may not. Drive defensively.

10. Be aware of road conditions and temperatures (36 to 28 degrees are the most dangerous) as conditions can change instantly or within a few yards. Black ice is a serious threat. If severe conditions are forecasted, go later or another day.

11. Look at your vehicle now, ask your parents for help addressing any issues.

12. PLAN AHEAD, do not rush, and start your car a few minutes prior to leav-ing the house or school. Set that alarm 10 minutes earlier and get ready sooner! By Mr. Edmister,

PK-6 Principal Our early childhood team of

representatives from Head Start, PK, Kindergarten, and 1st Grades attended a presentation of innova-tive ideas by Lisa Murphy, other-wise known as the Ooey Gooey Lady. She taught us many new ideas of how to integrate Science, Math, Music and more into our curriculum!

The most important message that Ms. Murphy taught us was “Learn to control the environment and you will never have to control the child.” As a parent, this message resonated deeply with me. I truly believe that we have to allow our children to experience the world and make choices (both good and bad), while still putting parameters on those chances. Our teachers discussed how we can give our students choices but still control the learning. It was a great chance to better understand how success is achieved!

In Science, Ms. Mon-tague’s fourth graders took part in a team building exercise that focused on the importance of collaborating and working with others in a positive way. Their chal-lenge was to build a marsh-mallow tower with only 20 pieces of spaghetti, 1 marshmallow (which had to end up on top), and 1 yard of tape. They had 15 min-utes. That was the only in-struction they received and she made herself “invisible” to questions so they had to problem solve together. It was fun to watch! The three groups were successful in building their towers.

In the end, each group had to tell everyone where they felt they were success-ful and what they could do better next time (even if they built a tower success-fully).

By Mr. LeBaron, 7-12 Principal The Homecoming King/Queen picture is a perfect representa-

tion of our fantastic Homecoming Weekend. The students in the picture, Tyler Zlomek and Haley Burton, the King and Queen, depict style, class, grace, and pride and those adjectives describe all of our students, all day, at all games, and at the dance. This also serves us as an important reminder.

We talk a lot about pride at GVCS. We use the word pride as part of our school motto every day that reads, “Take Pride in Yourself, Pride in Your School, and Have an Honorable Day.” I send this motto to you as parents and ask that you read it carefully. We ask kids to be sportsmanlike at all times, through the good and the bad, through their losses and defeats, and when they sit the bench. We ask them to represent their school when they wear their green, black and white, and act like leaders on and off the field, even in the face of adversity or poor officiating. We ask them to do things as young adults that we expect from all of our students, in school, on the bus, on a field trip, walking the halls, cafeteria and in our locker rooms. If that is the expectation, isn’t this expected from parents, friends of our athletes, on-lookers, coaches, teachers, any adult who watches a game?

I humbly ask that as patrons of the community, you come to all events and support all our students in any venue; music, art, athletics, community events, award ceremonies etc., and you enter our campus with our school motto in mind: “Take Pride in Yourself, Pride in Your School, and Have an Honorable Day!” We will always welcome you as fans and as parents, with open arms and an open door, but please consider the importance of be-ing a parent and the impact you have on our kids at events. Let’s lead by example, let’s be leaders to our athletes, and let’s keep the pride alive! Go Jags!

The GVCS PTO is hosting its 2nd annual Fall Festival on Friday, November 7th, from 5-8 p.m.! from over 200 application for NYSSMA High School Area All State Band: Caro-lyn Duttweiler on flute, Lily McGovern on alto saxophone, and Nolan Coble on French horn. Please come support them at the concert on Saturday, Nov. 22, at 2 p.m. in Elmira Southside’s beautiful facility.

Junior High Area All State also had tough competition with over 240 applica-tions. Five GVCS students were selected: Karah Landries on clarinet, Megan Hand on clarinet, Hallie Weinman on bass clarinet, Sawyer Barnes on euphonium, and Zach Deichmann on trombone. Please come support their concert Saturday, Nov. 8 at 2 p.m. in Hornell’s auditorium.

On top of all that, Lily McGovern was selected to participate in two honors band weekends. One was at Buffalo State Col-lege on Oct. 19th and the other at Roberts Wesleyan College on the west side of Rochester on Oct. 26th. Both concerts were fantastic. It is a great honor to work with the best students from Western New York. They have great opportunities to enrich their lives by working with great conductors and composers of today.

I look forward to seeing you at the High School Christmas Concert on De-cember 9th and the Middle School Concert on December 16th.

JAM would like to thank everyone for their support on another successful Fish Fry Dinner.

Mrs. Guilford and Mrs. Wesche are working on teaching our stu-dents about the different countries to build up to our Christmas around the world project in Decem-ber. They started with Africa. Mrs. Guilford put together lessons that included clips about Africa, African music and provided books to look at and listen to. She invited one of our parents from the community, Ade Adu, to speak with our children. He lived in Nigeria from the age of 2-18 and then moved to the western part of Africa to attend college before moving to the U.S. to attend college. He went back to visit his parents about 3 years ago for the first time since leaving for higher education. Ade provided the students with a wonder-ful slideshow of his trip and his family. He wore the outfit he would wear if he lived in Africa. Music could be heard flowing from the classroom as he played his instrument while singing a song his mother taught him as well as a song in Swahili. He is in the picture with his instrument. He left some pictures with Mrs. Wesche for people to look at. We are very thankful that we got the chance to have our children experience a little piece of Africa.

We are sorry to inform you that we have to postpone the Drama Production dates for the musical “9 to 5” due to unforeseen circumstanc-es.
